DESCRIPTION:parts of some body\nA body of work about its parts \n20 & 21 March 2025 @ Stamford Arts Centre Black Box \nDirected by Marzipan \nPerformed by Alton\, Din\, Jing Wen & Shruthi \nDuration: 1hr (inclusive of post show dialogue)\, no intermission \nRating: to be advised \n  \n“parts of some body” is a celebration of the physicality of the dancer through our body parts. We use the body in its entirety\, yet our mastery of it is tested through its isolated intricacies and articulation. The body is our tool\, our language and our temple. It is made up of body parts\, each with its own unique story\, performing a function on its own as well as in tandem with others to achieve more than the sum of its parts. This is the deconstruction of the human body – made up of multiple dancers\, in a surreal world where body parts float\, move on their own and tell of their struggles and triumphs. \n  \nIt is directed by ‘Marzipan’ aka Marcus Tan (IG: marzipansgd) who is more than just a dancer—he is a seeker\, a storyteller\, and a bridge between movement and meaning. Constantly developing his craft through the lens of a choreographer\, educator\, performer and community driver. Marzipan’s style of work often crosses between the boundaries of tradition\, heritage and innovation. He uses street dance language layered with contemporary thought and experimentation to create worlds of exploration. His work is performed by a versatile cast\, Jing Wen\, Alton\, Din & Shruthi who have rich backgrounds in street\, traditional and contemporary dance styles. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Private Museum is delighted to present Love Connects: My Life in Dance by  Goh Soo Khim\, a book launch accompanied by a special exhibition that offers a glimpse into her journey in dance\, her artistic influences\, and her enduring legacy in the cultural landscape in Singapore. \nCultural Medallion recipient Goh Soo Khim is a pioneering figure whose influence extends far beyond the stage. As co-founder of the Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT)\, now known as Singapore Ballet\, the doyenne has shaped the landscape of dance in Singapore\, nurturing generations of dancers. \nHer memoir\, as told by Phan Ming Yen\, traces a life in motion—chronicling the triumphs\, sacrifices\, and the devotion that have defined her life in dance and beyond. In dialogue with the book\, the exhibition explores vignettes of life-long relationships forged through art and poignant moments from her time with SDT. \nThe exhibition presents a series of photographs by Robin PE Chee and Tan Ngiap Heng\, long-time photographers who have documented SDT’s performances for decades—alongside an intimate selection of works from her private collection\, featuring renowned and established artists whose works resonate with her journey. Through the lens of photography and the visual arts\, it highlights the artistic collaborations\, shared influences\, and her enduring love for the arts. \nAt the heart of both the book and the exhibition is a singular theme—love. Love\, in its purest form\, is the driving force behind all that Goh Soo Khim has built: the communities she has nurtured\, the dancers she has inspired\, and the legacy she continues to shape.

DESCRIPTION:Faith and Forms \nThe Visual and Material Legacy of Christianity in China\, from the 17th Century to Today \nChristianity reached China as early as the seventh century\, during the Tang dynasty. However\, its presence was limited until the arrival of several Jesuit missions in the sixteenth century\, which also brought Western science\, mathematics\, astronomy\, cartography\, and art to China.  \nIn this two-day conference\, scholars and experts from around the world come together to examine the complex relationship between Christianity and Chinese culture. Speakers will explore how Christian ideas\, aesthetics\, and religious iconography have been woven into the fabric of Chinese visual art\, material culture\, and architecture\, from the seventeenth century to today. \nThis conference is held in conjunction with the special exhibition Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco (till 1 June 2025).

DESCRIPTION:📖 Book Reading! 📖 \nJoin us for a special reading session of our book ‘Our Home\, Our Stories: Voices of Migrant Domestic Workers in Singapore’ on 23 March\, Sunday\, 3PM at Book Bar! \n‘Our Home\, Our Stories’ offers a look through the eyes of domestic workers as they share real-life stories\, from childhoods in mountain villages to rogue agents and difficult employers\, and that one thing they all suffer from the most: homesickness\, and the pain of leaving their families behind – in Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Myanmar and India. \nOur contributors\, Jo Ann Dumlao\, Kina Hidayah Kastari\, Novia Arluma\, and Miriam Escander will be reading their stories at the event. The session will be moderated by the book’s editor Karien van Ditzhuijzen\, a long-time HOME volunteer who conducts writing workshops at HOME’s shelter. \nBooks will be available for sale at $20 each!

SUMMARY:The Choir of Keble College Oxford in Singapore
DESCRIPTION:The Choir of Keble College is one of Oxford’s leading mixed-voice ensembles. It is made up of undergraduate and postgraduate members of the University of Oxford and is central to the life of the College’s chapel\, perhaps the grandest ecclesiastical space in Oxford. Many of our choral scholars go on to pursue careers as professional singers with recent graduates gaining places with top developmental groups including Genesis Sixteen and the Voces8 Scholars. In recent years the choir has performed in Italy\, France\, Hong Kong\, Singapore\, the Czech Republic and Sweden\, as well as widely in the UK\, and regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio. The choir has made a number of CD recordings\, which have received enthusiastic reviews. The latest\, ‘Resurrexi! DESCRIPTION:Featuring works by Aziziah Diah Aprilya (Indonesia)\nRecipient of the 7th Objectifs Documentary Award\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Jessica Lim\n4 April to 18 May 2025\nLower Gallery 2\, Objectifs\nFree admission \nOpening | 4 Apr 2025\, 12pm – 7pm \nArtist Talk: Aziziah Diah Aprilya – Collecting the Clams\nSat 5 Apr 2025\, 1pm – 2pm | Objectifs Workshop Space (register here) \nMattude is a project where I document the effects of reclamation projects along the coast of Makassar\, my hometown in South Sulawesi in Indonesia. Mattude – a local term which means “collecting the clams” – has also come to represent my way of collecting and sharing stories about the resilience of the coastal women of Makassar. \nThe Makassar city government’s reclamation plans echoes similar developments throughout Indonesia. Reclamation in Makassar started in the late 1990s with road construction\, then housing areas\, flats\, hotels\, malls\, a new port\, and more. To date\, 209 hectares of land have been reclaimed\, and it is expected that thousands more hectares will be created along the west and north of Makassar’s coastline. The Makassar City Spatial Plan anticipates that reclamation will expand 26% of the city area. \nBefore reclamation began\, the coast of Makassar was a lively fishing community where people could get various types of fish\, clams and crabs. For the coastal women\, the sea was a means of livelihood\, a shared social space\, a playground for their children\, and a sacred place for rituals. \nAccording to indigenous coastal beliefs\, ancestors are thought to live in the water in various forms. There are crocodiles\, snakes\, dolphins\, fish\, centipedes\, they say. In Bugis and Makassar culture\, many still believe that each person has twin crocodiles. We call these ancestors ‘Nene’ or grandmother. During certain celebrations\, offerings must be lowered into the sea or river as a sign of gratitude to the grandmother\, ancestors\, and nature. These rituals are said to prevent bad luck and disaster\, and are led by women. \nAs reclamation continues\, the livelihoods and practices of coastal communities have come increasingly under threat. They have lost touch with coastal creatures and tide changes. They are losing their physical and spiritual relationship to the sea. \nSince 2017\, the coastal women of Makassar have gathered as a means of survival and resistance. They organize protests against the reclamation\, and find other ways of making a living. As the excavators reclaim the coast\, these women seek to reclaim their own narratives. \nPresented by Objectifs \nSupported by the Truthseeker Foundation \n___ \nAbout the Artist \nAziziah Diah Aprilya (b.1997)\, also known as Zizi\, is an Indonesian photographer\, writer\, and art and cultural practitioner based in Makassar\, South Sulawesi. Her works often explore environmental\, social-cultural\, and women issues\, and she is also interested in stories about food\, rituals\, and mythologies. Zizi’s work has been exhibited in Jakarta\, Solo\, Yogyakarta\, and Makassar\, and she recently published her first photobook\, Got Your Back (SOKONG! Publisher\, 2024). \nIn Makassar\, she works closely with urban studies collective\, art communities\, and literacy groups. Zizi is part of Diversify Photo and Women Photograph and is frequently involved in film production as a still and behind-the-scenes photographer. \nAbout the Mentor \nJessica Lim is currently the director of Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops (APFW)\, a non-profit association based in Cambodia. For most of her professional life\, she has worked to provide support and opportunities to visual storytellers in the majority world. Her move to Cambodia built on her previous experience with Drik Picture Library in Dhaka\, Bangladesh\, a media organisation dedicated to advocating for social equality\, where she served as a news and photo editor and photographer liaison. She majored in journalism and graduated from the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore in 2006. \nJessica is currently based in Siem Reap\, Cambodia\, where on any given day there is a good chance of meeting water buffalos. \n— \nAbout the Objectifs Documentary Award \nThe Objectifs Documentary Award champions Objectifs’ mission to broaden perspectives through image making\, by supporting original voices in visual storytelling in Singapore and the wider region. Emma has been making Tultul\, an artisanal salt only found on Guimaras island. \nOn Iloilo\, an island right across Emma’s\, Lorlie Noblezada watches her son\, John\, face strong breaking waves as he collects seawater with a bamboo pole to start the process of making Budbud salt. \nEmma and Lorlie are some of the last artisanal saltmakers in the Philippines. Both have been safekeeping traditional saltmaking processes for decades. However\, this craft is in fast decline. \nDespite a long history of saltmaking\, the Philippines\, an archipelago with the fifth-longest coastline in the world\, has not produced enough salt for its own needs for the past 15 years. The country has some of the rarest salts in the world\, including Tultul and Budbud\, and it only needs to ultilise six percent of its coastline to be self-sufficient in salt. But local salts are on the brink of extinction due to unsupportive policies\, industry neglect\, and climate change. \nThe process of making artisanal salt is time-consuming and laborious\, but still\, Emma\, at 74\, spends her day inside the warm and smoky production house to cook blocks of Tultul salt; Lorlie assesses the seasons and checks if the skies are clear to schedule production of Budbud salt. DESCRIPTION:SMU Libraries is pleased to present an arrangement of/for random words\, a solo exhibition by jo+kapi. The exhibition concludes their artist residency with SMU Libraries\, during which they furthered their research and artistic collaboration with machine intelligences. \nIn the age of predictive text and machine-generated fluency\, language is beginning to feel unstable. Scraped\, clustered\, tokenized\, and recombined at scale\, words are no longer chosen so much as they are predicted. Meaning starts to feel hollow\, and uncertainty creeps in. an arrangement of/for random words explores this shifting terrain\, where language resists being fixed and meaning becomes increasingly difficult to hold onto. \nAt the heart of the exhibition is Enzyme 2.0\, a screen-based installation that digests a manifesto word by word\, revealing how semiotic structure can be erased\, rewritten\, or momentarily glimpsed before they disappear again. \njo+kapi is a creative collaboration between media artists and creative technologists Jo Ho and Kapilan Naidu. Founded in 2021\, the Singapore-based collective creates and curates interactive experiences and media art exhibitions centred around the duo’s shared interests in generative art\, artificial intelligence and the transforming modes of creating and consuming digital art in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Staging Realities
DESCRIPTION:ShanghART Singapore is proud to present Staging Realities\, a group exhibition featuring works by Lynn Hershman Leeson\, Melati Suryodarmo\, Tang Maohong\, Yang Fudong\, Zhou Tiehai and Zhu Jia. \nImplying a state of “becoming”\, the exhibition showcases portrait works in which the subjects are depicted in staged or posed positions\, whether in stillness or in motion. Rather than seeking to represent everyday scenes from the real world\, the works suggest an ongoing endeavor to form new\, fictional or imagined ones. With each mise en scene\, the artists empower us as viewers to experience their works on our own terms\, forming new perceptions and in turn\, creating alternative realities. \nDrawing from ancient Chinese classics and paintings\, Yang Fudong’s Endless Peaks series takes us on a journey traversing time and space in his investigation into the essence of human spirituality. Also borrowing elements of traditional portraiture but this time Western\, Zhou Tiehai and Tang Maohong re-enact their subjects: Zhou depicting his in A Dog’s Life and The Duke of Wellington in an idealised manner to convey their elevated status and position of power and importance; while Tang takes a classical\, sculptural approach in his A Part of Classics – 3. For both artists\, their injection of contemporary humour brings a plot twist to their narratives.\nThe works of Melati Suryodarmo and Lynn Hershman Leeson reveal the role of the camera lens and its relationship with whom it captures. Suryodarmo’s Tomorrow\, As Purposed series\, which began as a dance theatre piece inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth\, invites viewers to observe and question\, the bodily content framed in theatrical gestures. In a seemingly reversal of positions in Leeson’s Reach\, the camera—usually out of sight from the audience\, becomes the centre of attention. This exploration of identity is also reflected in Zhu Jia’s Zero\, through the performance and introspection of self by his female protagonist.
