With a focus on challenging taboos entrenched in contemporary culture\, he employs various mediums to amplify voices often silenced or marginalized. \nAryan’s canvas extends beyond conventional boundaries\, with bodies serving as both medium and message. SUMMARY:Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine)
DESCRIPTION:Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine) is an immersive and interactive experience combining poetry\, sound\, and light. Part of “Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Interplay” and Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary celebrations\, this event celebrates the rich histories and communities of Waterloo Street. \nWaterloo Street represents Singapore’s diverse heritage\, and Cor Machina explores the connections between communities and the arts\, symbolised by the typewriter as a relic with the poet as its beating heart. The typewriter’s mechanical clatter echoes modern life’s relentless grind\, yet within this noise\, there is beauty—a reminder that even in the machine\, the human heart creates with hope. \nCor Machina captures this playfully\, by inviting participants to explore these themes through creation. Audiences first enter an installation of pre-made prompts that draws from personal\, communal memories and stories of the street. They’re invited to send in an order for a poem to the Proletariat Poetry Factory\, which becomes a meta memory machine. Poets\, musicians\, and artists create new memories and stories from their inputs\, blending them with the street’s past. \nThe work evokes collective remembrance and celebrates the street’s heritage in a contemporary context. The intent is to spark meaningful conversations\, weaving together past and present\, individual and collective experience. This performance is also in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, serving to commemorate our placemaking and memory making on Waterloo Street.

SUMMARY:River of Life: An Intercultural Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:12th September 2024\, 8 pm\nEsplanade Recital Studio \nDive into a visual and musical odyssey as the magic of five rivers unfolds\, revealing the evolution of life through mesmerising original compositions by prolific composers Avik Chari\, Chok Kerong\, Dr. John Sharpley\, Eric Watson\, and Gu Wei. These five original compositions will be performed by the NP Collective\, an ensemble managed by Brahmastra Arts House. The concert will also feature Sarfaraaz Khan\, one of the leading exponents of the Sarangi\, as a soloist. \nThis concert bridges Indian classical and folk musicians with Western classical music composers\, creating a harmonious blend of both worlds. The fusion of diverse musical traditions highlights the universality of music\, bringing together the unique sounds and rhythms of Indian and Western classical traditions in a unified\, transcendent performance. \nThe concert is supported by the START and Sands Innovation Fund – National Arts Council (Singapore) with venue partnership by Esplanade Co. \nThe concert is directed by Gildon Choo and artistically directed by multi-award-winning composer and accomplished flautist\, Niranjan Pandian. Launched in 2022 as part of “Our Conversations: Our Festive Stories” by Our Tampines Hub\, the NP Collective later presented its original concert\, “Samavaya: A Euphonic Co-Existence\,” at the Indian Performing Arts Convention 2023 held at the Esplanade Annex Studio.

SUMMARY:Subconscious
DESCRIPTION:Subconscious is Betty Goh’s long term project about the introspective reflections of her soul and subconscious. \nGrowing up in the heart of Singapore\, the adrenaline rush and vibrancy of this busy city excites her. At the same time\, she feels an amount of unspoken loneliness\, tension and dilemma hidden beneath the surface. These overlapping and complex emotions are often expressed through Betty’s subconscious during her daily street walks and hence\, the result of her visual poetry. \nThrough her unique use of reflections\, shadows\, silhouettes\, long exposure\, lines\, shapes and spaces\, Betty captures the subtle psychological aspects of a busy urban street life. While her work exudes a sense of mystery\, imagination and surrealism\, all her street work is un-posed and un-staged\, captured within a single exposure\, and with zero or minimal edits. Majority of the photos in this exhibition were shot on the streets of Singapore and some were captured in Tokyo. As a keen Leica camera user\, Betty has been using the Leica Q2 and Leica Q3 cameras to capture her work. \nCome visit this exhibition to celebrate Betty’s passion for abstract street photography. \nThis exhibition is supported by Objectifs Centre for Photography & Film and Leica Singapore.

It intends to combine: \n\nthe magic of hearing an artist or bookmaker share about their process\, and\nthe luxury of time and comfort when reading in a library.\n\nAn art book is a curious object—it’s an artwork you can touch and carry around. It can have pictures and texts\, or many pictures and no text\, or even texts and no pictures. \nArt books afford a private space and mode of encounter that can be revisited freely and repeatedly. While I love the conversations surrounding books and their makers at an art fair\, it’s an awfully extroverted endeavour. [collected on paper] offers a chance to explore different art books and the creators’ thoughts in an intimate setting\, with notes on their processes and materials.” \nMODE \nA selection of books will be presented alongside a book club under a particular idea on each occasion. The showcase is held within an existing art book library\, allowing the books to be encountered in the context of other art books. \nThe first occasion will reflect on the idea of time capsules. On this occasion\, the books selected for discussions related to time capsules contain images that share certain qualities with the capsules themselves: \n\nmost of the images in these books were not originally intended to become part of a book.\nthese images\, like most in books\, gain additional readings over time\, but they also become irreplicable\, as the shift in time directly impacts their context.\n\n[collected on paper] is co-programmed by Hong Shu-ying and Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film. \n\nOccasion #1: Time Capsules  \nA time capsule is a container where things are well-kept and protected from the elements. I’ve always found it fascinating that everyday objects can become archived and emblematic of their era once they are placed in a time capsule. These items aren’t necessarily exclusive or rare but serve as a snapshot of what the capsule’s creator valued at that moment. The very existence of a time capsule implies that care and resources have been dedicated to preserving these objects. \nOn this occasion\, the books selected for discussions related to time capsules contain images that share certain qualities with the capsules themselves: \n\nmost of the images in these books were not originally intended to become part of a book.\nthese images\, like most in books\, gain additional readings over time\, but they also become irreplicable\, as the shift in time directly impacts their context.\n\nBooks Featured 📚📚📚 \n\nAparna Nori – 24 Slides\nGeorge Wong – Wallet\nLai Yu Tong – Things I Bought\, Things I Threw Away\, Things I Ate\, Things I Saw\, Things I Made\, and Other Things (For Future Reference)\nLou / Atelier HOKO – Spider & Man\n\n\nAbout Hong Shu-ying \nHong Shu-ying 方舒颖 is an artist who collects and works with found images and materials. She recontextualises familiar sights and sounds to highlight patterns\, repetitions\, and contradictions related to inheritance and ways of learning. \nHer recent projects delve into informal archives\, which act like personal and communal time capsules that encapsulate the banalities and peculiarities of life. These include handwritten elements found in scores and annotations\, alongside amateur videos and images. This fascination is informed by her experiences growing up in amateur Chinese orchestras and the internet. \nShu holds a BFA (Hons) in Media Art (Photography) from Nanyang Technological University\, School of Art\, Design\, and Media. She was awarded the Kwek Leng Joo Prize of Excellence in Photography and featured in the 6th Women in Film and Photography Showcase by Objectifs (Singapore). Recently\, she had her first solo presentation at Esplanade (Singapore) as part of the Singapore Art Week 2024. She has participated in exhibitions\, showcases\, and festivals internationally\, including in Austria\, Cambodia\, China\, Germany\, Indonesia\, Italy\, Malaysia\, the Netherlands\, South Korea\, Taiwan\, and Thailand.

Since its invention\, karaoke has evolved into a cultural and popular phenomenon\, specifically in Asian countries like Japan\, Hong Kong\, Philippines\, and Vietnam. In these lands\, singing takes various forms and is carried out in locations such as bars\, KTVs\, homes\, cafes\, weddings\, and funerals. The communal act is not only entertaining and fun\, it can also provide a sense of comfort and familiarity. \nExploring the social impact of this beloved activity\, Karaoke! Playing the ♯ and ♭ presents short films where realities\, dreams\, and fears converge with the act of singing. The “Natural Geometry” exhibition showcases her drawings and papercut techniques\, highlighting the natural world’s inherent patterns\, from tree branches to crystal formations. Each piece reflects her intuitive understanding and meticulous attention to detail\, inviting viewers to appreciate nature’s complexity and the joy of creative expression. Wong’s art embodies the harmony and interconnectedness of all living things. \nAbout ART:DIS \nART:DIS exists to serve and create opportunities for persons with disabilities in the arts.
