SUMMARY:Sound Plot: True/South\, A Collection of Audio Plays
DESCRIPTION:𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁: 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲/𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 is a collection of audio plays responding to the geographical area of Tanjong Pagar/Pasir Panjang where the Singapore Art Museum currently resides. With audio design by Artwave Studio\, the plays first premiered as part of Singapore Art Week\, each with an audio spot installation at the museum and now available online as well. \nThe three short audio plays (of which the latter 2 were selected through our Open Call) are: \nSea Song  \nAdvisory: Contains some coarse language \nLaurie and Scott settle into their new expatriate lives at Sentosa Cove only to discover that not all is as it seems. DESCRIPTION:The Actors Studio unveils its biggest production of 2024. Written by Joe Hasham OAM and directed by Dato’ Dr Faridah Merican\, The Sisters Soong is a brand-new play that relates the story of the famous and somewhat infamous sisters; three of the most influential siblings of 20th century China. \nBorn in China and educated in America\, “Big Sister” Ai-ling married banker H.H. Kung\, who later became Finance Minister\, “Red Sister” Ching-ling married the Father of Modern China\, Sun Yat-sen\, and “Little Sister” Mei-ling married Chiang Kai-shek. \nIn this modern retelling that alternates between fact and fiction\, the playwright has taken some artistic license and cleverly woven this family saga that spans a century with the help of a narrator. \nThe Sisters Soong will be brought to life by an award-winning cast with choreography by Kenny Shim\, costuming by Beatrice Looi\, music and arrangement by Tan Zhi Yong against a set by Scenographer Yusman Mokhtar and live music under the baton of Maestro Lee Kok Leong. \nAbout TAS Seni Teater Rakyat\nSince its inception in 1989\, The Actors Studio has been presenting groundbreaking theatre in Malaysia. SUMMARY:Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine)
DESCRIPTION:Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine) is an immersive and interactive experience combining poetry\, sound\, and light. Part of “Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Interplay” and Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary celebrations\, this event celebrates the rich histories and communities of Waterloo Street. \nWaterloo Street represents Singapore’s diverse heritage\, and Cor Machina explores the connections between communities and the arts\, symbolised by the typewriter as a relic with the poet as its beating heart. The typewriter’s mechanical clatter echoes modern life’s relentless grind\, yet within this noise\, there is beauty—a reminder that even in the machine\, the human heart creates with hope. \nCor Machina captures this playfully\, by inviting participants to explore these themes through creation. Audiences first enter an installation of pre-made prompts that draws from personal\, communal memories and stories of the street. They’re invited to send in an order for a poem to the Proletariat Poetry Factory\, which becomes a meta memory machine. Poets\, musicians\, and artists create new memories and stories from their inputs\, blending them with the street’s past. \nThe work evokes collective remembrance and celebrates the street’s heritage in a contemporary context. The intent is to spark meaningful conversations\, weaving together past and present\, individual and collective experience. This performance is also in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, serving to commemorate our placemaking and memory making on Waterloo Street.

DESCRIPTION:Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) invites you to an evening dedicated to the art of Jingju and a dialogue of cultures. This event will feature a demonstration of techniques and selected excerpts from Jingju works presented by ITI students\, offering an exploration of this traditional theatre form. \nHighlighting the evening is an introduction by and Q&A with Mdm Li Qiu Ping\, the distinguished Stephen Riady Master Chair in Jingju\, who returns to teach this art form at ITI for the first time in six years. \nJingju is celebrated for its intricate combination of singing\, dialogue\, acting\, and acrobatics. Recognised on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, Jingju is one of the four Asian traditional forms that students at ITI study through nine-week intensive immersions as part of the intercultural training programme.

DESCRIPTION:What is righteousness? How does one define righteousness? Is it justifiable to compromise one’s righteousness to achieve cosmic balance? This play aims to discuss these existential questions in the eyes of a figure steeped in Hindu mythology\, Ram of the Axe who is also widely believed to be one of the first disciples of ancient indian martial arts. Audience will take a journey through time with Ram as he explores complex concepts such as the guru-disciple relationship\, redemption\, and sacrifices in the path to achieve cosmic balance. \nThe Indian martial arts of Silambam and Kalaripayattu will play a vital role in the play. Recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of Singapore\, techniques of Silambam will be used in the choreography of the multiple fight sequences in the play. The inclusion of martial arts in this play aims to provide a wholesome experience to the audience while showcasing its cultural heritage.
