SUMMARY:comma 2025: PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:comma\, indicating an unfinished sentence\, reflects the fluidity of the arts and never-ending pursuit for excellence among Singapore’s young creatives. \n \nFrom 31 December 2024 to 26 January 2025\, comma is a Creative Arts festival that celebrates emerging artists while bringing the spotlight to Singapore’s budding creative scene at the Somerset Belt.  \nThe equation “PAST x PRESENT = FUTURE” invites contemplation on how the echoes of the past resonate in the present\, shaping the trajectory of what is yet to come.    \nThis theme invites artists to delve into this interconnectedness by unearthing forgotten narratives\, evolving perspectives and envisioning the influence of the past and present on our future. Drawing inspiration from tradition\, heritage and ritualism\, artists are encouraged to experiment with new techniques and unconventional themes and materials\, creating works that not only mirror our current reality but also provide glimpses into the trajectory of where we are headed.    \nAudiences will experience works that pay homage to our roots while offering fresh and contemporary interpretations\, weaving together the threads of past\, present\, and future.

DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \na unique approach\, rather bold and different \n—Natya Vichara on Purushi by Ruby Jayaseelan \nI know [Effendy’s work] will express a kind of pain and anger acceptable in the performance space\, a pain and anger that is often delegitimised or minimised or considered “inappropriate” elsewhere—and I cherish his work for that reason. \n—Corrie Tan\, Jom Media on ANAK by Very Shy Gurl by fendy \nI myself am an absolute abyss. \n—Antonin Artaud \nIn the beginning\, God created despair\, for men to find hope within. Someone heard someone else say this somewhere before\, sometime back. But no one knows who\, when and where. It must have been God herself who had said this through some men. Only God could be that smart to tease men into such futility. And here\, men find themselves being baited into their own despair. \nConceptualised and directed by Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Ruby Jayaseelan\, Dancing with the Ghost of My Child is an experimental physical theatre performance written by Elvira Foo Jing  Yun\, Gregory Kong Ka-Ee\, Lex (Lee Zhi Qi)\, and Liu Qintong (Amelia) exploring vulnerability\, trauma and the desire to heal. It is devised by students from the BA (Honours) in Performance Making programme at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \nCo-presented with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (a founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore). \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 10 January 2025. DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows. \n… part history lesson\, part culinary exploration\, and part feminist fable\n \n— Karthik Ranganathan\, Citizen Matters \nThe play is a triumph of storytelling and is exceptionally brave.. \n—Venkat Srinivasan\, Sabrang India \nWePushTheSky is an interactive solo performance that weaves together food\, song\, story\, myth\, and history. Where personal stories meet community histories\, survival stories of the Karbala entwine with songs of the Ramayana\, and anecdotes from the past confront desires about the future. A play that reflects on an urgent social reality of our present times—friendships that have been lost\, gained\, or have endured amidst increasing shrill political rhetoric across the world. \nWritten and performed by Nisha Abdulla and directed by Ujwala Rao\, WePushTheSky centres friendship and feminist solidarities as an antidote to the politics of hate. The play invites the audience to listen deeply to another’s reality and elevates listening to the act of an assertive ally. WePushTheSky has toured widely to warm receptions in India\, performed at the Feminist Theatre Festival in Jenin\, Occupied Palestine\, and has been invited to perform at the 15th Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) International Forum in Bangkok\, Thailand. \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 16 January 2025.
