SUMMARY:The Vault: The TRUE Awards
DESCRIPTION:The Vault: The TRUE Awards comprises a performance-response and a reading of excerpts from the original text. \nFirst staged sixty years ago in 1964\, Lim Chor Pee’s A White Rose at Midnight centres around disillusioned English-educated scholar Lee Hua Min\, and his tumultous relationship with his flatmate Wong’s sister\, the Chinese-educated ex-nightclub singer Ching Mei. Written and staged in the uncertain\, volatile years pre-independence\, A White Rose at Midnight was a humorous\, witty and prescient portrait of both a soul and a nation divided. \nA White Rose at Midnight was first performed by the Experimental Theatre Club at the Cultural Centre Theatre in National University of Singapore\, and received a partial dramatised reading in 2014 as part of Centre 42’s lecture-performance\, The Vault 1.1 – Nineteen Sixty-Four. \nThis year\, seven students from the National University of Singapore’s Theatre & Performance Studies TS3103 Theatre Lab will present a fully-staged response to A White Rose at Midnight. In accompaniment to this performance-response\, excerpts of the original text will be read by selected alumni of the Theatre & Performance Studies programme. \n*** \nJoin us to experience this performance-response and celebrate the nominees of The TRUE Awards.

SUMMARY:Aporia - “Nan đề”
DESCRIPTION:Aporia (“Nan đề”) is a play written and directed by Laura Butler Rivera and translated by Pham Thu Uyen with an ensemble of actors from ACA’s actor lab and training. Aporia is a philosophical celebration of creativity and the process of unleashing it against all odds.\n\n“Aporia” (“Nan đề”) is a captivating and philosophical play that follows the protagonist\, Mejendra\, through a series of surreal and thought-provoking scenarios. SUMMARY:Dramaturgs & Producers
DESCRIPTION:DRAMATURGS & is a new capsule series of roundtable conversations centering the work of and relationship between dramaturgs and their artistic collaborators. Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe first conversation kicking off this series is DRAMATURGS & PRODUCERS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. What brings a producer and a dramaturg into a project together and how do they navigate their positionalities in an artistic collaboration? As multi-hyphenate practitioners who identify with both roles\, how do they draw boundaries or ‘switch hats’\, and is that necessary? \nJoin us in this exciting discussion facilitated by Juliet Chia\, and hear from a panel of luminous producers Michele Lim\, Melissa Lim and Fezhah Maznan.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival presents THOM PAIN (based on nothing) by Edith Podesta\, Yarra Ileto & Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Australia & Singapore)
DESCRIPTION:“Thom Pain is at bottom a surreal meditation on the empty promises life makes\, the way experience never lives up to the weird and awesome fact of being. But it is also\, in its odd\, bewitching beauty\, an affirmation of life’s worth.” \n—The New York Times \n  \nThom Pain is trying to save his life to save your life\, in that order. \nFilled with biting humour\, desire\, and lost innocence\, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated show THOM PAIN (based on nothing) is one ordinary man’s extraordinary search through the wreckage of his life. \n  \nHailed as “astonishing …a small masterpiece” by The New York Times\, this insightful\, at times surreal\, production catalogues the eternal agonies of the human condition in wit and one last-ditch plea for empathy and enlightenment. \n  \nDirected by Edith Podesta and choreographed by Yarra Ileto\, THOM PAIN (based on nothing) is performed by students from the BA (Hons) in Performance Making programme at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \n  \nPost-show dialogue on 19 January 2024\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request. SUMMARY:Symbiocene
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, a mysterious and highly disruptive force ruptures the boundaries between humans\, plants\, and animals. Under the banner of Expedisi Harapan Sembilan\, three outcasts – a world-weary park ranger\, a psychic\, and a fungal traveller – are sent into the epicentre of this rupture\, Penang Botanical Gardens\, to investigate. \nWhat will they find and how will it change them? \nSymbiocene is an ecopunk tale of love\, grief\, and a wild re-imagination of a world where humans\, plants\, and animals live together symbiotically. \nCoined by the Australian philosopher\, Glenn Albrecht\, Symbiocene is a period of re-integration between humans and the rest of nature\, a time of living together and companionship. In the play\, the Symbiocene is imagined as a world populated by human-plant-animals creatures where language and meaning are deconstructed and reconstructed. \nInspired by the genesis of the cyberpunk genre\, we coined a term “ecopunk”. “Eco” as in ecology\, the relations between living things and their habitats. “Punk” as in a defiance against the status quo. In our ecopunk world\, we follow a group of outcasts as they navigate a world that re-centres all living things as equal.

SUMMARY:Fault Lines
DESCRIPTION:“The Aziz family reunites in New York City. Nobody leaves their baggage behind.” \nAfter graduating university on a government scholarship\, Shereen Rahman didn’t return to Kuala Lumpur and settled down in New York City instead. \nIt’s been a few years\, and she has a secret. A big\, scandalous secret. \nBut everything should be ok for as long as she’s 10\,000 miles away from her family. \nAnd then one day\, they visit. \nThere’s her mother Habsah. And her uncle Zul\, and his wife Juita. They’re hoping to spend time with Shereen and her uncle Ray\, a fellow transplant to the city. \nAs the days pass\, it becomes obvious that everyone has their own reason to come on the trip. And it’s not to catch the bright lights of the Big Apple. \nThis is one family reunion you do not want to miss. \nA debut full-length play by Adriana Nordin Manan\, “Fault Lines” was a semi-finalist in the International Scratchpad Series by The Playwrights Realm\, New York City (2021). \nProduced by: Protagonist Studio \nStory Development by: Cocoon Creative Lab \nPlaywright/Executive Producer/Producer: Adriana Nordin Manan \nDirector: Ghafir Akbar
