SUMMARY:Sound Plot: True/South\, A Collection of Audio Plays
DESCRIPTION:𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁: 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲/𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 is a collection of audio plays responding to the geographical area of Tanjong Pagar/Pasir Panjang where the Singapore Art Museum currently resides. With audio design by Artwave Studio\, the plays first premiered as part of Singapore Art Week\, each with an audio spot installation at the museum and now available online as well. \nThe three short audio plays (of which the latter 2 were selected through our Open Call) are: \nSea Song  \nAdvisory: Contains some coarse language \nLaurie and Scott settle into their new expatriate lives at Sentosa Cove only to discover that not all is as it seems. Beneath the ostentatious luxuries of modern Singapore lie the sea and the land seething in their grief; and as Laurie’s connection to them grows she discovers that this loss is collective and communal. \nPlaywright: Joel Tan\nDirector: Cherilyn Woo\nActors: Julie Wee\, Daniel Jenkins\, Ching Shu Yi\, Serene Chen\, Tysha Khan\, Irsyad Dawood\, Joel Tan \nGhazal of the Banana Tree’s Heart \n\n\nA solitary banana tree remains on the shore\, the sole survivor amongst its compatriots\, lost to the need for the space they occupied; a lone banana tree that is the last repository of the stories of those shores – of fishermen\, turtles and the sea itself. Alone it sings the same refrain – but who listens? \nPlaywright: Danial Matin\nDirector: Grace Kalaiselvi\nActors: Suhaili Safari & Shahid Nasheer \nFragments of a Singaporean Hainanese \nAt the opening of a new exhibition on the Hainanese community in Singapore\, memories are excavated through the stories of three Hainanese immigrants of different generations\, their connections to an island they left for another\, and the sea that connects them. \nPlaywright: Wang Liansheng\nDirector: Lim Shien Hian\nActors: Jalyn Han\, Hang Qian Chou\, Rino Junior John\, Mitchell Fang

SUMMARY:Titoudao [G]
DESCRIPTION:A Glorious Masterpiece of Singapore Theatre Returns \nBest Original Script – Life! Theatre Awards 2001\nBest Production Design of the Year – Life! Theatre Awards 2001\nPlay of the Year – Life! Theatre Awards 2001\nBest Actress – Life! Theatre Awards 2001\nBest Supporting Actor – Life! Theatre Awards 2001\nBest Costume Design – Life! Theatre Awards 2007 \nBased on the true story of Singaporean Wayang (Chinese Street Opera) star Madam Oon Ah Chiam\, Titoudao portrays the struggles of this petite lady with big dreams\, fighting against despairing personal states of poverty\, gender inequality and shadowed marital vexations. \nAbove all\, she takes these multiple hardships and challenges in life by the horns in order to realize her dreams and find her place in the world. This epic biography also parallels pivotal events in Singapore’s history to showcase how our lives have been transformed over the course of over 5 decades. \n“Titoudao arrived on stage at a time where Singapore theatre was hitting its stride\, but has continued to beat the same drum long after\, echoing the need to preserve our intangible heritage\, to elevate our fading past.” – The Straits Times \n“I lost my wayang virginity to Titoudao and had absolutely no regrets. We may not see much wayang these days\, but this play may just be that magical bridge that links us to Singapore’s vanishing treasures.” – TODAY Singapore \n“An Iconic Singaporean Theatrical Masterpiece” – Eksentrika \n“Titoudao connects with the young and old – it is a timeless piece of theatre. ” – Centre42 \n“The play feels like an intimate behind-the-scenes look at a wayang actress’ life. Older audience members would leave the play reminiscing about the good old times. As for me\, I left the play seeing wayang in a new light\, with newfound respect for the craft.” – TheSmartLocal \nFor more information: https://toyfactory.com.sg/titoudao/

SUMMARY:Home / 家 — A Sharing of Intercultural Performance Processes by Macarena Losada and Jacklyn Kuah
DESCRIPTION:Join us at ITI for an exclusive sharing session about the creative process of Home / 家 / La ropa sucia se lava / À la maison\, a work-in-progress\, cross-cultural performance project led by Macarena Losada. The event features a showcase of audiovisual materials and a discussion of ideas that shape the work\, presented by artist-scholars Losada and Jacklyn Kuah. \nKey ideas and takeaways:\n\n\nCultural Contact Zones — Where the narratives of cities and biographical material are  intertwined \n\n\nTranslation for the Stage — Contribution to the intercultural process by expanding meanings and representations of the text\, originally in English\, into Chinese and Spanish \n\n\nEmbodiment — In relation to the “Body as Territory” theory\, drawing upon the idea that the “female body is an extension of the territory inhabited”\, wherein history and suffering are reflected in our physical narratives \n\n\n  \nAbout the work:\nHome / 家 / La ropa sucia se lava / À la maison is an ongoing devising process that encompasses collaborative writing\, remote rehearsals\, and in-person staging processes. It unfolds as a collaborative effort uniting creators from Chile\, France\, and Singapore. The work explores the intersections of women from diverse cultures and the sense of cultural identity. The central conflict emerges as the character grapples with aligning familial beliefs and the expectations of assimilating into a foreign culture. It also delves into themes of gender equality\, cultural identity\, and humanity\, positioned within self-fiction and physical theatre.
