SUMMARY:Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine)
DESCRIPTION:Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine) is an immersive and interactive experience combining poetry\, sound\, and light. Part of “Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Interplay” and Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary celebrations\, this event celebrates the rich histories and communities of Waterloo Street. \nWaterloo Street represents Singapore’s diverse heritage\, and Cor Machina explores the connections between communities and the arts\, symbolised by the typewriter as a relic with the poet as its beating heart. The typewriter’s mechanical clatter echoes modern life’s relentless grind\, yet within this noise\, there is beauty—a reminder that even in the machine\, the human heart creates with hope. \nCor Machina captures this playfully\, by inviting participants to explore these themes through creation. Audiences first enter an installation of pre-made prompts that draws from personal\, communal memories and stories of the street. They’re invited to send in an order for a poem to the Proletariat Poetry Factory\, which becomes a meta memory machine. Poets\, musicians\, and artists create new memories and stories from their inputs\, blending them with the street’s past. \nThe work evokes collective remembrance and celebrates the street’s heritage in a contemporary context. The intent is to spark meaningful conversations\, weaving together past and present\, individual and collective experience. This performance is also in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, serving to commemorate our placemaking and memory making on Waterloo Street.

SUMMARY:Southeast Asian Arts Forum 2024 - Way of the Valiant : Paving Art Through War
DESCRIPTION:UOB-NAFA Southeast Asian Arts Forum 2024 will mark its 5th anniversary and this year is held in conjunction with ADPRex\, on 2 August 2024 in Singapore and online. \nIn concord with the theme of precarity\, the 5th edition of the Southeast Asian Arts Forum will once again evaluate questions surrounding the meaningfulness of practice\, the arts\, and our communities amidst periods of uncertainty and conflict. \nFollowing years of post-pandemic uncertainties and in the midst of global efforts in constructing the new normal in our everyday lives\, we are faced yet again with the overwhelming surges of conflict\, violence\, and destruction. \nAmidst these turbulent times\, how we express the pain of loss and the hope for a future without it can be a powerful driving force behind creative output when we collectively begin to heal or work towards healing. \nNow in its fifth edition\, our hybrid Forum includes livestreamed presentations\, performances\, and dialogue to inspire an exploration of Southeast Asian arts and its discourses; facilitating an exchange of knowledge from the community to the classroom and vice versa. \nPresenters come from Lao PDR\, Singapore\, the Philippines\, Thailand \, Vietnam and Myanmar. \nThis event will be held both in person at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts\, and online.\nFor more information\, and to register : https://seaartforum.nafa.edu.sg/registration

SUMMARY:“IKIRO – Be Alive – Returning to the Source” by Takahiro Suzuki
DESCRIPTION:“IKIRO” is a Japanese word that can be translated into English as “Be alive”. \n“IKIRO” was the word that the artist Takahiro Suzuki\, born 1967 in Osaka\, started writing in his diary when he was about 20 years old. It was the word that gave him courage and gave his life meaning to this day. His artistic career began in Tokyo and he created paintings\, sculptures\, installations and performances. But he never really stopped writing “IKIRO” because he realized how much energy there was in the word and the simple act of writing it. 1996 his first encounter with New York to test his possibilities as an artist there. The first “IKIRO” performance took place in New York. Since then\, the artist has written “IKIRO” in very different places all over the world. He met many people of countless ethnicities\, not only in the big cities\, but also in the most remote areas of the world and this was an incredible enrichment for the artist. In a world that is increasingly coming apart at the seams and the latest technologies\, such as AI\, will fundamentally change human coexistence\, the artist wants to return to the feelings he had as a young man and to the word “IKIRO”\, which gave him so much strength and is just as important to the artist today as it was then. \nTakahiro Suzuki – IKIRO Man CV \n2023 “Memory of this planet” Contemporary Art Factory\, Kyoto Japan \n2022 “Sunday Painting” Contemporary Art Factory\, Kyoto Japan / Solo \n2019 “Noise of Silence: Japanese Art Now” Golden Thread Gallery\, Belfast UK \n2016 “IKIRO – Be Alive” Gallery Gen\, Tokyo Japan / Solo \n2014 “IKIRO Museum” Fukuoka Art Museum\, Fukuoka Japan / Solo \n2007 “IKIRO” Künstlerhaus Bethanien / Berlin Germany / Solo \n2001 “IKIRO” Kröller-Müller Museum / Otterlo Holland \n* For more information\, please contact <hello@head-high-second-floor.com>

SUMMARY:𝐇𝐮𝐦 𝐚 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐞 — 𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦
DESCRIPTION:To understand the fascination in sound-making means dissecting the social history of the cacophony and the ‘noise’ makers (or the early forms of musical instruments) that have emerged from the particular relationship between humans and nature. Learning to create sounds is also learning to listen to them.\nTo accompany the visual landscape of Truong Cong Tung’s ‘disoriented garden’\, Sàn Art is pleased to invite our audiences to join the unique aural experience of actively listening to\, and making sounds\, from musical instruments that are shared amongst ethnic groups across Central Highlands and other communities beyond the region. Audience members are invited to the lecture of NS Khong Phai\, the sound artist behind Tung’s video work\, to learn about his research on the social context of sound and instruments in Southeast Asia. This lecture will be followed by a participatory performance workshop\, where attendees will be able to collectively recreate the soundscape of the Highlands through improvisation and the use of insect noises\, bamboo flutes\, mouth organs\, gongs\, modern instruments\, and more.\n\n𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁\nNS Khong Phai is a musician and researcher who works with various musical instruments from Southeast Asia. He researches folk music\, and has learned about traditional musical instruments from local artists in Southeast Asia. In Vietnam in particular\, he learned folk music from notable musicians of various ethnic communities such as Kinh\, Cham\, Jrai\, Ede\, Raglai\, Thai\, H’mong\, and more. He owns a diverse collection of folk music instruments\, gathered on various research trips\, that include wind instruments\, reed pipes\, free reed instruments\, percussions\, and strings. His own music idea is to engage these rare instruments in today’s music scene to extend the possibilities of music.

SUMMARY:Do you believe in love after life?
DESCRIPTION:Sự tích trái thơm / Ang Alamat ng Pinya (“the legend of the pineapple”) is on the move\, like it has been for centuries. Originally cultivated as Hoyriri by the Tupinambá people in present-day Brazil and Paraguay\, the pineapple’s uprootings through Portuguese colonization of South America have left traces in Southeast Asian mythology\, motherly sermons and memories of a million eyes that shall remember what they see. \nThe hybrid performance “Do you believe in love after life?” will take place in Sài Gòn (Việt Nam) and Köln (Germany) at the same time\, departing from slippery confines of time\, space and body into the possibilities of their ruptures. \nAnika Baluran Schäfer\, Thủy-Tiên Nguyễn\, Quang Nguyễn-Xuân and Việt Đức Phạm\, four queer performance artists with Southeast Asian heritage in Germany\, telling stories through performance\, poetry\, moving images\, karaoke and video art.

SUMMARY:RawGround 2024
DESCRIPTION:The world has been sustained by one mechanism; that which moves our city\, our body\, our thoughts and existence – Breathing. RawGround 2024 is a ten-day event of curated film screenings\, artist talks and workshops connected by the theme: Breathing – the movement of space. The first three days feature activities that are held on site\, while the rest of RawGround will be made available for digital engagement for one week. With twelve short films by six local and international artists of diverse disciplines\, the event will discuss their works in a series of public talks and multi-disciplinary workshops\, cultivating a space for creative discourse for the wider audience. \nThe event takes form with each artist exploring the various spaces in our lives that are shaped by breath; how does the cityscape ‘suffocate’ us in this fast-paced society? How do we navigate such evolving landscapes and still hold on to our identity? What do our bodies remember and how do our senses guide and connect us? What beauty in life can we find in our last breath? These are some of the themes investigated in the twelve films.

Beneath the ostentatious luxuries of modern Singapore lie the sea and the land seething in their grief; and as Laurie’s connection to them grows she discovers that this loss is collective and communal. \nPlaywright: Joel Tan\nDirector: Cherilyn Woo\nActors: Julie Wee\, Daniel Jenkins\, Ching Shu Yi\, Serene Chen\, Tysha Khan\, Irsyad Dawood\, Joel Tan \nGhazal of the Banana Tree’s Heart \n\n\nA solitary banana tree remains on the shore\, the sole survivor amongst its compatriots\, lost to the need for the space they occupied; a lone banana tree that is the last repository of the stories of those shores – of fishermen\, turtles and the sea itself. Alone it sings the same refrain – but who listens? \nPlaywright: Danial Matin\nDirector: Grace Kalaiselvi\nActors: Suhaili Safari & Shahid Nasheer \nFragments of a Singaporean Hainanese \nAt the opening of a new exhibition on the Hainanese community in Singapore\, memories are excavated through the stories of three Hainanese immigrants of different generations\, their connections to an island they left for another\, and the sea that connects them. \nPlaywright: Wang Liansheng\nDirector: Lim Shien Hian\nActors: Jalyn Han\, Hang Qian Chou\, Rino Junior John\, Mitchell Fang
