SUMMARY:2024 Asian Art Biennial Announces the Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:Organised by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA)\, the Asian Art Biennial has opened on 16 November 2024 and will be on display until 2 March 2025. Co-curated by Fang Yen Hsiang (Taiwan)\, Anne Davidian (Armenia)\, Merv Espina (the Philippines)\, Haeju Kim (South Korea)\, and Asli Seven (Turkey)\, the Biennial will feature works from 35 local and international artists under the title of “How to Hold Your Breath”\, inviting viewers to take a deep breath and hold their breath while imagining a new future.\nThe title of the 2024 Asian Art Biennial\, “How to Hold Your Breath\,” evokes the act of voluntarily pausing a vital function\, creating a state of anticipation. A twist on the saying “don’t hold your breath\,” a warning not to expect change soon\, is inverted here to suggest latent hope.\nTaking a deep breath and holding it anchors us in the present moment. As the world unravels into new sublevels of rock bottom\, we continue to migrate and navigate through the din and dust\, between place and displacement in this late capitalist fallout. This act of calming the breath and setting the mind prepares for transitioning from one reality to another\, in a movement of transformation. It is an interval\, to listen to the inaudible and retune with the metabolic rhythms of our bodies and the planet.\nThrough a variety of media\, the artworks presented in the Biennial challenge progressive and universal notions of time\, revealing instead how histories are tied to people\, places\, and positions.\nMarwa Arsanios\, an artist and researcher based between Beirut and Berlin\, introduces a new chapter of her multifaceted project Who is Afraid of Ideology\, examining entrenched ownership ideologies and proposing non-expropriative practices related to natural resources\, agriculture\, housing\, and knowledge. For the Taiwan edition\, the project collaborates with curator Tsai Ming-Jiun\, artists and writers Wu Ke-Wei and Tsai Yu-Jou (Kuanntian Studio)\, and farmers from Tainan to convene reading sessions and a public conversation during the Biennial’s opening. This program invites audiences to dismantle possessive imaginaries and explore alternative ways of living harmoniously with nature. The exhibition features a film documenting the transformation of private land in Lebanon into common plot\, alongside textiles and drawings\, connecting these struggles to a broader historical perspective. Displayed in Taichung as city banners\, the Chart for the Usership of the Land\, offers a poetic protocol for new forms of communal property.\nYoshinori Niwa’s practice intervenes in public spaces to unravel societal conditions and create new horizons by pushing economic and ideological systems to absurdity. Among artist’s earlier works\, two new commissions have been produced in Taichung specifically for the Biennial. In Purchasing a Rice Ball at Convenience Stores for 24 Hours\, Niwa repeatedly buys the same rice ball he already owns\, questioning ideas of ownership and wealth. Requesting People in Taiwan Who I Met by Chance to Declare if They Die\, Taiwan Will Disappear revisits a past project where individuals proclaimed identification with their nation. Niwa revives this in Taichung\, questioning whether a country is defined by its people or geopolitical status.\nThe Unseen Presence is a recent series by Milay Mavaliw\, conveyed through woven installations that explore the connections between family and tribe\, transcending time and space. Inspired by the ritual blessings and prayers her Puyuma shaman grandmother performed before Milay embarked on her journeys\, these became a spiritual force that accompanies her\, anchoring her to her tribe. In her works\, organic lines and forms interweave and propagate throughout the space as a manifestation of energy. Viewers are invited to immerse themselves in the present moment\, in a space where collective forces are summoned.\nHwayeon Nam’s film 2 loosely follows the traces of two women\, Choi Seung-Hee (1911–1969) and Tsai Jui-Yueh (1921–2005)\, two pioneers of modern dance in Korea and Taiwan\, respectively. Beyond their artistic achievements\, the lives of these two women\, separated by a decade\, also reflect the trajectory of modern and contemporary Asian history\, marked by colonialism and Cold War ideology. In this film\, two narrators\, two historical figures\, two actors\, two cities\, and two houses are arranged in a disjointed yet interconnected manner.\nIn 2019\, Julia Sariesetiati and her collaborators proposed a platform named “PulangPergi”\, designed to share experiences between migrant workers. East Java is a major source of migrant workers in sectors like childcare\, elder care\, and domestic assistance. During her visit to PERTAKINA Indonesia\, Julia also visited Tulungagung and Kediri\, collaborating with former migrant workers to document everyday vocabulary and instructions used in their jobs. This documentation aims to bridge the gap between pre-departure language training and real-world work experience.\nWorking across diverse media—including large fabric paintings\, cartoon drawings\, and animations—Woosung Lee captures memories both distant and intimate. This exhibition presents a blend of earlier works alongside new paintings created after his 2024 visit to Taiwan. It features scenes and figures from Korean cities like Seoul and Gwangju\, alongside observations from Taipei and Taichung. By spotlighting individual characters and simultaneously emphasizing collective solidarity\, Lee emphasizes both personal identity and communal strength.\nThe Biennial will launch a series of public programs starting from its opening on 16 November\, including artist talks\, collective conversations\, experimental performances\, participation workshops\, guided tours\, screening programs.\nThe first exciting event will be Andrius Arutiunian’s Armen\, a speculative investigation of diasporic histories drawing from the artist’s collection of Armenian music. Reminiscent of Yerevan taxis blasting local pop\, it is published on an audio cassette and experienced during car rides in Taichung throughout the Biennial’s opening day.\nSharon Chin will present a participatory performance Portal on the opening night. This performance invites audiences to light oil lamps made from alcohol bottles discarded on an eroded beach in the artist’s town. Originally conceived as a celebration of two mangrove trees growing on the beach\, it is now a memorial\, as the trees were uprooted due to extreme weather just a few months before. We face transformations – ecological\, social\, political – on an unprecedented\, species-level scale. This work invokes the spirit of a place for insight on the inner transformations required for us to collectively weather this change.\n“How Breath Moves\,” the screening program of the 2024 Asian Art Biennial\, imagines breath as a collective cinematic device\, a shared source of life and rhythm\, moving across our bodies to technologies of light and projection\, through life\, death\, and rebirth\, to explore the production\, translation\, and circulation of images\, sounds\, memory\, and collective storytelling. Through a range of artistic strategies – including documentary essay\, performance video\, and animation – the eight films in this program provide critical historical contexts that enrich understanding of the exhibition’s core concerns. Pallavi Paul’s How Love Moves unpacks the intimate connection between breath\, soil\, and the hope and sorrow embodied in a gravekeeper’s daily life in India. SUMMARY:Open Call for Shorts - RawGround 25/26
DESCRIPTION:In our 6th edition\, RAW Moves is pleased to open our annual call for local and international artists to submit proposals for the next edition of RawGround (RG) 2025/26\, which will be running in February 2026*. \nPresented by RAW Moves in Singapore\, RawGround is designed to present a curated mini film showcase that fosters dialogue and broadens our perception of social norms. The short films\, created by artists and practitioners from various disciplines\, each reframe the aesthetics of the everyday through the lens of the individual. We welcome unorthodox\, conceptual works of narratives that redefine movement. \nApplicants are invited to conceptualise and create two new original short films~\, responding to this edition’s theme of “(Un)finished Work: In pursuit of the work of pretending”. \n\nThe Theme \nThe first of RAW Moves’ three-year exploration of “(Un)finished Work: In pursuit of ______” themes\, we delve into the paradigm of “pretending”: \n\n\n\n\nIn the work of “pretending”\, we explore the labour of balancing appearances and reality. As we externalise the self to connect with others\, we find these efforts can come at costs to ourselves. Going inward\, what are the personas we believe we need to uphold? Going forward\, what do we now shed – or shield – of ourselves? \n\n\n\n\nThe Process \nSelected artist-collaborators will be offered artist fees from RAW Moves for the conceptualisation and creation of the two films\, each ranging between 5 to 10 minute duration. In the staggered ten weeks creative process (From April 2025)\, each artist will be collaborating and supported by our Artistic Director and Resident Dramaturg to deliver two films. In addition to financial support\, appointed artist-collaborators will be able to develop their portfolio\, articulate ideas and enrich their creative processes through engaging diverse perspectives. This cultural exchange opportunity also offers visibility and chances to connect and interact with arts professionals and audiences from around the world. \n\n\n\n\nThe Presentation (3-days) \n\nFilm Screening Premiere\, Singapore\nThe final vignette of films will be launched at a physical screening session in Singapore^ in February 2026*\, which will include post-show dialogues at the end of the screening.\nArtists-led Workshops\, Singapore\nEach artist is required to host a 15 to 20 pax in-person workshop (1 – 1.5hour) that will engage the local arts community as an extension of their films’ narrative and concept. The extended events also offer networking opportunities with fellow artist-collaborators and local audiences. SUMMARY:Amazônia
DESCRIPTION:Amazônia is a major exhibition by the award-winning photographer Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944\, Brazil). It spotlights the Amazon region and its ecosystems coming under the threat of deforestation and climate change\, while featuring the voices\, portraits\, and perspectives of the Indigenous communities who live in – and with – the largest rainforest on the planet. \nThis multisensory and immersive exhibition\, curated and designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado\, comprises over 200 photographs\, a soundtrack by Jean-Michel Jarre\, two projection rooms\, video testimonies from Indigenous leaders\, tactile image plates for the visually impaired\, and a space dedicated to Instituto Terra\, the reforestation non-governmental organisation founded by the Salgados. This is the second time the artist has returned to Singapore to hold a solo exhibition\, since he left Singapore 24 years ago. Surrounding his iconic “Well M Farmland” series of paintings\, the exhibition strives to share fascinating stories from nearly half a century of his colourful and creative artistic practice. \nThe exhibition comprises selected highlights from his career\, providing an overview of his artistic practice spanning nearly half a century. From the earliest work created in the late 1970s\, to his subsequent revisiting of his “Abstract Landscape” series\, the exhibited works are threaded through “Well M Farmland – Square Puzzle”\, a landmark work created in Singapore during the Covid-19 years that depicts a fascinating narrative of Li’s personal reflection towards the pandemic. The gallery is pleased to reintroduce this globetrotting artist to the public eye through this exhibition\, giving local audiences the opportunity to have a glimpse into his illustrious journey.

Formerly known as Tiger Balm Gardens\, Haw Par Villa is a unique and underrated Asian cultural park\, housing over 1000 statues and 150 giant dioramas. Join us for this photo walk where you will learn more about the techniques of taking photographs using your camera’s in-built flash. Participants are to bring their own cameras that they are comfortable using; smartphones are suitable as well. \nPlease register via the form on our website. \nThe class will meet at the entrance of Haw Par Villa (exact meeting point to be confirmed via email prior to the walk)\, for a guided shoot focused on the following: \n• Landscape photography and portraits taken during the ‘golden hour’\n• Compositional techniques and tips\n• How to make use of flash to evenly light up your subject in dimmer areas\n• Learn more about the history of the park\, as well as the Chinese legends and religious mythology\n• Review of images in group sharing session \nThe workshop will also dismiss from Haw Par Villa. \nRequirements\nParticipants are to bring their own cameras that they are comfortable with for this workshop. SUMMARY:The Gaze of TIme: Photographs by Hor Kwok Kin
DESCRIPTION:artcommune gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of Singapore photographer\, Hor Kwok Kin (b. 1939\, Ipoh). On view from 3 to 18 December\, The Gaze of Time features a selection of 25 colour and 15 black-and-white photographic works dating from the early 1960s to the 2000s. The exhibition officially opens on 7 December\, Saturday\, 3-4.30pm with the artist in attendance. All Are welcome! \n​ \nHor Kwok Kin’s style can be classified alongside the works of other modernist photographers\, such as his friend and mentor\, Yip Cheong Fun. The thoughtful use of geometric elements in his compositions particularly recalls the latter’s influence. More significantly\, his black-and-white photographs were captured and developed personally using darkroom techniques in the period of 1960s-80s. Heavily influenced by humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson’s pioneering street photography\, he captured scenes of everyday Singapore with a strikingly modernist composition. \n​ \nAs the period of Hor Kwok Kin’s photographic practice coincided with the transition of a post-independent Singapore\, he managed to archive in the process a variety of environments\, professions and social activities that once characterised life in Old Singapore. His identity as a working-class photographer also allowed him to effectively immortalise moments that proved intensely empathetic to his subjects\, like the quayside labourers or the worker at a quarry\, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries. \n​ \nHor Kwok Kin began to explore colour photography in the 1990s\, retaining his focus on portraying the lived lives and everyday interactions of local communities. In this later period\, he also delved into a close-up examination on the social-emotional life of animals\, such as the portrait of a growing Inuka – the first polar bear born and housed at the Singapore Zoo in the 90s.

DESCRIPTION:This December\, the award-winning Japanese film Plan 75 is back on the big screen for a limited run since its release in 2022. Hailed for its sensitivity and haunting premise\, the film provides a lens to examine the place of seniors in a rapidly ageing society. Plan 75 will be accompanied by the touching short film Float Free (2024)\, where a trio of senior women find joy and a new lease of life from learning to swim at Yishun Swimming Complex. Both films offer an incisive and moving portrait of ageing\, community\, and the value of human connection. This unique pairing is brought together by non-profit arts organisation ArtsWok Collaborative in partnership with indie cinema The Projector.  \n  \nPlan 75 \nDirected by Chie Hayakawa \nIn Japanese with English subtitles \nRated NC16 \n  \nSet in a parallel dystopian Japan\, Plan 75 explores the introduction of a radical nationwide programme for voluntary euthanasia to deal with a super-aged society and the larger psychological repercussions that come with it. The film is a contemplative response to loneliness\, human dignity\, and what it really means to live. \n  \nFloat Free  \nCo-created by Chia Yim Fong\, Koh Tong Cheng\, and Michelle Sim with Salty Xi Jie Ng \nIn Mandarin with English and Mandarin subtitles \nRated G \n  \nFloat Free follows three seniors who overcome their fear of water to learn swimming at an older age. In the process\, they discover a shared community\, the freedom water provides in old age\, and reflections on life and death. The short film was collaboratively scripted by senior collaborators and the lead artist of a recent project under ArtsWok Collaborative’s flagship programme Both Sides\, Now.  \n  \nMembers of the public will have a chance to catch Plan 75 and Float Free in the cinema on 7 and 15 December only at The Projector at Cineleisure. Tickets will be available from 15 November 2024. The Projector will be donating a portion of ticket sales from both screenings to ArtsWok Collaborative in support of the work they do in engaging and developing communities. SUMMARY:Lecture & Screening: Unearthing the "Blue Frontier": The International Seabed Authority's New Mining Code and the Costs of Deep-Sea Mining
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, deep-sea minerals like polymetallic nodules containing copper and cobalt have gained attention as a potential resource for green energy technologies such as batteries\, computers\, and electric cars. Found mainly on the international seabed (as well as within territorial waters)\, these nodules are regulated by the International Seabed Authority (ISA)\, which will finalize a mining code in 2025 that determines future deep-sea exploration and exploitation. Following Singapore’s Deep-Sea Mining Act of 2015\, Ocean Mineral Singapore\, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore and Marine conducted two deep-sea expeditions to the Pacific Ocean. While some argue this extraction is crucial for the green transition\, Pacific nations warn of its harmful impact on marine biodiversity and climate change. This lecture will explore the environmental and societal implications of deep-sea mining\, starting with a screening of the film Blue Peril\, 2022 (INTERPRT / Professor Nabil Ahmed\, Deep Sea Mining Campaign & Ozeanien-Dialog)\, a science-based visual investigation using architectural and spatial analysis to model the potentially irreversible effects of deep-sea mining in the Pacific Ocean. Paired with testimonies from Pacific Island communities\, this film addresses the impacts on their economies and ways of life. SUMMARY:METAL MACHINE MISCHIEF (or how to make noise music with bicycles) by bani haykal
DESCRIPTION:“Riding bikes ain’t s#!+ without climate justice\, without land back\, without liberation of everybody.” Christina Torres\, Cyclista Zine \nThe bicycle is more than just a means of transportation. In our increasingly car-centric and carbon-heavy lifestyle\, cycling is a climate action that slows down the rate at which our planet is burning. Inspiring stories from Gaza have shown us how bicycles can be radically repurposed into washing machines\, sewing machines\, and even power generators. \nIn the first part of the workshop\, participants will be offered a set of unused bicycle components and they will be guided to devise and conceptualise new musical or sonic instruments with them. In the second part\, these unorthodox instruments will be played in a group jam session! \nParticipants are encouraged to bring personal items such as mallets\, drumsticks\, clarinet mouthpieces\, and/or any musical bobs and bits they can incorporate into the instruments. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. DESCRIPTION:“Tayog-Tayog: The Ilonggo Imagination” presents a confluence of personal experiences\, historical narratives\, and indigenous cultural practices\, all intertwined with the fantastical elements of folklore and mythology that dwell within our collective psyche.\n\n\n\nThe Hiligaynon word “tayog” means “to fly off far.” Colloquially\, the expression “tayog-tayog” refers to an “out-of-this-world” idea. This is the starting point for the exhibition\, a launchpad for the lofty heights that the stories from Iloilo have reached—the Panay Sugidanun\, local folklore\, creatures like aswang\, tayho\, and kataw\, and even the narratives of a family history passed down through generations. These stories play a crucial role in retelling our realities and contribute to our collective memory.\n\n\n\nParticipating artists bring forth figments of their imaginations\, breathing life into the enigmatic and the uncanny. “Tayog-Tayog” is an homage to the surrealist tradition\, reimagined through the lens of contemporary and regional sensibilities. The featured works aim to use art to challenge the boundaries between reality and fantasy\, the past and the present\, the tangible and the ephemeral.
