SUMMARY:NUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between
DESCRIPTION:NUS Arts Festival returns to campus with our latest edition: Spaces Between! \nRunning across 3 weekends in March\, you’ll be spoilt for choice with over 20 different shows spanning multiple genres and disciplines like dance\, music\, theatre\, film\, art installations\, dialogue\, and more! \nThe theme Spaces Between examines the idea of liminal spaces\, the uncomfortable unknown as we transition between phases\, and states. While liminal spaces bring discomfort and ambiguity\, they also present us with opportunities for growth and positive change\, physically\, emotionally\, and metaphorically. \nIn a world of diverse and divided views\, NUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between seeks to show how art can build connections and demonstrate that there is more to gain in the spaces between.

SUMMARY:Burying Children
DESCRIPTION:Who mandates the life of a child? Set in a world with a zero child policy as an answer to overpopulation and conflicts over resources\, Burying Children follows the lives of a nomadic community of women who leave the City in protest\, and seek refuge back in mother nature. Examining processes of burying children within ourselves or abandoning the very idea of bearing children in a world without hope for the future\, this ensemble dance theatre work follows several stories in search of freedom\, reprieve\, or revenge.

SUMMARY:Checkpoint Theatre presents Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes – A New Play by Myle Yan Tan
DESCRIPTION:The eve of an election. A politician\, a musician\, an activist\, an academic\, and a therapist reunite after several years. As the five friends catch up on the different paths their lives have taken\, they realise their rose-tinted memories might be the only thing holding them together. With secrets unravelling\, old conflicts reawakening\, and a threat looming\, the five are forced to confront the boys they once were\, and the men they want to become. \n  \nPlaywright Myle Yan Tay’s powerful and incisive play lays bare the tensions of male friendship with sharp humour and searching questions. As past mistakes lead to dire consequences\, should loyalty prevail over shifting values? What does it take to be a friend? \nHuzir Sulaiman’s deft direction illuminates the finely-crafted text\, interrogating what it means to be a brown boy in Singapore. With a stellar ensemble cast comprising Gosteloa Spancer\, Krish Natarajan\, Ebi Shankara\, Adib Kosnan\, and Shahid Nasheer\, Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes is a nuanced and unflinching examination of friendship\, race\, and masculinity in our country.

SUMMARY:Essentially Macbeth 必要麦克白
DESCRIPTION:A group of ex-drama club members come together to stage Macbeth in order to rekindle their passion for the arts they felt 10 years ago. By coming back to theatre\, they find themselves re-examining their life choices and asking the same question they had before – what is the meaning and purpose of the arts in their lives? \nDirected by Judy Ngo\, with an original score composed by Phang Kok Jun and conducted by Moses Gay\, Essentially Macbeth is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between NUS Chinese Drama and NUS Chinese Orchestra and explores what success\, ambition and fulfilment mean to today’s generation. \nPerformed in Mandarin with English surtitles. \nEssentially Macbeth is presented as part of NUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between. \nNUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between examines the idea of liminal spaces\, the uncomfortable unknown as we transition between phases\, and states.
