SUMMARY:DnA Fest
DESCRIPTION:DnA Fest\, unfolding in Singapore from 16-19 and 23-26 July 2025\, offers a fresh and dynamic interpretation of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Conceived by Ong Keng Sen\, this multifaceted event blends opera with contemporary expressions through three distinct components. The House of Janus presents a deeply personal documentary film\, while Dido & Aeneas The Belindas reimagines the opera with the energy of drag artistry and ballroom vogue\, featuring performers from Singapore and Japan. The experience culminates on select nights with The Afterparty\, promising a vibrant fusion of music and performance. \nThrough film\, live show\, and nightlife\, DnA Fest explores the core themes of love\, abandonment\, and transformation found in the opera\, offering a powerful contemporary lens. The festival not only showcases innovative artistic collaborations but also marks the launch of The AGEncy Fund on 10 July. This initiative will support the creative endeavors of artists aged 60 and above\, adding another layer of significance to this unique and boundary-pushing event.

SUMMARY:T:>Works: Living Soil Series — A Film Double Bill: Sandcastles (2024) and Moving Earth (2024)
DESCRIPTION:T:>Works introduces the Living Soil Series as part of CoThink Lab\, kicking off with a double-bill film screening:Sandcastles (2024) by Carin Leong and Moving Earth (2024) by Ian Mun. \n  \nWhat do we consider as home? The constructed complex we live in? The land where we make our livelihood?  \n  \n‘Sandcastles’ (2024) by Carin Leong draws parallels between a lost 19th-century Michigan town swallowed by sand and modern Singapore\, built on reclaimed land\, highlighting the ephemeral nature of human creations. ‘Moving Earth’ (2024) by Ian Mun is a nostalgic look at the Ground-Up Initiative in Singapore as they relocate\, celebrating their connection to the earth and its importance of soil in our lives. \n  \nWe invite the audience to participate in a pre-show activity to pen down stories of relocation and land reclamation. There will also be a post-film panel discussion featuring ‘Sandcastles’ producer Martin Loh\, ‘Moving Earth’ director Ian Mun\, and Bing Yu from Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) — a non-profit society dedicated to fostering sustainable kampung culture through active community participation.

SUMMARY:Documentary Filmmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is not your average documentary workshop. It’s not about the latest gear\, or the trendiest topic\, or how to make your video go viral. This is about how life is often stranger than fiction\, what the functions and techniques of documentary are\, and how to tell a compelling non-fiction story for the screen. \nThe process of ideating\, producing\, filming\, editing your own documentary\, plus overcoming the various challenges that will come along with making a documentary\, will be the craft journey you will embark upon as a class across the 6 sessions. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have made a documentary that you can truly call your own\, and present it to the class in a film screening. \nThere will also be a screening of films by the class which is open to friends and family at the end of the workshop. \nWorkshop Fee: $950 (eligible for use of SkillsFuture Credit) \nInstructor: Jessica Lee \nPlease register via the form on our website.

SUMMARY:Objectifs Film Club X Walter Benjamin Reading Group: Dance Of A Humble Atheist
DESCRIPTION:Objectifs Film Club x Walter Benjamin Reading Group: Dance of a Humble Atheist by Toh Hun Ping x One Way Street by Walter Benjamin \nFri\, 28 Feb 2025 | 7.30pm – 9pm\nVenue: Objectifs Workshop Space \nOrganised in collaboration with the NUS Malay Studies Department \nFree admission\, please RSVP here. \nPlease note that as this is a film screening x reading group\, participants will be required to finish the reading beforehand in order to partake in the programme. You may access the reading at this link. \n\nWalter Benjamin’s One-Way Street is an essayistic voyage of leaps\, disjuncture\, misleads\, and occasional dead-ends. A bewildering read\, likely to be influenced by Surrealism in the 1920s\, it comprises meditative fragments of extreme brevity\, cryptic ellipses\, and satisfying length on a range of subjects and formats – dreams\, cities\, childhood\, diary\, writing advice. One can start reading back to front\, from the middle then either way\, it doesn’t matter. The fragments of prose hang together like a collage\, which may only make ‘sense’ if we appreciate what collage does and the effect it creates. Headings with the name of a city do not tell us much about the place\, upsetting the relationship between ‘title’ and ‘content’. \nWe may find similar experimentations with form and content in the film Dance of the Humble Atheist by Toh Hun Ping\, in which the filmmaker meditates on ‘death\, faith\, the possibility of the afterlife\, the natural world\, consciousness\, and time.’ A larger question we will explore in our discussion is: Where\, when\, why\, and how do we make space for and embrace incoherence\, absences\, empty spaces\, non-linearity\, nonsense\, and irrationality? Engaging the essay and film as companion pieces\, this Film Club x Reading Group session invites readers to unpick and unravel our taken-for-granted notions of ‘form’ that structure our experience of art and culture. \nThe discussion will focus on the following ‘fragments’ from One-Way Street: No. 113\, Chinese curios\, Gloves\, Mexican embassy\, Construction site\, Teaching aid\, Post no bills\, No. 13\, Arc lamp\, Loggia\, Travel souvenirs\, Polyclinic\, Legal Protection of the needy\, To the Planetarium. Access the reading here. \nThe session will be led by Alicia Izharuddin. \n\nWalter Benjamin was a German-Jewish writer and philosopher whose influential work on art\, history\, modernity\, and capitalism has become a protean and prophetic lens for our collective past\, present and future. Although he wrote mainly about the ruins and emerging cultures of Paris and Berlin\, the essence of his arguments about how we write and experience the historical present\, how we experience art\, and how we must engage with the relentless onslaught of capitalism are relevant to us living at a time defined by both ruin and perpetual states of emergence. \nKey themes that animate Walter Benjamin’s well-known writings can be appreciated in Southeast Asian filmmaking. The Objectifs Film Club x Walter Benjamin Reading Group is a space for re-reading Benjamin’s work through Southeast Asian films about cultural memory\, collective pasts and futures\, post-colonialism legacies\, and affect in an age of information overload. \n\nAbout Dance of a Humble Atheist\nAn existential journey of semi-abstract imagery inspired by the filmmaker’s personal ruminations on death\, spiritual faith\, nature and the cosmos. From the funeral of a dying being\, a wondrous cornucopia after life\, to a phosphoric revolt of consciousness. This silent film is created entirely via frame-by-frame animation\, using digital scans of over six hundred individually sculpted ceramic reliefs. With production support from Pinch Ceramics Studio (Singapore). \nAbout the facilitator\nAlicia Izharuddin is currently a Senior Visiting Fellow in Gender and Sexuality at the National University of Singapore where she teaches courses on film and gender in Southeast Asia. She is committed to the public engagement of academia through organising reading groups in bookshops and women’s rights organisations. An interdisciplinary scholar in gender studies by training\, she has taught at the University of Malaya\, Harvard University\, and held prestigious fellowships at the Harvard Divinity School and Leiden University. \nAbout the filmmaker\nToh Hun Ping is a video artist\, experimental filmmaker and film researcher. His video works explore and express themes of mental instability\, alternate realities\, resistance and existence. He employs experimental moving image-making methods from film-scratching\, bleaching photographs\, merging materials (mud\, meat\, nails) with video stills\, to stop-motion animation with ceramic reliefs. The works have been presented in exhibitions and film festivals in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Taipei\, Paris\, Seoul\, Tokyo\, Boston and Bangkok. As a film researcher\, he is investigating the history of filmmaking in early-mid 20th century Singapore\, and has served as researcher-writer and video editor for projects organised by The National Museum of Singapore and Asian Film Archive (‘State of Motion’). He also started the Singapore Film Locations Archive\, a private video collection of films made in and about Singapore\, and runs a website about the intrigues of old Singapore film locations (sgfilmlocations.com). \nAbout the NUS Malay Studies Department\nThe NUS Malay Studies department aims to promote intellectual awareness to the concerns of the globalised Malay world through world-class teaching and research. It is home to the interdisciplinary synthesis of local\, decolonial\, and western approaches to Malay cultures of Southeast Asia and beyond. The department also maintains strong links with the local community in terms of policy studies\, public intellectual engagement and social service. \nAbout the Objectifs Film Library\nThe Objectifs Film Library is an initiative by Objectifs that aims to be a resource for film lovers in Singapore and the region. Currently\, the collection is focused on short films from Southeast Asia. \nUsers will be able to rent some of these films to watch in the comfort of their homes\, and a wider selection is available exclusively at our centre. \nAccess the Objectifs Film Library here.

SUMMARY:Ethos Nights: Faceri
DESCRIPTION:Faceri is a night of film and spoken word co-presented by the Asian Film Archive and Ethos Books. The second of the Ethos Nights series\, this event features three short films and four writers\, tracing the lines of making and unmaking evoked by the etymology of the word “fashion”\, from the old French “Façon\,” meaning “a making\, style\, appearance\, behavior”. Through material culture we style ourselves\, but also create a living nexus of identity that people can don. This in turn stems from Latin “faceri”: the act of doing\, making\, creating; the act of birth itself. Through the interweaving of film and spoken word\, Faceri will explore materiality\, identity\, and craft. \n📅 Date/Time: 8 Feb 2025\, 5.30pm\n📍Venue: Oldham Theatre \nProgramme: \n🎥 In Pursuit of Temples in the Sky (Gagandeep Singh\, 2021)\nWith live narration by Shawn Hoo \n🎥 A million Threads (Thu Thu Shein\, 2006)\nWith textual responses by Jennifer Anne Champion and Prasanthi Ram followed by an improvised poem co-created with the audience by Shivram Gopinath \n🎥 Roach Love (Jacen Tan\, 2022)\nWith an exquisite corpse \nThis event will feature Shawn Hoo\, Jennifer Anne Champion\, Prasanthi Ram and Shivram Gopinath.

SUMMARY:comma 2025: PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:comma\, indicating an unfinished sentence\, reflects the fluidity of the arts and never-ending pursuit for excellence among Singapore’s young creatives. \n \nFrom 31 December 2024 to 26 January 2025\, comma is a Creative Arts festival that celebrates emerging artists while bringing the spotlight to Singapore’s budding creative scene at the Somerset Belt.  \nThe equation “PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE” invites contemplation on how the echoes of the past resonate in the present\, shaping the trajectory of what is yet to come.    \nThis theme invites artists to delve into this interconnectedness by unearthing forgotten narratives\, evolving perspectives and envisioning the influence of the past and present on our future. Drawing inspiration from tradition\, heritage and ritualism\, artists are encouraged to experiment with new techniques and unconventional themes and materials\, creating works that not only mirror our current reality but also provide glimpses into the trajectory of where we are headed.    \nAudiences will experience works that pay homage to our roots while offering fresh and contemporary interpretations\, weaving together the threads of past\, present\, and future.

SUMMARY:Lecture & Screening: Unearthing the "Blue Frontier": The International Seabed Authority's New Mining Code and the Costs of Deep-Sea Mining
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, deep-sea minerals like polymetallic nodules containing copper and cobalt have gained attention as a potential resource for green energy technologies such as batteries\, computers\, and electric cars. Found mainly on the international seabed (as well as within territorial waters)\, these nodules are regulated by the International Seabed Authority (ISA)\, which will finalize a mining code in 2025 that determines future deep-sea exploration and exploitation. Following Singapore’s Deep-Sea Mining Act of 2015\, Ocean Mineral Singapore\, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore and Marine conducted two deep-sea expeditions to the Pacific Ocean. While some argue this extraction is crucial for the green transition\, Pacific nations warn of its harmful impact on marine biodiversity and climate change. This lecture will explore the environmental and societal implications of deep-sea mining\, starting with a screening of the film Blue Peril\, 2022 (INTERPRT / Professor Nabil Ahmed\, Deep Sea Mining Campaign & Ozeanien-Dialog)\, a science-based visual investigation using architectural and spatial analysis to model the potentially irreversible effects of deep-sea mining in the Pacific Ocean. Paired with testimonies from Pacific Island communities\, this film addresses the impacts on their economies and ways of life. Following this\, Tara Maria Davenport (Assistant Professor\, Faculty of Law\, National University of Singapore and Deputy Director\, Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law) and Jonathan Galka (PhD Candidate\, History of Science Department\, Harvard University) will discuss the historic mining code and its future impact on resource extraction\, drawing from legal\, historical\, and community perspectives. \n🔗 Register here \n⏰ Tuesday\, 10 December 2024\, 6:30 – 8:00 pm\n📍 The Hall\, NTU CCA Singapore\nBlock 6 Lock Road\n#01-09 Gillman Barracks\nS108934 \n🖼️ Model of the seabed plume in the Nauru NORI D licence area using Open Drift. SUMMARY:Plan 75 x ArtsWok Collaborative Fundraiser Screening
DESCRIPTION:This December\, the award-winning Japanese film Plan 75 is back on the big screen for a limited run since its release in 2022. Hailed for its sensitivity and haunting premise\, the film provides a lens to examine the place of seniors in a rapidly ageing society. Plan 75 will be accompanied by the touching short film Float Free (2024)\, where a trio of senior women find joy and a new lease of life from learning to swim at Yishun Swimming Complex. Both films offer an incisive and moving portrait of ageing\, community\, and the value of human connection. This unique pairing is brought together by non-profit arts organisation ArtsWok Collaborative in partnership with indie cinema The Projector.  \n  \nPlan 75 \nDirected by Chie Hayakawa \nIn Japanese with English subtitles \nRated NC16 \n  \nSet in a parallel dystopian Japan\, Plan 75 explores the introduction of a radical nationwide programme for voluntary euthanasia to deal with a super-aged society and the larger psychological repercussions that come with it. The film is a contemplative response to loneliness\, human dignity\, and what it really means to live. \n  \nFloat Free  \nCo-created by Chia Yim Fong\, Koh Tong Cheng\, and Michelle Sim with Salty Xi Jie Ng \nIn Mandarin with English and Mandarin subtitles \nRated G \n  \nFloat Free follows three seniors who overcome their fear of water to learn swimming at an older age. In the process\, they discover a shared community\, the freedom water provides in old age\, and reflections on life and death. The short film was collaboratively scripted by senior collaborators and the lead artist of a recent project under ArtsWok Collaborative’s flagship programme Both Sides\, Now.  \n  \nMembers of the public will have a chance to catch Plan 75 and Float Free in the cinema on 7 and 15 December only at The Projector at Cineleisure. Tickets will be available from 15 November 2024. The Projector will be donating a portion of ticket sales from both screenings to ArtsWok Collaborative in support of the work they do in engaging and developing communities. In these lands\, singing takes various forms and is carried out in locations such as bars\, KTVs\, homes\, cafes\, weddings\, and funerals. The communal act is not only entertaining and fun\, it can also provide a sense of comfort and familiarity. \nExploring the social impact of this beloved activity\, Karaoke! Playing the ♯ and ♭ presents short films where realities\, dreams\, and fears converge with the act of singing. Whether as a form of escapism\, the yearning for something more\, or a chance to dance the night away – these films invite you to experience the rhythm of their world. \nThis screening is part of Objectifs’ new quarterly film programme\, Now Showing\, which highlights the artistic\, playful\, and expressive form of short and medium length films. SUMMARY:Samsara – A Cine-Concert
DESCRIPTION:What is one willing to give up to fulfil their insatiable desires? \n  \nFollowing the internationally acclaimed Setan Jawa—which premiered in 2017 to a sold-out crowd at Esplanade—respected Indonesian director Garin Nugroho returns for the world premiere of Samsara\, a stunning cinematic experience that marries film with live music. \n  \nSamsara follows the story a man from an impoverished family who is rejected by the wealthy parents of the woman he loves. He strikes a bargain with the Monkey King\, performing a dark ritual to gain wealth but in the process\, curses his wife and child into suffering.  Rooted in Indonesian mysticism\, this is a universal narrative about the insatiable hunger to be what one is not\, and the boundaries one is prepared to breach to realise this. \n  \nLike its predecessor Setan Jawa\, Samsara is a “cine-concert” that draws from German black-and-white films from the 1920s as well as wayang kulit (traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry). While the former featured an evocative silent film accompanied by live gamelan music and a Western classical orchestra\, Samsara forgoes the orchestra for vibrant\, live electronic music. The production marries this electronic soundscape with traditional Balinese performance elements like the gamelan orchestra\, traditional dance\, masks and wayang kulit. The film and live performance stars two Asia-Pacific luminaries of the stage and screen\, Indonesian film actor Ario Bayu and Indonesian-Australian dancer Juliet Widyasari Burnett. \n  \nUnder the bold visionary eye of Garin Nugroho and the exceptional work of a powerhouse creative team\, Samsara promises to be a bold and memorable cinematic experience\, seamlessly bringing together the art forms\, nuances\, and traditions of Indonesia’s past and present. \n  \nProduction Credits\nLead Actors: Ario Bayu & Juliet Widyasari Burnett\nSupporting Actors: Gus Bang Sada\, Valentine Payen-Wicaksono\, Siko Setyanto\, I Wayan Wira Kusuma\, Aryani Willems & Cok Sawitri \n  \nDirector: Garin Nugroho\nMusic Composer: Wayan Sudirana & Gabber Modus Operandi\nMusicians: Gabber Modus Operandi & Gamelan Yuganada \n  \nA commission by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay\nProduced by Cineria Films\, Garin Workshop & Lynx Films\nWith the support of Ministry of Culture\, Research and Technology Republic of Indonesia and Yayasan Puri Kauhan Ubud \n  \nProducer: Gita Fara & Aldo Swastia\nExecutive Producer: Ario Bayu & Rob O’Hare\nSupervising Producer: Jala Adolphus\nChoreographer: Ida Ayu Wayan Arya Satyani\nCinematographer: Batara Goempar\nCostume Designer: Retno Ratih Damayanti\nProduction Designer: Vida Sylvia\nStage Designer: Iskandar Loedin\nSound Recordist and Designer: Trisno\nEditor: Beck\nCo-producers: Rai Pendet\, Batara Goempar\nLine Producer: Ineke Bajalaras
