DESCRIPTION:Sound Plot is Centre 42’s audio plays series\, each edition drawing on a certain geographic area in Singapore. This edition\, produced in collaboration with the NTU Museum\, zooms in on Jurong West and its surrounding area\, where the university is located. \nThis is an invitation for two writers to respond through audio drama to this fascinating area\, guided by the curatorial prompt “Ulu”. Selected writers will need to be available for an intensive 3-week script development phase in October 2024\, and will work with a director during the recording and production process in November & December 2024. Audio production will be done in collaboration with Artwave Studio\, and slated for release online in January 2025. \nThis is a paid opportunity\, and commissioned writers will receive $1\,000 each. \n\n\n\n\nTO APPLY\n\n\n\n\nApplication period runs from 5 August 2024 (12pm) to 15 September 2024 (12pm). Here thrum large swathes of undeveloped secondary forest\, rewilding over the memories of the gambier plantations that kickstarted Singapore’s endless development. Here\, the coast hugs the mouth of the Straits of Johor\, where we can still imagine our deep connections to ancient kingdoms. Here lies a large university town\, filled with utopian architecture that tells a story about a world that could be so much better and kinder to the earth. And here lie the hopes and dreams of new families looking to build lives in one of the fastest-growing residential zones on the island\, each built-to-order flat remaking the “ulu” face of the Western region. \nWe invite you to write a play that reckons in any way with these ideas. It unfolds as a collaborative effort uniting creators from Chile\, France\, and Singapore. The work explores the intersections of women from diverse cultures and the sense of cultural identity. The central conflict emerges as the character grapples with aligning familial beliefs and the expectations of assimilating into a foreign culture. It also delves into themes of gender equality\, cultural identity\, and humanity\, positioned within self-fiction and physical theatre.

Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe second of this year’s series is DRAMATURGS & CHOREOGRAPHERS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. When and how do choreographers invite a dramaturg into the choreographic process? What tensions arise between the choreographer’s creative autonomy and the dramaturg’s perspectives and insights? DESCRIPTION:A work inspired by the power of the voice\, and what voices and our breath can bring into being\, with ‘suara’ meaning ‘voice/sound’ in Malay\, and ‘oro rua’ in Māori\, meaning ‘to resonate’. SUARA / Oro Rua imagines a distant\, post-anthropocentric future long after the world has gone silent…until the day our fossilised voices once again emerge\, their aural energies breaking through the ground like geothermal force. What worlds would those voices call into being? What might those voices declare\, lament\, or confess? The work brings the Māori concept of Te Kore\, the ‘void’ that exists beyond the world of everyday experience\, together with the sonic history of the Earth — which tells us how hundreds of millions of years of evolution and communication happened in silence before living creatures found their voices. Featuring original music composed and directed by Safuan Johari and performed by Singaporean musicians and vocalists\, with dance/movement choreographed by Eddie Elliott and performed by dancers from Aotearoa. SUARA / Oro Rua is commissioned by the Singapore International Festival of Arts\, and supported by Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa.

Festivalgoers can look forward to a diverse line-up ranging from dynamic transnational collaborations\, exciting invited international presentations\, an engaging event that celebrates Singapore’s vibrant theatre scene\, as well as Little SIFA\, an all-new programming pillar dedicated to families and children. Examples of these highlights include:  \n\nMoby Dick by Norwegian director\, actress\, puppet-maker\, and artistic director of Plexus Polaire\, Yngvild Aspeli\, presents a 90-minute live adaptation of Herman Melville’s mythical work about an ancient white whale. DESCRIPTION:An experimental performance built from the first The Sisa Prize\, a writing prize for young Filipino women writers\, Sisa Bilang Manlilikha (Sisa as Creator) is also the sixth variation on the character of Sisa\, as reconfigured and reimagined by Carlo Paulo Pacolor from the archetypal character of the crazy woman in National Hero Jose Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tangere. The variations rethink\, and re-engage in conversations about womanhood across Philippine history and local contexts\, with this sixth variation drawing from the woman as creator in the present\, and the push and pull between personal creative impulses and the roles she must fulfil\, the performances she needs to put up\, for the institutions and communities she is part of.  \nSisa Bilang Manlilikha\, sisa sa ika-anim (Sisa as Creator\, Sisa at the sixth)\, is by Carlo Paulo Pacolor and Katrina Stuart Santiago\, performed by Serena Magiliw.  \nThis is the second and final ticketed run of the performance.

DESCRIPTION:The Vault: The TRUE Awards comprises a performance-response and a reading of excerpts from the original text. \nFirst staged sixty years ago in 1964\, Lim Chor Pee’s A White Rose at Midnight centres around disillusioned English-educated scholar Lee Hua Min\, and his tumultous relationship with his flatmate Wong’s sister\, the Chinese-educated ex-nightclub singer Ching Mei. Written and staged in the uncertain\, volatile years pre-independence\, A White Rose at Midnight was a humorous\, witty and prescient portrait of both a soul and a nation divided. \nA White Rose at Midnight was first performed by the Experimental Theatre Club at the Cultural Centre Theatre in National University of Singapore\, and received a partial dramatised reading in 2014 as part of Centre 42’s lecture-performance\, The Vault 1.1 – Nineteen Sixty-Four. \nThis year\, seven students from the National University of Singapore’s Theatre & Performance Studies TS3103 Theatre Lab will present a fully-staged response to A White Rose at Midnight. In accompaniment to this performance-response\, excerpts of the original text will be read by selected alumni of the Theatre & Performance Studies programme. \n*** \nJoin us to experience this performance-response and celebrate the nominees of The TRUE Awards.

DESCRIPTION:Will you participate? Will you be manipulated? Will you listen? Will you really listen? \nWith no rehearsals\, no director\, a sealed script and a different performer each time\, internationally acclaimed White Rabbit\, Red Rabbit\, by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour\, is an audacious theatrical experiment and a potent reminder of the transgressive and transformative power of theatre. \nForbidden to leave his native Iran\, Soleimanpour wrote a play which travelled the world in his place. The audience joins each different performer on a journey into the unknown; stumbling upon the personal and profound\, the limits of liberty and where theatre can take you. \nWhite Rabbit\, Red Rabbit will be presented on 13 March 2024 in celebration of Let There Be Theatre day\, a global initiative by Aurora Nova to celebrate the resilience of live theatre. On this day\, White Rabbit\, Red Rabbit will be performed all over the world. This year\, there will be over 35 performances in countries such as Australia\, Austria\, Brazil\, Canada\, Germany\, Romania and USA. In Singapore\, it will be performed by Gary Tang in Cantonese (script translated by Tan Cher Kian) and Doreen Toh in Hokkien. \n2024 will also mark the 10th anniversary staging of White Rabbit\, Red Rabbit in Singapore. DESCRIPTION:DRAMATURGS & is a new capsule series of roundtable conversations centering the work of and relationship between dramaturgs and their artistic collaborators. Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe first conversation kicking off this series is DRAMATURGS & PRODUCERS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. What brings a producer and a dramaturg into a project together and how do they navigate their positionalities in an artistic collaboration? As multi-hyphenate practitioners who identify with both roles\, how do they draw boundaries or ‘switch hats’\, and is that necessary? \nJoin us in this exciting discussion facilitated by Juliet Chia\, and hear from a panel of luminous producers Michele Lim\, Melissa Lim and Fezhah Maznan.
