SUMMARY:#Metazomia
DESCRIPTION:#Metazomia is a 360-degree immersive cinematic experience created by award-winning artist Brian Gothong Tan. Famed for creating impressive multimedia experiences for the Singapore Bicentennial\, National Day Parade and the Singapore International Festival of Arts\, Tan’s latest production will not only be a visual feast but also an interactive one.\n\nCreated from artificial intelligence and inspired by the writings and ideas of James C. Scott’s ‘Zomia’ and Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin creation\, Tan’s cinematic experience looks into what the future could hold. Tan spins off illustrative genres such as cypherpunk\, solarpunk and desertpunk. He harnesses history\, literature\, popular culture\, film and digitality to playfully critique and comment on reality and the desires for alternatives. In doing so\, Tan creates a non-state reality that reflexively looks back at proposals of better futures. The result: an epic melding of generative art and motion graphics with interactivity that is fun\, thrilling\, and beautiful.\nExperience #Metazomia with tickets available at Peatix.\n\nDetails:\na) Gala Fundraising Event plus Countdown Party\n31 Dec 2022\, 11pm till 1 Jan 2023\, 1am\nTickets (by donation) at S$200*\nIncl. of champagne\, wine\, and light bites and a signed open edition #Metazomia digital print.\n(Tax deduction receipt available)\n\nb) 2 till 20 Jan 2023\n2pm – 10pm (2 Jan\, Fri till Sun)\n5pm – 10pm (Tue till Thu)\nClosed on 9 and 16 Jan\nTickets at S$23 and S$15 (students/NSF/senior concessions)\nGroup bookings available\, email ticketing.tworks@gmail.com for details

SUMMARY:Django in Pain by Por Piedad Teatro & The Play Company
DESCRIPTION:Digital table-top puppet theatre via video on demand\nContent advisories: This story is about a character who is dealing with depression and contains strong images and language associated with suicidal thoughts and actions. There are non-photographic depictions of injured animals in distress. \nAccessibility features: Closed captions in English. A version with audio description is also available.\n60 minutes with no intermission\nNC16 (Some Mature Content)\nAsian premiere \n“In a world that seems to give us lots of reasons to give up\, Django in Painis a cry of hope”\n—Juan Carlos Araujo\, Entretenia.com (translated from Spanish) \n“A day will come when you might need to kill a wolf; a mad wolf out there\, or a wolf inside of you… ” \nA playwright wants to write a happy play\, but he can’t because his main character is so depressed that he wants to end his life. Hopefully the playwright will find a way to give \nDjango’s journey a happy ending. Or is it the other way around? \nDjango in Pain is an astonishing\, exquisitely detailed and healing piece about depression\, creativity\, and love. Made and staged within the isolation of the early days of the pandemic in New York City\, it used only hand-made puppets and scrap materials found around their\nhome and was filmed on a cellphone. This feature-length table-top puppet show chronicles the often-humorous with razor edges of grief misfortunes and adventures of Django—a puppet loosely inspired by Django Reinhardt\, and a stray dog that keeps getting in his way.\nIt is both a deeply personal yet universal\, multi-layered tale of despair\, loyalty and hope. \nDjango in Pain premiered in New York City in October 2021 to rave reviews. The Spanish version\, Django con la Soga al Cuello has been presented in Mexico and Argentina\, where it received more than 6000 views in just three days.

Fascinating\, moving\, mystical\, informative; I could list a dictionary’s worth of adjectives and still not fully describe how special Tree Confessions is… an audio-only piece that is so fully realized you can see it. Please take half an hour and listen to Tree Confessions and be changed for the better.”\n—Rachel More\, View \nPresenting the world’s first play told entirely from the point of view of a tree\, performed by award-winning Broadway\, theatre and TV actress Kathleen Chalfant. \nTrees talk! SUMMARY:Mother of Compost by Noémie Huttner-Koros
DESCRIPTION:“Whimsical yet powerful\, Mother of Compost is a show with ecological advice that’s worth hearing and heeding”\n—Seesaw \n“Mother of Compost tackles climate change and social responsibility through the lens of young artists as they contemplate nature and regeneration\, what legacy we will leave on our children\, and whether it is\, indeed a good idea to birth at all.”\n—The Fourth Wall \nDearest compost\, I am your mother and I am your child. \nWe live in an ecologically precarious time. Some of us don’t want to bring children into this world\, others are worried their children won’t have a world to grow old into… but we’ve still got a whole lot of love to give. Rethink what it means to give birth and be birthed\, and dance along with us in this gooey\, camp and interactive subversion of family portraits\, birthing classes\, and evolutionary biology. \nOver the course of the performance\, the audience transforms from strangers to the beginnings of a family. Mother of Compost is a queer and unruly family gathering and a communal grieving for what is being lost and everything left to fight for. \nFrom the minds of queer performance-makers Noémie Huttner-Koros and director Andrew Sutherland\, Mother of Compost asks you to roll up your sleeves this Fringe Festival… Change only comes from getting your hands dirty. \nWith the support of the Department of Local Government\, Sport and Cultural Industries\, Government of Western Australia.

SUMMARY:Never the Bride by The Necessary Stage
DESCRIPTION:In English\, with some Mandarin\, Malay and Tamil\nAccessibility features: open captions in English\n90 minutes with no intermission\nRating to be advised\nFringe Commission \nThree queer Singaporean men cast a little gay spell\, don their bridal veils\, and embark on a whirlwind journey towards matrimony. They dream through the past\, the present and an imagined future to discover what a big\, fat\, fabulously gay wedding would look like for them! \nIn a country where the legal right to marriage is denied to the queer community\, these individuals navigate the political\, social\, cultural\, and personal reality of their lives\, along with saying “yes” to whimsical wedding fantasies. “Always the bridesmaid\, never the bride.” Is that the ultimate ultimatum\, or is there a possible way to find marital bliss amidst the chaos? \nDevised and performed by Ryan Ang\, Fadhil Daud and Rajkumar Thiagaras\, Never the Bride was first created and presented at the Devising with Actors and Playwrights programme as part of The Necessary Stage’s Devising Platform in 2021.

SUMMARY:Kafka's Ape by Phala O Phala & Tony Bonani Miyambo
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility features: open captions in English\n50 minutes with no intermission\nRating: General\nAsian Premiere \n“The fact that it’s actually more relevant today than when it was written 100 years ago suggests that the world we currently live in has some serious problems.”\n—Heather Taylor Johnson\, InDaily \n“The audience is left both dumbfounded and in awe at the end of this hour of theatre. It has been a mighty trip into a hideous hypothetical. It has been a display of masterful acting\, it has been a graphic lesson in humanity and an unforgettable experience.”\n—Samela Harris\, The Barefoot Review \nAn adaptation of Franz Kafka’s A Report to an Academy\, Kafka’s Ape is a solo performance about a primate’s struggle to overcome the confines of captivity. The hard-hitting play presents a metaphorical view on South African society\, highlighting the complexities of identity in post-apartheid South Africa as well as in the human race. \nAn ape named Red Peter is captured. In his quest to break out of his confinement\, he learns to imitate humanity and contests identity based on outward appearance. Through his journey\, Kafka’s Ape questions the understanding of otherness. \nMiyambo has received multiple accolades for this powerful performance\, including Winner of Outstanding Performance award at Prague Fringe Festival 2019\, Best Satire Award at New York’s United Solo Festival 2019\, and the Graham F. Smith Peace Foundation Award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2021\, among others.

SUMMARY:Jalan Jalan Cari Makan by SHIFT
DESCRIPTION:About SHIFT \nSHIFT is a progressive young dance artist development programme that is targeted at youths 14-25 years old\, with a focus on those trained in street dance forms. Across 3 years\, the dancers receive training from industry professionals in dance skills\, movement philosophies and more. Discover more here. \nAbout Jalan Jalan Cari Makan \nThis production is the hard work of the Year 1 SHIFTers\, who have successfully gone through a full year of training and ending it off with an opportunity to apply their experiences. Jalan Jalan Cari Makan features 4 pieces choreographed by 4 dance industry professionals\, created together with the SHIFTers. \n“Jalan Jalan Cari Makan”: loosely means going for a stroll to look for food. \nWe envision the dancers’ journey thus far as a collection of different experiences – the “ingredients” that make up who they are today. What happens when we take the time to collate these ingredients? What dishes can we cook up? How do we feel about the journey and the results? \nExploring themes from hunger to desire\, confusion to abstinence\, we invite you to jalan-jalan with us this January 2023. \nThis event is made possible with the support of: \n\nNational Arts Council\nArts Fund\nNational Youth Coucil
