SUMMARY:Playing it Safe in 2023\, Praying for Wealth in 2024
DESCRIPTION:ShanghART Singapore is delighted to present Lin Aojie’s solo exhibition “Playing it Safe in 2023\, Praying for Wealth in 2024”\, opening 7 September 2024 at 4pm. The exhibition brings together recent works by the artist\, showcasing witty insights gathered from his observations of the art industry\, the society\, and the world at large. \nMarking his debut exhibition in Southeast Asia\, the self-proclaimed Southeast Asian artist (Lin is based in Guangzhou) was inspired to adapt the iconic political cartoon “The Situation in the Far East” (时局图) with a contemporary twist to create his new iPad painting “Southeast Asia Art Scene”. His distinctive style is perfectly demonstrated through the cartoon-like aesthetics\, historical references\, layered symbolisms\, as well as reflections and observations of the art world and its relations to the wider society. These elements continue to manifest themselves across the other works in the exhibition in various forms. \nAs the exhibition title suggests\, the works presented reflect the human condition as perceived by the artist\, most notably through the pair of video works created in last and this year. A series of conversations across the two videos reveal the inner desires and the fundamentals of human nature\, with “Ultimate Super Dodgy Talk” (2024) hidden within the gallery and only accessible to the ones who are brave enough to take the extra step. \nThe Chinese title “人间” roughly translates to ‘the world of mortals’\, highlighting the observations of the human society from a broader perspective. However instead of positioning himself as a superior viewpoint\, Lin humorously inserts himself across his works. These paintings reference various settings such as the life of an artist and the art gallery system\, to the geopolitical situation\, as well as the unspoken rules and power dynamics in a society. \nConspicuously\, the only works that he is absent from are the triptych depicting the Three Deities. The figures are instead surrounded by a diverse variety of motifs ranging from traditional beliefs to urban myths\, forming a comprehensive image of humanity’s biggest wants through the ages. Once again showcasing Lin’s signature style\, the works blend traditional references with a contemporary approach by presenting these mouse paintings akin to how traditional Chinese posters are stuck onto the walls of their homes for blessing and protection\, except that they are in a commercial gallery space this time. \nThreading both personal narratives and universal motifs\, Lin ingeniously creates seemingly simple yet extremely layered paintings that present a multitude of ways of reading. His approach of discussing serious topics in a light-hearted manner positions himself as a unique voice in this increasingly complex and fragmented world.

It intends to combine: \n\nthe magic of hearing an artist or bookmaker share about their process\, and\nthe luxury of time and comfort when reading in a library.\n\nAn art book is a curious object—it’s an artwork you can touch and carry around. It can have pictures and texts\, or many pictures and no text\, or even texts and no pictures. \nArt books afford a private space and mode of encounter that can be revisited freely and repeatedly. While I love the conversations surrounding books and their makers at an art fair\, it’s an awfully extroverted endeavour. [collected on paper] offers a chance to explore different art books and the creators’ thoughts in an intimate setting\, with notes on their processes and materials.” \nMODE \nA selection of books will be presented alongside a book club under a particular idea on each occasion. The showcase is held within an existing art book library\, allowing the books to be encountered in the context of other art books. \nThe first occasion will reflect on the idea of time capsules. These items aren’t necessarily exclusive or rare but serve as a snapshot of what the capsule’s creator valued at that moment. She recontextualises familiar sights and sounds to highlight patterns\, repetitions\, and contradictions related to inheritance and ways of learning. \nHer recent projects delve into informal archives\, which act like personal and communal time capsules that encapsulate the banalities and peculiarities of life. These include handwritten elements found in scores and annotations\, alongside amateur videos and images. This fascination is informed by her experiences growing up in amateur Chinese orchestras and the internet. \nShu holds a BFA (Hons) in Media Art (Photography) from Nanyang Technological University\, School of Art\, Design\, and Media. She was awarded the Kwek Leng Joo Prize of Excellence in Photography and featured in the 6th Women in Film and Photography Showcase by Objectifs (Singapore). Recently\, she had her first solo presentation at Esplanade (Singapore) as part of the Singapore Art Week 2024. She has participated in exhibitions\, showcases\, and festivals internationally\, including in Austria\, Cambodia\, China\, Germany\, Indonesia\, Italy\, Malaysia\, the Netherlands\, South Korea\, Taiwan\, and Thailand.

The exhibition features 11 limited edition designs crafted from stainless steel and in the typology of everyday interior objects: sofa\, lounger\, chair\, bar stool\, standing screen\, and vase. Sculptural\, sleek and thought-provoking in shapes and polished to a mirror finish\, these works overturn conventional expectations of industrial design and push the symbiotic interdependence between form and functionality of such objects beyond their familiar material and presence. \nThe marriage of art and industrial design is an artistic process well explored in the creative world. Ushered in by the likes of Western artists such as Donald Judd\, John Chamberlain and Dan Flavin\, who opened up a new entire visual vocabulary since the 1960s\, this practice has continued to inform contemporary currents of art and industrial expressions in myriad ways. In Singapore\, however\, this remains a niche exploration and an undercelebrated creative practice. With his exceptional background in design and craftsmanship\, Nathan’s interest in challenging and bridging the formal expressions of art and object design has been at the forefront of his exploration with industrial materials over the decades. Being and Nothingness – A Discourse on Identity showcases Nathan’s latest series of work\, through which he examines the relationships surrounding material design\, space and identity. \nIn the realm of Singaporean artistry\, the choice of stainless steel pipes and sheets as a medium carries profound symbolism\, reflecting the cultural and societal ethos of the nation. This medium\, inherently sleek and efficient\, evokes a paradoxical narrative\, oscillating between cleanliness and coldness\, efficiency and a lack of warmth. Just as polished stainless steel mirrors its surroundings\, there is a reflection of Singapore’s societal fabric where efficiency often prevails\, but at times\, individual identity can feel overshadowed. Singapore\, a city-state known for its modernity and progress\, is often portrayed through the lens of efficiency and cleanliness. The use of stainless steel as an artistic medium echoes these themes\, embodying the precision and orderliness that define the cityscape. The smooth\, unblemished surfaces of stainless steel pipes and sheets represent the meticulous planning and execution characteristic of Singapore’s urban development. \nHowever\, beneath this surface of efficiency sits a deeper narrative. The coldness of stainless steel speaks to the potential loss of individual identity in a society that prioritises uniformity and conformity. Just as the reflective nature of polished stainless steel can obscure its own identity in favour of mirroring its surroundings\, individuals may find themselves caught in a similar predicament\, striving for perfection and assimilation while grappling with the erosion of personal distinctiveness. \nYet\, there is a poignant beauty in this reflection. The mirrored surfaces of stainless steel invite contemplation\, prompting viewers to question their own roles within the societal framework. The interplay between the material’s reflective qualities and its inherent lack of warmth challenges us to seek balance between efficiency and human connection\, between order and individuality. \nUltimately\, the symbolism of stainless steel in Singaporean artistry serves as a microcosm of the city-state itself— a place where efficiency and progress coexist with the complexities of human experience. It reminds us that beneath the gleaming facade of modernity\, there are nuanced narratives waiting to be discovered and expressed\, inviting us to reflect on our own identities within the ever-evolving tapestry of Singaporean society.

SUMMARY:Rattan Eco Sprawl: Manifesting the Forest by Zen Teh
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum (SAM) presents Rattan Eco Sprawl: Manifesting the Forest\, a newly commissioned artwork by Singaporean artist Zen Teh. This installation is part of Port/raits of Tanjong Pagar\, a public art trail by The Everyday Museum that brings artistic perspectives into everyday spaces in the Tanjong Pagar neighbourhood. It joins other works on the trail by five other artists Aki Hassan\, Divaagar\, Space Objekt\, Grace Tan and Isabella Teng. \nNestled in a tranquil\, lush corner of Spottiswoode Park\, Rattan Eco Sprawl is crafted primarily from rattan\, with forms inspired by natural elements such as mountains and mounds where insects dwell — the same formations that have also influenced sacred structures like Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Live plants encroach on the structure’s exterior\, while the interior of the work\, with its lowered ceilings and narrowed passageways resembles a space where the natural world can be contemplated and nurtured.  \nSet against the backdrop of Singapore’s rapidly changing urban landscape\, Rattan Eco Sprawl reflects on the entanglement of nature and urban development. Through collaborating with rattan and wood artisans\, an ecologist\, and study of the local environments\, Rattan Eco Sprawl highlights our fragile\, intertwined relationship with nature. \nIn conjunction with the launch of the work on 6 October 2024\, a special artist talk will take place on the same day at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. The programme features a short film screening on the making of the work and a talk by artist Zen Teh who will discuss her interdisciplinary approach. Also present are the key collaborators of the work — the rattan artisans from Cambodia. Participants will have a chance to learn from the artisans\, weaving techniques used to create the installation. Are you curious about all the exciting new features of your smartphone and how it can be used to make visually compelling stories? Smartphone Filmmaking is the perfect introduction to filmmaking for first-time filmmakers! Participants will learn pre-production skills (i.e. how to storyboard\, come up with a script\, cinematography techniques\, lighting and sound knowledge)\, engage in film production (i.e. how to cast\, direct\, and do production management)\, and post-production (i.e. film editing). \nThe workshop includes on-location\, hands-on camera work and consultation as participants work together in teams to complete individual short films. No fancy gear needed! \nIt is highly recommended that participants use their own mobile phones in this class. \nWorkshop Fee\n$875.00 \nThis workshop is eligible for use of SkillsFuture Credit. \nPlease note:\nThis is a very hands-on workshop. DESCRIPTION:Homing InstinctAnanta Thitanat\, Ari Angkasa\, Dieneke Jansen\, Kahurangiariki Smith with Buntheun Oung8 October – 2 December 2024 \nHoming Instinct is a collaborative moving image project featuring artist commissions related to housing\, home and belonging. It is a partnership between The Physics Room (Ōtautahi)\, CIRCUIT (Te Whanganui-a-Tara)\, Composite (Naarm)\, and STORAGE (Bangkok); the project will be shown at each of the sites of its three new commissions. As such\, the work also shifts through states of belonging and meeting for the first time\, hosting and being hosted\, being located and being in transit. The first iteration of Homing Instinct was launched at The Physics Room and Enjoy Contemporary Art Space in Aotearoa\, New Zealand\, in July. Now\, it’s time for Bangkok to embrace this transformative journey.Homing Instinct began with a conversation around housing inequalities in Aotearoa. It evolved into an exhibition project with three new moving image commissions by Ananta Thitanat\, Ari Angkasa\, and Kahurangiariki Smith with Buntheun Oung. These are accompanied by an existing work by Dieneke Jansen\, which sparked this series of new commissions. Collectively\, Homing Instinct intends to hold a metaphorical prism in front of ideas we may have about housing\, home and belonging\, generating more expansive conversations about identity and its connections to place.Selected from an open call by each commissioning organisation\, these works take a distinct perspective\, yet the currents of identity and diaspora and reflections on family histories form points of convergence. These works have been developed with an awareness that they will move across different cultural contexts\, yet arguably they each deploy strategic acts of resistance to easy consumption. The works rely on translation\, nonlinear narrative logic or multiple temporalities\, and as such they disrupt any expectation of seamless transition between contexts.

SUMMARY:Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:11 October 2024 to 31 August 2025 \nDaily\, 10am–7pm | Fridays\, 10am–9pm \nPeranakan Museum \n$6 for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents; $18 for Foreigners \nFamily\, art\, and entrepreneurship converge in the story of three visionary Peranakan women from Indonesia – Nyonya Oeij Soen King\, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing\, and her granddaughter Jane Hendromartono. From the 1890s to 1980s\, they produced impressive batiks in the renowned batik centre of Pekalongan on Java’s north coast. \nFeaturing about 200 batik textiles and accompanying objects\, Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship examines the lives and careers of these Peranakan women through their works. With batik as a portrait of society\, the exhibition reveals the influence of the Oeij family women as they became batik masters in their own right\, as they ingeniously responded to the rapid political\, cultural and economic changes of their time to run a business that produced great art. Visitors are invited to draw links to the development and evolution of Indonesian batik through a Peranakan perspective\, and to participate in hands-on workshops\, performances and tours. The exhibition will also feature a contemporary art commission by Aiko Tezuka\, an artist specialised in producing art based on the unravelling of woven fabric.

In continuation of the first exhibition at Silpakorn University in 2022 commemorating the artist’s return to his alma mater\, this historic exhibition now journeys to Singapore\, bringing with it a new myriad of selections from local and regional private collections. \nInitiated in 2019\, the Déjà vu series proposes an alternative interpretation of history by reframing Western classical knowledge alongside Eastern and Buddhist concepts. This exhibition presents a hypothesis of a reimagined space and time\, encouraging the audience to consider scenarios of “what if”—how different historical events might have altered our socio-cultural present. The Déjà vdu series draws inspiration from the artist’s experience in Naples\, where a chance encounter with a marble sculpture at the Museo Archeologico sparked a profound connection. This moment of Déjà vu merged memories of Thailand’s Walking Buddha with the classical Western figure\, leading the artist to probe further into the intersections between Eastern and Western cultures. \nNatee Utarit’s exploration through the series is deeply personal\, yet it resonates with universal themes of memory\, identity\, and culture. Through a diverse array of mediums—including painting\, sculpture\, embroidery\, stained glass\, and woodcut—the works serve as a reminder that history is not linear\, but cyclical; that the past\, present\, and future are constantly intertwined in ways that shape our perceptions of the world. By challenging the boundaries of historical plausibility\, the exhibition offers viewers a space to consider the possibilities that emerge when traditional narratives are turned on their heads\, symbolically represented by the paradoxical notion of the sun rising in the west. \nDéjà vu: When the Sun Rises in the West is the final instalment of The Private Museum’s 2024 programming—offering a fitting closure to a year of diverse artistic and cultural exploration. Focusing on the historic urban environs of Penang\, the series is a culmination of three separate trips to Penang between 2022 – 2023\, during which the artist endured unpredictable weather conditions and worked energetically to paint the landscapes on-site.  \nTan believes that an artist has to feel emotionally connected with a landscape in order to paint it. Penang\, like Singapore\, was once part of the Straits Settlements under the British Colonial rule and its landscape and culture today continues to reflect a melting pot of multi-ethnic influences. Mediated by his memories of Singapore in its yesteryears\, Penang\, saved from the behemothic sword of urban redevelopment\, has become reminiscent of the Old Singapore and offers him a continued source of artistic inspiration. This new series of Penang landscapes are marvellously expressed through the artist’s mature brush and palette knife techniques.  \nSince the 1980s\, Tan has developed a highly personal and recognisable style of landscape painting which eschews photographic details\, favouring instead\, an emotional and expressive handling of brushwork and colour. His thoughtful renditions of various landscape scenes around Southeast Asia\, such as an alley next to a weathered shophouse\, a rustic village\, a bustling open-air market\, local provision stores\, and streetside hawkers are bold in colours yet suffused with a mesmerising nostalgia.

DESCRIPTION:ViaRT is excited to introduce a new challenge for its 5th year art competition under the title “1.5 Degrees Celsius: Create against Climate Change.” ViaRT invites primary and secondary students across Singapore to join our annual art competition in response to global warming and the urgent need to act\, as well as in support of the Recycle Right campaign by the National Environment Agency (NEA) to encourage the 3Rs (Reduce\, Reuse\, Recycle) culture. \nThis year’s competition aims to ignite a creative response to the global warming crisis\, emphasizing the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius limit set by the Paris Agreement. Students are encouraged to use upcycled materials to produce artworks or design items that not only showcase artistic skill but also function as potent messages for climate action. \nParticipants can create innovative solutions such as energy-saving devices\, sustainable fashion\, or artworks that vividly depict the impacts of exceeding the 1.5°C threshold or any other climate change related topic. The goal is to raise awareness and inspire action among peers and communities towards maintaining this critical limit for global temperature rise. \nThe submission period will begin on September 9th and conclude on November 15th\, 2024. By incorporating physical manifestations into artworks\, Lost & Found: Embodied Archive is the second pillar of Singapore Art Museum’s (SAM) multi-phase\, multi-year curatorial study project\, which allows curators and artists to experiment with new formats. Can traditional methods of documentation fully capture and preserve an artwork? How can performances or bodily experiences be “collected” or remembered? Expanding on this notion\, the exhibition invites visitors to consider the body as a reservoir of memory\, where artworks choreograph our encounters with them\, activating us bodily as visitors.  \n  \nFrom 25 October to 24 November 2024\, visitors are invited to step between intersections of the body and memory to explore rituals of space\, mind and humanity in a month-long exhibition at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. SUMMARY:WHO IS WEAVING THE SKY NET?
DESCRIPTION:“Who is Weaving the Sky Net?” brings together eight artists who explore textile\, fabric\, and weaving as metaphors to question the construction of our universe and existence. The title\, borrowed from an essay on science and philosophy by physician Nguyen Tuong Bach\, draws on the delicate interplay between quantum physics and Buddhist thought. In his reflection\, Nguyen unearths profound yet simple truths: we\, as human beings\, weave the fabric of our realities much like a sky net—often unaware of our role as creators. Entangled in the intricate webs of our own making\, we forget we are their architects\, lost in the stories we script and perform.\n\nThe reference to “Lưới trời Đế Thích” (Indra’s Net) deepens this philosophical inquiry. As a symbol of the interconnectedness of all things\, Indra’s Net suggests that each part mirrors and influences the whole\, revealing the boundless complexity of existence. This eternal question of reality versus illusion—like the dream-like play we both create and inhabit—remains unanswered\, lingering as an open meditation.\n\nThe artists of “Who is Weaving the Sky Net?” weave their narratives and materials with a shared grace\, drawing connections between fabric and life’s delicate interconnectedness. Through distinct approaches and methods\, they engage this age-old inquiry: Doan Van Toi’s work\, rooted in Buddhist philosophy\, resonates with a peaceful acceptance of life\, while Leila Seyedzadeh’s pieces are imbued with poetic reflections on homeland. DESCRIPTION:Intercultural Theatre Institute presents Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Metamorphosis\, directed by Aarne Neeme and performed by the ITI graduating class of 2024. This gripping retelling of Franz Kafka’s iconic novella melds abstract physical theatre and psychological drama with elements of dark comedy. \nThe story follows Gregor Samsa\, a young man who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a giant insect. As he grapples with his new grotesque form\, Gregor’s once-supportive family begins to unravel\, revealing deep-seated fears and hidden resentments. Set in a claustrophobic atmosphere with minimalist staging\, the play explores themes of alienation\, identity\, and the crushing weight of societal expectations. \nThis adaptation of Metamorphosis remains faithful to Kafka’s original work while showcasing Berkoff’s unique approach to theatre. The result is a production that not only reflects on the fragility of identity and the human condition but also resonates with contemporary audiences facing the pressures of modern society.

SUMMARY:Temporal Oscillations. Electronics workshop led by artist Chok Si Xuan
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore how to use common electronic components to modulate the flow of electricity\, assemble and hijack standard systems of temporality. Participants will learn how a 555 timer integrated circuit (IC) forms an astable multivibrator. The 555 timer IC is a tiny chip found in many everyday devices—blinking LED lights\, kitchen timers\, alarm systems\, sound makers\, etc.—that modulates the frequencies of electrical signals. The term ‘astable’ means ‘not stable’ because the circuit never settles into a single state\, is a basic electronic circuit that generates a continuous oscillating output\, switching between two voltage levels. \nWorking with pre-assembled circuits created by the artist\, participants will be able to experiment with various components (small motors\, LED lights\, and speakers\, etc) as outputs. Exploring the transformation of different forms of energy—chemical energy from batteries\, mechanical energy \, kinetic energy and byproduct thermal energy\, the workshop accesses materiality as a manner of understanding the fundamental ways systems unfold. \nThrough engaging with electronic circuits in a hands-on and accessible way\, participants can expect to develop a direct understanding of some visible and less visible aspects that power everyday technology. Participants are encouraged to bring their own components for experimentation. These may include battery-operated toys\, LED lights or small light strips\, buzzers or small speakers\, direct current (DC) motors\, small fans\, switches or buttons\, old electronic parts like sensors or wires\, and similar items. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice.
