SUMMARY:DnA Fest
DESCRIPTION:DnA Fest\, unfolding in Singapore from 16-19 and 23-26 July 2025\, offers a fresh and dynamic interpretation of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Conceived by Ong Keng Sen\, this multifaceted event blends opera with contemporary expressions through three distinct components. The House of Janus presents a deeply personal documentary film\, while Dido & Aeneas The Belindas reimagines the opera with the energy of drag artistry and ballroom vogue\, featuring performers from Singapore and Japan. The experience culminates on select nights with The Afterparty\, promising a vibrant fusion of music and performance. \nThrough film\, live show\, and nightlife\, DnA Fest explores the core themes of love\, abandonment\, and transformation found in the opera\, offering a powerful contemporary lens. The festival not only showcases innovative artistic collaborations but also marks the launch of The AGEncy Fund on 10 July. This initiative will support the creative endeavors of artists aged 60 and above\, adding another layer of significance to this unique and boundary-pushing event.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Gibbon
DESCRIPTION:★★★★\n“Seriously interesting and wryly amusing”\n– The Guardian \n  \n“The combination of mesmerising manipulation and dry comedy left me wanting more”\n– Circus Diaries \n  \n“…an absorbing and entertaining work achieved through a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry”\n– Resolution \n  \nDevastatingly slick and wonderfully thought-provoking\, Gibbon fuses dance\, physical theatre and juggling to explore the absurd and comedic connections between human behaviours. \n  \nCo-produced by Olivier Award-winning Gandini Juggling and breakout stars Chris Patfield and José Triguero\, Gibbon is a surreal and charming feast of juggling choreography with a sense of humour and a hint of absurdity. The production captivates with a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry.  Achieving success while masking failure\, the narrative is formed when the action cuts between the creation and the execution of hypnotic patterns and juggling movement sequences. \n  \nGibbon takes inspiration from the world of dance\, innovating choreographically and conceptually\, mixing different art forms with juggling and exploring ideas through movement and devised theatre to create a surreal and touching atmosphere. Patfield and Triguero capture the tension of gravity defiance\, combining the inevitable speed of an object falling with the slow movement of intertwined arms and hands. \n  \nPoetic and comedic\, Gibbon is a unique spectacle that invites you to marvel equally at the depth of thought and the proficiency of its performers.

SUMMARY:Starlight: A Symphony of Home
DESCRIPTION:Across three nights\, Starlight brings together some of Singapore’s most beloved voices and brightest new talents—meeting on stage\, exchanging stories\, and finding harmony in the spaces between generations. \nCurated and produced by NAC Young Artist Award recipient Ruth Ling—who also helmed Sing Love—Starlight invites you into an evening of songs shaped by memory\, place\, and possibility. Through original music and familiar favourites\, these artists trace the quiet\, everyday moments that make a home: the people we gather with\, the stories we carry\, the future we’re still writing together. \nGuided by the visual imagination of Brian Gothong Tan\, Starlight is less a performance than a meeting point—a space to listen\, to remember\, and to celebrate the voices that will carry us forward.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Bill's 44th
DESCRIPTION:“…buoyant\, mesmerizing\, joy-inducing…”\n– New York Times \n“This isn’t the birthday that Bill had hoped to have. But for the audience\, his 44th is a gift.”\n– New York Times \n★★★★★\n“A celebration of life\, memory and the passage of time\, brilliantly executed and truly unforgettable.”\n– One4Review \n“Manjuck and James have created a show that evolves from this gentle comedy\, with its absurdist elements\, to this touchingly heartfelt reflective piece about [loneliness] and truly finding yourself and loving that person you discover.”\n– The New Current \nThe streamers are hung\, the punch has been spiked\, and the cake is just begging to be eaten! Now\, all Bill has to do is wait for his guests to arrive. \nCreated and puppeteered by Dorothy James and Andy Manjuck\, Bill’s 44th is a non-verbal\, comedic puppet show for adults performed with an original score\, centered on one very worried leading man\, Bill. Many styles of puppetry\, raucous balloons\, and a cheeky piece of crudité all collide to examine the pitfalls of impatience\, the wonder of loneliness\, and the universal passage of time. \nWant to learn from the experts themselves? Check out Andy and Dorothy’s Puppetry Performance Workshop\, perfect for theatre practitioners and students to enhance their skills.

SUMMARY:PRISM 48
DESCRIPTION:More Than Ever\, we seek dialogue. \nIn 2025\, Singapore marks its 60th year of independence. How has our cultural identity evolved\, and what can we learn from the evolutions of other cultural narratives and strategies? This conversation series reflects on these questions through the lens of SIFA. \nHow do we take the measure of the yawning gulf and uncanny symmetries between a self-perceived cultural desert and a key global node? What is the relationship between festival-making and nation-building? What are the hallmarks and impact of Singapore storytelling? Decades into our post-colonial existence\, how has our relationship with Asia’s traditions changed? How do we master the art of plugging into global circuits\, and what does participation in such circuits mean for art-making in Singapore? What new forms have we invented to make space for difficult conversations? What are the imperatives and challenges of incubating new creative voices in the post-pandemic landscape? \nIn 1977\, the first Singapore Arts Festival kicked off with performances from 77 groups over seven days. In the festival’s 48th year\, these six conversations take stock of how far we have travelled\, and the journey ahead.

SUMMARY:COLONY – A True Colors Project
DESCRIPTION:Diverse dancers from Southeast Asia and Japan create the imagined world of a colony through dance and movement. Each expressing their personal challenges and aspirations beyond their limitations and comfort zones. \nThey live in enforced proximity in an urban tenement\, yet exist as disparate entities distanced by prejudice\, ignorance and fear. \nThey struggle to make connections despite their differences\, while negotiating long-held preconceptions of what it means to be perfect\, complete\, normal\, valuable\, human. \nIn the natural world\, the survival of any colony of organisms depends on its ability to function as a single cohesive collective. Differences\, diversity\, perceived strengths and weaknesses are embraced as necessities – sine qua non – “without which\, not.”\nAnd so too it is with our colony. \nCOLONY – A True Colors Project is the result of an intense collaborative experiment. A blank canvas on which the artistic director\, choreographer\, composer\, film director\, dancers and designers organically paint a narrative in dance\, music and film.\nUnscripted films are seamlessly woven in. They give the audience a peek behind the curtain\, revealing the most sacred element of any artist’s creative journey – the rehearsal space.

SUMMARY:Vampyr
DESCRIPTION:Vampyr is a mockumentary about stubborn shapeshifting creatures—half-dead\, half- alive\, half-animal\, half-human\, half-earth—that refuse to obey the mandate of the nature/culture divide. Living in unregulated wind turbine parks in Chile\, these indeterminate beings exist sometimes as disoriented bats\, and sometimes as exhausted night-shift workers. \nA piece about energy and exhaustion\, work and rest\, Vampyr is a work of delirious black humour about the relationship between the non-humans (read: animals) that inhabit our territories and how we relate to their cultures when we consider humankind’s energetic projections for the future. \nA critical and ironic dialogue is established between the myth of the European vampire and the reality of the Chilean hematophagous bat\, a species that dies in large numbers due to wind turbines. This creation of an imagined mythology of a South American vampire presents a critical perspective on green neo-colonialism\, which perpetuates practices of extraction and appropriation of colonial logic that are greenwashed under the guise of green energy production. \nVampyr is the third part of Chilean playwright and theatre director Manuela Infante’s exploration of the non-human that started with Estado Vegetal and How to Turn to Stone.

SUMMARY:The House Between The Winds
DESCRIPTION:Experience a talking installation paying homage to the glorious plantations that lined Orchard Road. Witness a magnificent sailboat travelling across the Empress Lawn. Touch\, feel and create as you go on a pilgrimage of memories through whimsical and playful interactive kinetic installations that take you on a journey through time and space.  \nMany were once drawn to a place where the winds crossed\, where the paths connecting East and West met. There\, they traded\, made a living\, and learned—acquiring knowledge that stretched beyond the borders of their homelands. It was also a safe harbour\, as they waited for the monsoon winds to change and carry them onwards to their destinations.  \nSoon\, this place became home\, and they reshaped the land to suit their lives. The nurturing trees fed their new ideas and ways of doing things\, and with their insatiable and unceasing appetites\, the trees made way for a landscape that would be forever changed.

SUMMARY:LEAR
DESCRIPTION:Man. Father. Fool. \nIn this dark and claustrophobic world\, Lear is the all-powerful patriarch\, but he is also his own fool. Being a fool is one thing. Having power and being a fool is quite another. What happens when the power we hold is taken away? \n“Blow\, winds\, and crack your cheeks! Rage\, blow!” \nThis contemporary re-imagining of Shakespeare’s King Lear will bring together a cast of four with Ramesh Meyyappan’s trademark bold visual storytelling\, exploring universal themes of escalating madness\, loss of power\, betrayal and trust with empathy and a deep understanding of the human condition.

SUMMARY:A Thousand Stitches
DESCRIPTION:A vandalised artwork. An enigmatic painter forced to create wartime propaganda. A desperate act of love.  \nAs Emma\, an art conservation student restores a portrait of a Japanese woman\, Mizuki\, she finds herself transported deep into the heart of Syonan-to—Japanese-occupied Singapore. There\, Emma stitches together the lives of Mizuki\, the artist\, Huang Wei and the storms that raged in and around them. \nA Thousand Stitches is a moving story of friendship\, heartbreak and loss told through a blend of performance\, painting and live cinema. A haunting reimagining of a difficult chapter of Singapore’s history\, this presentation explores the transgenerational impact of war and the necessity of hope in the darkest of times.

SUMMARY:HOME
DESCRIPTION:On stage\, a house appears from nothing. It goes up fast\, choreographed like time-lapse photography. Residents move in\, move out\, get evicted\, burn it down\, loot it\, rent it\, remodel it\, get married and divorced in it\, grow up in it\, die in it\, haunt it. And all the while\, they leave and live among traces of residents from the present\, past and future. They throw a party\, as if everyone who ever lived there cohabitated\, transcending time and space. \nHOME is a large-scale performance work that explores and explodes the relationship between “house” and “home”. A visual and physical spectacle\, HOME combines dance\, illusion\, live music\, homespun engineering\, and inventive audience interaction to compose a work that asks\, “Where is home? If it is not a place\, what is home?” \nHOME aims to awaken us to current housing dilemmas\, local and global. The universal and timely themes of gentrification and migration are rendered in the choreography of ordinary people inhabiting a structure\, leaving that structure through a variety of social\, political\, personal\, and aesthetic forces\, and replacing one another. HOME seeks to use the house of the theatre as a lens through which we might see the impact of these forces at work—the illusion of home; the transitory nature of dwelling; the constraints of time and money; the impossible structural demands of a house; the absurdity; and at times the impossibility of trying to make a house a home. In the face of entropy\, we struggle to build infrastructure\, family community\, art. We fail\, and we try again.

SUMMARY:Told By My Mother
DESCRIPTION:In the second chapter of his trilogy on love\, Lebanese choreographer Ali Chahrour draws from his own family history and in torn-up Lebanon to weave a tapestry of poignant stories. \nAt the heart of it\, a mother\, Leila\, clings to her child Abbas\, striving to shield him from the fate of martyrdom. A little further down\, another mother\, Fatmeh\, who never stopped looking for her missing child\, Hassan. These tales\, echoing through time\, form an infinite loop of love and loss. \nWith their stories\, these ordinary heroines breathe life into the tenderness and fierce intensity of maternal love. On stage\, they give birth to heart-rending family portraits\, so striking in the infinite beauty of filial relations. \nAli Chahrour\, actress Hala Omran\, and musicians Ali Hout and Abed Kobeissy (Two or The Dragon) accompany these narratives with music inspired as much by Arab culture as by urban sounds. Through movement\, song\, words and music\, generations converge and fracture\, like the narrow and unfathomable eternal love between a mother and a child. Absolute.

SUMMARY:SIFA Pavilion at Bedok Town Square
DESCRIPTION:Imagined as a transient arts space charged with multidisciplinary artistic expression and public engagement\, the SIFA Pavilion lends a powerful new dimension to the Festival’s relationship with the shared public environ; the common space where our plural narratives co-exist. \nA colossal installation\, titled Beneath Tide\, Running Water\, by visual artist Wang Ruobing doubles as a performance stage\, becoming the visual icon of the Festival’s first Pavilion\, an environment built to engender collaboration and gathering through the conduit of performance. \nThe SIFA Pavilion lasts for the course of the Festival hosting multiple works bringing performance and the public together. Situated at Bedok Town Square\, and taking in the social and historical contexts of Bedok\, with its rich history influenced by the sea\, old charm and a diverse urban community today\, the SIFA Pavilion becomes its own ecosystem cycling through the multi-arts experience and sprouting so much creative possibility.

SUMMARY:Umbilical
DESCRIPTION:Umbilical explores the social and emotional ripples resulting from division and transformation\, drawing poignant parallels with the looming uncertainty that was experienced by the people who lived through the separation of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965.  \nA dynamic blend of movement\, music\, visual projections and AI integration\, Umbilical is an immersive performance that delves into the intricate layers of identity\, belonging and relationships. Here\, the umbilical cord serves as an evocative metaphor and symbolic bridge between water and land\, people and places\, and past and present.  \nUmbilical invites us to reflect on the evolving nature of personal and collective bonds in an ever-shifting world\, while embracing technology as both a collaborator and a form of resistance. The multi-sensorial performance magnifies the tension between human and machine\, tradition and innovation.
