Scroll down to key in payment details and upload supporting documents (invoice).\nCheck the ‘Terms & Conditions’ checkbox.\nClick ‘Submit’.\n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis\nWhy write poetry\, as opposed to fiction\, or a dramatic piece? This question is at the heart of this four-week programme as we unravel the complex impulses and inspirations that go into the poetic pursuit and how these can ignite our writings. \nFor too long\, poetry has been taught and mined for meaning first. As T. S. Eliot says: “Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.” That’s the beautiful power of poetry which can excavate even as your mind has yet to unravel it. \nBy interrogating one’s own motivations and then embracing the poetic imagination\, this series of workshops will take you through the various stages of verse fruition\, from harnessing the initial spark (of hope\, or fear\, or both)\, to examining the armoury of tools for self-expression (through other art forms such as films and music)\, to ascertaining the range of approaches which best steer and keep you on the edge\, and to finally unleashing the poems to the outside world\, come what may. \nEvery week\, participants will be encouraged to write prompt-led poetry\, and share their poems and opinions on each other’s work. \nCourse Objectives\n\nTo introduce participants the joys of appreciating poetry\nTo acquire the basic tenets of poetry and how participants can start writing their own poems via hands-on exercises\nTo learn from other art forms such as films and music and be sensitised to worldly inspirations\n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\nAppreciate the artistic richness of poetry\nEnhance your writing skills through exercises and sharing sessions\nExplore multifarious creative outlets through other art forms and expand your creative repertoire\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme Itinerary\nFirst Session: THE SPARK (17 February 2024)\nHow does an idea for a poem come about? How does one allow an embryo of a feeling\, a concept\, or an issue\, to evolve and develop? This session delves into the factors to consider when trying to give voice to a spark. Whether it’s a memory\, a person\, or an artificial prompt\, it can help you to confront the genuine root for that poetic investigation\, and how we can start afresh\, abuzz\, ready for all possibilities. \nSecond Session: THE ARMOURY (24 February 2024)\nYou’ve got an iota of an idea\, but where do we go from here? This session introduces the formal strategies – form\, rhythm\, imagery – which anchor your poetic expression. Aside from the tried-and-tested\, we will also get to learn from other artforms such as films and music\, and know the more experimental\, and outre projects which can revise and enrich our notions of what poetry can be. \nThird Session: THE EXPOSURE (2 March 2024)\nWhen is a poem done? This session looks at the hard but essential task of knowing when and how to end a poem\, and as a collection\, how to structure and sequence one’s manuscript. \nFourth Session: THE VULNERABILITY (9 March 2024)\nHow do you know if your poem is good enough to let it out? This is where rigorous editing\, self-critique and a good hide (thick skin) will come in handy. This session will involve you to stand apart from your work\, examine the pitfalls\, kill your darlings. It will end in a poetry recital where participants will share their takeaways and their newly-minted poetry. \n\n\n\n\nProgramme Details:\nDate: 17 & 24 February\, 2 & 9 March 2024\, Saturday\nTime: 10.00 am – 1.00 pm\nVenue: SBC Training Room\, Goodman Arts Centre\,\nBlk E\, #03-32 (Directions below in FAQ section)\n\n\n\n\nAbout trainer:\nYeow Kai Chai is a poet\, fiction writer\, and editor. SUMMARY:Silent Moon - an evening of music and poetry
DESCRIPTION:While modern music has rightly been considered in many ways as breaking away from the musical past\, it certainly has not fully escaped the influence of what has come before. Juxtaposing three modern works for violin-viola duo by composers Quincy Porter\, Augusta Read Thomas and Darius Milhaud against Mozart’s Duo in G major\, K.423. Silent Moon explores the subtle stylistic relationships between composers who worked (or are working) more than a century apart. The evening will also feature poetry readings that are curated by local writers Audrey Tan and Julius Li\, which trace analogous stylistic relationships in the literary arts. Through interplay of the selected poems’ rhythm\, form and content alongside the pieces of the concert programme\, the performance invites the audience to consider to what extent music may be considered in parallel to speech\, recapturing an 18th-century European aesthetic that was widely understood in Mozart’s day and bringing it into contact with the present. \nProgramme \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, Duo in G Major for violin and viola\, K. 423 (1783) \n I. Allegro \n II. Adagio \n III. Rondeau (Allegro) \nDarius Milhaud\, Sonatine for violin and viola\, Op. 226 (1941) \n I. Décidé \n II. Lent \n III. Fugue (Vif) \nAugusta Read Thomas\, Silent Moon (2006) \n I. Still: Soulful and Resonant \n II. Energetic: Majestic and Dramatic \n III. Suspended: Lyrical and Chant-like — “When twofold silence was the song of love.” \nQuincy Porter; Duo For Violin and Viola (1952-54) \n I. Allegretto \n II. Lento \n III. Allegro molto \nMusic performed by: \nTan Tiag Yi (Violin) \nCindy Ow (Viola) \nPoetry curated by: \nAudrey Tan \nJulius Li \nTicketing: \nConcession tickets costing $21 each are available for full-time students\, full-time national servicemen (NSF)\, senior citizens (60 years and above) and practicing artists. All other patrons should purchase general admission tickets for $26. \nAdmission Rules: \nNo children below the age of 6 will be admitted. Concession ticket holders should bring proof of their status\, such as a driver’s license or student pass\, as random checks may be conducted at the venue. Refunds will not be granted to ticket-holders who do not meet these admission requirements. \nLatecomers will only be admitted at suitable breaks. Patrons may choose to sit anywhere during the concert\, except on seats which are reserved for VIPs and guests. We reserve the right to ask parents to bring children out of the hall should they be disruptive during the performance. There is no admission without a ticket. \nPhotography/Video Recording Rules: \nPhotography and videography by audience members is not allowed during the performance. However\, audience members may take photos during curtain calls. We reserve the right to ask audience members to leave the hall should they not comply with these rules.

SUMMARY:SIFA 2023: THERE IS NO FUTURE IN NOSTALGIA
DESCRIPTION:Date: 20 May Saturday & 21 May Sunday\nDate: 27 May Saturday & 28 May Sunday\nTime: 3pm & 8pm \nVenue: 42 Waterloo Street\nTickets: $25 \nCentre 42 presents a collection of new performances devised by its resident artists and invited guests. Titled “there is no future in nostalgia\,” after Arthur Yap’s iconic poem about the fatigue of urban renewal\, we invite artists to consider the tensions between new and old\, the technocratic and the civic—and consider how they come to bear on the art of theatre-making. \nSIFA X: THERE IS NO FUTURE IN NOSTALGIA comprises: The Vault\, with pieces drawn from practitioners’ memories of theatre in the 90s; Studio\, a series of staged readings of new short works by our resident playwrights; and Headline Acts\, an open-format evening where writers present short dramatic pieces in response to archival headlines. \nImage courtesy of Centre 42
