SUMMARY:Dramaturgs & Producers
DESCRIPTION:DRAMATURGS & is a new capsule series of roundtable conversations centering the work of and relationship between dramaturgs and their artistic collaborators. Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe first conversation kicking off this series is DRAMATURGS & PRODUCERS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. What brings a producer and a dramaturg into a project together and how do they navigate their positionalities in an artistic collaboration? As multi-hyphenate practitioners who identify with both roles\, how do they draw boundaries or ‘switch hats’\, and is that necessary? \nJoin us in this exciting discussion facilitated by Juliet Chia\, and hear from a panel of luminous producers Michele Lim\, Melissa Lim and Fezhah Maznan.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival presents THOM PAIN (based on nothing) by Edith Podesta\, Yarra Ileto & Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Australia & Singapore)
DESCRIPTION:“Thom Pain is at bottom a surreal meditation on the empty promises life makes\, the way experience never lives up to the weird and awesome fact of being. But it is also\, in its odd\, bewitching beauty\, an affirmation of life’s worth.” \n—The New York Times \n  \nThom Pain is trying to save his life to save your life\, in that order. \nFilled with biting humour\, desire\, and lost innocence\, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated show THOM PAIN (based on nothing) is one ordinary man’s extraordinary search through the wreckage of his life. \n  \nHailed as “astonishing …a small masterpiece” by The New York Times\, this insightful\, at times surreal\, production catalogues the eternal agonies of the human condition in wit and one last-ditch plea for empathy and enlightenment. \n  \nDirected by Edith Podesta and choreographed by Yarra Ileto\, THOM PAIN (based on nothing) is performed by students from the BA (Hons) in Performance Making programme at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \n  \nPost-show dialogue on 19 January 2024\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com before 15 December 2023.

SUMMARY:Symbiocene
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, a mysterious and highly disruptive force ruptures the boundaries between humans\, plants\, and animals. Under the banner of Expedisi Harapan Sembilan\, three outcasts – a world-weary park ranger\, a psychic\, and a fungal traveller – are sent into the epicentre of this rupture\, Penang Botanical Gardens\, to investigate. \nWhat will they find and how will it change them? \nSymbiocene is an ecopunk tale of love\, grief\, and a wild re-imagination of a world where humans\, plants\, and animals live together symbiotically. \nCoined by the Australian philosopher\, Glenn Albrecht\, Symbiocene is a period of re-integration between humans and the rest of nature\, a time of living together and companionship. In the play\, the Symbiocene is imagined as a world populated by human-plant-animals creatures where language and meaning are deconstructed and reconstructed. \nInspired by the genesis of the cyberpunk genre\, we coined a term “ecopunk”. “Eco” as in ecology\, the relations between living things and their habitats. “Punk” as in a defiance against the status quo. In our ecopunk world\, we follow a group of outcasts as they navigate a world that re-centres all living things as equal.

DESCRIPTION:“The Aziz family reunites in New York City. Nobody leaves their baggage behind.” \nAfter graduating university on a government scholarship\, Shereen Rahman didn’t return to Kuala Lumpur and settled down in New York City instead. \nIt’s been a few years\, and she has a secret. And her uncle Zul\, and his wife Juita. They’re hoping to spend time with Shereen and her uncle Ray\, a fellow transplant to the city. \nAs the days pass\, it becomes obvious that everyone has their own reason to come on the trip. SUMMARY:Pop Group: An Improvised Musical
DESCRIPTION:You know pop music. You’ve watched musicals. You might have even caught a couple of pop musicals. But what about an unscripted pop musical? \nIn the 90s and early 2000s\, boy bands and girl groups reigned supreme. Everyone knew their music\, everyone had a favourite member\, and everyone had an opinion on which pop group was the best. These bands were world famous. But behind the saccharine pop ditties and carefully manicured looks were young artistes struggling with the demands of superstardom. And for every band that made it\, there were a hundred more which fell by the wayside. \nJoin Les Musicables as we explore the ins and outs of pop superstardom in an hour-long improvised musical that will tickle your funny bone and warm your heart\, with music and lyrics completely made up on the spot\, inspired by suggestions from the audience.

SUMMARY:Happy Indian Women
DESCRIPTION:Being a woman is tough. Being an Indian woman is even tougher. We must be independent\, but not too independent that we tarnish the family name. We must be strong enough to withstand the constant scrutiny that our bodies\, minds and personalities are subject to. We’re too dark\, too short\, too thin\, too educated\, too loud\, too much. Our friends still ask us if we speak ‘Indian’. Or worse\, they assume we are Indian just because we are a certain shade of brown.   \n  \nWritten by The Necessary Stage’s Associate Artist Sindhura Kalidas\, Happy Indian Women is a verbatim theatre production that questions the assumptions we make about the diverse South Asian diaspora in Singapore. Based on interviews with 20 women and non-binary people from various backgrounds\, the play interweaves text\, sound and multimedia to celebrate their honest and tender stories about faith\, friendship and family.

On their mission to save their world\, they venture into the woods. \nBut their path is booby-trapped with blips\, as they get entrapped by Daydreams\, ensnared by Desires\, and enslaved by Wishes. SUMMARY:SOUL of Odyssey - Multi-sensory\, Multimedia\, Multi-genre
DESCRIPTION:KL Shakespeare Players and the Hiroshi Koike Bridge Project of Japan announce the staging of SOUL of Odyssey an international collaboration from 26 October to 29 October at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre (dpac).  \nThis multi-sensory work\, based on the Greek classic by Homer\, devises and reimagines the hero’s journey and his attempts to rise from the ashes of war\, chaos\, and battles with deities. It questions and explores how human beings react to forces perceived to be out of their control. Or as in the proverbial question: “What happens to ants when elephants fight?”  \nWhen asked what informs his productions with their constant shifts of sensory focus\, Hiroshi Koike\, the artistic director of the production\, says that he wants to “shock and inspire”\, especially the young\, to imagine possibilities.  \nSOUL of Odyssey weaves different performative practices\, traditions and elements–dialogue\, storytelling\, movement\, dance\, live videos\, live music\, songs\, and chants–wrapped together with the aesthetic vision to create an integrated work that harmonizes sensory perceptions. In short\, a multimedia\, multisensory experience that informs holistically without privileging the intellect. Actors will speak in Bahasa Melayu\, Chinese\, English and Japanese. \nThis production is suitable for all ages.

SUMMARY:New Scripts Garage Nov 2023: Malay-language Edition
DESCRIPTION:The New Scripts Garage is a regular offer of dramaturgical support for new scripts\, convened every other month\, with low barriers to entry. On a regular basis\, we open our inboxes for script submissions from playwrights seeking dramaturgical support for their work. \nFor the November 2023 cycle\, we are collaborating with Teater Ekamatra to offer a Malay-language edition\, that will accept up to eight scripts through an Open Call. \n\n\nThis programme prioritises writer development over polish and aims to get the writer excited to work on the next draft of their script\, with a clearer sense of where to go. \nScript Eligibility: \n\nWe are accepting plays in the Malay-language or predominantly (at least 80%) in the Malay-language for this special edition. Translations are welcome where available.\nWe are not accepting straight adaptations of other work (e.g. novels\, films)\, but will accept adaptations with a clear creative\, re-inventive\, and/or radical approach.\nWe prioritise completed drafts of full length plays and shorter plays. We may consider partially complete drafts of scripts with extensive scenes.
