SUMMARY:Open Call for Writers – Sound Plot: ULU
DESCRIPTION:Sound Plot is Centre 42’s audio plays series\, each edition drawing on a certain geographic area in Singapore. This edition\, produced in collaboration with the NTU Museum\, zooms in on Jurong West and its surrounding area\, where the university is located. \nThis is an invitation for two writers to respond through audio drama to this fascinating area\, guided by the curatorial prompt “Ulu”. Selected writers will need to be available for an intensive 3-week script development phase in October 2024\, and will work with a director during the recording and production process in November & December 2024. Audio production will be done in collaboration with Artwave Studio\, and slated for release online in January 2025. \nThis is a paid opportunity\, and commissioned writers will receive $1\,000 each. \n\n\n\n\nTO APPLY\n\n\n\n\nApplication period runs from 5 August 2024 (12pm) to 15 September 2024 (12pm). Please complete this online form to submit the following: \n\nYour updated CV. Highlight your experience in writing for / working in the audio medium.\nA writing sample of no more than 10 pages. This should be from an existing stage play\, audio play\, or screenplay.\nYour proposal for a 15-minute audio play\, which must:\n\nrespond to the curatorial prompt below\ntell us about the curiosity\, fascination\, or other impulse that draws you to this work\, and how you imagine this play might delve into these ideas\ndescribe your ideas for the narrative\, characters\, and world that the play takes place in\nbe no more than 2 pages.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCURATORIAL PROMPT\n\n\n\n\nULU \nJurong West tends to be the butt of our “ulu” jokes. After all\, it’s where we seem to tuck away things we’d rather not see: cemeteries\, a man-made island heaving with chemicals\, and secretive military bases. \nBut if we look beneath this industrial veneer – always building\, always reclaiming – what other stories might we find? Here thrum large swathes of undeveloped secondary forest\, rewilding over the memories of the gambier plantations that kickstarted Singapore’s endless development. Here\, the coast hugs the mouth of the Straits of Johor\, where we can still imagine our deep connections to ancient kingdoms. Here lies a large university town\, filled with utopian architecture that tells a story about a world that could be so much better and kinder to the earth. And here lie the hopes and dreams of new families looking to build lives in one of the fastest-growing residential zones on the island\, each built-to-order flat remaking the “ulu” face of the Western region. \nWe invite you to write a play that reckons in any way with these ideas. Whether you’re curious about the many layers of history in Jurong West; have a story to tell about the diverse range of people who live\, work\, and play here; or have a speculative tale about its future\, we want to hear your ideas! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSCHEDULE\n\n\n\n\nThe turnaround for these audio plays will be quick and intensive. Selected writers will need to be available for the phases outlined below and commit to the duration of the project. \n5 August – 15 September: \n\nOpen Call for Proposals\nPrepare your documents and apply via this form\n\n20 September: \n\nSelected writers will be notified\n\n1 October – 21 October: \n\nScript development intensive\nWriters will need to be available to turn in drafts of their script\, engage in discussions with script dramaturg\, director\, sound designer and producer\n\n27 October – 10 December:\nAudio pre and production phase \n\nWriters will need to be ready for script edits\, rehearsals with voice actors and director\, and participate in the recording process\n\n6 January – 17 February: \n\nAudio post-production phase: reviewing of edits and final publishing\n\n20 January – 28 February \n\nLaunch of Audio Plays\, starting from 20 January 2025

SUMMARY:Nooks and Crannies\, a writing workshop about hidden places
DESCRIPTION:𝗡𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀\, 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 \n“small spaces in something or parts of something that are difficult to reach”  \n(𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺)  \nA tiny café\, a fantasy game world\, an online writing group. An attic with yellow wallpaper\, and a room of one’s own.  \nWhere do we go to get away\, if only for a while? Who do we become\, in these hidden spaces\, that we might not be able to\, in other areas of our lives?  \nCan these protected spaces heal and uplift\, or can their insularity turn them into troubling echo chambers? When is it liberating to get away from the world\, and when does escapism become its own prison? \nIn this four-week workshop\, we will explore the nature of a hidden space\, what it might signify to us\, and how it might transform us — for better or for worse. We will examine the question of how to write about space — its politics and materiality\, its personal as well as sociological significance. \nThis workshop is suitable for writers of poetry\, prose fiction and creative non-fiction. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants can expect to produce up to six pages of work\, or rework a draft that they have previously completed.  \n𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: 1st\, 8th\, 15th Jun\, (one week break) and 29th Jun 2024  \n𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: 9.30am – 12.30pm on Saturdays    \n𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Your MOTHER Gallery\, 26A Rowell Road. A Drop. A Deluge: A Period Tragicomedy)\, Vinita Ramani\, and Griselda Gabriele (Creators of Bearing Witness) discuss how exploring their shared experience of womanhood has empowered difficult conversations to be had through comics\, whether it’s through quirky humour or raw honesty. \nCome down to Book Bar on 8 March\, 7:30 pm as we share stories about friendship\, community\, and all the messy and magnificent parts of being a woman. \nDE Shorts titles including A Drip. A Drop. A Deluge: A Period Tragicomedy and Bearing Witness will also be available for purchase and signing by the creators. Light bites and drinks will be available for purchase as well. \nAbout the Panellists\nVinita Ramani is a writer and editor. This question is at the heart of this four-week programme as we unravel the complex impulses and inspirations that go into the poetic pursuit and how these can ignite our writings. \nFor too long\, poetry has been taught and mined for meaning first. As T. S. Eliot says: “Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.” That’s the beautiful power of poetry which can excavate even as your mind has yet to unravel it. \nBy interrogating one’s own motivations and then embracing the poetic imagination\, this series of workshops will take you through the various stages of verse fruition\, from harnessing the initial spark (of hope\, or fear\, or both)\, to examining the armoury of tools for self-expression (through other art forms such as films and music)\, to ascertaining the range of approaches which best steer and keep you on the edge\, and to finally unleashing the poems to the outside world\, come what may. \nEvery week\, participants will be encouraged to write prompt-led poetry\, and share their poems and opinions on each other’s work. \nCourse Objectives\n\nTo introduce participants the joys of appreciating poetry\nTo acquire the basic tenets of poetry and how participants can start writing their own poems via hands-on exercises\nTo learn from other art forms such as films and music and be sensitised to worldly inspirations\n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\nAppreciate the artistic richness of poetry\nEnhance your writing skills through exercises and sharing sessions\nExplore multifarious creative outlets through other art forms and expand your creative repertoire\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme Itinerary\nFirst Session: THE SPARK (17 February 2024)\nHow does an idea for a poem come about? How does one allow an embryo of a feeling\, a concept\, or an issue\, to evolve and develop? This session delves into the factors to consider when trying to give voice to a spark. Whether it’s a memory\, a person\, or an artificial prompt\, it can help you to confront the genuine root for that poetic investigation\, and how we can start afresh\, abuzz\, ready for all possibilities. \nSecond Session: THE ARMOURY (24 February 2024)\nYou’ve got an iota of an idea\, but where do we go from here? This session introduces the formal strategies – form\, rhythm\, imagery – which anchor your poetic expression. Aside from the tried-and-tested\, we will also get to learn from other artforms such as films and music\, and know the more experimental\, and outre projects which can revise and enrich our notions of what poetry can be. \nThird Session: THE EXPOSURE (2 March 2024)\nWhen is a poem done? This session looks at the hard but essential task of knowing when and how to end a poem\, and as a collection\, how to structure and sequence one’s manuscript. \nFourth Session: THE VULNERABILITY (9 March 2024)\nHow do you know if your poem is good enough to let it out? This is where rigorous editing\, self-critique and a good hide (thick skin) will come in handy. This session will involve you to stand apart from your work\, examine the pitfalls\, kill your darlings. It will end in a poetry recital where participants will share their takeaways and their newly-minted poetry. \n\n\n\n\nProgramme Details:\nDate: 17 & 24 February\, 2 & 9 March 2024\, Saturday\nTime: 10.00 am – 1.00 pm\nVenue: SBC Training Room\, Goodman Arts Centre\,\nBlk E\, #03-32 (Directions below in FAQ section)\n\n\n\n\nAbout trainer:\nYeow Kai Chai is a poet\, fiction writer\, and editor.
