DESCRIPTION:On stage\, a house appears from nothing. It goes up fast\, choreographed like time-lapse photography. Residents move in\, move out\, get evicted\, burn it down\, loot it\, rent it\, remodel it\, get married and divorced in it\, grow up in it\, die in it\, haunt it. And all the while\, they leave and live among traces of residents from the present\, past and future. They throw a party\, as if everyone who ever lived there cohabitated\, transcending time and space. \nHOME is a large-scale performance work that explores and explodes the relationship between “house” and “home”. A visual and physical spectacle\, HOME combines dance\, illusion\, live music\, homespun engineering\, and inventive audience interaction to compose a work that asks\, “Where is home? If it is not a place\, what is home?” \nHOME aims to awaken us to current housing dilemmas\, local and global. The universal and timely themes of gentrification and migration are rendered in the choreography of ordinary people inhabiting a structure\, leaving that structure through a variety of social\, political\, personal\, and aesthetic forces\, and replacing one another. HOME seeks to use the house of the theatre as a lens through which we might see the impact of these forces at work—the illusion of home; the transitory nature of dwelling; the constraints of time and money; the impossible structural demands of a house; the absurdity; and at times the impossibility of trying to make a house a home. In the face of entropy\, we struggle to build infrastructure\, family community\, art. We fail\, and we try again.

A little further down\, another mother\, Fatmeh\, who never stopped looking for her missing child\, Hassan. These tales\, echoing through time\, form an infinite loop of love and loss. \nWith their stories\, these ordinary heroines breathe life into the tenderness and fierce intensity of maternal love. On stage\, they give birth to heart-rending family portraits\, so striking in the infinite beauty of filial relations. \nAli Chahrour\, actress Hala Omran\, and musicians Ali Hout and Abed Kobeissy (Two or The Dragon) accompany these narratives with music inspired as much by Arab culture as by urban sounds. DESCRIPTION:Singapore’s pinnacle annual performing arts festival\, Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA)\, returns from 16 May to 1 June 2025\, guided by the overarching theme More Than Ever. Set against the backdrop of Singapore’s 60th year and building on the Festival’s 48 years of history\, this year’s edition will feature the largest showcase of homegrown talents\, with 15 new local commissions. \nThrough multilayered presentations by a range of distinct artistic voices\, SIFA 2025 pushes the boundaries of performance and festival presentation\, bridging diverse audiences with unique artistic experiences. The Festival places homegrown talents at the fore alongside compelling international works\, spanning art forms that include theatre\, dance\, music\, and visual arts. Featuring an unprecedented number of 15 local commissioned works that include reimaginings of classics such as Animal Farm and LEAR\, alongside presentations by singular artistic voices such as Drama Box and Nine Years Theatre. SIFA also gets more to experience the arts with the introduction of a new SIFA Pavilion at Bedok Town Square that will host a variety of arts experiences throughout the Festival and continues to present Little SIFA for the young and young-at-heart\, which sets up camp this time at Empress Lawn. SUMMARY:SIFA Pavilion at Bedok Town Square
DESCRIPTION:Imagined as a transient arts space charged with multidisciplinary artistic expression and public engagement\, the SIFA Pavilion lends a powerful new dimension to the Festival’s relationship with the shared public environ; the common space where our plural narratives co-exist. \nA colossal installation\, titled Beneath Tide\, Running Water\, by visual artist Wang Ruobing doubles as a performance stage\, becoming the visual icon of the Festival’s first Pavilion\, an environment built to engender collaboration and gathering through the conduit of performance. \nThe SIFA Pavilion lasts for the course of the Festival hosting multiple works bringing performance and the public together. DESCRIPTION:After a more than two-decade long domestic run\, celebrated Taiwanese arts icon Wu Nien-jen brings his acclaimed Human Condition theatre series to Huayi for its Singapore premiere. The well-loved series has been enjoyed by over half a million Taiwanese theatregoers so far\, and Human Condition VIII is the latest eagerly anticipated instalment. \nHuman Condition VIII tells the story of Mingcan\, a retiree who finds himself adrift and without a purpose in life. His status as a respected patriarch has long disappeared as his adult children have their own families and lives to deal with. Unable to contribute to the economy and unneeded by his family\, Mingcan questions his self-worth as his dignity slowly fades with each listless\, monotonous day. Just as he feels that he has struck rock-bottom\, he instead strikes the lottery jackpot\, and immediately finds himself to be of interest to his family once more. Mingcan feels respected\, needed\, wanted. But is this unexpected windfall a stroke of luck or a harbinger of misfortune? \nStarting in 2000\, the Human Condition series shines an empathetic spotlight on the day-to-day stories of everyday Taiwanese people who strive to make the best out of what they have in their lives. Presented by Greenray Theatre Company\, the series has continued to garner enthusiastic support and enjoy great appeal since its inception. Co-produced with Siong Leng Musical Association\, The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun presents a musical experience of discovery\, courage and determination. \nThree women leave China and set sail for Southeast Asia in the early 20th century\, their voyage echoing the journey of Wang Zhaojun\, one of the legendary Four Beauties of ancient China. Finding themselves on a cargo ship\, they are inescapably embroiled in sinister struggles for power as a mysterious man reveals secrets they have yet to understand. What will their destinies hold? What connection exists between these three women braving a tumultuous sea and Wang Zhaojun\, who rode beyond the borders of Western Han into the Xiongnu empire? Do the fragments of loss and sorrow in Nanyin music symbolise the life stories of these modern women\, or do they inspire courage to explore new horizons? \n  \nThis fusion of traditional Nanyin music and contemporary theatre will delight both Nanyin purists and new audiences. Siong Leng breaks new ground in this collaboration with celebrated Taiwanese playwright Katherine Hui-ling Chou and Taiwanese director Lee Yi Hsiu\, who is known for his innovative direction of traditional music performances. \nThe Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun features authentic traditional Nanyin music harking back half a millennium that narrates the legend of Wang Zhaojun\, with additional music composed by Siong Leng’s music director Ng Kang Kee. The production showcases the principal artists of Siong Leng\, and a skilled ensemble of Eastern and Western classical musicians performing together with Singapore actors Ang Xiao Ting\, Jodi Chan and Hang Qian Chou.

DESCRIPTION:Rickshaw Boy narrates the life of Xiangzi\, a rickshaw puller in Beiping during the Republic of China era. A strong and ambitious young man from the countryside\, Xiangzi dreams of building an ideal life through his own efforts. However\, fate repeatedly thwarts his aspirations\, and despite his hard work and determination\, his circumstances remain unchanged. In the context of modern society\, Xiangzi’s helplessness and confusion reflect the struggles of modern workers caught in similar cycles of hardship. \nLao She is widely celebrated as a “Master of Language”\, with his works both entertaining and deeply rooted in the local culture of Beijing. Rickshaw Boy is among Lao She’s most renowned masterpieces. It presents a tragic story laced with humour\, using Beijing dialect and expressions to vividly portray the resilience\, pride\, and underlying pain of his characters. Director Fang Xu\, often regarded as a “Lao She specialist\,” has adapted Lao She’s works for the stage numerous times with his distinctive expressive and interpretative style. In this production\, Fang Xu reimagines the original text through a contemporary lens\, incorporating modern aesthetics into the stage design\, lighting\, music\, and visual composition. \nWhile the tragic struggles of the rickshaw pullers portrayed in Rickshaw Boy may seem distant to contemporary audiences\, the story also offers a compelling psychological portrait of Xiangzi himself. It delves into the conflict between his ideals and the harsh realities\, alongside the confusion\, frustration\, and helplessness that permeate his inner world – emotions that remain profoundly relatable even today. \nAnother standout feature of this adaptation is its all-male cast\, which boldly challenges traditional gender roles while employing a non-linear\, visually-driven narrative structure to depict Xiangzi’s tragic journey. This innovative approach departs from a straightforward retelling\, offering a rich and layered interpretation. \nOne of the female characters\, Tigress\, is portrayed by Zhao Zhen\, a nationally acclaimed Chinese actor with extensive theatre experience\, who brings the role of to life with a commanding portrayal of her domineering and sharp-tongued personality. Another female character\, Xiao Fu Zi\, is portrayed by Ren Yubin\, who is trained in traditional opera Dan roles. He delivers a poignant performance\, capturing the character’s sorrow and timidity with nuance. Siqin Gaowa\, an actress renowned for her iconic portrayal of Tigress in the film adaptation of Rickshaw Boy (1982)\, serves as the artistic advisor for this production. \nThis marks the firs-ever staging of Rickshaw Boy in Singapore and Fang Xu’s debut at the Esplanade. The critically acclaimed all-male cast\, which has captivated audiences in China\, will perform in this groundbreaking production\, making it a must-see event!

He does his best just to stick to his brief and ignore the content of the files—but this proves difficult when faced with all these pages giving an account of the most critical and catastrophic moments in South Africa’s history.
