SUMMARY:Animal Farm
DESCRIPTION:“All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others.“ \nSomething is going on at Manor Farm. The animals have overthrown Farmer Jones and\, with the pigs as their leaders\, have created a new state for themselves called Animal Farm. \nVowing to eliminate the terrible inequities in the system\, the pigs write a set of commandments as a guide for animal life. However\, cunning propaganda hides their true agenda\, as the ideals of the revolution are gradually subverted. \nAnimal Farm\, George Orwell’s most celebrated novel\, is a timely reminder that absolute power corrupts and that totalitarian regimes inevitably betray the trust of ordinary citizens. \nCombining physical theatre\, live and original music\, and innovative design\, Wild Rice’s 20th-anniversary production of Animal Farm is more than just a tale of barnyard betrayal. Vital\, sexy and wickedly funny\, it invigorates a world classic with humour\, integrity and clarity – proving that Orwell’s dark fairy tale is as relevant today as it was 80 years ago. \nProduction History\nWild Rice’s groundbreaking production of Animal Farm first opened to rave reviews at Singapore’s Jubilee Hall in 2002\, garnering three DBS Life! Theatre Awards for Best Director\, Best Ensemble Acting and Best Music. \nSome of the finest actors in Singapore and the region have gotten down on all fours to breathe life into Animal Farm’s menagerie of characters\, including Abdul Gani Karim\, Lim Kay Siu\, Lim Yu-Beng\, Pam Oei\, Tan Kheng Hua\, Selena Tan\, Yeo Yann Yann and more. \nAnimal Farm has since proudly flown Singapore’s flag overseas\, playing to rapturous full houses and standing ovations in New Zealand (2004)\, Hong Kong (2010) and Australia (2011). \nThis 20th Anniversary production marks the first time Wild Rice has staged Animal Farm in over a decade\, and features a brand-new ensemble cast of the country’s most promising young actors. \nStarring Erwin Shah Ismail\, Tia Andrea Guttensohn\, Dwayne Lau\, Audrey Luo\, Vester Ng\, Suhaili Safari\nDuration: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (with no interval)\nIMDA Rating: TBA

From ancient stone tools all the way to the computers that we use to work and live\, we have always possessed the innate desire to progress and advance. We’ve come far enough that we’ve begun to trust in our computers in ways that we wouldn’t trust another human being. \nAs we further develop these systems\, could we one day ask the machine to interpret our dreams?\nCan we see ourselves in the machines we use?\nCan we ground ourselves in the ‘now’ to catch a glimpse of possible futures? \n  \n(Use the promo code EB20 to enjoy 20% discount off ticket prices\, until 18 July 2022)

SUMMARY:SURVIVING HOPE
DESCRIPTION:Surviving Hope is an original theatre play inspired by real stories exploring notions of hope and mental wellness. The Playwright\, Ivan Lim\, uses his personal experiences and theatrical know-how to juxtapose elements required to express the deepest and most intricate dilemmas faced in broken relationships. The term ‘Surviving Hope’ paints a faint optimism in overcoming our greatest fears and struggles and highlights the importance of staying committed till the very end. The play is presented in a covert narrative\, through the eyes of children and parents\, bringing out the ironies of human behaviors and conflicting mental states. \nSurviving Hope is a theatre piece scripted to shed more light on the current stigma made on mental challenges in Singapore. The project seeks to stir deeper conversations and public discourse over mental issues people face and how it should be important for everyone to see a dim of hope in every one of our own struggles. \nActors: Adi Amon Mesika\, Nini Chaiyanara\, Risa Ann Wong\, Miranda Ng\, James Lee\nPlaywright : Ivan Lim\nDirector: Shana Yap\nDramaturg & Sound: Siti Z\nTheme song composer: Rebecca Louise Burch\nProducer: Dennis Toh

SUMMARY:almost home《我以为家》
DESCRIPTION:If home is where the heart is\,\nwhat do you do when your heart says\, \n“Actually… Is it ok if I don’t want to go home?” \nKuala Lumpur-born\, Singapore-based Ng Mun Poh has spent the last 18 years of her life travelling between her two “homes”. As she should. \nIn a monodrama equal parts heartfelt and humorous\, almost home dramatises the struggle of finding her place in a home where nothing\, and yet so much has changed. \nA first version of the work\, Daughter\, was received with rave reviews as part of Practice’s It’s Not About The Numbers series in September 2021. It has since been brilliantly reimagined for a black box stage in collaboration with director Yeo Lyle and dramaturg Neo Hai Bin. \n***\nThis project is supported by Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre and funded through the Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award.

SUMMARY:Pulau Ujong / Island at the End
DESCRIPTION:Pulau Ujong\, or “Island at the End”\, is one of the oldest recorded names for Singapore. But what was it like at the beginning\, before humans started transforming the landscape? What lifeforms once filled its rainforests and rivers\, and which ones are now extinct? With temperatures soaring twice as fast as the rest of the world\, what will this island’s future look like? \nWritten with heartfelt insight by award-winning playwright Alfian Sa’at\, Pulau Ujong is a riveting piece of documentary theatre featuring interviews with climate scientists\, botanists\, zoologists\, environmental historians and activists. Their words\, wishes and worries for the world take centre stage alongside the more-than-human voices we all need to hear – from zoo mascot Ah Meng to Singapore’s last tiger. \nBrought to thrilling\, kaleidoscopic heights by director Edith Podesta and a brilliant ensemble cast\, Pulau Ujong is both an elegy and a cry of hope. At a time when we can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to climate change as it ravages the entire planet\, Pulau Ujong invites audiences to re-acquaint themselves with the miracles and mysteries of the natural world. \nStarring Al-Matin Yatim\, Ryan Ang\, Koh Wan Ching\, Krish Natarajan\, Siti Khalijah Zainal\nDuration: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (with no interval)\nIMDA Rating: TBA

SUMMARY:A Land Imagined: A Transnational Framework On Land Reclamation And Labour
DESCRIPTION:T:>Works features PerForm Fellow Dr Jerrine Tan\, a researcher\, writer and assistant professor at City University Hong Kong\, in the next PerForm keynote\, A Land Imagined: A Transnational Framework on Land Reclamation and Labour. Referencing Yeo Siew Hua’s neo-noir mystery thriller film A Land Imagined\, as well as Saidiya Hartman’s work on the fungibility of bodies and Lisa Lowe’s writings on immigration and citizenship\, Dr Tan brings together a lecture that allegorises the movement of land across bodies of water for the similar movement of indentured labourers. It further unpacks the film’s imaginative and responsible form of transnational assemblage which connects cultures and people not through labour or even soil\, but through art. \nImage credits: Akanga Film Asia
