SUMMARY:Kannama: Beyond the Lines and Rhymes
DESCRIPTION:Kannama: Beyond Lines and Rhymes is a musical homage to the legendary Indian poet and writer Bharatiyar\, featuring the premiere of five original orchestral pieces inspired by his works on love\, politics\, and revolution. These compositions are woven together through an engaging radio show narrative\, hosted by emcee Jing Yi How. \nThe concert also marks the debut of Singapore’s first-ever Indian contemporary fusion ensemble\, the Singahanagara Orchestra\, blending Indian classical and folk instrumentalists with a dynamic chorale section. \nLed by the artistic vision and direction of award-winning flautist Niranjan Pandian\, and under the show direction of Gildon Choo\, this performance offers a fresh and innovative interpretation of Bharatiyar’s timeless legacy. Supported by the National Arts Council (Singapore) and the Tamil Language Learning and Promotion Committee\, this historic concert is presented by Brahmastra Arts House. \nTickets can be found at the following link: https://peatix.com/event/4169173

SUMMARY:The Gaze of TIme: Photographs by Hor Kwok Kin
DESCRIPTION:artcommune gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of Singapore photographer\, Hor Kwok Kin (b. 1939\, Ipoh). On view from 3 to 18 December\, The Gaze of Time features a selection of 25 colour and 15 black-and-white photographic works dating from the early 1960s to the 2000s. The exhibition officially opens on 7 December\, Saturday\, 3-4.30pm with the artist in attendance. All Are welcome! \n \nHor Kwok Kin’s style can be classified alongside the works of other modernist photographers\, such as his friend and mentor\, Yip Cheong Fun. The thoughtful use of geometric elements in his compositions particularly recalls the latter’s influence. More significantly\, his black-and-white photographs were captured and developed personally using darkroom techniques in the period of 1960s-80s. Heavily influenced by humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson’s pioneering street photography\, he captured scenes of everyday Singapore with a strikingly modernist composition. \n \nAs the period of Hor Kwok Kin’s photographic practice coincided with the transition of a post-independent Singapore\, he managed to archive in the process a variety of environments\, professions and social activities that once characterised life in Old Singapore. His identity as a working-class photographer also allowed him to effectively immortalise moments that proved intensely empathetic to his subjects\, like the quayside labourers or the worker at a quarry\, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries. \n \nHor Kwok Kin began to explore colour photography in the 1990s\, retaining his focus on portraying the lived lives and everyday interactions of local communities. In this later period\, he also delved into a close-up examination on the social-emotional life of animals\, such as the portrait of a growing Inuka – the first polar bear born and housed at the Singapore Zoo in the 90s.

SUMMARY:Pratchaya Phinthong: No Patents on Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum presents Pratchaya Phinthong: No Patents on Ideas\, the first solo exhibition of Bangkok-based artist Pratchaya Phinthong in Singapore. The exhibition delves into ideas of self-determination and objects as avatars of chance. Drawing inspiration from his time in Singapore\, it offers a comprehensive look at significant explorations foundational to Phinthong’s two-decade multidisciplinary practice\, reflecting his ways of conceptual thinking that translate research\, scientific discoveries\, economic theories\, and even rumours into experiential forms and gestures.  \nPhinthong’s works represent a crucial facet of Thai contemporary art\, rooted in collaboration\, exchange\, and the transference of artistic agency—reshaping the value and meaning of art. His practice often evokes open-ended situations that invite viewers to engage\, fill in the gaps with their own perceptions and explore multiple narratives. By engaging with issues of global exchange\, economic models and value systems\, Pratchaya Phinthong: No Patents on Ideas challenges our conventional understandings of the world and offers a thought-provoking perspective on contemporary concerns through the lens of Phinthong’s conceptual practice.

SUMMARY:Yee I-Lann: Mansau-Ansau
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum presents Yee I-Lann: Mansau-Ansau\, a solo mid-career exhibition showcasing recent and seminal works by Malaysian contemporary artist Yee I-Lann\, providing a refreshing and critical perspective from her home in Sabah. The exhibition titled Mansau-Ansau (referring in the Dusun and Kadazan language to a wandering without expectation and thus embracing curiosity) attends to Yee’s journey of discovery and creation over two decades\, navigating domains of knowledge\, old and new\, and reimagining the forms and dynamics of power. \nThe exhibition spans a range of media\, including photo collage\, silk\, batik\, bamboo pus\, and pandanus. Yee closely collaborates with sea- and land-based communities and indigenous mediums in Sabah\, Malaysia\, weaving thoughtfully presented narratives and cultural bridges through art. Visitors are invited to encounter a horizon that teases\, where the kerbau (buffalos) stand their ground and mats ‘eat’ tables\, experience karaoke beyond language\, and meet turtles as they return home. Yee I-Lann: Mansau-Ansau spotlights Yee’s critical practice\, which serves as a poignant reminder for reorientation\, attending to the moment with curiosity\, and embracing one’s path and rhythm.

SUMMARY:Plan 75 x ArtsWok Collaborative Fundraiser Screening
DESCRIPTION:This December\, the award-winning Japanese film Plan 75 is back on the big screen for a limited run since its release in 2022. Hailed for its sensitivity and haunting premise\, the film provides a lens to examine the place of seniors in a rapidly ageing society. Plan 75 will be accompanied by the touching short film Float Free (2024)\, where a trio of senior women find joy and a new lease of life from learning to swim at Yishun Swimming Complex. Both films offer an incisive and moving portrait of ageing\, community\, and the value of human connection. This unique pairing is brought together by non-profit arts organisation ArtsWok Collaborative in partnership with indie cinema The Projector.  \n  \nPlan 75 \nDirected by Chie Hayakawa \nIn Japanese with English subtitles \nRated NC16 \n  \nSet in a parallel dystopian Japan\, Plan 75 explores the introduction of a radical nationwide programme for voluntary euthanasia to deal with a super-aged society and the larger psychological repercussions that come with it. The film is a contemplative response to loneliness\, human dignity\, and what it really means to live. \n  \nFloat Free  \nCo-created by Chia Yim Fong\, Koh Tong Cheng\, and Michelle Sim with Salty Xi Jie Ng \nIn Mandarin with English and Mandarin subtitles \nRated G \n  \nFloat Free follows three seniors who overcome their fear of water to learn swimming at an older age. In the process\, they discover a shared community\, the freedom water provides in old age\, and reflections on life and death. The short film was collaboratively scripted by senior collaborators and the lead artist of a recent project under ArtsWok Collaborative’s flagship programme Both Sides\, Now.  \n  \nMembers of the public will have a chance to catch Plan 75 and Float Free in the cinema on 7 and 15 December only at The Projector at Cineleisure. Tickets will be available from 15 November 2024. The Projector will be donating a portion of ticket sales from both screenings to ArtsWok Collaborative in support of the work they do in engaging and developing communities. SUMMARY:Lecture & Screening: Unearthing the "Blue Frontier": The International Seabed Authority's New Mining Code and the Costs of Deep-Sea Mining
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, deep-sea minerals like polymetallic nodules containing copper and cobalt have gained attention as a potential resource for green energy technologies such as batteries\, computers\, and electric cars. Found mainly on the international seabed (as well as within territorial waters)\, these nodules are regulated by the International Seabed Authority (ISA)\, which will finalize a mining code in 2025 that determines future deep-sea exploration and exploitation. Following Singapore’s Deep-Sea Mining Act of 2015\, Ocean Mineral Singapore\, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore and Marine conducted two deep-sea expeditions to the Pacific Ocean. While some argue this extraction is crucial for the green transition\, Pacific nations warn of its harmful impact on marine biodiversity and climate change. This lecture will explore the environmental and societal implications of deep-sea mining\, starting with a screening of the film Blue Peril\, 2022 (INTERPRT / Professor Nabil Ahmed\, Deep Sea Mining Campaign & Ozeanien-Dialog)\, a science-based visual investigation using architectural and spatial analysis to model the potentially irreversible effects of deep-sea mining in the Pacific Ocean. Paired with testimonies from Pacific Island communities\, this film addresses the impacts on their economies and ways of life. Following this\, Tara Maria Davenport (Assistant Professor\, Faculty of Law\, National University of Singapore and Deputy Director\, Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law) and Jonathan Galka (PhD Candidate\, History of Science Department\, Harvard University) will discuss the historic mining code and its future impact on resource extraction\, drawing from legal\, historical\, and community perspectives. \n🔗 Register here \n⏰ Tuesday\, 10 December 2024\, 6:30 – 8:00 pm\n📍 The Hall\, NTU CCA Singapore\nBlock 6 Lock Road\n#01-09 Gillman Barracks\nS108934 \n🖼️ Model of the seabed plume in the Nauru NORI D licence area using Open Drift. SUMMARY:METAL MACHINE MISCHIEF (or how to make noise music with bicycles) by bani haykal
DESCRIPTION:“Riding bikes ain’t s#!+ without climate justice\, without land back\, without liberation of everybody.” Christina Torres\, Cyclista Zine \nThe bicycle is more than just a means of transportation. In our increasingly car-centric and carbon-heavy lifestyle\, cycling is a climate action that slows down the rate at which our planet is burning. Inspiring stories from Gaza have shown us how bicycles can be radically repurposed into washing machines\, sewing machines\, and even power generators. \nIn the first part of the workshop\, participants will be offered a set of unused bicycle components and they will be guided to devise and conceptualise new musical or sonic instruments with them. In the second part\, these unorthodox instruments will be played in a group jam session! \nParticipants are encouraged to bring personal items such as mallets\, drumsticks\, clarinet mouthpieces\, and/or any musical bobs and bits they can incorporate into the instruments. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. Techno Diversions. \nNo prior knowledge or experience is required. \nLimited slots only! Register here.\nThis workshop is free for all participants. A refundable deposit of SGD 10 is requested to book a slot. The deposit will be returned upon attendance of the event. There will be no refund in case of no-show. \nIf you have questions\, email ntuccacomms@ntu.edu.sg

SUMMARY:Tayog-Tayog: The Ilonggo Imagination
DESCRIPTION:“Tayog-Tayog: The Ilonggo Imagination” presents a confluence of personal experiences\, historical narratives\, and indigenous cultural practices\, all intertwined with the fantastical elements of folklore and mythology that dwell within our collective psyche.\n\n\n\nThe Hiligaynon word “tayog” means “to fly off far.” Colloquially\, the expression “tayog-tayog” refers to an “out-of-this-world” idea. This is the starting point for the exhibition\, a launchpad for the lofty heights that the stories from Iloilo have reached—the Panay Sugidanun\, local folklore\, creatures like aswang\, tayho\, and kataw\, and even the narratives of a family history passed down through generations. These stories play a crucial role in retelling our realities and contribute to our collective memory.\n\n\n\nParticipating artists bring forth figments of their imaginations\, breathing life into the enigmatic and the uncanny. “Tayog-Tayog” is an homage to the surrealist tradition\, reimagined through the lens of contemporary and regional sensibilities. The featured works aim to use art to challenge the boundaries between reality and fantasy\, the past and the present\, the tangible and the ephemeral.

SUMMARY:Robert Zhao Renhui: 5 Albizias
DESCRIPTION:Step into the shade of the Albizia tree (Albizia moluccana)\, a resilient migrant tree species that has quietly spread and flourished in rewilding green spaces across Singapore’s landscape\, forming isolated islands amid Singapore’s urban concrete jungle. 5 Albizias\, a travelling showcase by artist Robert Zhao Renhui\, explores the history of the Albizia tree in Singapore\, tracing its origins to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia\, where the fast-growing species often populates areas marked by human intervention and natural disturbances.  \nThrough striking visuals of five Albizias—four from across Singapore in Tampines\, Punggol\, Jurong\, and Woodlands\, corresponding to the showcase venues—and one from the Maluku Islands\, 5 Albizias invites visitors to examine the impact human actions have on these spaces and the dynamic interplay between native and non-native\, natural and artificial. By spotlighting the resilience of these often-overlooked trees\, the exhibition brings to the fore their essential role in rewilding disturbed land\, creating pockets of green where life can thrive anew. \nPresented by Singapore Art Museum\, 5 Albizias takes Zhao’s explorations of the Albizia tree into the heartlands. Beginning at Punggol Regional Library\, the showcase will travel to the following locations from 18 December 2024 to 29 June 2025:  \n\nPunggol Regional Library: 18 December 2024 – 2 February 2025\nWoodlands Regional Library: 5 February 2025 – 23 March 2025\nJurong Regional Library: 26 March 2025 – 11 May 2025\nTampines Regional Library: 14 May 2025 – 29 June 2025

SUMMARY:Natural Radio Workshop led by artist Ong Kian Peng
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce participants to natural radio. Natural radio is the emission of Very Low Frequency (VLF) and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radio waves due to electromagnetic energy from natural phenomena. These emissions originate terrestrially from lightning and from the Sun’s interactions with the Earth’s magnetosphere\, they are among the inaudible voices of the environment. If the low frequencies of these electromagnetic outbursts are transformed into acoustic waves\, many of these signals may fall within the range of human hearing. Experiencing electromagnetic waves as acoustic waves will allow listeners to connect with the beauty and complexity of natural radio waves in a unique aural experience. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to assemble an analogue handheld radio device that tunes in to natural radio frequencies. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own headphones with a 3.5mm audio jack\, along with an optional audio recorder to capture and share their auditory discoveries. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. Techno Diversions. \nNo prior knowledge of electronics is required.

SUMMARY:comma 2025: PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:comma\, indicating an unfinished sentence\, reflects the fluidity of the arts and never-ending pursuit for excellence among Singapore’s young creatives. \n \nFrom 31 December 2024 to 26 January 2025\, comma is a Creative Arts festival that celebrates emerging artists while bringing the spotlight to Singapore’s budding creative scene at the Somerset Belt.  \nThe equation “PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE” invites contemplation on how the echoes of the past resonate in the present\, shaping the trajectory of what is yet to come.    \nThis theme invites artists to delve into this interconnectedness by unearthing forgotten narratives\, evolving perspectives and envisioning the influence of the past and present on our future. Drawing inspiration from tradition\, heritage and ritualism\, artists are encouraged to experiment with new techniques and unconventional themes and materials\, creating works that not only mirror our current reality but also provide glimpses into the trajectory of where we are headed.    \nAudiences will experience works that pay homage to our roots while offering fresh and contemporary interpretations\, weaving together the threads of past\, present\, and future.

SUMMARY:Of Dreams and Contemplation: I am All but a Story – Selections from the Collection of Richard Koh
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Singapore Art Week 2025\, The Private Museum is proud to present Of Dreams and Contemplation: I am All but a Story – Selections from the Collection of Richard Koh. This exhibition marks the second showcase of Richard Koh’s evolving journey as a collector and gallerist\, showcasing over 50 works from his personal collection. \n  \nBuilding upon the narrative of the first instalment in 2019—held at the museum’s former home at 51 Waterloo Street—the second instalment expands the scope of Koh’s deeply personal collection. The first showcase offered an intimate glimpse into Koh’s collection—emphasising monochromatic\, abstract\, and landscape works that reflected quiet introspection. Now\, Of Dreams and Contemplation: I am All but a Story continues to unfold a collection rich in personal meaning—presenting works that trace Koh’s decades-long interactions with art and the artists he admires. \n  \nCollected with a focus on memory and emotion\, Koh’s private collection spans Southeast Asia and beyond\, blending local\, regional\, and global perspectives. This exhibition deepens the dialogue between art and life\, revealing Koh’s ongoing exploration of what he calls a “visual diary”—works that evoke deeply personal moments and emotions. This new selection of works reflects an evolving journey that continues to resonate with new meanings in The Private Museum’s expansive space at the Osborne House. \n  \nAs both a collector and the founder of Richard Koh Fine Art\, Richard Koh has played a pivotal role in shaping and contributing towards the art ecology in Southeast Asia. This collaboration with Richard Koh underscores the collective effort and dedication towards fostering meaningful exchanges between artists\, collectors\, the arts communities\, and audiences from all walks of life. \nKickstarting the Museum’s 2025 programme\, Of Dreams and Contemplation: I am All but a Story invites all to explore the richness of art and discover how collections can tell deeply personal stories. As Richard Koh aptly states\, “Art\, in any collection\, should have its own story\,” inspiring audiences to embark on their own journey of collecting and storytelling through art.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Dancing with the Ghost of My Child by Noor Effendy Ibrahim\, Ruby Jayaseelan & NAFA
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \na unique approach\, rather bold and different \n—Natya Vichara on Purushi by Ruby Jayaseelan \nI know [Effendy’s work] will express a kind of pain and anger acceptable in the performance space\, a pain and anger that is often delegitimised or minimised or considered “inappropriate” elsewhere—and I cherish his work for that reason. \n—Corrie Tan\, Jom Media on ANAK by Very Shy Gurl by fendy \nI myself am an absolute abyss. \n—Antonin Artaud \nIn the beginning\, God created despair\, for men to find hope within. Someone heard someone else say this somewhere before\, sometime back. But no one knows who\, when and where. It must have been God herself who had said this through some men. Only God could be that smart to tease men into such futility. And here\, men find themselves being baited into their own despair. \nConceptualised and directed by Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Ruby Jayaseelan\, Dancing with the Ghost of My Child is an experimental physical theatre performance written by Elvira Foo Jing  Yun\, Gregory Kong Ka-Ee\, Lex (Lee Zhi Qi)\, and Liu Qintong (Amelia) exploring vulnerability\, trauma and the desire to heal. It is devised by students from the BA (Honours) in Performance Making programme at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \nCo-presented with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (a founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore). \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 10 January 2025. SUMMARY:Singkarpor REMIXED
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on this Singaporean extensive archive\, Singkarpor REMIXED is an immersive art installation.
