SUMMARY:Vampyr
DESCRIPTION:Vampyr is a mockumentary about stubborn shapeshifting creatures—half-dead\, half- alive\, half-animal\, half-human\, half-earth—that refuse to obey the mandate of the nature/culture divide. Living in unregulated wind turbine parks in Chile\, these indeterminate beings exist sometimes as disoriented bats\, and sometimes as exhausted night-shift workers. \nA piece about energy and exhaustion\, work and rest\, Vampyr is a work of delirious black humour about the relationship between the non-humans (read: animals) that inhabit our territories and how we relate to their cultures when we consider humankind’s energetic projections for the future. \nA critical and ironic dialogue is established between the myth of the European vampire and the reality of the Chilean hematophagous bat\, a species that dies in large numbers due to wind turbines. This creation of an imagined mythology of a South American vampire presents a critical perspective on green neo-colonialism\, which perpetuates practices of extraction and appropriation of colonial logic that are greenwashed under the guise of green energy production. \nVampyr is the third part of Chilean playwright and theatre director Manuela Infante’s exploration of the non-human that started with Estado Vegetal and How to Turn to Stone.

Traversing an interplay between imagined and experienced realities\, the images serve as a portal to a temporal landscape that has been irrevocably altered by external forces. Rooted in the artist’s personal displacement from 1998 Indonesia\, a period marked by significant societal unrest and racial tension\, the work transforms personal narrative into a resonant exploration of universal themes: displacement\, remembrance\, and the enduring quest to reclaim our own story. \nAbout the artist\nJuliana Tan is a photographer whose work is rooted in the ephemeral. Her instinct is underscored by her rapt yet gentle observation of the world around her. Juliana’s sensitivity to shifting lights\, hues and timing deftly informs her images as an intimate\, yet infinite\, dialogue—a single moment in time captured within the process of becoming. \nHer first monograph\, A Kind of Magic\, was published by Jordan\, jordan Édition in 2025. Her work Clear Mandate\, in collaboration with Khoo Guo Jie\, was shown at Angkor Photo Festival 2020. \nAbout the curator\nNg Hui Hsien works as an artist\, educator\, and curator. Through her artworks\, she seeks to evoke stillness and wonder\, especially towards our inner landscapes and the more-than-human world. Her artworks have been internationally exhibited in institutions and festivals\, including the MOU Museum of Onomichi City University (Japan)\, GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts (Germany)\, Reykjavík Museum of Photography (Iceland)\, and Comma Space (Singapore). \nAs an independent curator\, Hui Hsien has worked with Angkor Photo Festival (Cambodia) and The Private Museum (Singapore) to present a projection screening and an exhibition respectively in 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Diverse dancers from Southeast Asia and Japan create the imagined world of a colony through dance and movement. Each expressing their personal challenges and aspirations beyond their limitations and comfort zones. \nThey live in enforced proximity in an urban tenement\, yet exist as disparate entities distanced by prejudice\, ignorance and fear. \nThey struggle to make connections despite their differences\, while negotiating long-held preconceptions of what it means to be perfect\, complete\, normal\, valuable\, human. \nIn the natural world\, the survival of any colony of organisms depends on its ability to function as a single cohesive collective. Differences\, diversity\, perceived strengths and weaknesses are embraced as necessities – sine qua non – “without which\, not.”\nAnd so too it is with our colony. \nCOLONY – A True Colors Project is the result of an intense collaborative experiment. A blank canvas on which the artistic director\, choreographer\, composer\, film director\, dancers and designers organically paint a narrative in dance\, music and film.\nUnscripted films are seamlessly woven in. They give the audience a peek behind the curtain\, revealing the most sacred element of any artist’s creative journey ­– the rehearsal space.

SUMMARY:Han Mengyun: Jewels of Impermanence
DESCRIPTION:Singapore\, May 2025 — ShanghART Singapore is pleased to present Jewels of Impermanence\, London-based artist Han Mengyun’s first solo exhibition in the gallery’s Singapore space. The title is borrowed from a poem the artist penned amid the unsettling spring of 2020. The show gathers a selection of paintings and drawings made between 2020 and 2025\, providing a scintillating\, at times enigmatic\, glimpse into the artist’s pandemic-era turmoil and the spiritual composure she forged through an aesthetic meditation on impermanence. \nHan’s images stage an encounter between Dutch vanitas paintings and Buddhist depictions of skeletons and skulls. Whereas vanitas and memento mori traditions expose worldly vanity\, Buddhist “meditations on repulsiveness” confront impermanence as a precondition of enlightenment. Interweaving iconographies through a repertoire of skulls\, hourglasses\, and other emblems of transience\, Han constructs mandala-like configurations\, printed with woodblocks she has collected across Asia. The mandala serves as a phenomenological prism—an architectonic map through which both the macrocosm and the psyche can be apprehended. Such material and visual hybridity stages a tension between sensuous surface and metaphysical aspiration. Works such as Spaß und Tod\, with its skeletal hands poised in play\, recall the late-medieval danse macabre and Tibetan thangka of the citipati\, acknowledging death as a kinetic partner in the continuum of life and the catalyst of existential transformation. \nThe series marks the artist’s return to oil painting which she rejected for almost a decade in search of the alternative to ‘the Western’. “In the prospect of grim uncertainty”\, the artist says\, “I felt an urgent craving for the corporeal lusciousness of oil\, the exhilarating violence of the brush\, the humble endurance of canvas—capacities ink and rice paper cannot sustain. In this existential aporia\, I understood for the first time the Heideggerean Sein-zum-Tode\, being-toward-death—the unflinching awareness of finitude makes life infinitely possible.” \nJewels of Impermanence \nIn the silent altar of the mind\, the soul awakens to whisper words of truth. That’s the gift from disasters\, a garland of quietude. There is neither past nor future. The present is forever present. That is also my present. May the song of birds break the dawn. May fear manifest itself as mere illusion. The siege of clouds fails to capture the night-dwelling moon\, whose mission is to reveal the veracity of light and compassion. My mind becomes clear and still\, like a pond holding moonlight\, like a mirror polished in the river. And can the personal or singular narrative be just as powerful when used to explore wider issues and concerns that affect us all? Where does the imagination insert itself in our attempts to make sense of our identities\, histories\, and personal experiences\, especially amidst wider forces that shape them beyond our control? \nJoin us at our upcoming Film Club event\, taking place in conjunction with Juliana Tan’s exhibition\, a kind of magic\, where we will be exploring these topics and more. The session will kickstart with a screening of Polen Ly’s ‘Further and Further Away‘\, followed by a conversation between Juliana\, academic and researcher Amillin Hussain\, as well as audience members about the similarities in issues that both film and exhibition bring to light. \n\nAbout ‘Further and Further Away‘ by Polen Ly \nA young indigenous Bunong woman and her older brother spend one last day in their rural village in northeastern Cambodia\, before an impending move to the capital city in search of a more prosperous life. While her brother is excited for the move\, she senses a quiet desire to return to their long-gone village that was lost to the development of a nearby hydroelectric dam a few years earlier. \nAbout the speakers \nJuliana Tan is a photographer whose work is rooted in the ephemeral. Her instinct is underscored by her rapt yet gentle observation of the world around her. Juliana’s sensitivity to shifting lights\, hues and timing deftly informs her images as an intimate\, yet infinite\, dialogue—a single moment in time captured within the process of becoming. Her first monograph\, A Kind of Magic\, was published by Jordan\, jordan Édition in 2025. Her work Clear Mandate\, in collaboration with Khoo Guo Jie\, was shown at Angkor Photo Festival 2020. \nNurul Amillin Hussain is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Sociology at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Amillin’s research looks at sustainable and smart infrastructures in high-rise housing estates\, focusing on Singapore. She received her BA in Sociology from NTU\, an MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge\, and a PhD in Geography from the University of Oxford. In her free time\, she takes walks\, enjoys creative writing\, and volunteers with The Codette Project. \nAbout the Objectifs Film Library\nThe Objectifs Film Library is an initiative by Objectifs that aims to be a resource for film lovers in Singapore and the region.
