SUMMARY:𝐇𝐮𝐦 𝐚 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐞 — 𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦
DESCRIPTION:To understand the fascination in sound-making means dissecting the social history of the cacophony and the ‘noise’ makers (or the early forms of musical instruments) that have emerged from the particular relationship between humans and nature. Learning to create sounds is also learning to listen to them.\nTo accompany the visual landscape of Truong Cong Tung’s ‘disoriented garden’\, Sàn Art is pleased to invite our audiences to join the unique aural experience of actively listening to\, and making sounds\, from musical instruments that are shared amongst ethnic groups across Central Highlands and other communities beyond the region. Audience members are invited to the lecture of NS Khong Phai\, the sound artist behind Tung’s video work\, to learn about his research on the social context of sound and instruments in Southeast Asia. This lecture will be followed by a participatory performance workshop\, where attendees will be able to collectively recreate the soundscape of the Highlands through improvisation and the use of insect noises\, bamboo flutes\, mouth organs\, gongs\, modern instruments\, and more.\n\n𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁\nNS Khong Phai is a musician and researcher who works with various musical instruments from Southeast Asia. He researches folk music\, and has learned about traditional musical instruments from local artists in Southeast Asia. In Vietnam in particular\, he learned folk music from notable musicians of various ethnic communities such as Kinh\, Cham\, Jrai\, Ede\, Raglai\, Thai\, H’mong\, and more. He owns a diverse collection of folk music instruments\, gathered on various research trips\, that include wind instruments\, reed pipes\, free reed instruments\, percussions\, and strings. His own music idea is to engage these rare instruments in today’s music scene to extend the possibilities of music.

SUMMARY:Do you believe in love after life?
DESCRIPTION:Sự tích trái thơm / Ang Alamat ng Pinya (“the legend of the pineapple”) is on the move\, like it has been for centuries. Originally cultivated as Hoyriri by the Tupinambá people in present-day Brazil and Paraguay\, the pineapple’s uprootings through Portuguese colonization of South America have left traces in Southeast Asian mythology\, motherly sermons and memories of a million eyes that shall remember what they see. \nThe hybrid performance “Do you believe in love after life?” will take place in Sài Gòn (Việt Nam) and Köln (Germany) at the same time\, departing from slippery confines of time\, space and body into the possibilities of their ruptures. \nAnika Baluran Schäfer\, Thủy-Tiên Nguyễn\, Quang Nguyễn-Xuân and Việt Đức Phạm\, four queer performance artists with Southeast Asian heritage in Germany\, telling stories through performance\, poetry\, moving images\, karaoke and video art.

SUMMARY:RawGround 2024
DESCRIPTION:The world has been sustained by one mechanism; that which moves our city\, our body\, our thoughts and existence – Breathing. RawGround 2024 is a ten-day event of curated film screenings\, artist talks and workshops connected by the theme: Breathing – the movement of space. The first three days feature activities that are held on site\, while the rest of RawGround will be made available for digital engagement for one week. With twelve short films by six local and international artists of diverse disciplines\, the event will discuss their works in a series of public talks and multi-disciplinary workshops\, cultivating a space for creative discourse for the wider audience. \nThe event takes form with each artist exploring the various spaces in our lives that are shaped by breath; how does the cityscape ‘suffocate’ us in this fast-paced society? How do we navigate such evolving landscapes and still hold on to our identity? What do our bodies remember and how do our senses guide and connect us? What beauty in life can we find in our last breath? These are some of the themes investigated in the twelve films.

Alone it sings the same refrain – but who listens? \nPlaywright: Danial Matin\nDirector: Grace Kalaiselvi\nActors: Suhaili Safari & Shahid Nasheer \nFragments of a Singaporean Hainanese \nAt the opening of a new exhibition on the Hainanese community in Singapore\, memories are excavated through the stories of three Hainanese immigrants of different generations\, their connections to an island they left for another\, and the sea that connects them. \nPlaywright: Wang Liansheng\nDirector: Lim Shien Hian\nActors: Jalyn Han\, Hang Qian Chou\, Rino Junior John\, Mitchell Fang

SUMMARY:SEA AiR – Studio Residencies for Southeast Asian Artists in the European Union: Passages
DESCRIPTION:Emerging ASEAN artists will display their new works\, dabbling in video\, sound and virtual reality installations\, at an exhibition that caps the second cycle of a joint art programme between Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and the European Union (EU) Delegation to Singapore. \nThis is the second exhibition under SEA AiR – Studio Residencies for Southeast Asian Artists in the European Union\, a programme developed by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) and funded by the European Union that positions Singapore as a hub for artistic exchange between the EU and Southeast Asia. \nTitled Passages\, the exhibition features Southeast Asian artists Ms Priyageetha Dia (Singapore)\, Ms Ngoc Nau (Vietnam) and Mr Saroot Supasuthivech (Thailand). \nThe artworks in Passages are inspired by the artists’ three-month-long residencies in Europe earlier this year. SUMMARY:Pop Group: An Improvised Musical
DESCRIPTION:You know pop music. You’ve watched musicals. You might have even caught a couple of pop musicals. But what about an unscripted pop musical? \nIn the 90s and early 2000s\, boy bands and girl groups reigned supreme. Everyone knew their music\, everyone had a favourite member\, and everyone had an opinion on which pop group was the best. These bands were world famous. But behind the saccharine pop ditties and carefully manicured looks were young artistes struggling with the demands of superstardom. And for every band that made it\, there were a hundred more which fell by the wayside. \nJoin Les Musicables as we explore the ins and outs of pop superstardom in an hour-long improvised musical that will tickle your funny bone and warm your heart\, with music and lyrics completely made up on the spot\, inspired by suggestions from the audience.

SUMMARY:The Long Gaze: Prints and Ceramics by Chua Chon Hee
DESCRIPTION:🍂 Opening with the artist in attendance is on Saturday\, 28 October 2023\, 3 – 5pm. All are welcome! \nAC43 Gallery is proud to present the latest solo exhibition of local multidisciplinary artist Chua Chon Hee. The exhibition features a selection of 25 monotype prints accomplished by the artist between 2013 – 2023 and 8 newly-completed ceramic sculptures. \nThe Long Gaze invites audience to dwell in the meditative yet experimental world of Chon Hee’s artistic quest. Her monotype prints thrive on a meaningful collision of shapes and textures\, with some works featuring the contemplative incorporation of actual leaf forms as bled through her press. Parts of their distinct shapes\, organic protrusions and sinewy veins disintegrate and metamorphose into fluid marks and painterly gestures on paper\, imbuing her prints with a spontaneous sense of nature in transformation. \nThis reverence for nature is similarly translated in Chon Hee’s approach with ceramic sculptures. She often utilises a mix of locally-sourced earth as her material\, and strives for earthy tones and natural lines during her throwing and the firing process in her own kilns. These ceramics will be situated in conversation with a series of drawings that capture her observations of natural botanical forms\, of which some found their ways into the\nexpressive qualities of her sculptures. \nAbout the Artist🎨 \nChua Chon Hee (b. 1960\, Singapore) graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with an Advanced Diploma in Western Art in 1982. She is a fine arts educator and a multidisciplinary artist\, and works extensively with printmaking\, ink\, seal-carving\, and ceramic work. Her artistic expressions are formally inspired by the organic and quiet dynamism of nature\, and spiritually rooted in the Buddhist philosophy of ‘The Four Kalpas’ (成住坏空): the cycle of formation\, the cycle of continuance\, the cycle of decline\, and the cycle of disintegration.

SUMMARY:Southeast Asian Arts Forum 2023
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Asian Arts Forum 2023\nSUSTAINABILITY 2.0: CODING THE WORLD THAT WILL REMAKE ITSELF \n3-4 August 2023 \nHosted by Institute of Southeast Asian Arts\nNanyang Academy of Fine Arts\n80 Bencoolen street\,Singapore 189655 \nThe majority of our activity revolves around a cycle of consumption and production\, and this cycle is especially relevant to us operating in the arts and creative sector. Oftentimes\, as primary inhabitants of this earth we feel a sense of entitlement based on the assumption that resources around us are infinite in nature. \nIn rethinking our capacities as creatives for visualizing a process of how one’s thoughts change and adjust; some questions may arise. How can our creative practices help others visualize the transformation process of their thinking? How can we firstly identify\, understand\, interpret\, and predict consumer behaviors which are shaping society? \nThe Southeast Asian Arts Forum 2023 aims to explore this narrative surrounding the cycle of creation and destruction. It aims to look back into our past and find multitudes of possibilities in how we push the boundaries of our practices. We seek creative practices which represent not only the thrive to survive\, but also one which seeks to attain harmony between humans and our surrounding ecology. \nRegister now and be a part of the conversation:\nhttps://seaartforum.nafa.edu.sg/registration \nFollow us on Instagram: @ISEAA_AG_NAFA

SUMMARY:New Scripts Garage August 2023
DESCRIPTION:The New Scripts Garage provides three scripts with considered dramaturgical support in the form of either a facilitated Script Circle or One-on-One Dramaturgy Sessions with our Writer in Residence. \nThe first six eligible scripts received during the Open Call Submissions period will be handed over to the team of readers\, made up of directors\, playwrights\, and dramaturgs\, who will consider the submissions. \nBased on the quality of the script\, its stage of development\, and the writer’s needs as expressed in the application form\, they will then recommend either a Script Circle or one-on-one dramaturgy sessions with our Writer in Residence. \nThe Script Circle will be organised by Centre 42\, who will invite actors\, writers\, directors\, and dramaturgs from a pool of artists we have been working closely with on this programme. The scripts receiving one-on-one dramaturgy will be scheduled directly with our Writer in Residence\, who will read the scripts and provide detailed feedback in discussion with the writer. Scripts that were not shortlisted will receive written feedback from the reading team and writers are welcome to submit subsequent drafts for future iterations. \nThis programme prioritises writer development over polish\, and aims to get the writer excited to work on the next draft of their script\, with a clearer sense of where to go. \nPlease note that this is not a presentational platform. This short-form residency is ideal for playwrights who have a script that they want to take forward to the next draft in the development process.
