Can we grow from a place of love and trust instead of shame and comparison? \nMeet Sheryl with an ‘S’. Sheryl lives in Singapore\, which also begins with an ‘S’. Life hasn’t been the smoothest for Sheryl\, like for us all. No problemo. \nFollow Sheryl on her quest to become as resilient and as versatile as Seaweed. SUMMARY:Urban Screens: Dancing Alone (Don’t Leave Me)
DESCRIPTION:A video art showcase by Susie Wong \n17 to 26 Jan 2025\nVenues: Digital billboard at Fortune Centre and Digital billboard at Wilkie Edge \nDancing Alone (Don’t Leave Me) is a series of onscreen vignettes of solitary women dancing by themselves\, for themselves. The work is inspired by a scene from the film\, The King and I\, where the female protagonist says\, “No woman would dance alone when a man is looking at her.” In Wong’s work\, the dancer is both the centre of attention and wholly indifferent; her occupation of the screen gives momentary respite and joy. \nYet her ability to escape the gaze of others is constrained by her own longing to be seen. Exaggerated by a highly visible medium\, these strange tensions speak of Wong’s long term preoccupation with romance and agency in relation to cinematic tropes\, and the complex negotiations that ensue. \nThis work is curated for Urban Screens\, which is presented by Objectifs as part of Singapore Art Week\, supported by the National Arts Council and Plan B Media. \nAbout Susie Wong \nSusie Wong is an artist\, curator\, educator and art writer in Singapore. She studied painting at the former LASALLE College of the Arts (St. Patrick’s Fine Arts) in the mid-1980s\, and pursued her Master of Fine Arts at LASALLE in 2007. She was artist-resident at NTU-CCA Singapore in 2018. Wong’s work ranges across landscapes\, still life\, portraiture\, a recurring subject in her early oil paintings and drawings. Since 1990s\, Wong has curated\, co-curated\, co-organised and/or participated in several solo and group exhibitions: Personae XX (1996\, Kandang Kerbau)\, HOPE: w.a.p. [women artists’ project] (2000\, Chijmes)\, The Machine Contemplating the Body (2014\, Singapore General Hospital) among others. More recently\, her work contemplates mass media and the circulation and consumption of images\, the mistrust of representation\, appropriating images or visual references for much of her work\, extending to romantic tropes in media. Her installation work with video/light projections includes Take Care of Me in the curated series\, Opening Day\, at the Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre in January 2018; and Dancing Alone\, at Objectifs\, 2020. \nShe was artist-in-residence at NTU CCA (Nanyang Technological University -Centre for Contemporary Art) from June to November 2018. \nWong has also written for numerous publications and monographs on art since the late 1980s. She is Assoc. Editor for ISSUE\, an annual LASALLE journal publication since 2013.

SUMMARY:Art Outreach Singapore
DESCRIPTION:Art Outreach Basecamp is a public symposium designed to complement the Art Outreach Summit 2025 by fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration within the arts community. Held during Singapore Art Week (SAW)\, Basecamp provides a platform for artists\, patrons\, and cultural stakeholders to engage in conversations that strengthen connections and explore the critical role of art in society. \nThe Art Outreach Basecamp is designed as the public-facing counterpart to the Art Outreach Summit\, complementing its mission by fostering inclusive dialogue and engagement during Singapore Art Week. While the Summit provides a professional development platform for emerging and mid-career practitioners\, the Basecamp serves as a starting point—much like its name suggests—for wider audiences to explore innovative ideas and collaborations in the arts. Together\, the Basecamp and Summit create a holistic programme aimed at strengthening Singapore’s position as a vibrant arts hub.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Commission Continua by Noma Mini
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \nCommission Continua is a powerful and affecting production. Miyambo succeeds in delivering a complex concept with care. \n— Nkgopoleng Moloi\, The Critter \nBright Maluleke—played by Tony Bonani Miyambo (Kafka’s Ape)—is an employee who copies and archives official documents from the commissions. He does his best just to stick to his brief and ignore the content of the files—but this proves difficult when faced with all these pages giving an account of the most critical and catastrophic moments in South Africa’s history. In the frugal setting of a photocopier\, a microphone\, and a loop station\, he begins to give vent to his annoyance with South African society’s struggle for real change and reconciliation. \nBonani Miyambo is terrific and deservedly gets one of the strongest ovations of the night \n— Teresa Guerreiro\, Culture Whisper \na devastating one-hander that emphasises how the culpability for historical and recent crimes perpetrated against the South African people has become buried under mountains of paperwork. \n— Chris Thurman\, Business Live \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 18 January 2025. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com by 6 December 2024.

SUMMARY:Storytelling Through Photography Course
DESCRIPTION:Photography has the power to capture moments in time\, document events\, and record our experiences. SUMMARY:TOOLS: A Workshop Series for Playwrights Exploring Theatricality - Stage Directions
DESCRIPTION:Tools is a workshop series by our visiting resident playwright Sean Dunnington for playwrights curious about theatricality—the unique magic of theatre that invites audiences to “believe” what they see on stage is true-to-life\, even while knowing it’s not real (to an extent). Each session dives into a specific element of this conceptual spell\, blending discussion\, hands-on activities\, performance\, and experimentation. \nJoin us for the first workshop this January which will look at Stage Directions. In this workshop\, we’ll explore what stage directions can do beyond blocking and lighting cues. How can they become indispensable to the play? Can they describe things that never appear? Should they be interpreted as literal\, tonal\, or something else entirely? Can they dare be ignored? Through examples and practice\, we’ll test how much stage directions can shape a play. \nThis workshop is suitable for playwrights/writers who are engaged with/thinking about craft at a serious level.

SUMMARY:Unison: A Carnatic Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Unison is an immersive concert that invites audiences to take a sonic journey through the heart of Carnatic music\, blending its ancient traditions with contemporary sensibilities. The performance celebrates the power of unity—not just in the perfect synchronisation of an ensemble\, but also in the collective energy that arises from the dynamic interplay between melody\, rhythm and improvisation. \nIn this bold exploration\, a collective of virtuoso musicians—ranging from vocalists and instrumentalists to percussionists—will embark on a shared musical adventure. The concert will unfold as a vivid tapestry\, where each piece offers something unique\, yet each element contributes to the larger whole. \nThe concert will also feature moments where elements of Carnatic music meet influences from global traditions\, highlighting the universal appeal of rhythm\, melody and improvisation. This performance will enchant with the powerful resonance between performer and audience\, and the shared musical language that transcends cultures and time. \nThis is Carnatic music as it has never been experienced before—innovative\, modern\, vibrant\, and above all\, in perfect Unison. \nMusicians: \nV Anirudh Athreya\nG Chandrasekara Sharma\nPraveen Sparsh\nS Sayee Rakshith

SUMMARY:Rickshaw Boy
DESCRIPTION:Rickshaw Boy narrates the life of Xiangzi\, a rickshaw puller in Beiping during the Republic of China era. A strong and ambitious young man from the countryside\, Xiangzi dreams of building an ideal life through his own efforts. However\, fate repeatedly thwarts his aspirations\, and despite his hard work and determination\, his circumstances remain unchanged. In the context of modern society\, Xiangzi’s helplessness and confusion reflect the struggles of modern workers caught in similar cycles of hardship. \nLao She is widely celebrated as a “Master of Language”\, with his works both entertaining and deeply rooted in the local culture of Beijing. Rickshaw Boy is among Lao She’s most renowned masterpieces. It presents a tragic story laced with humour\, using Beijing dialect and expressions to vividly portray the resilience\, pride\, and underlying pain of his characters. Director Fang Xu\, often regarded as a “Lao She specialist\,” has adapted Lao She’s works for the stage numerous times with his distinctive expressive and interpretative style. In this production\, Fang Xu reimagines the original text through a contemporary lens\, incorporating modern aesthetics into the stage design\, lighting\, music\, and visual composition. \nWhile the tragic struggles of the rickshaw pullers portrayed in Rickshaw Boy may seem distant to contemporary audiences\, the story also offers a compelling psychological portrait of Xiangzi himself. It delves into the conflict between his ideals and the harsh realities\, alongside the confusion\, frustration\, and helplessness that permeate his inner world – emotions that remain profoundly relatable even today. \nAnother standout feature of this adaptation is its all-male cast\, which boldly challenges traditional gender roles while employing a non-linear\, visually-driven narrative structure to depict Xiangzi’s tragic journey. This innovative approach departs from a straightforward retelling\, offering a rich and layered interpretation. \nOne of the female characters\, Tigress\, is portrayed by Zhao Zhen\, a nationally acclaimed Chinese actor with extensive theatre experience\, who brings the role of to life with a commanding portrayal of her domineering and sharp-tongued personality. Another female character\, Xiao Fu Zi\, is portrayed by Ren Yubin\, who is trained in traditional opera Dan roles. He delivers a poignant performance\, capturing the character’s sorrow and timidity with nuance. Siqin Gaowa\, an actress renowned for her iconic portrayal of Tigress in the film adaptation of Rickshaw Boy (1982)\, serves as the artistic advisor for this production. \nThis marks the firs-ever staging of Rickshaw Boy in Singapore and Fang Xu’s debut at the Esplanade. The critically acclaimed all-male cast\, which has captivated audiences in China\, will perform in this groundbreaking production\, making it a must-see event!

SUMMARY:From Person to Page: Expressing the Self in Comics with Tania De Rozario
DESCRIPTION:The glow in your chest when you find the perfect meme to explain the day you just had. The laughter that bubbles up when your friends share the same. We have all experienced how images and narratives go hand-in-hand to move our emotions. \nJoin writing and visual art powerhouse Tania De Rozario in this four-week series\, where she will introduce you to her favourite comics\, demonstrate how the craft of comics allows you to understand visual metaphors\, and explore tools used in visual storytelling to make introspective\, diaristic comics. \nEvery week\, we will share our writing and drawing with one another in a casual environment. You don’t need to be a professional artist or writer to participate! \n  \nSESSION OUTLINE \nAll sessions will be held from 10am – 12pm Singapore time (SGT) / 6pm – 8pm Vancouver time (PST). Please use a time zone converter to find the corresponding time in your location. \nWe will be drawing and writing during this workshop. Please come with blank paper\, a pen and a pencil. If possible\, it would be great if you have a phone or camera that allows you to upload photos of your drawings to the internet. \n  \nSession 1: Thinking About Storytelling\nSaturday\, 8 February 2025 (SGT) | Friday\, 7 February 2025 (PST)\nLet’s begin by looking at frameworks through which we can begin to analyse and appreciate comics storytelling. We will also look at grids and experiment with how they can be used as structural guides to help organise information\, create rhythm\, and/or provide points of focus. \nSession 2: Visual Metaphors & Mark-making\nSaturday\, 15 February 2025 (SGT) | Friday\, 14 February 2025 (PST)\nIn this session\, we will look at the use of imaginative imagery in comics\, with a focus on non-representational elements as well as metaphorical images. We will also experiment with developing our own visual metaphors through a drawing exercise that utilises free association. \nSession 3: Medium\, Method & Material\nSaturday\, 22 February 2025 (SGT) | Friday\, 21 February 2025 (PST)\nExplore how different mediums and materials can help us expand storytelling possibilities and widen our visual vocabularies\, freeing us up to discover new ways of working and new ways of taking pleasure in the work that we make. \nSession 4: Hybrid Comics & Experimental Comics\nSaturday\, 1 March 2025 (SGT) | Friday\, 28 February 2025 (PST)\nIn our final session\, we will look at how comics-makers are pushing boundaries in terms of story structure\, form\, material\, language\, and the comic book as an object itself. We will also look at examples of poetry comics and visual art (e.g. painting\, collage\, sculpture) that combine image\, text and material in ways that we can learn from. \n  \nABOUT TANIA DE ROZARIO \nTania De Rozario is a writer\, visual artist\, and the author of four books. SUMMARY:Ethos Nights: Faceri
DESCRIPTION:Faceri is a night of film and spoken word co-presented by the Asian Film Archive and Ethos Books. The second of the Ethos Nights series\, this event features three short films and four writers\, tracing the lines of making and unmaking evoked by the etymology of the word “fashion”\, from the old French “Façon\,” meaning “a making\, style\, appearance\, behavior”. Through material culture we style ourselves\, but also create a living nexus of identity that people can don. This in turn stems from Latin “faceri”: the act of doing\, making\, creating; the act of birth itself. Through the interweaving of film and spoken word\, Faceri will explore materiality\, identity\, and craft. \n📅 Date/Time: 8 Feb 2025\, 5.30pm\n📍Venue: Oldham Theatre \nProgramme: \n🎥 In Pursuit of Temples in the Sky (Gagandeep Singh\, 2021)\nWith live narration by Shawn Hoo \n🎥 A million Threads (Thu Thu Shein\, 2006)\nWith textual responses by Jennifer Anne Champion and Prasanthi Ram followed by an improvised poem co-created with the audience by Shivram Gopinath \n🎥 Roach Love (Jacen Tan\, 2022)\nWith an exquisite corpse \nThis event will feature Shawn Hoo\, Jennifer Anne Champion\, Prasanthi Ram and Shivram Gopinath.
