SUMMARY:Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival is an annual showcase of films in Davao City\, Philippines\, that explores the myriad meanings of the word “ngilngig”—a common Bisaya expression for something that is fantastic or something that elicits horror or alluding to the macabre. \nFrom what used to be a horror-genre festival\, Ngilngig has expanded its scope to position itself as a premiere fantastic film festival in Southeast Asia\, extending the reach to other neighboring countries’ “ngilngig” and fantastic films that are significant with our own ways of telling stories. \nAfter a one-year hiatus\, Ngilngig comes back with more adventurous and exciting voices with films from all over Asia. Opening this year’s edition is Kantil\, the debut feature film by Joshua Cesar Medroso\, returning to its hometown after its Cinemalaya premiere. Nelson Yeo’s Locarno-winning debut feature Dreaming & Dying will close the festival. In between are a showcase of 34 Philippine short films and 23 Asian short films in competition. Included in its feature-film lineup are films from acclaimed Filipino auteurs Khavn and Gutierrez Mangansakan II. \nFeisal Azizuddin’s This Land of Mine will also have its World Premiere at the festival ahead of its Malaysian release. Other special screenings include Indonesian artist-filmmaker Riar Rizaldi’s Monisme\, and Ing K’s DogGod\, a film banned in Thailand for 25 years\, and is released in its re-edited version this year. \nThere will be film talks in between as well as an visual art exhibit featuring works from Filipino filmmakers.

SUMMARY:Stray to Stay
DESCRIPTION:Chapel Gallery\, Objectifs\n18 – 26 Oct 2024\nFree Admission \nFeaturing works by Mindy Tan\, Brian Teo\, David Ash\, Cassandra Lim\, and TRB&Co. \nStray to Stay is a dog-friendly group exhibition that seeks to raise awareness about the challenges that stray dogs in Singapore face while celebrating the compassionate efforts of those who dedicate their lives to helping them\, and the families who offer them a permanent place in their lives. Through a combination of compelling visual narratives and a striking sculpture that was commissioned for this exhibition\, the exhibition aims to foster a deeper understanding and empathy towards the plight of these often overlooked animals. This exhibition is not merely a visual experience but a call to action. Whether through adoption\, volunteering\, or simply spreading awareness\, every visitor is encouraged to contribute to this cause. \nSupported by the Benjamin Wong Foundation

SUMMARY:ThirdSpace Sessions: Peter Knight & Tim O'Dwyer
DESCRIPTION:ThirdSpace Sessions was inspired by improvisational guitarist Derek Bailey’s musical collective named ‘Company’. The idea behind ‘Company’ was to bring together an ever-changing collection of free improvising musicians\, in order to create a challenging and artistically stimulating combinations of players who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to work together. \n  \nPeter Knight \nPerpetually curious\, composer/trumpeter Peter Knight’s practice exists in the spaces between categories\, between genres & between cultures. \nFrom 2013-23 Peter was the Artistic Director and co-CEO of the Australian Art Orchestra\, for which he commissioned over 100 compositions and collaborations from a diverse range of international and Australian artists. He also composed for\, and performed in the company\, presenting his works at international festivals and venues in more than a dozen countries winning awards including four AMC Art Music Awards\, the Albert H Maggs Composition Prize\, and numerous ARIA nominations. \nPeter has maintained an active solo career developing an international reputation as a innovator who is extending the possibilities of his instrument with approaches that interweave acoustic preparations\, extended techniques with electroacoustic processing via laptop\, vintage delays\, tape machines\, and pedals. His latest solo release\, Shadow Phase\, is out on the ROOM40 label\, described by Headphone Commute as\, “a carefully curated exercise in reflective restraint\, dreamy atmospherics\, ebbing dynamics.” \nPeter’s current touring projects include ARIA nominated\, Hand to Earth\, featuring Yolngu songkeepers\, Daniel & David Wilfred (MOKUY ROOM40)\, his solo work\, Shadow Phase\, and a new collaboration with Indonesian duo\, Senyawa (The Prey and the Ruler ROOM40). \nPeter also composes for film and recently completed the score for soon to be released Australian feature\, Kid Snow (in collaboration with Warren Ellis). He works in contemporary theatre\, most notably with acclaimed director\, Tamara Saulwick (Chamber Made) with whom he has made five works that blur the boundaries between theatre and music performance that have toured to major international festivals and won three Green Room awards. \nPeter was a Creative Australia Music Fellow 2013-14. He holds a doctorate in music composition from Griffith University and was named its 2013 Alumnus of the Year. \nwww.peterknightmusic.com \nTim O’Dwyer \nTim O’Dwyer is an avante-garde saxophonist\, composer\, and soundpainter. Over more than 30 years\, he has been a musical pioneer in Australia\, Asia and Europe with projects including bucketrider\, The Make It Up Club\, The Tim O’Dwyer Trio\, ELISION Ensemble\, CHOPPA Festival of Experimental Music\, and as a Fellow of the Academy of the Arts of the World in Cologne. In addition\, in the context of his practice\, he has publications in journals\, book chapters\, and conference papers that grapple with the ideas of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guatarri. O’Dwyer has been the Head of the School of Contemporary Music (SoCM) at LASALLE | University of the Arts Singapore since 2010. Over this time\, the SoCM has developed a unique and eclectic approach to music pedagogy that covers a broad spectrum of styles and musicking. The SoCM is a leader in the research and practice of cutting-edge electronic music\, interdisciplinary music-making\, classical improvisation\, international telematic collaboration\, and an intercultural approach to composition with a focus on local identity. The impact of staff and graduates from the SoCM has profoundly affected the music community in Singapore\, South East Asia and beyond. O’Dwyer has been the Chair of SAtheCollective since 2019.

SUMMARY:The Intimate Salon: YS Tang Classical Guitar Recital
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Malaysian Classical Guitarist YS Tang Makes Debut in Singapore \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYS Tang\, a distinguished figure in Malaysia’s classical music landscape\, is poised to captivate Singapore’s music enthusiasts with his debut performance on October 12\, 2024 at MusArt Concert Hall at Raeburn Park. The Singapore leg is part of his highly anticipated 2024 tour that includes performances in Kuala Lumpur\, Muar\, Yong Peng\, Melaka\, Alor Setar\, and Penang. \nFor his Singapore debut\, Tang will deliver a thoughtfully-curated programme that draws from both European and South American traditions\, featuring works from Johann Sebastian Bach\, Spanish composers\, and Brazilian guitar music. Tang views the concert as an homage to the historical ‘salon-style’ performances that date back to the 19th century. \nHe says: “I’ve structured this performance to echo the intimate musical gatherings made famous by composers like Franz Schubert and Francisco Tárrega. It’s about bringing the audience closer to the music in a way that transcends grand venues.” \nA graduate of Texas Tech University with a Master’s degree in Music Performance\, Tang\, who hails from Kuala Lumpur\, has over 25 years of experience. The artist has continuously expanded the reach of classical music through concerts\, public seminars\, and youth outreach initiatives. Tang is also a dedicated collaborator\, performing with chamber ensembles and focusing on early music\, and a vast repertoire that spans from Bach to Barrios. \n\n\n\n\nTang’s Singapore debut is more than a recital; it is a celebration of classical music’s ability to connect people across generations and geographies. Audiences can expect not only technical brilliance but also a deeply immersive experience that highlights Tang’s commitment to the classical guitar as both an art form and a medium for storytelling.

SUMMARY:ANIMALIA: A brush with the Chinese zodiac
DESCRIPTION:Step into Animalia: A brush with the Chinese Zodiac \, where Sue Olivier brings the 12 Chinese zodiac animals to life with a clever wink and a playful brush. Her deep love for Asian culture shines in each piece\, as she boldly captures the quirky\, unique traits of each creature—from the Ox’s unyielding stubbornness to the Horse’s hopeless romantic gallop. Olivier’s witty take respects the rich traditions of the zodiac\, while giving each animal a modern personality that feels strikingly familiar. \nWe’re endlessly fascinated by the zodiac because\, let’s face it—who doesn’t love a little cosmic nudge that says\, “Yes\, you are as charming as a Snake or as loyal as a Dog!” Olivier taps into this playful magic\, making us see ourselves and others in these timeless symbols\, with just enough humor to keep it fun. \nA solo exhibition by Sue Olivier

SUMMARY:Artistic Directors Academy (ADA) Public Lecture: Mycelium Teachings: Cultivating Alliances and Collaborations
DESCRIPTION:There is a growing interest in fungi and mycelium as a material\, the ever-branching connecting threads of the fungal world. The entanglements and how this rhizomatic network functions is not just a fascinating ecological system and material\, but carries a profound usefulness as a metaphor for our potential new systems\, ways of thinking and behaviours. For this lecture\, our ADA Module #3: Nature and Ecologies masterclass specialist Yasmine Ostendorf-Rodríguez\, author of the book ‘Let’s Become Fungal! Mycelium Teachings and the Arts’\, will share what she has learned from working on a shiitake farm and how her deep dive into the world of mycology has influenced the workings and language of the various exchange platforms that she has founded and directed\, including the Future Materials Bank and the Green Art Lab Alliance.

SUMMARY:Indian Performing Arts Convention (IPAC) 2024
DESCRIPTION:A showcase of Indian performing arts in dance\, music and theatre\, to develop interest and appreciation of Indian arts and culture throughout the year. \n \nDWITA\nDWITA\, is a mesmerising bharatanatyam performance by Rama Vaidyanathan and her daughter Dakshina Vaidyanathan that explores the harmonious coexistence of dualities. A mother-daughter duo reminds us of a duality that exists in every aspect of our lives. They complement and empower each other\, with one symbolising the present and the other the future. \nThere are always two sides to a coin\, two perceptions and two paths to a goal. The challenge\, however\, is to recognise both and for both to coexist. DWITA\, a Sanskrit term for duality\, delves into the balance between material wealth and spiritual knowledge\, invoking the blessings of goddesses Saraswati and Lakshmi. \nSAMVET\nIn SAMVET\, a captivating kathak showcase\, nature’s five elements unite to form a harmonious whole. This balanced convergence awakens our senses\, bringing a profound sense of perfect equilibrium. As these elements merge seamlessly\, they evoke an everlasting bliss that resonates through our heart\, mind\, body and soul. \nFLOWERS OF DEVOTION\nImmerse yourself in the divine beauty of Flowers of Devotion\, a captivating Manipuri dance performance that celebrates the sacred art form’s rich heritage. Rooted in the temple traditions of Manipur\, the performance intertwines the ancient devotional dances of Lai-Haraoba and Raas Lila. This classical dance form is imbued with the devotional themes of Madhura Raas\, portraying the love of Kirshna with goddess Radha and the cowherd damsels of Vrindavan. The dance is characterised by soft body movements along with peaceful facial expressions known as Bhakti Rasa\, the emotion of devotion. \nTICKETS & PRICES\nStandard – $35\nConcession – $28

SUMMARY:Raga 2024: MAAS
DESCRIPTION:Jyoti Dogra’s MAAS is a witty and humorous exploration of aging\, beauty standards and body image in an era where society is obsessed with the often-unrealistic standards set by health gurus and social media influencers. In a world where natural bodily changes are commonly frowned upon\, this piece challenges those ideas by examining and critiquing the body of the performer. \nThe piece then deftly evolves into a deeper investigation of shame and its subtle\, pervasive impact on how we view ourselves and interact with the world. MAAS ultimately is a poignant and provocative examination of how we see ourselves and others in a world fixated on perfection. \nTickets & Prices: \nStandard – $35\nConcession – $28 (Students\, NSFs\, Seniors & PWDs) \nPurchase tickets from the official site. \nAdditional Notes\n\nAssistive Listening Available\nAdvisory 16: Mature Theme and Coarse Language\nAdmission Age: 16 and above.\nLanguage: English\, with some Hindi\nSurtitle Language: English\nThere will be a post-show dialogue after each performance.
