SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Eclipse by The Necessary Stage
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \nAbsorbingly told by [2008 staging’s actor] Umar Ahmed\, Eclipse suggests that ancestral memory is never as meaningful as the allegiances of everyday life. \n— The Guardian UK \n  \n  \n  \n(Playwright Haresh Sharma) has demonstrated a deftness and maturity in scriptwriting\, a deeper inquiry into life and humanity\, as well as an evident progress in terms of his creations. \n— 联合早报 Lianhe Zaobao [translated from Chinese] \nA young Singaporean man is making a journey to his father’s birthplace in Hyderabad\, Pakistan. With him are his father’s ashes. As he makes the arduous trip\, he retraces the original journey made by millions of people—including his parents and grandparents—in 1947\, during the partition of India and Pakistan. \nWritten by Cultural Medallion recipient Haresh Sharma\, Eclipse is a play that looks at three generations of men struggling with their dreams and their journeys\, offering an intimate look at personal stories affected by historical events. \nFirst presented as a short play to critical acclaim by Scotland’s 7:84 Theatre at Traverse Theatre\, Eclipse was developed into a full-length production for the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2008. \nAlmost 80 years after the Partition\, this staging with a fresh new direction by Associate Artist A Yagnya stars award-winning Singapore actor Shrey Bhargava. It also features Indian classical vocalist Sveta Kilpady. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after the performances on 16 and 17 January 2025\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 17 January 2025. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com by 6 December 2024.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: WePushTheSky by Qabila
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows. \n… part history lesson\, part culinary exploration\, and part feminist fable\n \n— Karthik Ranganathan\, Citizen Matters \nThe play is a triumph of storytelling and is exceptionally brave.. \n—Venkat Srinivasan\, Sabrang India \nWePushTheSky is an interactive solo performance that weaves together food\, song\, story\, myth\, and history. Where personal stories meet community histories\, survival stories of the Karbala entwine with songs of the Ramayana\, and anecdotes from the past confront desires about the future. A play that reflects on an urgent social reality of our present times—friendships that have been lost\, gained\, or have endured amidst increasing shrill political rhetoric across the world. \nWritten and performed by Nisha Abdulla and directed by Ujwala Rao\, WePushTheSky centres friendship and feminist solidarities as an antidote to the politics of hate. The play invites the audience to listen deeply to another’s reality and elevates listening to the act of an assertive ally. WePushTheSky has toured widely to warm receptions in India\, performed at the Feminist Theatre Festival in Jenin\, Occupied Palestine\, and has been invited to perform at the 15th Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) International Forum in Bangkok\, Thailand. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 16 January 2025. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com by 6 December 2024.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Dancing with the Ghost of My Child by Noor Effendy Ibrahim\, Ruby Jayaseelan & NAFA
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \na unique approach\, rather bold and different \n—Natya Vichara on Purushi by Ruby Jayaseelan \nI know [Effendy’s work] will express a kind of pain and anger acceptable in the performance space\, a pain and anger that is often delegitimised or minimised or considered “inappropriate” elsewhere—and I cherish his work for that reason. \n—Corrie Tan\, Jom Media on ANAK by Very Shy Gurl by fendy \nI myself am an absolute abyss. \n—Antonin Artaud \nIn the beginning\, God created despair\, for men to find hope within. Someone heard someone else say this somewhere before\, sometime back. But no one knows who\, when and where. It must have been God herself who had said this through some men. Only God could be that smart to tease men into such futility. And here\, men find themselves being baited into their own despair. \nConceptualised and directed by Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Ruby Jayaseelan\, Dancing with the Ghost of My Child is an experimental physical theatre performance written by Elvira Foo Jing  Yun\, Gregory Kong Ka-Ee\, Lex (Lee Zhi Qi)\, and Liu Qintong (Amelia) exploring vulnerability\, trauma and the desire to heal. It is devised by students from the BA (Honours) in Performance Making programme at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \nCo-presented with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (a founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore). \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 10 January 2025. SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: The End of Winter by Siren Theatre Co
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows. \n  \n★★★★★\n… complex\, entertaining\, emotionally varied but crystal clear\n \n— Theatre Travels \n★★★★★\nIt’s a bravura performance from Jane Phegan…a theatrical experience of bonewarming depth and of hope.\n \n— Reviews by Judith \nWill climate change erase winter\, leaving it to exist only in fairy tales\, paintings\, and historical accounts? In hot\, bushfire-prone Australia\, the winters are increasingly warmer and shorter with each passing year. \nWinner of Best Actor at the Sydney Theatre Critics Award and Sustainability Award at the Adelaide Fringe 2024\, The End of Winter is about loss and resilience. But it’s also about the places one can search for cold weather—places that can be reached via public transport\, or a little imagination… \nThe End of Winter is a moving\, evocative love letter to winter\, written in the unrelenting Australian summer. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 9 January 2025. SUMMARY:Dramaturgs &: In conversation with Directors
DESCRIPTION:DRAMATURGS & is a capsule series of roundtable conversations centering the work of and relationship between dramaturgs and their artistic collaborators. Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe third of this year’s series is DRAMATURGS & DIRECTORS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. What might directors want from dramaturgs as collaborators? How is the dramaturgical thinking a dramaturg offers different from that of a director? Can a dramaturg’s contribution reveal blindspots in the director’s vision and what happens then? \nJoin us for this thought-provoking conversation facilitated by Cherilyn Woo and bring your questions for our exciting panel of artists including Kok Heng Leun\, Huzir Sulaiman and Sim Yan Ying.

SUMMARY:ITI Presents: Metamorphosis
DESCRIPTION:Intercultural Theatre Institute presents Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Metamorphosis\, directed by Aarne Neeme and performed by the ITI graduating class of 2024. This gripping retelling of Franz Kafka’s iconic novella melds abstract physical theatre and psychological drama with elements of dark comedy. \nThe story follows Gregor Samsa\, a young man who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a giant insect. As he grapples with his new grotesque form\, Gregor’s once-supportive family begins to unravel\, revealing deep-seated fears and hidden resentments. Set in a claustrophobic atmosphere with minimalist staging\, the play explores themes of alienation\, identity\, and the crushing weight of societal expectations. \nThis adaptation of Metamorphosis remains faithful to Kafka’s original work while showcasing Berkoff’s unique approach to theatre. The result is a production that not only reflects on the fragility of identity and the human condition but also resonates with contemporary audiences facing the pressures of modern society.

SUMMARY:Raga 2024: MAAS

This play aims to discuss these existential questions in the eyes of a figure steeped in Hindu mythology\, Ram of the Axe who is also widely believed to be one of the first disciples of ancient indian martial arts. Audience will take a journey through time with Ram as he explores complex concepts such as the guru-disciple relationship\, redemption\, and sacrifices in the path to achieve cosmic balance. \nThe Indian martial arts of Silambam and Kalaripayattu will play a vital role in the play. Recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of Singapore\, techniques of Silambam will be used in the choreography of the multiple fight sequences in the play. SUMMARY:Playwrights Breaking Things
DESCRIPTION:The four writers of Centre 42’s Playwright’s Professional Development Residency have spent the past couple of months reading\, writing\, and thinking about what it means to break things: old habits\, the fear of writing\, new ground\, comfortable forms… even the play itself. How do they break with familiar ways of entering and exploring a play\, and what fresh insight into their processes can that unlock? \nCome join us for a reading of some texts followed by a chat with the residents\, as they share some of their personal writing discoveries from the first chapter of their two year residency\, facilitated by residency leads Jean Tay and Joel Tan.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine)
DESCRIPTION:Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine) is an immersive and interactive experience combining poetry\, sound\, and light. Part of “Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Interplay” and Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary celebrations\, this event celebrates the rich histories and communities of Waterloo Street. \nWaterloo Street represents Singapore’s diverse heritage\, and Cor Machina explores the connections between communities and the arts\, symbolised by the typewriter as a relic with the poet as its beating heart. The typewriter’s mechanical clatter echoes modern life’s relentless grind\, yet within this noise\, there is beauty—a reminder that even in the machine\, the human heart creates with hope. \nCor Machina captures this playfully\, by inviting participants to explore these themes through creation. Audiences first enter an installation of pre-made prompts that draws from personal\, communal memories and stories of the street. They’re invited to send in an order for a poem to the Proletariat Poetry Factory\, which becomes a meta memory machine. Poets\, musicians\, and artists create new memories and stories from their inputs\, blending them with the street’s past. \nThe work evokes collective remembrance and celebrates the street’s heritage in a contemporary context. The intent is to spark meaningful conversations\, weaving together past and present\, individual and collective experience. This performance is also in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, serving to commemorate our placemaking and memory making on Waterloo Street.

SUMMARY:The Sisters Soong
DESCRIPTION:The Actors Studio unveils its biggest production of 2024. Written by Joe Hasham OAM and directed by Dato’ Dr Faridah Merican\, The Sisters Soong is a brand-new play that relates the story of the famous and somewhat infamous sisters; three of the most influential siblings of 20th century China. \nBorn in China and educated in America\, “Big Sister” Ai-ling married banker H.H. Kung\, who later became Finance Minister\, “Red Sister” Ching-ling married the Father of Modern China\, Sun Yat-sen\, and “Little Sister” Mei-ling married Chiang Kai-shek. \nIn this modern retelling that alternates between fact and fiction\, the playwright has taken some artistic license and cleverly woven this family saga that spans a century with the help of a narrator. \nThe Sisters Soong will be brought to life by an award-winning cast with choreography by Kenny Shim\, costuming by Beatrice Looi\, music and arrangement by Tan Zhi Yong against a set by Scenographer Yusman Mokhtar and live music under the baton of Maestro Lee Kok Leong. \nAbout TAS Seni Teater Rakyat\nSince its inception in 1989\, The Actors Studio has been presenting groundbreaking theatre in Malaysia. In 2006\, it created The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat arm to bridge the gap between the arts and the people in line with the National Arts and Culture Department’s efforts to ‘merakyatkan seni’. The Actors Studio just celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019. \nAbout klpac Connect\nklpac Connect is an access and development initiative supported by Yayasan Sime Darby aimed at improving access to the arts through various amenities and programmes for families with young children\, students / schools\, persons with disabilities\, talents and the general public. SUMMARY:Playing With Fire by Checkpoint Theatre
DESCRIPTION:With climate catastrophe on the horizon\, why would anyone want to work in oil and gas? \nHaving secured interviews with several employees of the petrochemical industry\, this is the question a determined young writer expects to answer. Instead\, Sue Rozario finds herself uncovering a troubling web of connections between the oil and gas industry\, Singapore’s modern development\, and her own family history. As she delves deeper into her research\, she is forced to confront layers of hidden truths – not only of her interviewees’ personal and professional lives\, but also of her own. \nPlaying With Fire shares a profoundly human look into Singapore’s industrial past and present\, while placing the complexities of a just energy transition under a microscope. \nCheyenne Alexandria Phillips’ sharp\, sophisticated writing shines in this new play that interrogates the relationships between people and industry with empathy and nuance. Claire Wong’s skilful direction anchors an exceptional cast\, comprising Rebecca Ashley Dass\, Cheryl Lee\, Gosteloa Spancer\, Nora Samosir\, and Rafaat Haji Hamzah\, who bring the complexities and tensions of this thrilling work to life. \nTimely and compelling\, Playing With Fire examines how we have become implicated in the climate crisis\, and asks what it would take to break out of it. \n  \nDuration: Approximately 90 minutes \nRating: G

SUMMARY:Open Call for Writers – Sound Plot: ULU
DESCRIPTION:Sound Plot is Centre 42’s audio plays series\, each edition drawing on a certain geographic area in Singapore. This edition\, produced in collaboration with the NTU Museum\, zooms in on Jurong West and its surrounding area\, where the university is located. \nThis is an invitation for two writers to respond through audio drama to this fascinating area\, guided by the curatorial prompt “Ulu”. Selected writers will need to be available for an intensive 3-week script development phase in October 2024\, and will work with a director during the recording and production process in November & December 2024. Audio production will be done in collaboration with Artwave Studio\, and slated for release online in January 2025. \nThis is a paid opportunity\, and commissioned writers will receive $1\,000 each. \n\n\n\n\nTO APPLY\n\n\n\n\nApplication period runs from 5 August 2024 (12pm) to 15 September 2024 (12pm). Please complete this online form to submit the following: \n\nYour updated CV. Highlight your experience in writing for / working in the audio medium.\nA writing sample of no more than 10 pages. This should be from an existing stage play\, audio play\, or screenplay.\nYour proposal for a 15-minute audio play\, which must:\n\nrespond to the curatorial prompt below\ntell us about the curiosity\, fascination\, or other impulse that draws you to this work\, and how you imagine this play might delve into these ideas\ndescribe your ideas for the narrative\, characters\, and world that the play takes place in\nbe no more than 2 pages.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCURATORIAL PROMPT\n\n\n\n\nULU \nJurong West tends to be the butt of our “ulu” jokes. After all\, it’s where we seem to tuck away things we’d rather not see: cemeteries\, a man-made island heaving with chemicals\, and secretive military bases. \nBut if we look beneath this industrial veneer – always building\, always reclaiming – what other stories might we find? Here thrum large swathes of undeveloped secondary forest\, rewilding over the memories of the gambier plantations that kickstarted Singapore’s endless development. Here\, the coast hugs the mouth of the Straits of Johor\, where we can still imagine our deep connections to ancient kingdoms. Here lies a large university town\, filled with utopian architecture that tells a story about a world that could be so much better and kinder to the earth. And here lie the hopes and dreams of new families looking to build lives in one of the fastest-growing residential zones on the island\, each built-to-order flat remaking the “ulu” face of the Western region. \nWe invite you to write a play that reckons in any way with these ideas. Whether you’re curious about the many layers of history in Jurong West; have a story to tell about the diverse range of people who live\, work\, and play here; or have a speculative tale about its future\, we want to hear your ideas! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSCHEDULE\n\n\n\n\nThe turnaround for these audio plays will be quick and intensive. Selected writers will need to be available for the phases outlined below and commit to the duration of the project. \n5 August – 15 September: \n\nOpen Call for Proposals\nPrepare your documents and apply via this form\n\n20 September: \n\nSelected writers will be notified\n\n1 October – 21 October: \n\nScript development intensive\nWriters will need to be available to turn in drafts of their script\, engage in discussions with script dramaturg\, director\, sound designer and producer\n\n27 October – 10 December:\nAudio pre and production phase \n\nWriters will need to be ready for script edits\, rehearsals with voice actors and director\, and participate in the recording process\n\n6 January – 17 February: \n\nAudio post-production phase: reviewing of edits and final publishing\n\n20 January – 28 February \n\nLaunch of Audio Plays\, starting from 20 January 2025

SUMMARY:Home / 家 — A Sharing of Intercultural Performance Processes by Macarena Losada and Jacklyn Kuah
DESCRIPTION:Join us at ITI for an exclusive sharing session about the creative process of Home / 家 / La ropa sucia se lava / À la maison\, a work-in-progress\, cross-cultural performance project led by Macarena Losada. The event features a showcase of audiovisual materials and a discussion of ideas that shape the work\, presented by artist-scholars Losada and Jacklyn Kuah. \nKey ideas and takeaways:\n\n\nCultural Contact Zones — Where the narratives of cities and biographical material are  intertwined \n\n\nTranslation for the Stage — Contribution to the intercultural process by expanding meanings and representations of the text\, originally in English\, into Chinese and Spanish \n\n\nEmbodiment — In relation to the “Body as Territory” theory\, drawing upon the idea that the “female body is an extension of the territory inhabited”\, wherein history and suffering are reflected in our physical narratives \n\n\n  \nAbout the work:\nHome / 家 / La ropa sucia se lava / À la maison is an ongoing devising process that encompasses collaborative writing\, remote rehearsals\, and in-person staging processes. It unfolds as a collaborative effort uniting creators from Chile\, France\, and Singapore. The work explores the intersections of women from diverse cultures and the sense of cultural identity. The central conflict emerges as the character grapples with aligning familial beliefs and the expectations of assimilating into a foreign culture. It also delves into themes of gender equality\, cultural identity\, and humanity\, positioned within self-fiction and physical theatre.

SUMMARY:Desert Blooms – The Dawn of Queer Singaporean Theatre
DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS\nAfter a riveting first staging in 2019\, Desert Blooms – The Dawn of Queer Singaporean Theatre  by Ng Yi-Sheng makes a triumphant return with a restaging at the Wild Rice Theatre in Funan for one show only. Restaged in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, Desert Blooms is a lecture-performance that recounts the history of queer and queer-allied voices in Singapore theatre during the tumultuous decade of 1985-1995\, showcasing the works of playwrights such as Eleanor Wong\, Russell Heng and many more. \nTraverse through many firsts portrayed on stage – the first portrayals of a transgender woman’s struggles in “Lest the Demons Get to Me”\, the first lesbian protagonist in “Mergers and Accusations” – all of which opened new conversations for queer characters to enter society’s consciousness. \n\n\n\n\n“Queerness first dared to speak its name publicly on stage\, and the newspapers—some begrudgingly\, some opportunistically—followed suit.” \n– Alfian Sa’at\, Review of the 2019 staging. \n\n\n\n\nFeaturing the talents of Yap Yi Kai\, Medli Dorothea Loo\, Izzul Irfan and Coco Wang Ling\, with renowned theatremaker Tan Shou Chen returning to direct\, Desert Blooms is a fascinating and well-researched look at how queer voices bloomed in an era once known as a “cultural desert”. Look back on Singapore’s storied past where arts\, politics and society were undergoing a profound transformation\, and how it shapes tomorrow’s narratives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRESERVING YOUR SEAT\n\n\n\n\nDesert Blooms is being staged as part of Centre 42’s fundraising efforts in conjunction with our 10th anniversary.
