SUMMARY:Open Call for Shorts - RawGround 25/26
DESCRIPTION:In our 6th edition\, RAW Moves is pleased to open our annual call for local and international artists to submit proposals for the next edition of RawGround (RG) 2025/26\, which will be running in February 2026*. \nPresented by RAW Moves in Singapore\, RawGround is designed to present a curated mini film showcase that fosters dialogue and broadens our perception of social norms. The short films\, created by artists and practitioners from various disciplines\, each reframe the aesthetics of the everyday through the lens of the individual. We welcome unorthodox\, conceptual works of narratives that redefine movement. \nApplicants are invited to conceptualise and create two new original short films~\, responding to this edition’s theme of “(Un)finished Work: In pursuit of the work of pretending”. \n\nThe Theme \nThe first of RAW Moves’ three-year exploration of “(Un)finished Work: In pursuit of ______” themes\, we delve into the paradigm of “pretending”: \n\n\n\n\nIn the work of “pretending”\, we explore the labour of balancing appearances and reality. As we externalise the self to connect with others\, we find these efforts can come at costs to ourselves. Going inward\, what are the personas we believe we need to uphold? Going forward\, what do we now shed – or shield – of ourselves? \n\n\n\n\nThe Process \nSelected artist-collaborators will be offered artist fees from RAW Moves for the conceptualisation and creation of the two films\, each ranging between 5 to 10 minute duration. In the staggered ten weeks creative process (From April 2025)\, each artist will be collaborating and supported by our Artistic Director and Resident Dramaturg to deliver two films. In addition to financial support\, appointed artist-collaborators will be able to develop their portfolio\, articulate ideas and enrich their creative processes through engaging diverse perspectives. This cultural exchange opportunity also offers visibility and chances to connect and interact with arts professionals and audiences from around the world. \n\n\n\n\nThe Presentation (3-days) \n\nFilm Screening Premiere\, Singapore\nThe final vignette of films will be launched at a physical screening session in Singapore^ in February 2026*\, which will include post-show dialogues at the end of the screening.\nArtists-led Workshops\, Singapore\nEach artist is required to host a 15 to 20 pax in-person workshop (1 – 1.5hour) that will engage the local arts community as an extension of their films’ narrative and concept. The extended events also offer networking opportunities with fellow artist-collaborators and local audiences. SUMMARY:Amazônia
DESCRIPTION:Amazônia is a major exhibition by the award-winning photographer Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944\, Brazil). It spotlights the Amazon region and its ecosystems coming under the threat of deforestation and climate change\, while featuring the voices\, portraits\, and perspectives of the Indigenous communities who live in – and with – the largest rainforest on the planet. \nThis multisensory and immersive exhibition\, curated and designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado\, comprises over 200 photographs\, a soundtrack by Jean-Michel Jarre\, two projection rooms\, video testimonies from Indigenous leaders\, tactile image plates for the visually impaired\, and a space dedicated to Instituto Terra\, the reforestation non-governmental organisation founded by the Salgados. Amazônia powerfully demonstrates the beauty and majesty of the Amazon region\, while issuing an important call to protect and conserve what has been called “the lungs of the world”. \nThe exhibition features photographic artworks with male and female nudity and contains imagery of dead animals. Visitor discretion is advised.

From the earliest work created in the late 1970s\, to his subsequent revisiting of his “Abstract Landscape” series\, the exhibited works are threaded through “Well M Farmland – Square Puzzle”\, a landmark work created in Singapore during the Covid-19 years that depicts a fascinating narrative of Li’s personal reflection towards the pandemic. Join us for this photo walk where you will learn more about the techniques of taking photographs using your camera’s in-built flash. SUMMARY:The Gaze of TIme: Photographs by Hor Kwok Kin
DESCRIPTION:artcommune gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of Singapore photographer\, Hor Kwok Kin (b. 1939\, Ipoh). On view from 3 to 18 December\, The Gaze of Time features a selection of 25 colour and 15 black-and-white photographic works dating from the early 1960s to the 2000s. The exhibition officially opens on 7 December\, Saturday\, 3-4.30pm with the artist in attendance. All Are welcome! \n​ \nHor Kwok Kin’s style can be classified alongside the works of other modernist photographers\, such as his friend and mentor\, Yip Cheong Fun. The thoughtful use of geometric elements in his compositions particularly recalls the latter’s influence. More significantly\, his black-and-white photographs were captured and developed personally using darkroom techniques in the period of 1960s-80s. Heavily influenced by humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson’s pioneering street photography\, he captured scenes of everyday Singapore with a strikingly modernist composition. \n​ \nAs the period of Hor Kwok Kin’s photographic practice coincided with the transition of a post-independent Singapore\, he managed to archive in the process a variety of environments\, professions and social activities that once characterised life in Old Singapore. His identity as a working-class photographer also allowed him to effectively immortalise moments that proved intensely empathetic to his subjects\, like the quayside labourers or the worker at a quarry\, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries. \n​ \nHor Kwok Kin began to explore colour photography in the 1990s\, retaining his focus on portraying the lived lives and everyday interactions of local communities. In this later period\, he also delved into a close-up examination on the social-emotional life of animals\, such as the portrait of a growing Inuka – the first polar bear born and housed at the Singapore Zoo in the 90s.

The exhibition titled Mansau-Ansau (referring in the Dusun and Kadazan language to a wandering without expectation and thus embracing curiosity) attends to Yee’s journey of discovery and creation over two decades\, navigating domains of knowledge\, old and new\, and reimagining the forms and dynamics of power. \nThe exhibition spans a range of media\, including photo collage\, silk\, batik\, bamboo pus\, and pandanus. Yee closely collaborates with sea- and land-based communities and indigenous mediums in Sabah\, Malaysia\, weaving thoughtfully presented narratives and cultural bridges through art. Visitors are invited to encounter a horizon that teases\, where the kerbau (buffalos) stand their ground and mats ‘eat’ tables\, experience karaoke beyond language\, and meet turtles as they return home. DESCRIPTION:This December\, the award-winning Japanese film Plan 75 is back on the big screen for a limited run since its release in 2022. Hailed for its sensitivity and haunting premise\, the film provides a lens to examine the place of seniors in a rapidly ageing society. Plan 75 will be accompanied by the touching short film Float Free (2024)\, where a trio of senior women find joy and a new lease of life from learning to swim at Yishun Swimming Complex. Both films offer an incisive and moving portrait of ageing\, community\, and the value of human connection. This unique pairing is brought together by non-profit arts organisation ArtsWok Collaborative in partnership with indie cinema The Projector.  \n  \nPlan 75 \nDirected by Chie Hayakawa \nIn Japanese with English subtitles \nRated NC16 \n  \nSet in a parallel dystopian Japan\, Plan 75 explores the introduction of a radical nationwide programme for voluntary euthanasia to deal with a super-aged society and the larger psychological repercussions that come with it. The film is a contemplative response to loneliness\, human dignity\, and what it really means to live. \n  \nFloat Free  \nCo-created by Chia Yim Fong\, Koh Tong Cheng\, and Michelle Sim with Salty Xi Jie Ng \nIn Mandarin with English and Mandarin subtitles \nRated G \n  \nFloat Free follows three seniors who overcome their fear of water to learn swimming at an older age. In the process\, they discover a shared community\, the freedom water provides in old age\, and reflections on life and death. The short film was collaboratively scripted by senior collaborators and the lead artist of a recent project under ArtsWok Collaborative’s flagship programme Both Sides\, Now.  \n  \nMembers of the public will have a chance to catch Plan 75 and Float Free in the cinema on 7 and 15 December only at The Projector at Cineleisure. Tickets will be available from 15 November 2024. The Projector will be donating a portion of ticket sales from both screenings to ArtsWok Collaborative in support of the work they do in engaging and developing communities. SUMMARY:Lecture & Screening: Unearthing the "Blue Frontier": The International Seabed Authority's New Mining Code and the Costs of Deep-Sea Mining
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, deep-sea minerals like polymetallic nodules containing copper and cobalt have gained attention as a potential resource for green energy technologies such as batteries\, computers\, and electric cars. Found mainly on the international seabed (as well as within territorial waters)\, these nodules are regulated by the International Seabed Authority (ISA)\, which will finalize a mining code in 2025 that determines future deep-sea exploration and exploitation. Following Singapore’s Deep-Sea Mining Act of 2015\, Ocean Mineral Singapore\, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore and Marine conducted two deep-sea expeditions to the Pacific Ocean. While some argue this extraction is crucial for the green transition\, Pacific nations warn of its harmful impact on marine biodiversity and climate change. This lecture will explore the environmental and societal implications of deep-sea mining\, starting with a screening of the film Blue Peril\, 2022 (INTERPRT / Professor Nabil Ahmed\, Deep Sea Mining Campaign & Ozeanien-Dialog)\, a science-based visual investigation using architectural and spatial analysis to model the potentially irreversible effects of deep-sea mining in the Pacific Ocean. Paired with testimonies from Pacific Island communities\, this film addresses the impacts on their economies and ways of life. DESCRIPTION:“Riding bikes ain’t s#!+ without climate justice\, without land back\, without liberation of everybody.” Christina Torres\, Cyclista Zine \nThe bicycle is more than just a means of transportation. In our increasingly car-centric and carbon-heavy lifestyle\, cycling is a climate action that slows down the rate at which our planet is burning. Inspiring stories from Gaza have shown us how bicycles can be radically repurposed into washing machines\, sewing machines\, and even power generators. \nIn the first part of the workshop\, participants will be offered a set of unused bicycle components and they will be guided to devise and conceptualise new musical or sonic instruments with them. In the second part\, these unorthodox instruments will be played in a group jam session! \nParticipants are encouraged to bring personal items such as mallets\, drumsticks\, clarinet mouthpieces\, and/or any musical bobs and bits they can incorporate into the instruments. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. DESCRIPTION:Step into the shade of the Albizia tree (Albizia moluccana)\, a resilient migrant tree species that has quietly spread and flourished in rewilding green spaces across Singapore’s landscape\, forming isolated islands amid Singapore’s urban concrete jungle. 5 Albizias\, a travelling showcase by artist Robert Zhao Renhui\, explores the history of the Albizia tree in Singapore\, tracing its origins to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia\, where the fast-growing species often populates areas marked by human intervention and natural disturbances.  \nThrough striking visuals of five Albizias—four from across Singapore in Tampines\, Punggol\, Jurong\, and Woodlands\, corresponding to the showcase venues—and one from the Maluku Islands\, 5 Albizias invites visitors to examine the impact human actions have on these spaces and the dynamic interplay between native and non-native\, natural and artificial. By spotlighting the resilience of these often-overlooked trees\, the exhibition brings to the fore their essential role in rewilding disturbed land\, creating pockets of green where life can thrive anew. \nPresented by Singapore Art Museum\, 5 Albizias takes Zhao’s explorations of the Albizia tree into the heartlands.
