DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows.\nSingapore Sign Language Interpretation for 8pm show on 17 January 2025. \n  \nIt’s a thrill but with a lot to say about mental health and personal reflection and why people with the biggest grins might hide the biggest sadness. \n— Keith Gow\, Theatre First \nScreaming\, overwhelmed and frustrated: I just want to tear out my skin and smash my head against a wall!!! \nIn a society where we are constantly pushed to be more productive\, skilful and self-sufficient\, what does it mean to ‘just be?’. Can we grow from a place of love and trust instead of shame and comparison? \nMeet Sheryl with an ‘S’. Sheryl lives in Singapore\, which also begins with an ‘S’. Life hasn’t been the smoothest for Sheryl\, like for us all. No problemo. \nFollow Sheryl on her quest to become as resilient and as versatile as Seaweed. Enter a world of moody projections\, quirky presentations\, satirical ads\, and a lot of the ‘weed’ from the sea. \nA Judges’ Picks and Nominated for Best in Theatre at Melbourne Fringe 2023\, I Am Seaweed is a multimedia theatrical show that creates space for respite in an overwhelming world. \nPlease note that some audience members will be seated on cushions on the floor for the duration of the performance. We advise that you dress comfortably for the show. \nI Am Seaweed resonates with anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed or persistently pressured to keep striving for more\, for better. It’s an entertaining and good-humoured show that asks us to look inside ourselves and question why we do everything we do and if it’s actually making us happy. \n— Myron My\, MyMelbourneArts \nA joyous work featuring a stunning\, off-the-charts-charming performance from Cheryl Ho. Bold\, energised\, achingly-human and super sharp \n—Judge’s Pick\, Melbourne Fringe Theatre \nWith support from Theatre Works (Australia) \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 17 January 2025. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com by 6 December 2024.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Eclipse by The Necessary Stage
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \nAbsorbingly told by [2008 staging’s actor] Umar Ahmed\, Eclipse suggests that ancestral memory is never as meaningful as the allegiances of everyday life. \n— The Guardian UK \n  \n  \n  \n(Playwright Haresh Sharma) has demonstrated a deftness and maturity in scriptwriting\, a deeper inquiry into life and humanity\, as well as an evident progress in terms of his creations. \n— 联合早报 Lianhe Zaobao [translated from Chinese] \nA young Singaporean man is making a journey to his father’s birthplace in Hyderabad\, Pakistan. With him are his father’s ashes. As he makes the arduous trip\, he retraces the original journey made by millions of people—including his parents and grandparents—in 1947\, during the partition of India and Pakistan. \nWritten by Cultural Medallion recipient Haresh Sharma\, Eclipse is a play that looks at three generations of men struggling with their dreams and their journeys\, offering an intimate look at personal stories affected by historical events. \nFirst presented as a short play to critical acclaim by Scotland’s 7:84 Theatre at Traverse Theatre\, Eclipse was developed into a full-length production for the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2008. \nAlmost 80 years after the Partition\, this staging with a fresh new direction by Associate Artist A Yagnya stars award-winning Singapore actor Shrey Bhargava. It also features Indian classical vocalist Sveta Kilpady. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after the performances on 16 and 17 January 2025\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 17 January 2025. SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: WePushTheSky by Qabila
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows. \n… part history lesson\, part culinary exploration\, and part feminist fable\n \n— Karthik Ranganathan\, Citizen Matters \nThe play is a triumph of storytelling and is exceptionally brave.. \n—Venkat Srinivasan\, Sabrang India \nWePushTheSky is an interactive solo performance that weaves together food\, song\, story\, myth\, and history. Where personal stories meet community histories\, survival stories of the Karbala entwine with songs of the Ramayana\, and anecdotes from the past confront desires about the future. A play that reflects on an urgent social reality of our present times—friendships that have been lost\, gained\, or have endured amidst increasing shrill political rhetoric across the world. \nWritten and performed by Nisha Abdulla and directed by Ujwala Rao\, WePushTheSky centres friendship and feminist solidarities as an antidote to the politics of hate. The play invites the audience to listen deeply to another’s reality and elevates listening to the act of an assertive ally. WePushTheSky has toured widely to warm receptions in India\, performed at the Feminist Theatre Festival in Jenin\, Occupied Palestine\, and has been invited to perform at the 15th Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) International Forum in Bangkok\, Thailand. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 16 January 2025. SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Dancing with the Ghost of My Child by Noor Effendy Ibrahim\, Ruby Jayaseelan & NAFA
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \na unique approach\, rather bold and different \n—Natya Vichara on Purushi by Ruby Jayaseelan \nI know [Effendy’s work] will express a kind of pain and anger acceptable in the performance space\, a pain and anger that is often delegitimised or minimised or considered “inappropriate” elsewhere—and I cherish his work for that reason. \n—Corrie Tan\, Jom Media on ANAK by Very Shy Gurl by fendy \nI myself am an absolute abyss. \n—Antonin Artaud \nIn the beginning\, God created despair\, for men to find hope within. Someone heard someone else say this somewhere before\, sometime back. But no one knows who\, when and where. It must have been God herself who had said this through some men. Only God could be that smart to tease men into such futility. And here\, men find themselves being baited into their own despair. \nConceptualised and directed by Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Ruby Jayaseelan\, Dancing with the Ghost of My Child is an experimental physical theatre performance written by Elvira Foo Jing  Yun\, Gregory Kong Ka-Ee\, Lex (Lee Zhi Qi)\, and Liu Qintong (Amelia) exploring vulnerability\, trauma and the desire to heal. It is devised by students from the BA (Honours) in Performance Making programme at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \nCo-presented with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (a founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore). \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 10 January 2025. In hot\, bushfire-prone Australia\, the winters are increasingly warmer and shorter with each passing year. \nWinner of Best Actor at the Sydney Theatre Critics Award and Sustainability Award at the Adelaide Fringe 2024\, The End of Winter is about loss and resilience. SUMMARY:comma 2025: PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:comma\, indicating an unfinished sentence\, reflects the fluidity of the arts and never-ending pursuit for excellence among Singapore’s young creatives. \n \nFrom 31 December 2024 to 26 January 2025\, comma is a Creative Arts festival that celebrates emerging artists while bringing the spotlight to Singapore’s budding creative scene at the Somerset Belt.  \nThe equation “PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE” invites contemplation on how the echoes of the past resonate in the present\, shaping the trajectory of what is yet to come.    \nThis theme invites artists to delve into this interconnectedness by unearthing forgotten narratives\, evolving perspectives and envisioning the influence of the past and present on our future. Drawing inspiration from tradition\, heritage and ritualism\, artists are encouraged to experiment with new techniques and unconventional themes and materials\, creating works that not only mirror our current reality but also provide glimpses into the trajectory of where we are headed.    \nAudiences will experience works that pay homage to our roots while offering fresh and contemporary interpretations\, weaving together the threads of past\, present\, and future.

SUMMARY:GIGENIS - the generation of the Earth
DESCRIPTION:“I am excited and humbled to be back on stage and direct six extraordinary soloist artists from all generations. GIGENIS is a profound tribute to that reflection\, a reconciliation between the past and the present times\, a genuine celebration of our collective love for dance—boundless\, timeless\, as well as deeply rooted.”\n– Akram Khan \nAkram Khan\, a choreographer and dancer rooted in the tradition of his practice\, and a creative interpreter of stories that need to be experienced\, has revolutionised the world of dance. \nKhan returns to his roots\, traditions and past—to a time when we were more connected with nature\, Mother Earth and our mythology. GIGENIS evokes the memories of our civilisation. \nIn his latest work\, GIGENIS – the generation of the Earth\, Khan shares the stage with a distinguished ensemble of classical Indian dance artists\, including Kutiyattam artist Kapila Venu\, Odissi soloist\, Sirikalyani Adkoli\, Bharatanatyam soloists Mavin Khoo and Mythili Prakash\, and the Bharatanatyam duo Vijna Vasudevan and Renjith Babu. \nKhan invokes memories across time and place to celebrate these artists’ collective love of dance. Drawing from his deep-seated connection to ritual practices and his ability to weave narratives through movement\, GIGENIS – the generation of the Earth is a testament to the enduring resonance of tradition in a rapidly changing world.

SUMMARY:Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival is an annual showcase of films in Davao City\, Philippines\, that explores the myriad meanings of the word “ngilngig”—a common Bisaya expression for something that is fantastic or something that elicits horror or alluding to the macabre. \nFrom what used to be a horror-genre festival\, Ngilngig has expanded its scope to position itself as a premiere fantastic film festival in Southeast Asia\, extending the reach to other neighboring countries’ “ngilngig” and fantastic films that are significant with our own ways of telling stories. \nAfter a one-year hiatus\, Ngilngig comes back with more adventurous and exciting voices with films from all over Asia. Opening this year’s edition is Kantil\, the debut feature film by Joshua Cesar Medroso\, returning to its hometown after its Cinemalaya premiere. Nelson Yeo’s Locarno-winning debut feature Dreaming & Dying will close the festival. In between are a showcase of 34 Philippine short films and 23 Asian short films in competition. Included in its feature-film lineup are films from acclaimed Filipino auteurs Khavn and Gutierrez Mangansakan II. \nFeisal Azizuddin’s This Land of Mine will also have its World Premiere at the festival ahead of its Malaysian release. SUMMARY:Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine)
DESCRIPTION:Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine) is an immersive and interactive experience combining poetry\, sound\, and light. Part of “Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Interplay” and Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary celebrations\, this event celebrates the rich histories and communities of Waterloo Street. \nWaterloo Street represents Singapore’s diverse heritage\, and Cor Machina explores the connections between communities and the arts\, symbolised by the typewriter as a relic with the poet as its beating heart. The typewriter’s mechanical clatter echoes modern life’s relentless grind\, yet within this noise\, there is beauty—a reminder that even in the machine\, the human heart creates with hope. \nCor Machina captures this playfully\, by inviting participants to explore these themes through creation. Audiences first enter an installation of pre-made prompts that draws from personal\, communal memories and stories of the street. They’re invited to send in an order for a poem to the Proletariat Poetry Factory\, which becomes a meta memory machine. Poets\, musicians\, and artists create new memories and stories from their inputs\, blending them with the street’s past. \nThe work evokes collective remembrance and celebrates the street’s heritage in a contemporary context. The intent is to spark meaningful conversations\, weaving together past and present\, individual and collective experience. This performance is also in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, serving to commemorate our placemaking and memory making on Waterloo Street.
