SUMMARY:STATEMENT PIECE
DESCRIPTION:  \nTwo weeks after a loss that reverberates through the nation\, a young gallerist prepares for her first exhibition. Lily has endured constant pressure from her formidable boss\, spent countless hours on research\, revved up the public for a buzzworthy show – everything for the perfect opening that will cement her name in the art world. The months of suffering are about to pay off at last. But when the final painting arrives\, hand-delivered by the reclusive Gopal Rangaraj himself\, she is horrified. With the entire exhibition – and her fledgling career – on the line\, even the surprise visit from her artist girlfriend Marjia can’t cushion the gravity of the situation. As three different worldviews collide\, how much should be sacrificed in the name of Art? \nFollowing the sold-out success of Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes (2023)\, critically acclaimed playwright Myle Yan Tay returns with Statement Piece\, a new play that continually shifts the lens on how the beliefs and choices that push us apart are often born from a yearning for acceptance and community. His signature blend of sharp humour and acute insight is dexterously brought to the stage by director Claire Wong with nuance\, elegance\, and a sure hand. \nHuzir Sulaiman ably takes on dual roles as dramaturg and performer\, starring alongside Rusydina Afiqah and Tricia Tan in this powerfully vivid work. Statement Piece interrogates the purpose of art in this country\, the limits of our ambitions\, and the legacies we leave.

Can we find the key to preventing an impending disaster? \nCreated by Terrapin in collaboration with Japanese artists Kouhei Narumi and Ayami Sasaki\, Goldfish blends stunning design with imaginative puppetry. A unique theatre experience\, Goldfish invites families to imagine new possibilities in an uncertain world.

SUMMARY:Queering the Play: A Very Specific Timeline from One Gay Jew
DESCRIPTION:What makes a play queer? Must it feature primarily queer characters? Does it necessarily centre on timeless queer narratives— coming out\, oppression\, political change? Or is it enough that the play\, like all queers\, tries to find a new way of seeing and being in the world— a play that builds theatrical worlds that resist orthodoxy\, authority\, and received binaries? Join visiting Writer in Residence Sean Dunnington in conversation with playwright Joel Tan as they pry open these questions\, featuring readings from Sean’s plays that reflect the shifting sensibilities and approaches to queerness in his work over the years.

We’ll examine the audience’s role in recognizing these substitutions and experiment with how to teach them to understand the play. \nThis is part of a workshop series by our visiting resident playwright Sean Dunnington. It invites playwrights to be curious about theatricality. Each session dives into a specific element of this conceptual spell\, blending discussion\, hands-on activities\, performance\, and experimentation.

SUMMARY:Huayi 2025: Human Condition VIII
DESCRIPTION:After a more than two-decade long domestic run\, celebrated Taiwanese arts icon Wu Nien-jen brings his acclaimed Human Condition theatre series to Huayi for its Singapore premiere. The well-loved series has been enjoyed by over half a million Taiwanese theatregoers so far\, and Human Condition VIII is the latest eagerly anticipated instalment. \nHuman Condition VIII tells the story of Mingcan\, a retiree who finds himself adrift and without a purpose in life. His status as a respected patriarch has long disappeared as his adult children have their own families and lives to deal with. Unable to contribute to the economy and unneeded by his family\, Mingcan questions his self-worth as his dignity slowly fades with each listless\, monotonous day. Just as he feels that he has struck rock-bottom\, he instead strikes the lottery jackpot\, and immediately finds himself to be of interest to his family once more. Mingcan feels respected\, needed\, wanted. But is this unexpected windfall a stroke of luck or a harbinger of misfortune? \nStarting in 2000\, the Human Condition series shines an empathetic spotlight on the day-to-day stories of everyday Taiwanese people who strive to make the best out of what they have in their lives. Presented by Greenray Theatre Company\, the series has continued to garner enthusiastic support and enjoy great appeal since its inception. It has become the first taste of theatre for many across Taiwan\, with each instalment of the series rapidly selling out within days of their launches. \nThe first comedy of the series\, Human Condition VIII is a humorous and poignant tale of masculine self-worth that features an acclaimed cast that includes theatre multi-hyphenate Chen Hsi-Cheng\, and Golden Bell Award winners Wang Juan and Yang Li-yin. \nPlaywright and director Wu Nien-jen is one of the most prolific and respected names in Taiwanese cinema. Debuting in 2001\, the Human Condition series is his blockbuster foray into theatre\, which had been seen and loved by over half a million Taiwanese theatergoers\, and earned him the prestigious National Cultural Award.

SUMMARY:Huayi 2025: The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun
DESCRIPTION:A tale of 20th-century voyagers seeking their destinies\, set against the elegant beauty of traditional Nanyin music. Co-produced with Siong Leng Musical Association\, The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun presents a musical experience of discovery\, courage and determination. \nThree women leave China and set sail for Southeast Asia in the early 20th century\, their voyage echoing the journey of Wang Zhaojun\, one of the legendary Four Beauties of ancient China. Finding themselves on a cargo ship\, they are inescapably embroiled in sinister struggles for power as a mysterious man reveals secrets they have yet to understand. What will their destinies hold? What connection exists between these three women braving a tumultuous sea and Wang Zhaojun\, who rode beyond the borders of Western Han into the Xiongnu empire? Do the fragments of loss and sorrow in Nanyin music symbolise the life stories of these modern women\, or do they inspire courage to explore new horizons? \n  \nThis fusion of traditional Nanyin music and contemporary theatre will delight both Nanyin purists and new audiences. Siong Leng breaks new ground in this collaboration with celebrated Taiwanese playwright Katherine Hui-ling Chou and Taiwanese director Lee Yi Hsiu\, who is known for his innovative direction of traditional music performances. \nThe Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun features authentic traditional Nanyin music harking back half a millennium that narrates the legend of Wang Zhaojun\, with additional music composed by Siong Leng’s music director Ng Kang Kee. The production showcases the principal artists of Siong Leng\, and a skilled ensemble of Eastern and Western classical musicians performing together with Singapore actors Ang Xiao Ting\, Jodi Chan and Hang Qian Chou.

SUMMARY:Kali- the timeless goddess
DESCRIPTION:This traditional Indian dance and theatre solo performance by Soumee De reimagines the origins of life through the lens of Mother Kali\, the goddess in Indian mythology who symbolizes transformation and governs time (known as kala in Sanskrit). It explores the journey from birth to death\, from earth to dust\, and from ignorance to wisdom. \nAccording to Kali-darshan (the philosophy of Kali)\, followers believe that life itself was conceived through the bodily functions of Mother Kali. The name Kali is derived from the feminine form of Kala (time)\, signifying the ever-changing nature of existence—where time births\, sustains\, and eventually dissolves all things. Kali embodies liberation (moksha)\, and her transformative energy dissolves injustice\, granting ultimate freedom.

SUMMARY:Rickshaw Boy
DESCRIPTION:Rickshaw Boy narrates the life of Xiangzi\, a rickshaw puller in Beiping during the Republic of China era. A strong and ambitious young man from the countryside\, Xiangzi dreams of building an ideal life through his own efforts. However\, fate repeatedly thwarts his aspirations\, and despite his hard work and determination\, his circumstances remain unchanged. In the context of modern society\, Xiangzi’s helplessness and confusion reflect the struggles of modern workers caught in similar cycles of hardship. \nLao She is widely celebrated as a “Master of Language”\, with his works both entertaining and deeply rooted in the local culture of Beijing. Rickshaw Boy is among Lao She’s most renowned masterpieces. It presents a tragic story laced with humour\, using Beijing dialect and expressions to vividly portray the resilience\, pride\, and underlying pain of his characters. Director Fang Xu\, often regarded as a “Lao She specialist\,” has adapted Lao She’s works for the stage numerous times with his distinctive expressive and interpretative style. In this production\, Fang Xu reimagines the original text through a contemporary lens\, incorporating modern aesthetics into the stage design\, lighting\, music\, and visual composition. \nWhile the tragic struggles of the rickshaw pullers portrayed in Rickshaw Boy may seem distant to contemporary audiences\, the story also offers a compelling psychological portrait of Xiangzi himself. It delves into the conflict between his ideals and the harsh realities\, alongside the confusion\, frustration\, and helplessness that permeate his inner world – emotions that remain profoundly relatable even today. \nAnother standout feature of this adaptation is its all-male cast\, which boldly challenges traditional gender roles while employing a non-linear\, visually-driven narrative structure to depict Xiangzi’s tragic journey. This innovative approach departs from a straightforward retelling\, offering a rich and layered interpretation. \nOne of the female characters\, Tigress\, is portrayed by Zhao Zhen\, a nationally acclaimed Chinese actor with extensive theatre experience\, who brings the role of to life with a commanding portrayal of her domineering and sharp-tongued personality. Another female character\, Xiao Fu Zi\, is portrayed by Ren Yubin\, who is trained in traditional opera Dan roles. He delivers a poignant performance\, capturing the character’s sorrow and timidity with nuance. Siqin Gaowa\, an actress renowned for her iconic portrayal of Tigress in the film adaptation of Rickshaw Boy (1982)\, serves as the artistic advisor for this production. \nThis marks the firs-ever staging of Rickshaw Boy in Singapore and Fang Xu’s debut at the Esplanade. The critically acclaimed all-male cast\, which has captivated audiences in China\, will perform in this groundbreaking production\, making it a must-see event!

SUMMARY:TOOLS: A Workshop Series for Playwrights Exploring Theatricality - Stage Directions
DESCRIPTION:Tools is a workshop series by our visiting resident playwright Sean Dunnington for playwrights curious about theatricality—the unique magic of theatre that invites audiences to “believe” what they see on stage is true-to-life\, even while knowing it’s not real (to an extent). Each session dives into a specific element of this conceptual spell\, blending discussion\, hands-on activities\, performance\, and experimentation. \nJoin us for the first workshop this January which will look at Stage Directions. In this workshop\, we’ll explore what stage directions can do beyond blocking and lighting cues. How can they become indispensable to the play? Can they describe things that never appear? Should they be interpreted as literal\, tonal\, or something else entirely? Can they dare be ignored? Through examples and practice\, we’ll test how much stage directions can shape a play. \nThis workshop is suitable for playwrights/writers who are engaged with/thinking about craft at a serious level.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: The Troupe by Birds Migrant Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Language\nIn English\, with some Bahasa Indonesia\, Bengali and Burmese \nAccessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows. \n  \nWith a good cast giving their all onstage\, an unflinching\, objectively written story that speaks truth to the limitations of being a migrant in Singapore\, and imaginative script that explores the pitfalls of love and family\, Foreign Bodies was a rare\, big-hearted\, honest glimpse into migrant life\, by migrant workers with a story to tell.\n \n— Bakchormeeboy.com on Foreign Bodies \n\nPlease welcome The Troupe! They travel around towns and villages with their show. They perform stories about farmers\, refugees\, students\, politicians and aid workers—people in search of a better life. As they stage their play\, they discover that what they perform may be closer to home than they realise. \nBirds Migrant Theatre returns to the Fringe with another important play that focuses on current world issues—from war to the refugee crisis—and how these tragedies pose questions to our common humanity. The Troupe looks at how people who are affected by displacement strive for a more positive future—not just for themselves\, but for their families and community. Will suffering and desperation bring out the best in people—or the worst? What is the price of compassion? \n \nForeign Bodies is a well-told story that dramatises the legal precarity migrant workers may face in Singapore. It does so without resorting to mere sympathy or an easy us-versus-them set-up\, choosing instead to let audiences into its protagonists’ dilemmas.\n \n—The Straits Times Life on Foreign Bodies \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after the 5pm performance on 12 January 2025\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com by 6 December 2024.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Commission Continua by Noma Mini
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \nCommission Continua is a powerful and affecting production. Miyambo succeeds in delivering a complex concept with care. \n— Nkgopoleng Moloi\, The Critter \nBright Maluleke—played by Tony Bonani Miyambo (Kafka’s Ape)—is an employee who copies and archives official documents from the commissions. He does his best just to stick to his brief and ignore the content of the files—but this proves difficult when faced with all these pages giving an account of the most critical and catastrophic moments in South Africa’s history. In the frugal setting of a photocopier\, a microphone\, and a loop station\, he begins to give vent to his annoyance with South African society’s struggle for real change and reconciliation. \nBonani Miyambo is terrific and deservedly gets one of the strongest ovations of the night \n— Teresa Guerreiro\, Culture Whisper \na devastating one-hander that emphasises how the culpability for historical and recent crimes perpetrated against the South African people has become buried under mountains of paperwork. \n— Chris Thurman\, Business Live \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 18 January 2025. SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: WePushTheSky by Qabila
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows. \n… part history lesson\, part culinary exploration\, and part feminist fable\n \n— Karthik Ranganathan\, Citizen Matters \nThe play is a triumph of storytelling and is exceptionally brave.. \n—Venkat Srinivasan\, Sabrang India \nWePushTheSky is an interactive solo performance that weaves together food\, song\, story\, myth\, and history. Where personal stories meet community histories\, survival stories of the Karbala entwine with songs of the Ramayana\, and anecdotes from the past confront desires about the future. A play that reflects on an urgent social reality of our present times—friendships that have been lost\, gained\, or have endured amidst increasing shrill political rhetoric across the world. \nWritten and performed by Nisha Abdulla and directed by Ujwala Rao\, WePushTheSky centres friendship and feminist solidarities as an antidote to the politics of hate. The play invites the audience to listen deeply to another’s reality and elevates listening to the act of an assertive ally. WePushTheSky has toured widely to warm receptions in India\, performed at the Feminist Theatre Festival in Jenin\, Occupied Palestine\, and has been invited to perform at the 15th Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) International Forum in Bangkok\, Thailand. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 16 January 2025. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com by 6 December 2024.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Dancing with the Ghost of My Child by Noor Effendy Ibrahim\, Ruby Jayaseelan & NAFA
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \na unique approach\, rather bold and different \n—Natya Vichara on Purushi by Ruby Jayaseelan \nI know [Effendy’s work] will express a kind of pain and anger acceptable in the performance space\, a pain and anger that is often delegitimised or minimised or considered “inappropriate” elsewhere—and I cherish his work for that reason. \n—Corrie Tan\, Jom Media on ANAK by Very Shy Gurl by fendy \nI myself am an absolute abyss. \n—Antonin Artaud \nIn the beginning\, God created despair\, for men to find hope within. Someone heard someone else say this somewhere before\, sometime back. But no one knows who\, when and where. It must have been God herself who had said this through some men. Only God could be that smart to tease men into such futility. And here\, men find themselves being baited into their own despair. \nConceptualised and directed by Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Ruby Jayaseelan\, Dancing with the Ghost of My Child is an experimental physical theatre performance written by Elvira Foo Jing  Yun\, Gregory Kong Ka-Ee\, Lex (Lee Zhi Qi)\, and Liu Qintong (Amelia) exploring vulnerability\, trauma and the desire to heal. It is devised by students from the BA (Honours) in Performance Making programme at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \nCo-presented with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (a founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore). \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 10 January 2025. DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows. \n  \n★★★★★\n… complex\, entertaining\, emotionally varied but crystal clear\n \n— Theatre Travels \n★★★★★\nIt’s a bravura performance from Jane Phegan…a theatrical experience of bonewarming depth and of hope.\n \n— Reviews by Judith \nWill climate change erase winter\, leaving it to exist only in fairy tales\, paintings\, and historical accounts? In hot\, bushfire-prone Australia\, the winters are increasingly warmer and shorter with each passing year. \nWinner of Best Actor at the Sydney Theatre Critics Award and Sustainability Award at the Adelaide Fringe 2024\, The End of Winter is about loss and resilience. But it’s also about the places one can search for cold weather—places that can be reached via public transport\, or a little imagination… \nThe End of Winter is a moving\, evocative love letter to winter\, written in the unrelenting Australian summer. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 9 January 2025. SUMMARY:Dramaturgs &: In conversation with Directors
DESCRIPTION:DRAMATURGS & is a capsule series of roundtable conversations centering the work of and relationship between dramaturgs and their artistic collaborators. Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe third of this year’s series is DRAMATURGS & DIRECTORS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. What might directors want from dramaturgs as collaborators? How is the dramaturgical thinking a dramaturg offers different from that of a director? Can a dramaturg’s contribution reveal blindspots in the director’s vision and what happens then? \nJoin us for this thought-provoking conversation facilitated by Cherilyn Woo and bring your questions for our exciting panel of artists including Kok Heng Leun\, Huzir Sulaiman and Sim Yan Ying.

SUMMARY:ITI Presents: Metamorphosis
DESCRIPTION:Intercultural Theatre Institute presents Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Metamorphosis\, directed by Aarne Neeme and performed by the ITI graduating class of 2024. This gripping retelling of Franz Kafka’s iconic novella melds abstract physical theatre and psychological drama with elements of dark comedy. \nThe story follows Gregor Samsa\, a young man who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a giant insect. As he grapples with his new grotesque form\, Gregor’s once-supportive family begins to unravel\, revealing deep-seated fears and hidden resentments. Set in a claustrophobic atmosphere with minimalist staging\, the play explores themes of alienation\, identity\, and the crushing weight of societal expectations. \nThis adaptation of Metamorphosis remains faithful to Kafka’s original work while showcasing Berkoff’s unique approach to theatre. The result is a production that not only reflects on the fragility of identity and the human condition but also resonates with contemporary audiences facing the pressures of modern society.
