DESCRIPTION:The Sea and the Neighbourhood is a multidisciplinary work encompassing Bedok’s costal heritage\, neighbourhood charm and the modernity of its inhabitants. Populated by musicians and dancers\, musical instruments and choreography\, The Sea and the Neighbourhood captures notions of momentum and renewal\, like the ebb and flow of the sea that shapes Singapore\, and the pulse of a people knowing where they have come from and the paths they must continue to forge for a meaningful collective future. \nA colossal installation by visual artist Wang Ruobing doubles as a performance stage becoming the visual icon of SIFA’s first Pavilion\, an environment built to engender collaboration and gathering through the conduit of performance. Coming together as the collective strengths of a community of artists working in response to each other\, The Sea and the Neighbourhood features music composition by Philip Tan\, dance choreography by Christina Chan with Singapore Ballet and video\, and spatial design and costume styling by Brian Gothong Tan.

Directed and choreographed by Kuik Swee Boon\, this exploratory work gathers T.H.E’s dance artists with a cross-disciplinary team\, each stepping beyond traditional roles to explore identity and connection.\n\nAudiences are invited to navigate the space freely\, encountering individual expressions that clash and coexist. Sound artist Kent Lee shapes the soundscape in real-time\, responding to shifts in energy. Lighting designer Adrian Tan sculpts the atmosphere with light and shadow. Theatre practitioners Neo Haibin and Seren Chen layer text and voice\, adding resonance to the work’s themes.\n\nThis is more than a performance—it is the beginning of a journey—one that raises more questions than answers. re: intertwining asks: How do we co-exist\, create\, and shape one another in shared time and space? DESCRIPTION:parts of some body\nA body of work about its parts \n20 & 21 March 2025 @ Stamford Arts Centre Black Box \nDirected by Marzipan \nPerformed by Alton\, Din\, Jing Wen & Shruthi \nDuration: 1hr (inclusive of post show dialogue)\, no intermission \nRating: to be advised \n  \n“parts of some body” is a celebration of the physicality of the dancer through our body parts. We use the body in its entirety\, yet our mastery of it is tested through its isolated intricacies and articulation. The body is our tool\, our language and our temple. It is made up of body parts\, each with its own unique story\, performing a function on its own as well as in tandem with others to achieve more than the sum of its parts. This is the deconstruction of the human body – made up of multiple dancers\, in a surreal world where body parts float\, move on their own and tell of their struggles and triumphs. \n  \nIt is directed by ‘Marzipan’ aka Marcus Tan (IG: marzipansgd) who is more than just a dancer—he is a seeker\, a storyteller\, and a bridge between movement and meaning. Constantly developing his craft through the lens of a choreographer\, educator\, performer and community driver. Marzipan’s style of work often crosses between the boundaries of tradition\, heritage and innovation. He uses street dance language layered with contemporary thought and experimentation to create worlds of exploration. His work is performed by a versatile cast\, Jing Wen\, Alton\, Din & Shruthi who have rich backgrounds in street\, traditional and contemporary dance styles. \n

DESCRIPTION:This traditional Indian dance and theatre solo performance by Soumee De reimagines the origins of life through the lens of Mother Kali\, the goddess in Indian mythology who symbolizes transformation and governs time (known as kala in Sanskrit). It explores the journey from birth to death\, from earth to dust\, and from ignorance to wisdom. \nAccording to Kali-darshan (the philosophy of Kali)\, followers believe that life itself was conceived through the bodily functions of Mother Kali. The name Kali is derived from the feminine form of Kala (time)\, signifying the ever-changing nature of existence—where time births\, sustains\, and eventually dissolves all things. Kali embodies liberation (moksha)\, and her transformative energy dissolves injustice\, granting ultimate freedom.

SUMMARY:Urban Screens: Dancing Alone (Don’t Leave Me)
DESCRIPTION:A video art showcase by Susie Wong \n17 to 26 Jan 2025\nVenues: Digital billboard at Fortune Centre and Digital billboard at Wilkie Edge \nDancing Alone (Don’t Leave Me) is a series of onscreen vignettes of solitary women dancing by themselves\, for themselves. The work is inspired by a scene from the film\, The King and I\, where the female protagonist says\, “No woman would dance alone when a man is looking at her.” In Wong’s work\, the dancer is both the centre of attention and wholly indifferent; her occupation of the screen gives momentary respite and joy. \nYet her ability to escape the gaze of others is constrained by her own longing to be seen. Exaggerated by a highly visible medium\, these strange tensions speak of Wong’s long term preoccupation with romance and agency in relation to cinematic tropes\, and the complex negotiations that ensue. \nThis work is curated for Urban Screens\, which is presented by Objectifs as part of Singapore Art Week\, supported by the National Arts Council and Plan B Media. \nAbout Susie Wong \nSusie Wong is an artist\, curator\, educator and art writer in Singapore. She studied painting at the former LASALLE College of the Arts (St. Patrick’s Fine Arts) in the mid-1980s\, and pursued her Master of Fine Arts at LASALLE in 2007. She was artist-resident at NTU-CCA Singapore in 2018. Wong’s work ranges across landscapes\, still life\, portraiture\, a recurring subject in her early oil paintings and drawings. Since 1990s\, Wong has curated\, co-curated\, co-organised and/or participated in several solo and group exhibitions: Personae XX (1996\, Kandang Kerbau)\, HOPE: w.a.p. [women artists’ project] (2000\, Chijmes)\, The Machine Contemplating the Body (2014\, Singapore General Hospital) among others. More recently\, her work contemplates mass media and the circulation and consumption of images\, the mistrust of representation\, appropriating images or visual references for much of her work\, extending to romantic tropes in media. Her installation work with video/light projections includes Take Care of Me in the curated series\, Opening Day\, at the Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre in January 2018; and Dancing Alone\, at Objectifs\, 2020. \nShe was artist-in-residence at NTU CCA (Nanyang Technological University -Centre for Contemporary Art) from June to November 2018. \nWong has also written for numerous publications and monographs on art since the late 1980s. She is Assoc. Editor for ISSUE\, an annual LASALLE journal publication since 2013.

As part of her residency project\, she conducted walking workshops in Phnom Penh\, Bangkok and Berlin. This project idea draws on her ongoing research on our relationship with urbanity in rapidly developing cities. \nZen (visual art) and SueKi (dance) as collaborators\, are now interested in moving forward with research into Singapore’s urban context\, delving deeper into how they can explore the discourses on light and urbanity through multidisciplinary means: soundscapes\, multimedia data translation\, movement\, and tactile forms. This provides multiple entry points into the research as well as the interpretation\, creation\, and presentation of the data. Through artistic means\, they are interested in opening up a space where people can take time to process and discuss their embodied perspectives on light and darkness\, and how these ever co-existing elements are inextricably linked to life rhythms\, memories\, pollution\, urban development\, safety and surveillance\, environmental changes\, accessibility of energy\, and volatile global political states. \n— \nAbout Zen Teh\nZen Teh (b.1988\, Singapore) is an artist and educator interested in man’s relationship with the natural world. Her art practice spans photography\, sculpture and installation art. Teh has initiated collaborative interdisciplinary projects with artists\, art professionals and scientists to explore the impact of human activity on natural environments. Teh’s works have been showcased in Singapore and regionally including Thailand\, Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Korea\, Japan\, Taiwan and China. She was conferred the Young Artist Award by The National Arts Council\, Singapore in 2021. She was artist-in-residence at the International Studio Programme at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin\, Germany in 2024. \nAbout SueKi Yee\nSueKi Yee is a Malaysian dancer-choreographer (currently based in Berlin) who’s drawn to improvisation\, site-specific work\, and multidisciplinary experimentation and collaboration. With a Bachelor in Dance (ASWARA)\, she’s trained in contemporary dance\, ballet\, and various traditional folk and classical dances. Movement has become her entry point into understanding and exploring other art forms\, providing diverse entry points into her work and expanding the horizons of research\, creation\, and presentation.

Someone heard someone else say this somewhere before\, sometime back. But no one knows who\, when and where. It must have been God herself who had said this through some men. Only God could be that smart to tease men into such futility. And here\, men find themselves being baited into their own despair. \nConceptualised and directed by Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Ruby Jayaseelan\, Dancing with the Ghost of My Child is an experimental physical theatre performance written by Elvira Foo Jing  Yun\, Gregory Kong Ka-Ee\, Lex (Lee Zhi Qi)\, and Liu Qintong (Amelia) exploring vulnerability\, trauma and the desire to heal. The challenge\, however\, is to recognise both and for both to coexist. DWITA\, a Sanskrit term for duality\, delves into the balance between material wealth and spiritual knowledge\, invoking the blessings of goddesses Saraswati and Lakshmi. \nSAMVET\nIn SAMVET\, a captivating kathak showcase\, nature’s five elements unite to form a harmonious whole. This balanced convergence awakens our senses\, bringing a profound sense of perfect equilibrium. As these elements merge seamlessly\, they evoke an everlasting bliss that resonates through our heart\, mind\, body and soul. \nFLOWERS OF DEVOTION\nImmerse yourself in the divine beauty of Flowers of Devotion\, a captivating Manipuri dance performance that celebrates the sacred art form’s rich heritage. Rooted in the temple traditions of Manipur\, the performance intertwines the ancient devotional dances of Lai-Haraoba and Raas Lila. This classical dance form is imbued with the devotional themes of Madhura Raas\, portraying the love of Kirshna with goddess Radha and the cowherd damsels of Vrindavan. SUMMARY:Mahalaya
DESCRIPTION:‘Maha Alayam’ means great temple. According to the philosophy Sanatana Dharma\, the human body is considered a temple within which the ‘Jiva’ or soul resides. Within this body the five sheaths or Panchakosha is encapsulated. The Panchakosha is a philosophy in yoga that refers to the five layers of awareness through which all human experience is processed. This performance aims at exploring the corporeality of the Panchakoshas through the narrative of the ‘Kurukshetra war’\, a segment from the epic Mahabharatha. Also known as the Bhagavad Gita we will focus on Arjun Viṣhād Yoga and Sānkhya Yoga. Upon further investigation\, this ‘war’ is seen as a metaphor for man’s inner struggles to realise his/her nature. In having to find one’s true purpose\, self awareness is a first step. The philosophy of the Panchakoshas is a linear knowledge system that supports the practice of self awareness. The five sheaths will unravel through the context of these two chapters led by the archetypes Arjuna and Sri Krishna. The movement and poetry re- territorialize a 6th century tamil poetic work ‘Thirumanthiram’ which expounds on the theory for the nurturing and preservation of the body. Keeping Bharathanatyam as the base\, the choreography incorporates elements of physical theatre through the use of ‘Mei- Padam’\, an ancient form of body conditioning practiced by Tamil Warriors.

DESCRIPTION:Le Bal de Paris de Blanca Li Experience  \nAn immersive live show in virtual reality. \nWe invite you to the biggest ball in Paris\, an experience created by Blanca Li to make you discover in a spectacular way virtual reality through dance and music. \nFor an hour and a half\, Blanca Li offers a total show\, of which thirty five minutes take place in virtual reality in a fantastic\, poetic\, delicate and surprising universe. \nBoth spectator and actor\, the public is led to participate and dance during the experience\, interacting with real dancers. \nTo carry out a progressive transition from virtual to real world\, the spectator is then immersed in a real ball with real dancers. The party spirit and ballroom dancing will be continued throughout the entire duration of the show that gradually immerses the participative spectator in a virtual world. \nBuilt around three grand ball scenes\, this piece takes the spectator into the whirlwind of a great love story where the dancers play the main characters of the plot. Somewhere between burn out and brown out\, two women\, exposed to each other like a palindrome in a distorting mirror\, lose their direction and rekindle with their inner wild animals. \n  \nBelgian choreographer Karine Ponties\, leading Czech creative dancer Tereza Ondrová and theatre director Petra Tejnorová explore the boundaries of subtle humour\, irony and absurdity in this award-winning dance-theatre performance.
