SUMMARY:A Kind of Magic
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Juliana Tan\nCurated by Ng Hui Hsien\n30 May to 22 Jun 2025\nObjectifs Lower Galleries \nOpening: Fri 30 May 2025\, 7pm – 9pm\nFree admission \nRelated events\nArtist Talk with Juliana Tan and Ng Hui Hsien (Please register here)\nSat 14 Jun 2025\, 2pm – 3.30pm\nFree admission \nA Kind of Magic is a photographic journey through a city that no longer exists. Traversing an interplay between imagined and experienced realities\, the images serve as a portal to a temporal landscape that has been irrevocably altered by external forces. Rooted in the artist’s personal displacement from 1998 Indonesia\, a period marked by significant societal unrest and racial tension\, the work transforms personal narrative into a resonant exploration of universal themes: displacement\, remembrance\, and the enduring quest to reclaim our own story. \nAbout the artist\nJuliana Tan is a photographer whose work is rooted in the ephemeral. Her instinct is underscored by her rapt yet gentle observation of the world around her. Juliana’s sensitivity to shifting lights\, hues and timing deftly informs her images as an intimate\, yet infinite\, dialogue—a single moment in time captured within the process of becoming. \nHer first monograph\, A Kind of Magic\, was published by Jordan\, jordan Édition in 2025. Her work Clear Mandate\, in collaboration with Khoo Guo Jie\, was shown at Angkor Photo Festival 2020. \nAbout the curator\nNg Hui Hsien works as an artist\, educator\, and curator. Through her artworks\, she seeks to evoke stillness and wonder\, especially towards our inner landscapes and the more-than-human world. Her artworks have been internationally exhibited in institutions and festivals\, including the MOU Museum of Onomichi City University (Japan)\, GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts (Germany)\, Reykjavík Museum of Photography (Iceland)\, and Comma Space (Singapore). \nAs an independent curator\, Hui Hsien has worked with Angkor Photo Festival (Cambodia) and The Private Museum (Singapore) to present a projection screening and an exhibition respectively in 2024.

SUMMARY:Starlight: A Symphony of Home
DESCRIPTION:Across three nights\, Starlight brings together some of Singapore’s most beloved voices and brightest new talents—meeting on stage\, exchanging stories\, and finding harmony in the spaces between generations. \nCurated and produced by NAC Young Artist Award recipient Ruth Ling—who also helmed Sing Love—Starlight invites you into an evening of songs shaped by memory\, place\, and possibility. Through original music and familiar favourites\, these artists trace the quiet\, everyday moments that make a home: the people we gather with\, the stories we carry\, the future we’re still writing together. \nGuided by the visual imagination of Brian Gothong Tan\, Starlight is less a performance than a meeting point—a space to listen\, to remember\, and to celebrate the voices that will carry us forward.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Bill's 44th
DESCRIPTION:“…buoyant\, mesmerizing\, joy-inducing…”\n– New York Times \n“This isn’t the birthday that Bill had hoped to have. But for the audience\, his 44th is a gift.”\n– New York Times \n★★★★★\n“A celebration of life\, memory and the passage of time\, brilliantly executed and truly unforgettable.”\n– One4Review \n“Manjuck and James have created a show that evolves from this gentle comedy\, with its absurdist elements\, to this touchingly heartfelt reflective piece about [loneliness] and truly finding yourself and loving that person you discover.”\n– The New Current \nThe streamers are hung\, the punch has been spiked\, and the cake is just begging to be eaten! Now\, all Bill has to do is wait for his guests to arrive. \nCreated and puppeteered by Dorothy James and Andy Manjuck\, Bill’s 44th is a non-verbal\, comedic puppet show for adults performed with an original score\, centered on one very worried leading man\, Bill. Many styles of puppetry\, raucous balloons\, and a cheeky piece of crudité all collide to examine the pitfalls of impatience\, the wonder of loneliness\, and the universal passage of time. \nWant to learn from the experts themselves? Check out Andy and Dorothy’s Puppetry Performance Workshop\, perfect for theatre practitioners and students to enhance their skills.

SUMMARY:COLONY – A True Colors Project
DESCRIPTION:Diverse dancers from Southeast Asia and Japan create the imagined world of a colony through dance and movement. Each expressing their personal challenges and aspirations beyond their limitations and comfort zones. \nThey live in enforced proximity in an urban tenement\, yet exist as disparate entities distanced by prejudice\, ignorance and fear. \nThey struggle to make connections despite their differences\, while negotiating long-held preconceptions of what it means to be perfect\, complete\, normal\, valuable\, human. \nIn the natural world\, the survival of any colony of organisms depends on its ability to function as a single cohesive collective. Differences\, diversity\, perceived strengths and weaknesses are embraced as necessities – sine qua non – “without which\, not.”\nAnd so too it is with our colony. \nCOLONY – A True Colors Project is the result of an intense collaborative experiment. A blank canvas on which the artistic director\, choreographer\, composer\, film director\, dancers and designers organically paint a narrative in dance\, music and film.\nUnscripted films are seamlessly woven in. They give the audience a peek behind the curtain\, revealing the most sacred element of any artist’s creative journey – the rehearsal space.

SUMMARY:PRISM 48
DESCRIPTION:More Than Ever\, we seek dialogue. \nIn 2025\, Singapore marks its 60th year of independence. How has our cultural identity evolved\, and what can we learn from the evolutions of other cultural narratives and strategies? This conversation series reflects on these questions through the lens of SIFA. \nHow do we take the measure of the yawning gulf and uncanny symmetries between a self-perceived cultural desert and a key global node? What is the relationship between festival-making and nation-building? What are the hallmarks and impact of Singapore storytelling? Decades into our post-colonial existence\, how has our relationship with Asia’s traditions changed? How do we master the art of plugging into global circuits\, and what does participation in such circuits mean for art-making in Singapore? What new forms have we invented to make space for difficult conversations? What are the imperatives and challenges of incubating new creative voices in the post-pandemic landscape? \nIn 1977\, the first Singapore Arts Festival kicked off with performances from 77 groups over seven days. In the festival’s 48th year\, these six conversations take stock of how far we have travelled\, and the journey ahead.

SUMMARY:Kitchen Lithography Workshop | Carbonated Creations
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that common household items such as aluminium foil and Coca-Cola can be used in printmaking?\n\nThis hands-on workshop introduces kitchen lithography\, an accessible technique based on the same principles as traditional lithography\, where an oil-based material repels water to form an inked image.\n\nBe inspired by Wifredo Lam’s works which blended surrealism with natural forms. Create bold\, line-based compositions that echo Lam’s expressive hybrid imagery. Introduce colour through a simple stencil technique\, layering vibrant forms over monochrome prints to create dreamlike visuals.\n\nRecommended for ages 12 and above.

SUMMARY:Han Mengyun: Jewels of Impermanence
DESCRIPTION:Singapore\, May 2025 — ShanghART Singapore is pleased to present Jewels of Impermanence\, London-based artist Han Mengyun’s first solo exhibition in the gallery’s Singapore space. The title is borrowed from a poem the artist penned amid the unsettling spring of 2020. The show gathers a selection of paintings and drawings made between 2020 and 2025\, providing a scintillating\, at times enigmatic\, glimpse into the artist’s pandemic-era turmoil and the spiritual composure she forged through an aesthetic meditation on impermanence. \nHan’s images stage an encounter between Dutch vanitas paintings and Buddhist depictions of skeletons and skulls. Whereas vanitas and memento mori traditions expose worldly vanity\, Buddhist “meditations on repulsiveness” confront impermanence as a precondition of enlightenment. Interweaving iconographies through a repertoire of skulls\, hourglasses\, and other emblems of transience\, Han constructs mandala-like configurations\, printed with woodblocks she has collected across Asia. The mandala serves as a phenomenological prism—an architectonic map through which both the macrocosm and the psyche can be apprehended. Such material and visual hybridity stages a tension between sensuous surface and metaphysical aspiration. Works such as Spaß und Tod\, with its skeletal hands poised in play\, recall the late-medieval danse macabre and Tibetan thangka of the citipati\, acknowledging death as a kinetic partner in the continuum of life and the catalyst of existential transformation. \nThe series marks the artist’s return to oil painting which she rejected for almost a decade in search of the alternative to ‘the Western’. “In the prospect of grim uncertainty”\, the artist says\, “I felt an urgent craving for the corporeal lusciousness of oil\, the exhilarating violence of the brush\, the humble endurance of canvas—capacities ink and rice paper cannot sustain. In this existential aporia\, I understood for the first time the Heideggerean Sein-zum-Tode\, being-toward-death—the unflinching awareness of finitude makes life infinitely possible.” \nJewels of Impermanence \nIn the silent altar of the mind\, the soul awakens to whisper words of truth. That’s the gift from disasters\, a garland of quietude. There is neither past nor future. The present is forever present. That is also my present. May the song of birds break the dawn. May fear manifest itself as mere illusion. The siege of clouds fails to capture the night-dwelling moon\, whose mission is to reveal the veracity of light and compassion. My mind becomes clear and still\, like a pond holding moonlight\, like a mirror polished in the river. The ancient Persians wear poetry like jewelry\, I take impermanence as treasury of light shedding on the vicissitudes of life. \n~ Han Mengyun

SUMMARY:Objectifs Film Club: Passages of Memory & The Imaginary
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wed 4 Jun 2025\, 7.30pm – 8.30pm\nVenue: Objectifs’ Workshop Space \nTaking place in conjunction with a kind of magic \nFree admission\, please RSVP here. \nAs this event will be taking place in conjunction with a kind of magic\, we highly recommend arriving before 7pm to have a chance to view the exhibition before attending the Film Club. \n\nHow do physical and geographical relocations of self lead to internal shifts that affect one’s emotions and memories? And can the personal or singular narrative be just as powerful when used to explore wider issues and concerns that affect us all? Where does the imagination insert itself in our attempts to make sense of our identities\, histories\, and personal experiences\, especially amidst wider forces that shape them beyond our control? \nJoin us at our upcoming Film Club event\, taking place in conjunction with Juliana Tan’s exhibition\, a kind of magic\, where we will be exploring these topics and more. The session will kickstart with a screening of Polen Ly’s ‘Further and Further Away‘\, followed by a conversation between Juliana\, academic and researcher Amillin Hussain\, as well as audience members about the similarities in issues that both film and exhibition bring to light. \n\nAbout ‘Further and Further Away‘ by Polen Ly \nA young indigenous Bunong woman and her older brother spend one last day in their rural village in northeastern Cambodia\, before an impending move to the capital city in search of a more prosperous life. While her brother is excited for the move\, she senses a quiet desire to return to their long-gone village that was lost to the development of a nearby hydroelectric dam a few years earlier. \nAbout the speakers \nJuliana Tan is a photographer whose work is rooted in the ephemeral. Her instinct is underscored by her rapt yet gentle observation of the world around her. Juliana’s sensitivity to shifting lights\, hues and timing deftly informs her images as an intimate\, yet infinite\, dialogue—a single moment in time captured within the process of becoming. Her first monograph\, A Kind of Magic\, was published by Jordan\, jordan Édition in 2025. Her work Clear Mandate\, in collaboration with Khoo Guo Jie\, was shown at Angkor Photo Festival 2020. \nNurul Amillin Hussain is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Sociology at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Amillin’s research looks at sustainable and smart infrastructures in high-rise housing estates\, focusing on Singapore. She received her BA in Sociology from NTU\, an MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge\, and a PhD in Geography from the University of Oxford. In her free time\, she takes walks\, enjoys creative writing\, and volunteers with The Codette Project. \nAbout the Objectifs Film Library\nThe Objectifs Film Library is an initiative by Objectifs that aims to be a resource for film lovers in Singapore and the region. Currently\, the collection is focused on short films from Southeast Asia. \nUsers will be able to rent some of these films to watch in the comfort of their homes\, and a wider selection is available exclusively at our centre. \nAccess the Objectifs Film Library here.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Gibbon
DESCRIPTION:★★★★\n“Seriously interesting and wryly amusing”\n– The Guardian \n  \n“The combination of mesmerising manipulation and dry comedy left me wanting more”\n– Circus Diaries \n  \n“…an absorbing and entertaining work achieved through a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry”\n– Resolution \n  \nDevastatingly slick and wonderfully thought-provoking\, Gibbon fuses dance\, physical theatre and juggling to explore the absurd and comedic connections between human behaviours. \n  \nCo-produced by Olivier Award-winning Gandini Juggling and breakout stars Chris Patfield and José Triguero\, Gibbon is a surreal and charming feast of juggling choreography with a sense of humour and a hint of absurdity. The production captivates with a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry.  Achieving success while masking failure\, the narrative is formed when the action cuts between the creation and the execution of hypnotic patterns and juggling movement sequences. \n  \nGibbon takes inspiration from the world of dance\, innovating choreographically and conceptually\, mixing different art forms with juggling and exploring ideas through movement and devised theatre to create a surreal and touching atmosphere. Patfield and Triguero capture the tension of gravity defiance\, combining the inevitable speed of an object falling with the slow movement of intertwined arms and hands. \n  \nPoetic and comedic\, Gibbon is a unique spectacle that invites you to marvel equally at the depth of thought and the proficiency of its performers.

SUMMARY:Stories of Hope – Help Someone Paint Their Story Today
DESCRIPTION:Auntie Julie’s mum was her best friend. She’d tell us how\, growing up\, her fondest memories were of the two of them devouring dumplings during their Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. \nIt’s been over ten years since Auntie Julie’s mum passed. Before that\, she had been her caregiver for years and when her mum was gone\, the rhythm of Auntie Julie’s life went with her. \nThrough art therapy\, Auntie Julie’s life was turned around when she met a community of individuals who were navigating their own personal grief\, and found in them friends who lifted her\, and who she could help uplift. She began to reconnect with herself\, with others\, and with hope. She painted\, she laughed\, and years later on\, she still greets her newfound friends every morning in their WhatsApp group chat. \nThis SG60\, we tell the stories of strength and progress like Auntie Julie. She reminds us that growth doesn’t just happen in buildings or systems\, it happens in people—and we want more people like Auntie Julie to have that chance at hope. \nJoin us as we do our part to honour the stories that don’t always make the headlines\, but deserve to be told. \nLet’s paint more stories of hope — together.

SUMMARY:TAF Conversation Series: Puangsoi “Rose” Aksornsawang
DESCRIPTION:Puangsoi “Rose” Aksornsawang will share a short excerpt of sound and text that takes water as a site where personal stories intersect with public histories. This excerpt and ongoing research will inform a forthcoming artwork which explores Aksornsawang’s consistent engagement with water in her past projects. This artwork will incorporate original writing and sonic recordings in various locations and bodies of water\, from Berlin and Singapore to the Nakorn Sawan (origin of the Chao Phraya River and the title of Aksornsawang’s first feature film). \nAksornsawang’s presentation will be followed by a conversation with TAF Associate Curator Wong Binghao (Bing) about her previous artistic projects\, and her use of literary\, filmic\, and multimedia approaches to deconstruct the materiality of art objects and their disciplinary boundaries. \nAbout Tanoto Art Foundation (TAF) Conversation Series\nDeveloped to manifest the foundation’s process-based and research-driven programming\, TAF Conversation Series engages artists and their collaborators to respond\, reflect\, and shape TAF’s research concerns. Intently blurring the line between the work-in-progress and its finished form\, TAF Conversation Series highlights the process and flux of artistic practice\, where transformation is constant. TAF’s 2025 / 2026 research rubric is Materiality. \nRSVP here.
