SUMMARY:Checkpoint Theatre presents Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes – A New Play by Myle Yan Tan
DESCRIPTION:The eve of an election. A politician\, a musician\, an activist\, an academic\, and a therapist reunite after several years. As the five friends catch up on the different paths their lives have taken\, they realise their rose-tinted memories might be the only thing holding them together. With secrets unravelling\, old conflicts reawakening\, and a threat looming\, the five are forced to confront the boys they once were\, and the men they want to become. \n  \nPlaywright Myle Yan Tay’s powerful and incisive play lays bare the tensions of male friendship with sharp humour and searching questions. As past mistakes lead to dire consequences\, should loyalty prevail over shifting values? What does it take to be a friend? \nHuzir Sulaiman’s deft direction illuminates the finely-crafted text\, interrogating what it means to be a brown boy in Singapore. With a stellar ensemble cast comprising Gosteloa Spancer\, Krish Natarajan\, Ebi Shankara\, Adib Kosnan\, and Shahid Nasheer\, Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes is a nuanced and unflinching examination of friendship\, race\, and masculinity in our country.

SUMMARY:TRIP 2023: No Particular Order
DESCRIPTION:A despot has come to power. The population is anxious\, submissive and scared. \n  \nBut beneath every violation of civil liberty\, there are real human beings; behind every act of resistance\, there is an individual willing to risk everything. And these people aren’t heroic or remarkable – they’re just like us. \n  \nThrough a series of vignettes involving the lives of bureaucrats\, soldiers\, artists and tour guides\, No Particular Order charts the fate of a society in turmoil to ask at every step of the way: is it empathy\, or power\, that endures? \n  \nJoel Tan’s No Particular Order  first debuted in May 2022 at London’s Theatre503. Described as “startling and apocalyptic”\, the play was shortlisted for the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award as well as the 2022 George Devine Award. This performance marks its Singapore premiere. \n  \nA programme of TRIP—a platform to showcase work by early-career directors. \n  \nDirector: Sim Yan Ying “YY” \nPlaywright: Joel Tan \nPerformers: Arielle Jasmine Van Zuijlen\, Karen Tan\, Pavan J Singh and Shrey Bhargava \nLighting Designer: James Tan \nSound Designer: Lee Yew Jin (Ctrl Fre@k) \nSet Designer: Hella Chan \nProduction Manager: Evelyn Chia (The Backstage Affair) \nStage Manager: Carolene Ruth Liew (The Backstage Affair) \nAssistant Stage Manager: Irish Alcantara (The Backstage Affair)

SUMMARY:TRIP 2023: I am trying to say something true
DESCRIPTION:After smashing her work computer in the office pantry in an uncharacteristic fit of rage\, Risa is now sat in a room with Dr Robert\, her newly acquired therapist. She cannot go back to how she was living before. Risa must look back on her own life to look forward. What caused her to end up at this exact spot? \n  \nWas it her Catholic ah ma whose funeral she skipped\, her ex-girlfriend whom she loved deeply but broke up with\, or her tendency to feel too much? Or maybe… something else entirely? \n  \nSo instead\, this is a story about distance: the spaces between people and places\, the gaps between past and present; and about living in the gulf between what we know and what we feel. \n  \nFirst commissioned for the 2018 season of The Studios\, Michelle Tan’s deeply intimate script explores the complexities of personal truth and emotional vulnerability. \n  \nA programme of TRIP—a platform to showcase work by early-career directors. \n  \nDirector: Renee Yeong \nPlaywright: Michelle Tan \nPerformer: Sabrina Sng \nLighting Designer: Gabriel Chan \nSound Designer: Jing Ng \nSet Designer: Petrina Dawn Tan \nProduction Manager: Lam Dan Fong (The Backstage Affair) \nStage Manager: Celestine Wong (The Backstage Affair) \nAssistant Stage Manager: Chong Wee Nee (The Backstage Affair) \n  \nPhoto Credit: Crispian Chan

SUMMARY:We Are Like This Only 3
DESCRIPTION:“We Are Like This Only 3” is back to explore the real and perceived impressions that Singaporeans\, particularly the Chinese\, have of the ‘New Indians” in our community and vice versa. The comical play takes on a number of racist and xenophobic peeves that have been amplified on social media\, wrestling with real and anecdotal situations with humour and a sense of the ridiculous. These include incidents during the lockdown\, feelings of being crowded out\, locals’ perception of job competition\, stereotyping Indian doctors\, employer-employee relationships\, the perceived arrogance/stand-offishness of new Indians and more. At the end of an entertaining evening at the theatre combined with the possibility that folks will go home a little bit wiser\, accepting that we are all “different but same same”\, a forum theatre style interactive discussion between the audience and the actors will bring out personal observations\, emotions and challenges of integrating in Singapore. \n“We Are Like This Only 3” directed by Daisy Irani Subaiah and written by Subin Subaiah\, will be performed by the brilliant cast of award winning actors Josephine Tan\, Daisy Irani\, Hang Qian Chou and Subin Subaiah. \n“We Are Like This Only 3” will also feature the designs of 2022’s Life!Theatre award winning Lighting Designer Alberta Wileo\, Set Design by Keng San from On Staging\, and our very own “Tea Party Rap” written by Preetipls (also known as Preeti Nair).

SUMMARY:SEPTUM A solo exhibition by YEO SHIH YUN.
DESCRIPTION:SEPTUM\nA solo exhibition by YEO SHIH YUN\, with collaborators EUGINIA TAN\, HENRIK CHENG\, KELLEY CHENG\, NG YUAN CI & TAN WEIYING.\nSEPTUM is an immersive visual-theatre experience consisting of seven poems\, presented by Yeo Shih Yun (painter)\, Euginia Tan (poet)\, Tan Weiying (director-performer) and Ng Yuan Ci (musician-performer). \nIn Latin\, SEPTUM means Seven\, which represents the series of seven new paintings and poems. In the dictionary\, the term Septum means a partition separating two chambers\, such as that between the nostrils or the chambers of the heart. Through this exhibition\, we would like to pierce the Septum of art-making\, breaking down conceived separations between art forms\, to create an anchor which is the final immersive installation. \nThe process of SEPTUM involved a chain-like reaction through different artistic mediums.

SUMMARY:Between Ground and Sky
DESCRIPTION:Between Ground and Sky is an interdisciplinary production exploring the poetic world of renowned Malaysian-American poet Shirley Geok-lin Lim through contemporary art song and corporeal theatre. Born to a Peranakan mother and a Chinese father\, Lim grew up in British Malaya with Malay and Hokkien as her first languages. She later pursued her graduate studies in the U.S. and is currently a Professor Emerita at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. Her poetry is marked by her life of crossings and travel\, and traverses scenes\, dreams\, and histories that are intensely personal yet relatable; local and yet transnational. Inspired by the cultural in-betweenness of her work\, the production seeks to inspire deeper reflection on the taut\, yet complex and intersectional nature of Lim’s poetics. \nThe eponymous song cycle of five songs by Tan Tiag Yi will be performed by soprano Wong Yong En and pianist Koh Kai Jie\, alongside corporeal theatre work by contemporary theatre practitioners Ang Gey Pin and Ranice Tay\, assisted by producer Wu Chin Ying. The poetry performed in this production is predominantly from Lim’s recent poetry collections Ars Poetica for the Day and Do You Live In?\, both published by Ethos Books in 2015. Her other poems and writings have also been excerpted where relevant. The two collections will be available for purchase at the live performances\, courtesy of Ethos Books. \nThis performance is kindly supported by the National Arts Council\, the Tote Board Arts Fund\, and the National Youth Council Young ChangeMakers Grant. \nMovement artists: Ang Gey Pin\, Ranice Tay \nSoprano: Wong Yong En \nPiano: Koh Kai Jie \nComposer: Tan Tiag Yi \nCurators: Tan Tiag Yi\, Wu Chin Ying \nProducer: Wu Chin Ying
