SUMMARY:Engaging Dramaturgs in the Devising Process 2023
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Dramaturgs in the Devising Process is a 5-session course for artists with a practice in creating devised work for the stage and who are curious to explore and mobilise the dramaturg as a resource. \nThe course aims to build the devising artist’s understanding of the functions and uses of dramaturgs and to provide the artist with tools to optimise these collaborations. Participants will explore how to: \n\nmatch the right dramaturg for their project\nclarify the boundaries of what the dramaturg can be expected to do or not do\ncustomise the dramaturg’s role at various stages of the devising process\nprompt and sustain productive conversations with the dramaturg\nnegotiate potential challenges or differences during the collaboration\n\nCo-facilitated by Dr Robin Loon and Juliet Chia\, the experience is designed to be hands-on and practice-oriented\, through the use of discussions and role-plays. The course comprises a mix of group sessions and one-on-one consultations with the facilitators. Participants will also engage with supplementary materials such as readings and podcasts or other mediatized resources. \nNot sure if this is for you? Join us for an online FAQ and briefing on 28 June 2023 (Wed)\, 7pm – 8pm. RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Trouble Came
DESCRIPTION:After her boyfriend dumps her for being depressed\, Julia (Kimberley Kiew)\, an actor\, turns up unannounced at the home of her sister and brother-in-law\, hellbent on understudying their perfect lives. \nShe appropriates Hemingway’s method of writing Shakespeare’s lines by hand to get a sense of genius\, unrelentingly copying Melanie (Kimberly Chan) and John (Steven Murphy) to “become” them. In so doing\, she sets off a chain reaction leading to an inevitable implosion. \nTrouble Came is loaded with delicious irony\, addressing just how far we’ll go to keep up with the book covers of other people’s lives. In an age where obsessively curated images have driven FOMO to anxiety and depression-causing levels\, Trouble Came is a toast to simply being okay who you are. \nJoining a cast led by Kimberley Kiew\, Kimberly Chan and Steven Murphy are the comedic talents of Monil SJ (Patel)\, Jon Cancio (Cal) and Hamza Qaiser (Man at gym). \nMore at https://artshouselimited.sg/gac-event-details/theatre/trouble-came \nCountdown to Trouble Came by following us on Instagram @brangoproductions to sneak a peek behind the scenes as we work towards opening night! \nIMDA Advisory 16 (some mature content)

SUMMARY:The Vault: Past Perfect
DESCRIPTION:The Vault: Past Perfect returns after its first run under the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) in May 2023. This time\, expect more tidbits and artefacts from the 90s – a decade of growth and experimentation in Singapore theatre\, and expanded scenes! \n3 actors gather and they reflect on their journey through Theatre in the 1990s. With 20/20 hindsight\, what did it mean to DO theatre in the 1990s? Why did they do what they do and more importantly\, how? Without any rose-tinted glass\, no misty water-coloured memories\, these actors share their thoughts and ruminations – is the past really so perfect? \nConceptualised by Robin Loon and Casey Lim\, and co-created with Nelson Chia\, Oniatta Effendi and Serene Chen\, The Vault: Past Perfect is a performance of pieces that draw on the personal archive\, reflecting on the energy and legacy of Singapore theatre-making in the 1990s.
