SUMMARY:Samsara – A Cine-Concert
DESCRIPTION:What is one willing to give up to fulfil their insatiable desires? \n  \nFollowing the internationally acclaimed Setan Jawa—which premiered in 2017 to a sold-out crowd at Esplanade—respected Indonesian director Garin Nugroho returns for the world premiere of Samsara\, a stunning cinematic experience that marries film with live music. \n  \nSamsara follows the story a man from an impoverished family who is rejected by the wealthy parents of the woman he loves. He strikes a bargain with the Monkey King\, performing a dark ritual to gain wealth but in the process\, curses his wife and child into suffering.  Rooted in Indonesian mysticism\, this is a universal narrative about the insatiable hunger to be what one is not\, and the boundaries one is prepared to breach to realise this. \n  \nLike its predecessor Setan Jawa\, Samsara is a “cine-concert” that draws from German black-and-white films from the 1920s as well as wayang kulit (traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry). While the former featured an evocative silent film accompanied by live gamelan music and a Western classical orchestra\, Samsara forgoes the orchestra for vibrant\, live electronic music. The production marries this electronic soundscape with traditional Balinese performance elements like the gamelan orchestra\, traditional dance\, masks and wayang kulit. The film and live performance stars two Asia-Pacific luminaries of the stage and screen\, Indonesian film actor Ario Bayu and Indonesian-Australian dancer Juliet Widyasari Burnett. \n  \nUnder the bold visionary eye of Garin Nugroho and the exceptional work of a powerhouse creative team\, Samsara promises to be a bold and memorable cinematic experience\, seamlessly bringing together the art forms\, nuances\, and traditions of Indonesia’s past and present. \n  \nProduction Credits\nLead Actors: Ario Bayu & Juliet Widyasari Burnett\nSupporting Actors: Gus Bang Sada\, Valentine Payen-Wicaksono\, Siko Setyanto\, I Wayan Wira Kusuma\, Aryani Willems & Cok Sawitri \n  \nDirector: Garin Nugroho\nMusic Composer: Wayan Sudirana & Gabber Modus Operandi\nMusicians: Gabber Modus Operandi & Gamelan Yuganada \n  \nA commission by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay\nProduced by Cineria Films\, Garin Workshop & Lynx Films\nWith the support of Ministry of Culture\, Research and Technology Republic of Indonesia and Yayasan Puri Kauhan Ubud \n  \nProducer: Gita Fara & Aldo Swastia\nExecutive Producer: Ario Bayu & Rob O’Hare\nSupervising Producer: Jala Adolphus\nChoreographer: Ida Ayu Wayan Arya Satyani\nCinematographer: Batara Goempar\nCostume Designer: Retno Ratih Damayanti\nProduction Designer: Vida Sylvia\nStage Designer: Iskandar Loedin\nSound Recordist and Designer: Trisno\nEditor: Beck\nCo-producers: Rai Pendet\, Batara Goempar\nLine Producer: Ineke Bajalaras

SUMMARY:RawGround 2024
DESCRIPTION:The world has been sustained by one mechanism; that which moves our city\, our body\, our thoughts and existence – Breathing. RawGround 2024 is a ten-day event of curated film screenings\, artist talks and workshops connected by the theme: Breathing – the movement of space. The first three days feature activities that are held on site\, while the rest of RawGround will be made available for digital engagement for one week. With twelve short films by six local and international artists of diverse disciplines\, the event will discuss their works in a series of public talks and multi-disciplinary workshops\, cultivating a space for creative discourse for the wider audience. \nThe event takes form with each artist exploring the various spaces in our lives that are shaped by breath; how does the cityscape ‘suffocate’ us in this fast-paced society? How do we navigate such evolving landscapes and still hold on to our identity? What do our bodies remember and how do our senses guide and connect us? What beauty in life can we find in our last breath? These are some of the themes investigated in the twelve films.

SUMMARY:Spinning Connections: Creative Takes on Intangible Cultural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:From food to performing arts\, Southeast Asia’s intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is an important link to our past and intrinsic to our rich cultural identity. To pay homage to the time-honoured traditions and living expressions that define and connect us across the region\, the National Museum of Singapore and the Maybank Foundation will be presenting a series of four original video artworks on the Museum’s LED Wall that showcase creative contemporary responses to the theme of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). \nTitled Spinning Connections: Creative Takes on Intangible Cultural Heritage\, the commissioned artworks were selected from entries submitted through an Open Call exercise held between April to May last year\, to foster collaboration with the artistic community to engage audiences on important contemporary issues. Each artwork highlights an aspect of ICH\, namely food\, dance\, martial arts and storytelling\, while drawing connections to the National Museum’s collection. The artworks bring contemporary resonance to the past and invite visitors to understand the present in different ways.

SUMMARY:Objectifs Film Club: Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford
DESCRIPTION:Objectifs Film Club: Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford\nTue 21 Mar 2023\, 7.30pm to 8.30pm\nVenue: Objectifs Workshop Space \nFree admission\, please RSVP here. \nThe word ‘renewal’ is seldom distant from the collective Singaporean consciousness. Bringing to mind the age-old national narrative of constant progress and development\, where our skills and environment are forever subjected to upgrading\, the beginning of each new year also encloses the word within a more personal sphere as we contemplate changes to old habits and come up with new year resolutions. \nCome join us at our first Film Club session of the year\, which will feature a screening of Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford. This will be followed by a conversation between the filmmaker herself and Singaporean poet\, Crispin Rodrigues\, who will be reading a poem in tandem with the screening. Besides looking at what is lost and gained when renewal takes place\, the discussion will also examine other pertinent questions drawn out by the film – like what\, for instance\, irrevocably leaves its mark\, and how moving images and poetry alike can capture both situational gravitas and the emotions that bubble beneath during processes of renewal. \nLearn about the film here.

SUMMARY:NUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between
DESCRIPTION:NUS Arts Festival returns to campus with our latest edition: Spaces Between! \nRunning across 3 weekends in March\, you’ll be spoilt for choice with over 20 different shows spanning multiple genres and disciplines like dance\, music\, theatre\, film\, art installations\, dialogue\, and more! \nThe theme Spaces Between examines the idea of liminal spaces\, the uncomfortable unknown as we transition between phases\, and states. While liminal spaces bring discomfort and ambiguity\, they also present us with opportunities for growth and positive change\, physically\, emotionally\, and metaphorically. \nIn a world of diverse and divided views\, NUS Arts Festival 2023: Spaces Between seeks to show how art can build connections and demonstrate that there is more to gain in the spaces between.
