SUMMARY:Mattude
DESCRIPTION:Featuring works by Aziziah Diah Aprilya (Indonesia)\nRecipient of the 7th Objectifs Documentary Award\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Jessica Lim\n4 April to 18 May 2025\nLower Gallery 2\, Objectifs\nFree admission \nOpening | 4 Apr 2025\, 12pm – 7pm \nArtist Talk: Aziziah Diah Aprilya – Collecting the Clams\nSat 5 Apr 2025\, 1pm – 2pm | Objectifs Workshop Space (register here) \nMattude is a project where I document the effects of reclamation projects along the coast of Makassar\, my hometown in South Sulawesi in Indonesia. Mattude – a local term which means “collecting the clams” – has also come to represent my way of collecting and sharing stories about the resilience of the coastal women of Makassar. \nThe Makassar city government’s reclamation plans echoes similar developments throughout Indonesia. Reclamation in Makassar started in the late 1990s with road construction\, then housing areas\, flats\, hotels\, malls\, a new port\, and more. To date\, 209 hectares of land have been reclaimed\, and it is expected that thousands more hectares will be created along the west and north of Makassar’s coastline. The Makassar City Spatial Plan anticipates that reclamation will expand 26% of the city area. \nBefore reclamation began\, the coast of Makassar was a lively fishing community where people could get various types of fish\, clams and crabs. For the coastal women\, the sea was a means of livelihood\, a shared social space\, a playground for their children\, and a sacred place for rituals. \nAccording to indigenous coastal beliefs\, ancestors are thought to live in the water in various forms. There are crocodiles\, snakes\, dolphins\, fish\, centipedes\, they say. In Bugis and Makassar culture\, many still believe that each person has twin crocodiles. We call these ancestors ‘Nene’ or grandmother. During certain celebrations\, offerings must be lowered into the sea or river as a sign of gratitude to the grandmother\, ancestors\, and nature. These rituals are said to prevent bad luck and disaster\, and are led by women. \nAs reclamation continues\, the livelihoods and practices of coastal communities have come increasingly under threat. They have lost touch with coastal creatures and tide changes. They are losing their physical and spiritual relationship to the sea. \nSince 2017\, the coastal women of Makassar have gathered as a means of survival and resistance. They organize protests against the reclamation\, and find other ways of making a living. As the excavators reclaim the coast\, these women seek to reclaim their own narratives. \nPresented by Objectifs \nSupported by the Truthseeker Foundation \n___ \nAbout the Artist \nAziziah Diah Aprilya (b.1997)\, also known as Zizi\, is an Indonesian photographer\, writer\, and art and cultural practitioner based in Makassar\, South Sulawesi. SUMMARY:Tubig Alat (Salt Water)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring works by Geela Garcia (Philippines)\nRecipient of the 7th Objectifs Documentary Award\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Jessica Lim \n4 April to 18 May 2025\nLower Gallery 1\, Objectifs\nFree admission \nOpening | 4 Apr 2025\, 12pm – 7pm \nAll life depends on Salt: An Artist talk with Geela Garcia\nSat 5 Apr 2025\, 4pm – 5pm | Objectifs Workshop Space (register here) \nSmoke blankets the room where Emma Ganila has been scooping brine into an assembly line of tin cans. As salt water boils and evaporates in the tins\, blocks of white salt form. Emma has been making Tultul\, an artisanal salt only found on Guimaras island. \nOn Iloilo\, an island right across Emma’s\, Lorlie Noblezada watches her son\, John\, face strong breaking waves as he collects seawater with a bamboo pole to start the process of making Budbud salt. \nEmma and Lorlie are some of the last artisanal saltmakers in the Philippines. Both have been safekeeping traditional saltmaking processes for decades. However\, this craft is in fast decline. \nDespite a long history of saltmaking\, the Philippines\, an archipelago with the fifth-longest coastline in the world\, has not produced enough salt for its own needs for the past 15 years. The country has some of the rarest salts in the world\, including Tultul and Budbud\, and it only needs to ultilise six percent of its coastline to be self-sufficient in salt. But local salts are on the brink of extinction due to unsupportive policies\, industry neglect\, and climate change. \nThe process of making artisanal salt is time-consuming and laborious\, but still\, Emma\, at 74\, spends her day inside the warm and smoky production house to cook blocks of Tultul salt; Lorlie assesses the seasons and checks if the skies are clear to schedule production of Budbud salt. For these matriarchs\, this craft\, as much as it is a livelihood\, is what binds their families’ day-to-day living. \nAll life depends on salt. \nPresented by Objectifs \nSupported by the Truthseeker Foundation \n______ \nAbout the artist \nGeela Garcia is a Filipino photographer and multimedia journalist based in Manila\, Philippines. Her photographic work\, which documents stories of women\, food sovereignty\, and the environment\, aims to write history from the experience of its makers. \nShe received the Seed Award from the Prince Claus Fund in 2023 for her photojournalism work\, and is currently a Shifting Democracies Fellow at Global Press. \nGeela’s writing and photography appear on the Thomson Reuters Foundation – Context News\, South China Morning Post\, and Rappler among others. SUMMARY:The Forest Listens\, Their Spirits Cry
DESCRIPTION:Featuring works by Gab Mejia (Philippines)\nRecipient of the 7th Objectifs Documentary Award\, Open Category\nCurated by Goh Sze Ying \n4 Apr to 18 May 2025\nChapel Gallery\, Objectifs\nFree admission \nOpening | 4 Apr 2025\, 12pm – 7pm \nNature and Spirit: An Artist Talk with Gab Mejia\nSat 5 Apr 2025\, 2.30pm – 3.30pm | Objectifs Workshop Space (Register here) \n\nRevered as healers\, warriors\, and teachers\, the Baylans of the Talaandig-Manobo have long been guardians of the sacred forests of Mount Kaluntungan in the southern Philippine province of Bukidnon\, threatened by an encroaching industrial pace since the Spanish and American colonial period. For the Baylans\, the forest is a sacred site—a portal\, a threshold. Nature and spirit abide in the Talaandig-Manobo narrative.\nGab Mejia pays homage to this verdant landscape and its people by directing our attention to the queer kinship of two central figures: a head spiritual leader Datu Arayan\, and a Baylan initiate and youth leader Krystahl Guina. A new generation of Baylans\, they are also members of the Kulahi Pangantucan Performing Arts Group—storytellers\, performers\, protectors of indigenous heritage. Mejia’s dreamlike portraits animate Datu and Krystal’s deep\, unspoken spiritual connection with their land\, home\, and family amidst the quiet domesticity of their daily rhythms. \nThe Forest Listens\, Their Spirits Cry speaks of a desire to pollinate a dream of a future belonging otherwise. \nPresented by Objectifs and supported by the Truthseeker Foundation. \n\nAbout the Artist \nGab Mejia (he/they) is a queer Filipino photographer\, multidisciplinary artist\, and environmental engineer. Born and raised in the Philippine archipelago\, his work unveils the threads of the climate crisis\, biodiversity loss\, ancestral knowledge\, cosmologies\, and cultural interconnections to confront our socio-political and ecological crises. \nMejia is a National Geographic Explorer\, Climate Pledge Global Storyteller\, Fellow in the International League of Conservation Photographers and 2019 Jackson Wild Media Lab Fellow. His work has appeared in National Geographic\, BBC\, CNN\, ArtPartner\, Vogue\, United Nations\, Manila Times\, Fotografiska Shanghai\, Photo London and TEDx talks amongst other publications and platforms. He is a Board of Trustee for the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines. \nAbout the Curator \nGoh Sze Ying is Curator at National Gallery Singapore. At the Gallery\, she contributes to the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery long-term display\, Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th century. More recently\, she worked on exhibitions including Living Pictures: Photography in Southeast Asia (2022)\, Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia (2022)\, and Something New Must Turn Up (2020). In 2019\, she co-curated the sixth edition of the Singapore Biennale\, Every Step in the Right Direction. \nAbout the Objectifs Documentary Award \nThe Objectifs Documentary Award champions Objectifs’ mission to broaden perspectives through image making\, by supporting original voices in visual storytelling in Singapore and the wider region. SUMMARY:an arrangement of/for random words by jo+kapi
DESCRIPTION:SMU Libraries is pleased to present an arrangement of/for random words\, a solo exhibition by jo+kapi. The exhibition concludes their artist residency with SMU Libraries\, during which they furthered their research and artistic collaboration with machine intelligences. \nIn the age of predictive text and machine-generated fluency\, language is beginning to feel unstable. Scraped\, clustered\, tokenized\, and recombined at scale\, words are no longer chosen so much as they are predicted. Meaning starts to feel hollow\, and uncertainty creeps in. an arrangement of/for random words explores this shifting terrain\, where language resists being fixed and meaning becomes increasingly difficult to hold onto. \nAt the heart of the exhibition is Enzyme 2.0\, a screen-based installation that digests a manifesto word by word\, revealing how semiotic structure can be erased\, rewritten\, or momentarily glimpsed before they disappear again. \njo+kapi is a creative collaboration between media artists and creative technologists Jo Ho and Kapilan Naidu. Founded in 2021\, the Singapore-based collective creates and curates interactive experiences and media art exhibitions centred around the duo’s shared interests in generative art\, artificial intelligence and the transforming modes of creating and consuming digital art in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Documentary Filmmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is not your average documentary workshop. It’s not about the latest gear\, or the trendiest topic\, or how to make your video go viral. This is about how life is often stranger than fiction\, what the functions and techniques of documentary are\, and how to tell a compelling non-fiction story for the screen. \nThe process of ideating\, producing\, filming\, editing your own documentary\, plus overcoming the various challenges that will come along with making a documentary\, will be the craft journey you will embark upon as a class across the 6 sessions. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have made a documentary that you can truly call your own\, and present it to the class in a film screening. \nThere will also be a screening of films by the class which is open to friends and family at the end of the workshop. \nWorkshop Fee: $950 (eligible for use of SkillsFuture Credit) \nInstructor: Jessica Lee \nPlease register via the form on our website.

SUMMARY:Staging Realities
DESCRIPTION:ShanghART Singapore is proud to present Staging Realities\, a group exhibition featuring works by Lynn Hershman Leeson\, Melati Suryodarmo\, Tang Maohong\, Yang Fudong\, Zhou Tiehai and Zhu Jia. \nImplying a state of “becoming”\, the exhibition showcases portrait works in which the subjects are depicted in staged or posed positions\, whether in stillness or in motion. Rather than seeking to represent everyday scenes from the real world\, the works suggest an ongoing endeavor to form new\, fictional or imagined ones. With each mise en scene\, the artists empower us as viewers to experience their works on our own terms\, forming new perceptions and in turn\, creating alternative realities. \nDrawing from ancient Chinese classics and paintings\, Yang Fudong’s Endless Peaks series takes us on a journey traversing time and space in his investigation into the essence of human spirituality. Also borrowing elements of traditional portraiture but this time Western\, Zhou Tiehai and Tang Maohong re-enact their subjects: Zhou depicting his in A Dog’s Life and The Duke of Wellington in an idealised manner to convey their elevated status and position of power and importance; while Tang takes a classical\, sculptural approach in his A Part of Classics – 3. For both artists\, their injection of contemporary humour brings a plot twist to their narratives.\nThe works of Melati Suryodarmo and Lynn Hershman Leeson reveal the role of the camera lens and its relationship with whom it captures. Suryodarmo’s Tomorrow\, As Purposed series\, which began as a dance theatre piece inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth\, invites viewers to observe and question\, the bodily content framed in theatrical gestures. In a seemingly reversal of positions in Leeson’s Reach\, the camera—usually out of sight from the audience\, becomes the centre of attention. This exploration of identity is also reflected in Zhu Jia’s Zero\, through the performance and introspection of self by his female protagonist.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Death From Above 1979
DESCRIPTION:Two decades of absolute electricity culminates in one explosive tour: Beginning in 2024\, Death From Above 1979 (DFA 1979) celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut LP You’re A Woman\, I’m A Machine\, a genre-bending iconoclastic cult classic that sounds as fresh today as it did in 2004. Dubbed “dance-punk” by the UK press\, their music doesn’t merely suggest\, it commands those who hear it to the grimy\, feverish and dimly-lit dance floor. \nTo celebrate\, the band are playing furiously around the world while endeavouring on a year-long recording project to reinvigorate and honour their iconic flagship album. 20 years is a long time for rock ‘n’ roll\, but the odometer turns slowly for this power duo. As explosive as ever\, DFA 1979 summons their fans to the pit to revel in their uniquely infectious\, high-octane rock n’ roll.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Luna Li
DESCRIPTION:“Luna has real classical music chops\, and her tracks often have more bubbling under the surface than your usual indie pop.”\n– npr \nEmbarking on her first Asia tour\, the magnetic Luna Li returns to Singapore for her first headlining concert here. \nA wildly talented songwriter\, arranger\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist\, Luna Li’s sonic universe is a perfect amalgamation of her many talents. Through intricate instrumental melodies and multi-layered arrangements\, the Korean-Canadian artist weaves together a sonic universe of dreamy\, baroque-pop with elements of soft rock\, charming a growing legion of fans with her unique brand of cinematic dream pop. \nHaving first garnered attention online in 2020\, she went on to release her debut EP\, Duality\, featuring the likes of Jay Som\, beabadoobee\, and Dreamer Isioma. This record generated hits such as Afterglow\, Misery Moon and Silver Into Rain\, and garnered a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. This rising star went on to open and tour with the likes of Japanese Breakfast\, Wolf Alice\, and beabadobee. \nBut set against When a Thought Grows Wings\, her debut feels like a stepping stone to her sweet spot. This sophomore album is a snapshot of its creator influx. For the 27-year-old\, born Hannah Bussiere Kim\, the journey was tumultuous\, pivotal and necessary. After splitting with her partner of eight years and leaving her hometown of Toronto for Los Angeles\, she found her world opening in new ways. \nWeaving her harp-rippled\, baroque-pop through with jazz flute and gritty riffs\, the album is a testament to Luna Li’s prowess as a charismatic front person\, songwriter\, arranger and continuously curious multi-instrumentalist. Making her debut at Esplanade for her first headline show in Singapore\, Luna Li is set to sweep audiences off their feet with her undeniable stage presence and unique sonic palette.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: YĪN YĪN
DESCRIPTION:Vibrant\, shimmery and irresistibly groovy\, YĪN YĪN’s cinematic sound has propelled this largely instrumental four-piece band into unexpected global heights. \nHailing from Holland’s southernmost city of Maastricht\, the band first caught the attention of listeners globally by meticulously crafting a unique sound that married psychedelia\, funk\, disco with Asian influences. They first burst onto the scene in 2019 with the Thai psychrock-influenced The Rabbit that Hunts Tigers\, which they performed across several shows to great reception\, including at the famed Lowlands festival. During the pandemic\, the band wrote and recorded The Age of Aquarius\, later released in 2022. Described as spiritual and cosmic\, the record retained the band’s distinct Southeast Asian influence while diving even deeper into dancefloor propulsion and space travel atmospherics. \nYĪN YĪN marked yet another evolution with their 2024 album\, Mount Matsu\, the first record collectively created by all members of the band. Deeply informed by both the imaginative sound waves of the cosmos as well as the earthly musical culture of Japan\, Mount Matsu is infectious\, strangely harmonious and highly energetic. The album’s sound is somewhat of a synthesis of their first two records\, utilising pentatonic scales and vintage synthesisers for their signature sound\, built on a solid foundation of psychedelic disco\, fat global funk\, electronics and tribal experiments. \nMaking their way to Singapore for the first time\, YĪN YĪN invites you into their expansive sonic cosmos: join the fray and let your fantasy run wild\, dance your heart out and ascend Mount Matsu with YĪN YĪN.

SUMMARY:Design Earth: Speculative Fiction for the Climate
DESCRIPTION:Design Earth: Speculative Fiction for the Climate springs from the conviction that climate change demands urgent transformations in the ways we care for and design the Earth. DESIGN EARTH\, a research practice founded and led by Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy engages the medium of the speculative architectural project to make public the climate crisis. This work is often developed simultaneously through the medium of drawing and the creation of books\, two of which are excerpted and put in conversation in this art exhibition. Geostories: Another Architecture for the Environment (Actar Publishers\, 2018) is a manifesto for environmental imagination in twelve architectural projects engaging the planetary scale through drawing divided by the organising principles of Aquarium\, Terrarium\, and Planetarium. This exhibition highlights three chapters from the larger work: After Oil\, 2016\, Pacific Aquarium\, 2016\, and Cosmorama\, 2018. The Planet After Geoengineering (Actar Publishers\, 2021) is a graphic novel which imagines the worlds of climate modification technologies and their controversies. Together these projects help us begin to consider and address the open question: how (else) could we tell the story of the Earth? \nCurated by Karin Oen \nDesign Earth: Speculative Fiction for the Climate is co-organised by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art and ADM Gallery \nADM Gallery 2 NTU\, School of Art\, Design and Media 81 Nanyang Dr\, Singapore 637458 \nArtist talk and Curator (de)Tour on 13 June 2025. SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Beach Fossils
DESCRIPTION:Rising to prominence in the 2010s amidst a surge of left-of-center indie pop\, Beach Fossils quickly amassed a loyal cult following thanks to its dreamy\, far-away sound\, grounded by dreary\, realist lyricism. Throughout the last fifteen years\, they have steadily earned their stature as one of the most definitive and enduring bands emerging from the 2010s New York underground. They consistently reach new listeners thanks to the steady evolution of their sound from the DIY solo project of Dustin Payseur to an influential self-produced four-piece dream pop band\, where Payseur is joined by core band members Tommy Davidson (guitar)\, Jack Doyle Smith (bass)\, and Anton Hochheim (drums). \nNow\, after seven years\, this iconic quartet returns to Singapore with new material alongside fan favourite songs\, drawing from beloved albums such as the recently-released Bunny (2023)\, the jangly melancholy of their self-titled 2010 album\, the gritty post-punk inspired Class the Truth (2013)\, and many more. Through tone and mood\, Beach Fossils communicate a coming-of-age narrative of self-discovery. Payseur’s slice-of-life lyrics reflect on depression\, love\, adventure\, loss\, mistakes\, New York City\, friendships coming and going—a mélange of granular pieces in the process of continuing to find yourself.

SUMMARY:T:>Works: Living Soil Series — A Film Double Bill: Sandcastles (2024) and Moving Earth (2024)
DESCRIPTION:T:>Works introduces the Living Soil Series as part of CoThink Lab\, kicking off with a double-bill film screening:Sandcastles (2024) by Carin Leong and Moving Earth (2024) by Ian Mun. \n  \nWhat do we consider as home? The constructed complex we live in? The land where we make our livelihood?  \n  \n‘Sandcastles’ (2024) by Carin Leong draws parallels between a lost 19th-century Michigan town swallowed by sand and modern Singapore\, built on reclaimed land\, highlighting the ephemeral nature of human creations. ‘Moving Earth’ (2024) by Ian Mun is a nostalgic look at the Ground-Up Initiative in Singapore as they relocate\, celebrating their connection to the earth and its importance of soil in our lives. \n  \nWe invite the audience to participate in a pre-show activity to pen down stories of relocation and land reclamation. There will also be a post-film panel discussion featuring ‘Sandcastles’ producer Martin Loh\, ‘Moving Earth’ director Ian Mun\, and Bing Yu from Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) — a non-profit society dedicated to fostering sustainable kampung culture through active community participation.

SUMMARY:Imprints of a Vanished Time: Paintings and Prints by Lim Mu Hue
DESCRIPTION:artcommune proudly presents Imprints of a Vanished Time: Paintings and Prints by Lim Mu Hue\, an exhibition that spotlights the late Singapore artist’s dynamic exploration across oil\, ink\, woodcut and mixed media works. Featuring 19 works dating to the period of 1950s to 2002\, the show traces Lim’s thoughtful synthesis of Western academic techniques and deep sensitivity to local themes and identity. Lim Mu Hue (1936–2008\, Singapore) was a second-generation Singapore artist best known for his oil works and woodblock prints executed in a realist and often narrative-driven style. Born in 1936 to a Teochew family of Chinese descent\, Lim grew up in a period of social change and nation-building in early Singapore. His art would later reflect these historical shifts through intimate\, detailed portrayals of ordinary people\, local landscapes and vanishing trades. \nLim received his formal training at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA)\, graduating in 1955 with a Diploma in Western Painting. There\, he studied under key figures of the Nanyang art style and was exposed to both Chinese and Western art mediums. Much of Lim’s output in the 1950s was focussed on Western oil\, charcoal\, watercolour\, and pastel works\, with many revealing of his spirited experimentation across the academic genres of landscape\, still life and portrait. \nManager of a Rubber Plantation Estate\, for instance\, portrays a figure that comes across as quietly dignified and almost austere in presence. Lim highlights particular physical traits of the figure\, such as histanned skin\, rugged arms\, and lean yet muscular frame to convey a daily life characterised by outdoor exposure and active labour. The steely greens of the background and opaque blacks of the pants are deployed in high contrast against the warm ochres of the skin and variated shades of whites used to illustrate the shirt and the hat. Lim combines clarity with tenderness in his treatment of the form to carve out a chiaroscuro-like focus\, giving the portrait a monumental and industrial character.
