SUMMARY:Storytelling Through Photography Course
DESCRIPTION:Photography has the power to capture moments in time\, document events\, and record our experiences. How can we move beyond strong single images and start to tell compelling visual stories? \nIn this workshop\, participants begin by exploring the work of established documentary photographers. They will learn to develop their vision by identifying themes of personal interest and finding stories around them. The course takes a hands-on approach to visual storytelling\, with participants shooting images weekly and receiving feedback from the instructor and in group critiques. In the process\, they learn the principles\, ethics of and approaches to documentary photography and refine their work. \nParticipants in this course should possess basic technical proficiency in photography and have an interest in visual storytelling and documentary photography. They will maximise their learning in the course if they commit to working on their photo story between sessions. This course will also be useful to those who want to use documentary photography and visual storytelling across a variety of disciplines from advocacy\, to marketing\, to journalism and more. \nParticipants are to use their own cameras and other softwares (if applicable) which they are comfortable with for this workshop. \nKindly note that this instalment of the workshop will run in a hybrid model\, consisting of a mixture of in-person and online sessions. SUMMARY:TOOLS: A Workshop Series for Playwrights Exploring Theatricality - Stage Directions
DESCRIPTION:Tools is a workshop series by our visiting resident playwright Sean Dunnington for playwrights curious about theatricality—the unique magic of theatre that invites audiences to “believe” what they see on stage is true-to-life\, even while knowing it’s not real (to an extent). Each session dives into a specific element of this conceptual spell\, blending discussion\, hands-on activities\, performance\, and experimentation. \nJoin us for the first workshop this January which will look at Stage Directions. In this workshop\, we’ll explore what stage directions can do beyond blocking and lighting cues. How can they become indispensable to the play? Can they describe things that never appear? Should they be interpreted as literal\, tonal\, or something else entirely? Can they dare be ignored? Through examples and practice\, we’ll test how much stage directions can shape a play. \nThis workshop is suitable for playwrights/writers who are engaged with/thinking about craft at a serious level.

SUMMARY:Open Call: Objectifs X Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Objectifs x Momo Short Film Incubator is an initiative that focuses on developing short film scripts. The programme is open to Southeast Asian filmmakers working with moving images\, and will provide five selected participants with mentorship and a valuable support network as they work on their scripts. \nThe Objectifs x Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator will run from 2 June – 19 July 2025. This year’s incubator will take place with a hybrid format\, with weeks 1 to 5 conducted online\, and the sessions from 17 to 20 July will be conducted in person at Objectifs. Participants will learn storyboarding\, creating a shooting script\, production management\, casting\, directing\, working on a crew\, cinematography\, lighting\, sound and finally editing. The workshop includes on-location hands-on camera work and consultation\, as participants work together in teams to complete individual short films. DESCRIPTION:Rickshaw Boy narrates the life of Xiangzi\, a rickshaw puller in Beiping during the Republic of China era. A strong and ambitious young man from the countryside\, Xiangzi dreams of building an ideal life through his own efforts. However\, fate repeatedly thwarts his aspirations\, and despite his hard work and determination\, his circumstances remain unchanged. In the context of modern society\, Xiangzi’s helplessness and confusion reflect the struggles of modern workers caught in similar cycles of hardship. \nLao She is widely celebrated as a “Master of Language”\, with his works both entertaining and deeply rooted in the local culture of Beijing. Rickshaw Boy is among Lao She’s most renowned masterpieces. It presents a tragic story laced with humour\, using Beijing dialect and expressions to vividly portray the resilience\, pride\, and underlying pain of his characters. Director Fang Xu\, often regarded as a “Lao She specialist\,” has adapted Lao She’s works for the stage numerous times with his distinctive expressive and interpretative style. In this production\, Fang Xu reimagines the original text through a contemporary lens\, incorporating modern aesthetics into the stage design\, lighting\, music\, and visual composition. \nWhile the tragic struggles of the rickshaw pullers portrayed in Rickshaw Boy may seem distant to contemporary audiences\, the story also offers a compelling psychological portrait of Xiangzi himself. It delves into the conflict between his ideals and the harsh realities\, alongside the confusion\, frustration\, and helplessness that permeate his inner world – emotions that remain profoundly relatable even today. \nAnother standout feature of this adaptation is its all-male cast\, which boldly challenges traditional gender roles while employing a non-linear\, visually-driven narrative structure to depict Xiangzi’s tragic journey. This innovative approach departs from a straightforward retelling\, offering a rich and layered interpretation. \nOne of the female characters\, Tigress\, is portrayed by Zhao Zhen\, a nationally acclaimed Chinese actor with extensive theatre experience\, who brings the role of to life with a commanding portrayal of her domineering and sharp-tongued personality. Another female character\, Xiao Fu Zi\, is portrayed by Ren Yubin\, who is trained in traditional opera Dan roles. He delivers a poignant performance\, capturing the character’s sorrow and timidity with nuance. Siqin Gaowa\, an actress renowned for her iconic portrayal of Tigress in the film adaptation of Rickshaw Boy (1982)\, serves as the artistic advisor for this production. \nThis marks the firs-ever staging of Rickshaw Boy in Singapore and Fang Xu’s debut at the Esplanade. We have all experienced how images and narratives go hand-in-hand to move our emotions. \nJoin writing and visual art powerhouse Tania De Rozario in this four-week series\, where she will introduce you to her favourite comics\, demonstrate how the craft of comics allows you to understand visual metaphors\, and explore tools used in visual storytelling to make introspective\, diaristic comics. \nEvery week\, we will share our writing and drawing with one another in a casual environment. You don’t need to be a professional artist or writer to participate! \n  \nSESSION OUTLINE \nAll sessions will be held from 10am – 12pm Singapore time (SGT) / 6pm – 8pm Vancouver time (PST). We will also look at examples of poetry comics and visual art (e.g. painting\, collage\, sculpture) that combine image\, text and material in ways that we can learn from. \n  \nABOUT TANIA DE ROZARIO \nTania De Rozario is a writer\, visual artist\, and the author of four books. Her latest collection\, Dinner on Monster Island (Harper Perennial 2024)\, has been described as “sharp and searing” (Ms. Magazine)\, “unique” (Publishers Weekly)\, “a book with resonance” (Kirkus Reviews)\, “elegant”\, “droll” and “magnetic” (British Columbia Review). Her writing has won the New Ohio Review Nonfiction Contest (2020) and the Muriel Craft Bailey Poetry Contest (2021)\, has been a finalist at the Lambda Literary Awards (2021) and has been published in journals/anthologies across four continents. Her art has been showcased in Singapore\, Europe\, and the US. \nTania has taught in various capacities for over two decades – this includes working as an adjunct at the University of British Columbia\, where she taught Writing for Graphic Forms for the Creative Writing Department (2021-2023)\, and across Visual Arts faculties at Lasalle College of the Arts (2006-2018). Co-produced with Siong Leng Musical Association\, The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun presents a musical experience of discovery\, courage and determination. \nThree women leave China and set sail for Southeast Asia in the early 20th century\, their voyage echoing the journey of Wang Zhaojun\, one of the legendary Four Beauties of ancient China. Finding themselves on a cargo ship\, they are inescapably embroiled in sinister struggles for power as a mysterious man reveals secrets they have yet to understand. What will their destinies hold? What connection exists between these three women braving a tumultuous sea and Wang Zhaojun\, who rode beyond the borders of Western Han into the Xiongnu empire? Do the fragments of loss and sorrow in Nanyin music symbolise the life stories of these modern women\, or do they inspire courage to explore new horizons? \n  \nThis fusion of traditional Nanyin music and contemporary theatre will delight both Nanyin purists and new audiences. Siong Leng breaks new ground in this collaboration with celebrated Taiwanese playwright Katherine Hui-ling Chou and Taiwanese director Lee Yi Hsiu\, who is known for his innovative direction of traditional music performances. \nThe Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun features authentic traditional Nanyin music harking back half a millennium that narrates the legend of Wang Zhaojun\, with additional music composed by Siong Leng’s music director Ng Kang Kee. The production showcases the principal artists of Siong Leng\, and a skilled ensemble of Eastern and Western classical musicians performing together with Singapore actors Ang Xiao Ting\, Jodi Chan and Hang Qian Chou.

The well-loved series has been enjoyed by over half a million Taiwanese theatregoers so far\, and Human Condition VIII is the latest eagerly anticipated instalment. \nHuman Condition VIII tells the story of Mingcan\, a retiree who finds himself adrift and without a purpose in life. His status as a respected patriarch has long disappeared as his adult children have their own families and lives to deal with. Unable to contribute to the economy and unneeded by his family\, Mingcan questions his self-worth as his dignity slowly fades with each listless\, monotonous day. Just as he feels that he has struck rock-bottom\, he instead strikes the lottery jackpot\, and immediately finds himself to be of interest to his family once more. Mingcan feels respected\, needed\, wanted. But is this unexpected windfall a stroke of luck or a harbinger of misfortune? \nStarting in 2000\, the Human Condition series shines an empathetic spotlight on the day-to-day stories of everyday Taiwanese people who strive to make the best out of what they have in their lives. Presented by Greenray Theatre Company\, the series has continued to garner enthusiastic support and enjoy great appeal since its inception. DESCRIPTION:To commemorate Singapore’s 60 years of nation building\, Singapore Mo Yuan Tang Collection is proud to present 2 breathtaking showcases\, SG60: The Timeless Lim Tze Peng and Modern Chinese Art Paintings in Singapore at ArtSpace@Helutrans from 23 February to 9 March 2025.\n\n\nSingapore Mo Yuan Tang (星洲墨缘堂)\, founded by Mr. Melvin Poh\, Founder and Managing Director of homegrown property developer of the Fission Group\, holds one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Lim Tze Peng’s work. This exhibition features over 80 paintings and calligraphy pieces by Lim spanning the period of 1960s to the present\, including recently completed works by the now 104-year-old artist. \nThrough this landmark exhibition\, Singapore Mo Yuan Tang aims to commemorate SG60 together with the public and recognise Lim’s contribution to the Singapore’s art scene since her post-independence years to the present. As highlighted by Mr. Poh: \n​ \n“Singapore’s transition to a modern economy did not wane Mr. Lim’s continued dedication to the arts. In fact\, it has strengthened his resolve to continue to innovate in his pursuit for breakthrough in his craft\, just like Singapore’s pursuit for excellence in our nation building journey. Mr. Lim’s artistry has left an indelible mark on Singapore’s cultural landscape as Singapore’s urban and economic transformation has on the world.” \n​ \nIn addition to SG60: The Timeless Lim Tze Peng\, Mr. Poh will showcase around 20 Chinese ink pieces drawn from his Singapore Mo Yuan Tang’s significant collection of Modern Chinese Art. The selection includes the works of renowned Chinese masters like Qi Baishi\, Fu Baoshi\, Wu Guanzhong\, Xie Zhiliu\, Zhang Daqian\, and Xu Beihong. In fact\, some of these Chinese artists were known to have frequented and contributed to the Singapore art scene in our early nation building years.
