SUMMARY:Performance: sifrmu by Bani Haykal
DESCRIPTION:“sifrmu: when i talk to you\, there’s always someone else listening\,” is a performance involving bani’s encryption programme\, sifrmu\, which encrypts plaintext into ciphertext + sound. \nsifrmu is a portmanteau of 2 words. the word “sifr” is Arabic for = zero\, of which in Malay is called sifar. Etymologically it is also the root word for cipher. The word / suffix “mu” is Malay for = you or yours\, sifrmu translates to mean ‘your cipher’. \nThis performance reflects on the kinds of intimacies users and machines are part of\, from past spirits to their presence in manifestations of who we will become in time ahead.

SUMMARY:Nature of Art exhibition\, Singapore
DESCRIPTION:The Fullerton Hotel presents Inessa Kalabekova’s exhibition in Singapore\, called “Nature of Art\,” from March 1 to March 30\, 2023. Here the artist explores the sights and secret corners of Singapore’s parks and gardens\, through the medium of painting and collage. Each painting is in a dialogue with the poems of Alice Kalabekova\, Inessa’s young daughter\, in a process of co-creation. In the show Inessa looks at the peculiar Singaporean natural context with child-like eyes; bamboo\, banana trees\, butterflies\, leaves\, birds\, flowers\, and water lilies are not just decorative elements\, or a backdrop to a peaceful walk. For her\, they are animated entities\, and each bush or branch can be the hiding place of a mythological creature. Myths are indeed central for the artist\, who draws from both Eastern and the Western culture\, to create her own inner tradition. Indeed\, when Inessa tackles a new canvas\, she doesn’t just make a decorative piece\, but rather creates a new\, rich and multi-layered world to share with viewers.

SUMMARY:Cheong Soo Pieng: Drawings
DESCRIPTION:artcommune proudly presents Cheong Soo Pieng: Drawings\, an exhibition of over 30 drawings on paper that span three decades of the artist’s career arc. Drawing was integral to Soo Pieng’s practice and many drawings made during his lifetime were fashioned into recurring forms and expressions in his oil and ink paintings. It is estimated that his drawings alone amount to around two or even three thousand works\, many of which are now in Singapore’s national collection. \n\nCheong Soo Pieng (b. 1917\, Xiamen\, China – d. 1983\, Singapore) is an important pioneer of the Nanyang art style and one of the most creative Chinese artists of the 20th century. Soo Pieng studied at Xiamen Academy of Fine Arts and furthered his education at Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai. After the 2nd World War\, he relocated to Singapore in 1946 to take on a teaching post at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and thereon began his fervent amalgamation of Modern Western and Chinese pictorial styles. Often drawing inspiration from themes and subject matters relating to his new\, immediate environment in Southeast Asia\, the landmark trip to Bali in 1952 inspired Soo Pieng (and three other pioneer artists Chen Wen Hsi\, Chen Chong Swee\, Liu Kang) to reinvent groundbreaking pictorial modes culminating to the Nanyang art style. A trailblazer throughout his lifetime\, his creative output of varied styles and mediums was instrumental in shaping the early Singapore art scene. \n\nThe selection in this exhibition largely dates from the period of late-1940s-early 1960s\, which offers a glimpse into Soo Pieng’s captivating repertoire of everyday encounters on the streets of Singapore and Malaysia\, as well as his sojourns abroad at places such as Bali (1952)\, Borneo (1959) and Europe (1962-63). Also featured are drawings of Balinese scenes and figures completed by Soo Pieng during his last known visit to the island in 1977\, which captures his aesthetic shift to a highly ornate and detailed style of drawing in the later period. Together\, these drawings apprehend the interiority of Soo Pieng’s thoughts and the primacy of form in his painting process.

SUMMARY:Battle for the Year 3000: Solo exhibition by Seelan Palay
DESCRIPTION:Battle for the Year 3000\nSolo exhibition by Seelan Palay\nOpening 6pm\, 4 March 2023\nExhibition runs 4 to 13 March 2023\nMaven Gallery\, 31 Neil Rd\, Singapore 088819\nRSVP to attend \n3000: The Fight for the Future \nIn the Year 3000\, the falsehoods of Lies are destroyed by the Light of Truth and its Ability to penetrate through them. The Darkness of Ignorance is Banished by the Light of Knowledge\, which Perpetually Destroys the Darkness of Ignorance. The Loneliness of Fear is Confronted by the Light of Love\, which puts an End to the Loneliness of Fear. \nThe Struggle for the Core of Existence will be waged in the Year 3000. The Battle for the Universe’s very Essence will pit the Light and the Dark\, the Good and the Evil\, the Yin and the Yang against one another\, and then transcend all binaries. \nThe Light will Fight for Justice\, Truth\, and Love under the Direction of the Goddess of War. The Dark will fight for Lies\, Hatred\, and Fear under the Direction of the Corruption’s Champion. \nIn the Year 3000\, when the Darkness threatened to consume the last glimmer of Hope\, the Goddess of War descended from the Heavens to take up arms against the Forces of Evil. They battled the enemy with Their Chosen Champion by Their side. \nThough it was a challenging and bloody conflict\, the Goddess and Their Champion ultimately Prevailed. The Three Principles were brought back to Earth\, and the Light’s foes were vanquished. \nThe World is once more a place of Possibility and Hope in the Year 3001. Humanity now has a second chance for a better future thanks to the bravery of the Goddess of War and Their Champion. \nThe formidable Being known as the Goddess of War fought for the Liberation of Humanity from Oppression. Their Champion is a representation of Bravery\, and They are a Symbol of Possibility and Hope. \nBut until the Year 3001\, this looming conflict determines the Future of all Life. Truth\, Justice\, and Love will rule Supremely if the Light Triumphs. Lies\, Hatred\, and Fear will rule the World if the Dark succeeds. \nThis conflict is the Third Millennium War.

SUMMARY:NUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between
DESCRIPTION:NUS Arts Festival returns to campus with our latest edition: Spaces Between! \nRunning across 3 weekends in March\, you’ll be spoilt for choice with over 20 different shows spanning multiple genres and disciplines like dance\, music\, theatre\, film\, art installations\, dialogue\, and more! \nThe theme Spaces Between examines the idea of liminal spaces\, the uncomfortable unknown as we transition between phases\, and states. While liminal spaces bring discomfort and ambiguity\, they also present us with opportunities for growth and positive change\, physically\, emotionally\, and metaphorically. \nIn a world of diverse and divided views\, NUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between seeks to show how art can build connections and demonstrate that there is more to gain in the spaces between.

SUMMARY:Tree Spirit/ 森灵: Visions of the Arboreal by Lim Tze Peng
DESCRIPTION:Delight in the lesser-known arboreal works of Lim Tze Peng\, one of Singapore’s distinguished artists and Cultural Medallion recipient\, in Not gallery’s exhibition\, titled Tree Spirit/ 森灵: Visions of the Arboreal by Lim Tze Peng. Inspired by the sublimity of the magnificent banyan tree\, visitors can now take a walk through 12 of this prestigious artist’s body of work created between 2006 and 2008 that encapsulate\, as he once mused\, “visual poems of chaos”.  \nHighly regarded for his Chinese ink paintings of old-world Singapore and abstract hutuzi calligraphy\, this exhibition marks an important milestone in Lim’s artistic endeavor where he incorporates contemporary techniques with traditional Chinese painting brushwork – cropping\, collaborating with chance\, and tilting the picture plane. \nRevel in Lim’s serendipity and his experimental spirit as he crafts a body of work that captures the wilderness and grandiosity of nature.  \nA Curator Tour is also available for members of the public to join. It will be held on 11 March\, at 4pm. No registration required. A virtual exhibition with three additional works from the artist’s Tree Spirit series will also be available for visitors to explore online via Spatial\, from 11 to 31 March 2023.

Dragon Number 7 is there too. He is just invisible to earth walkers.” – guessed our daughter. \nThis book and the exhibition is an attempt to share these fantasies through whimsical visual worlds of Inessa’s artworks and poems by Alice Kalabekova. SUMMARY:Beyond & Back
DESCRIPTION:BEYOND & BACK features recent paintings by two young and emerging local artists:\nDominic Thian & Matthias Chua. The paintings presented seek to go beyond trending\nand contemporary modes of engagement with art. What is hoped will emerge is an\nauthentic raison-d’etre—a simple and harmonious manner of creating and\nappreciating art. \nThe viewer will see works inspired by ethereal impressions of light\, and pieces that\ntap into the unlimited expressive potential of the human figure. Our artists will\nshowcase a repertoire of work which includes scintillating outdoor etudes\, delicate and\nintricate still-life paintings\, and a tour-de force of portraits and monumental figurative\nwork. \nJust as how the early Nanyang generation were enthralled by the modernist\nmovement toward more primitive modes and motifs of expression\, so too do the works\nhere revere more primordial manners of perception to explore the sophistication of\nexpression instead of the deconstructivism that is popular today. \nThe exhibition doors are open for viewers to join us at The Arts House from Saturday\nMarch 25th to Sunday April 2nd.

SUMMARY:Art & Poetry book Launch\, Art Tour by Artist & Poems recited by the 12 y.o.
DESCRIPTION:“Nature of Art” book Launch (family-friendly event) \nSeen thousands of times\, the seemingly ordinary sights of Singapore nature hide stories that were never told. “I love to explore the nature of the garden city. I love taking paths less traveled to soak nature scenes with its visuals\, smells\, and noises. Together with my family\, we love making up stories about what we see.” – shares Inessa. \nAnother day we spotted the butterflies by the lake flying in an unusual manner: as if they can see something that we cannot. “They are not alone. Dragon Number 7 is there too. He is just invisible to earth walkers.” – guessed our daughter. \nThis book and the exhibition is an attempt to share these fantasies through whimsical visual worlds of Inessa’s artworks and poems by Alice Kalabekova. Bamboos\, rustic benches\, butterflies\, and water lilies of Singapore parks… you won’t be able to see them the same again. \nProgramme highlights:- be surprised by artist’s stories on how ordinary sights of Singapore parks led to creation of whimsical worlds of artworks\,- be mesmerized by artworks-inspired poems recited by the 12 y.o. author- hunt for dragons & mythical creatures hidden in the artworks \nBook: “Nature of Art”\, artworks by Inessa Kalabekova\, poems by Alice KalabekovaDate: March 25\, 2023 (Sat) \nTime: 10.30am-11.30pm & 4pm-5pm \nAdmission: freeSuitable for 6-12 y.o. children & their parents
