DESCRIPTION:Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) invites you to an evening dedicated to the art of Jingju and a dialogue of cultures. This event will feature a demonstration of techniques and selected excerpts from Jingju works presented by ITI students\, offering an exploration of this traditional theatre form. \nHighlighting the evening is an introduction by and Q&A with Mdm Li Qiu Ping\, the distinguished Stephen Riady Master Chair in Jingju\, who returns to teach this art form at ITI for the first time in six years. \nJingju is celebrated for its intricate combination of singing\, dialogue\, acting\, and acrobatics. Recognised on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, Jingju is one of the four Asian traditional forms that students at ITI study through nine-week intensive immersions as part of the intercultural training programme.

SUMMARY:Subconscious
DESCRIPTION:Subconscious is Betty Goh’s long term project about the introspective reflections of her soul and subconscious. \nGrowing up in the heart of Singapore\, the adrenaline rush and vibrancy of this busy city excites her. At the same time\, she feels an amount of unspoken loneliness\, tension and dilemma hidden beneath the surface. These overlapping and complex emotions are often expressed through Betty’s subconscious during her daily street walks and hence\, the result of her visual poetry. \nThrough her unique use of reflections\, shadows\, silhouettes\, long exposure\, lines\, shapes and spaces\, Betty captures the subtle psychological aspects of a busy urban street life. While her work exudes a sense of mystery\, imagination and surrealism\, all her street work is un-posed and un-staged\, captured within a single exposure\, and with zero or minimal edits. Majority of the photos in this exhibition were shot on the streets of Singapore and some were captured in Tokyo. As a keen Leica camera user\, Betty has been using the Leica Q2 and Leica Q3 cameras to capture her work. \nCome visit this exhibition to celebrate Betty’s passion for abstract street photography. \nThis exhibition is supported by Objectifs Centre for Photography & Film and Leica Singapore.

DESCRIPTION:12th September 2024\, 8 pm\nEsplanade Recital Studio \nDive into a visual and musical odyssey as the magic of five rivers unfolds\, revealing the evolution of life through mesmerising original compositions by prolific composers Avik Chari\, Chok Kerong\, Dr. John Sharpley\, Eric Watson\, and Gu Wei. These five original compositions will be performed by the NP Collective\, an ensemble managed by Brahmastra Arts House. The concert will also feature Sarfaraaz Khan\, one of the leading exponents of the Sarangi\, as a soloist. \nThis concert bridges Indian classical and folk musicians with Western classical music composers\, creating a harmonious blend of both worlds. The fusion of diverse musical traditions highlights the universality of music\, bringing together the unique sounds and rhythms of Indian and Western classical traditions in a unified\, transcendent performance. \nThe concert is supported by the START and Sands Innovation Fund – National Arts Council (Singapore) with venue partnership by Esplanade Co. \nThe concert is directed by Gildon Choo and artistically directed by multi-award-winning composer and accomplished flautist\, Niranjan Pandian. SUMMARY:Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine)
DESCRIPTION:Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine) is an immersive and interactive experience combining poetry\, sound\, and light. Part of “Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Interplay” and Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary celebrations\, this event celebrates the rich histories and communities of Waterloo Street. \nWaterloo Street represents Singapore’s diverse heritage\, and Cor Machina explores the connections between communities and the arts\, symbolised by the typewriter as a relic with the poet as its beating heart. The typewriter’s mechanical clatter echoes modern life’s relentless grind\, yet within this noise\, there is beauty—a reminder that even in the machine\, the human heart creates with hope. \nCor Machina captures this playfully\, by inviting participants to explore these themes through creation. Audiences first enter an installation of pre-made prompts that draws from personal\, communal memories and stories of the street. They’re invited to send in an order for a poem to the Proletariat Poetry Factory\, which becomes a meta memory machine. Poets\, musicians\, and artists create new memories and stories from their inputs\, blending them with the street’s past. \nThe work evokes collective remembrance and celebrates the street’s heritage in a contemporary context. The intent is to spark meaningful conversations\, weaving together past and present\, individual and collective experience. This performance is also in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, serving to commemorate our placemaking and memory making on Waterloo Street.

Written by Joe Hasham OAM and directed by Dato’ Dr Faridah Merican\, The Sisters Soong is a brand-new play that relates the story of the famous and somewhat infamous sisters; three of the most influential siblings of 20th century China. \nBorn in China and educated in America\, “Big Sister” Ai-ling married banker H.H. Kung\, who later became Finance Minister\, “Red Sister” Ching-ling married the Father of Modern China\, Sun Yat-sen\, and “Little Sister” Mei-ling married Chiang Kai-shek. \nIn this modern retelling that alternates between fact and fiction\, the playwright has taken some artistic license and cleverly woven this family saga that spans a century with the help of a narrator. \nThe Sisters Soong will be brought to life by an award-winning cast with choreography by Kenny Shim\, costuming by Beatrice Looi\, music and arrangement by Tan Zhi Yong against a set by Scenographer Yusman Mokhtar and live music under the baton of Maestro Lee Kok Leong. \nAbout TAS Seni Teater Rakyat\nSince its inception in 1989\, The Actors Studio has been presenting groundbreaking theatre in Malaysia. This three-week long mentorship programme encourages them to explore and experiment with image-based work\, and deepen their understanding of the creative and professional possibilities in photography. This exploration of the concept of play and childhood is inspired by the historical significance of the precinct as the birthplace of some of Singapore’s first schools. \nDiscover the unique stories and traditions of the precinct through the festival’s signature projection mapping artworks night light installations by local and regional artists alongside a series of exciting programmes food and retail experiences across numerous Festival Villages and performances including jazz performances and a xinyao singalong — another festival first! \nTake a step back in time with this year’s Highlight Act titled Wonder World and bask in the old-school and retro vibes of Singapore from the 1950s to 1970s. Contemporary Preschool programme\, presented by Singapore Art Museum (SAM) in partnership with eight preschools across Singapore. As part of the programme\, young children learn about the world around them through contemporary art. To develop Hello Future\, children were introduced to artworks and exhibitions at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, such as Black Forest by Cultural Medallion recipient Han Sai Por and Olafur Eliasson: Your curious journey. The artworks show the impact of humans on the environment as well as the importance of living sustainably. With guidance from their teachers\, they learnt how global warming has a cascading effect on our ecosystems and why they must protect the environment. \nWorking with their friends\, families and teachers\, the children used newly acquired techniques to transform found materials into artworks and stories that convey their hopes for the future. \nAs you explore this Wonderland created by children\, uncover their whimsical ideas for building a sustainable Singapore!
