SUMMARY:Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency
DESCRIPTION:Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay invites local and international artists\, curators\, programmers\, writers\, researchers and practitioners across all disciplines in the performing arts to apply for the Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency\, taking place in Singapore between April and June 2026. In its third edition\, the Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency is an artistic research development programme by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay\, supported by the National Arts Council\, Singapore. \nThis fully-funded residency aims to support creative research in contemporary performing arts by providing its residents the time and space for artistic inquiry\, experimentation\, development\, research activities and opportunities for interdisciplinary and transcultural dialogues. The residency welcomes various manners and methodologies of enquiry\, embracing a pluralistic approach towards research that unfolds not only through the written word\, but also includes forms of experimentation with the body\, performed moments\, and other non-traditional systems of knowledge. \nThere is no commitment for residents to create a production during or after the residency. Instead\, residents will be asked to present at least one public programme of their choosing\, developed in conversation with the Esplanade Team. \nThe residency is a duration of between one month to three months long and residents will receive a stipend\, access to a shared-working space\, studios when required\, as well as accommodation and international travel to or from Singapore\, if from abroad. \nThere will be biennial open calls held for applications to the residency and each edition will revolve around a thematic focus conceived to respond to current critical issues in our society. In 2026\, the residency presents the thematic focus This Time. \nResidents are chosen through a Selection Panel comprising leading international curators\, programmers\, academics\, artists and managers. They have been appointed based on their thought-provoking practices\, dynamic networks with practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines and their invaluable knowledge of the performing arts across Singapore\, Asia and beyond. The Selection Panel will also serve as interlocutors in the programme’s development and be available as consultants for all residents.

SUMMARY:Natural Radio Workshop led by artist Ong Kian Peng
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce participants to natural radio. Natural radio is the emission of Very Low Frequency (VLF) and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radio waves due to electromagnetic energy from natural phenomena. These emissions originate terrestrially from lightning and from the Sun’s interactions with the Earth’s magnetosphere\, they are among the inaudible voices of the environment. If the low frequencies of these electromagnetic outbursts are transformed into acoustic waves\, many of these signals may fall within the range of human hearing. Experiencing electromagnetic waves as acoustic waves will allow listeners to connect with the beauty and complexity of natural radio waves in a unique aural experience. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to assemble an analogue handheld radio device that tunes in to natural radio frequencies. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own headphones with a 3.5mm audio jack\, along with an optional audio recorder to capture and share their auditory discoveries. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. Techno Diversions. \nNo prior knowledge of electronics is required. \nLimited slots only! Register here.\nThis workshop is free for all participants. A refundable deposit of SGD 10 is requested to book a slot. The deposit will be returned upon attendance of the event. There will be no refund in case of no-show. \nIf you have questions\, email ntuccacomms@ntu.edu.sg

SUMMARY:METAL MACHINE MISCHIEF (or how to make noise music with bicycles) by bani haykal
DESCRIPTION:“Riding bikes ain’t s#!+ without climate justice\, without land back\, without liberation of everybody.” Christina Torres\, Cyclista Zine \nThe bicycle is more than just a means of transportation. In our increasingly car-centric and carbon-heavy lifestyle\, cycling is a climate action that slows down the rate at which our planet is burning. Inspiring stories from Gaza have shown us how bicycles can be radically repurposed into washing machines\, sewing machines\, and even power generators. \nIn the first part of the workshop\, participants will be offered a set of unused bicycle components and they will be guided to devise and conceptualise new musical or sonic instruments with them. In the second part\, these unorthodox instruments will be played in a group jam session! \nParticipants are encouraged to bring personal items such as mallets\, drumsticks\, clarinet mouthpieces\, and/or any musical bobs and bits they can incorporate into the instruments. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. Techno Diversions. \nNo prior knowledge or experience is required.

SUMMARY:Temporal Oscillations. Electronics workshop led by artist Chok Si Xuan
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore how to use common electronic components to modulate the flow of electricity\, assemble and hijack standard systems of temporality. Participants will learn how a 555 timer integrated circuit (IC) forms an astable multivibrator. The 555 timer IC is a tiny chip found in many everyday devices—blinking LED lights\, kitchen timers\, alarm systems\, sound makers\, etc.—that modulates the frequencies of electrical signals. The term ‘astable’ means ‘not stable’ because the circuit never settles into a single state\, is a basic electronic circuit that generates a continuous oscillating output\, switching between two voltage levels. \nWorking with pre-assembled circuits created by the artist\, participants will be able to experiment with various components (small motors\, LED lights\, and speakers\, etc) as outputs. Exploring the transformation of different forms of energy—chemical energy from batteries\, mechanical energy \, kinetic energy and byproduct thermal energy\, the workshop accesses materiality as a manner of understanding the fundamental ways systems unfold. \nThrough engaging with electronic circuits in a hands-on and accessible way\, participants can expect to develop a direct understanding of some visible and less visible aspects that power everyday technology. Participants are encouraged to bring their own components for experimentation. These may include battery-operated toys\, LED lights or small light strips\, buzzers or small speakers\, direct current (DC) motors\, small fans\, switches or buttons\, old electronic parts like sensors or wires\, and similar items. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. Techno Diversions. \nThis workshop is suitable for age 18 and above.\nNo prior knowledge of electronics is required. \nLimited slots only! Register here.\nThis workshop is free for all participants. A refundable deposit of 10$ is requested to book a slot. The deposit will be returned upon attendance of the event. There will be no refund in case of no-show. \nIf you have questions\, please email ntuccacomms@ntu.edu.sg

SUMMARY:Residency at ITI: Open Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) launched the first-ever Residency at ITI earlier this year\, aimed at providing local theatre practitioners with time and space to engage in process-based practice. \nFor the first residency period from May to July 2024\, artists-in-residence Ranice Tay and Renee Chua (SG) have been developing their respective performance projects: i am finally in love with the world 2.0 and Ma Forgets. As part of the residency\, the artists will host Open Sessions\, a series of programmes to engage with the local arts community and general public. \nResidency at ITI: Open Sessions \n29 & 30 June | Sat & Sun | 8 PM\ni am finally in love with the world 2.0: work-in-progress presentation by Ranice Tay (SG)\nInspired by the heart sutra\, i am finally in love with the world 2.0 poses a question on emptiness: the place we rise from and return to. In this iteration of creative exploration\, we seek to embody some of the most striking haikus written by Zen monks just before the moments of their death\, where life is – paradoxically — at its clearest and most lucid. \nAttendance is by invitation only\, email to enquire. \n20 & 27 July | Sat | 11 AM – 2 PM\nCloud Body Workshops with Ranice Tay\nJoin ITI artist-in-residence Ranice Tay for a two-day workshop series to experience CLOUD BODY\, her ongoing body of research that seeks to develop an approach to theatre-making through the embodiment of Taiji. \nFees: $40 single-day workshop / $70 two-day workshop\nSliding scale available – view the registration form for details\nRegister Here\n \n28 July | Sun | 3 PM – 6 PM\nMa Forgets: work-in-progress presentation by Renee Chua (SG)\nMa Forgets is a participatory theatre performance that explores the intricate landscape of different stages of dementia from the caregiver and patient’s perspective. The audience becomes an integral part of the narrative\, stepping into the fragmented world of the caregiver and patient who are grappling with the challenges of memory loss. \nAttendance is by invitation only\, email to enquire.

SUMMARY:New Scripts Garage August 2023
DESCRIPTION:The New Scripts Garage provides three scripts with considered dramaturgical support in the form of either a facilitated Script Circle or One-on-One Dramaturgy Sessions with our Writer in Residence. \nThe first six eligible scripts received during the Open Call Submissions period will be handed over to the team of readers\, made up of directors\, playwrights\, and dramaturgs\, who will consider the submissions. \nBased on the quality of the script\, its stage of development\, and the writer’s needs as expressed in the application form\, they will then recommend either a Script Circle or one-on-one dramaturgy sessions with our Writer in Residence. \nThe Script Circle will be organised by Centre 42\, who will invite actors\, writers\, directors\, and dramaturgs from a pool of artists we have been working closely with on this programme. The scripts receiving one-on-one dramaturgy will be scheduled directly with our Writer in Residence\, who will read the scripts and provide detailed feedback in discussion with the writer. Scripts that were not shortlisted will receive written feedback from the reading team and writers are welcome to submit subsequent drafts for future iterations. \nThis programme prioritises writer development over polish\, and aims to get the writer excited to work on the next draft of their script\, with a clearer sense of where to go. \nPlease note that this is not a presentational platform. This short-form residency is ideal for playwrights who have a script that they want to take forward to the next draft in the development process.
