SUMMARY:Urban Screens: Dancing Alone (Don’t Leave Me)
DESCRIPTION:A video art showcase by Susie Wong \n17 to 26 Jan 2025\nVenues: Digital billboard at Fortune Centre and Digital billboard at Wilkie Edge \nDancing Alone (Don’t Leave Me) is a series of onscreen vignettes of solitary women dancing by themselves\, for themselves. The work is inspired by a scene from the film\, The King and I\, where the female protagonist says\, “No woman would dance alone when a man is looking at her.” In Wong’s work\, the dancer is both the centre of attention and wholly indifferent; her occupation of the screen gives momentary respite and joy. \nYet her ability to escape the gaze of others is constrained by her own longing to be seen. Exaggerated by a highly visible medium\, these strange tensions speak of Wong’s long term preoccupation with romance and agency in relation to cinematic tropes\, and the complex negotiations that ensue. \nThis work is curated for Urban Screens\, which is presented by Objectifs as part of Singapore Art Week\, supported by the National Arts Council and Plan B Media. \nAbout Susie Wong \nSusie Wong is an artist\, curator\, educator and art writer in Singapore. She studied painting at the former LASALLE College of the Arts (St. Patrick’s Fine Arts) in the mid-1980s\, and pursued her Master of Fine Arts at LASALLE in 2007. She was artist-resident at NTU-CCA Singapore in 2018. Wong’s work ranges across landscapes\, still life\, portraiture\, a recurring subject in her early oil paintings and drawings. Since 1990s\, Wong has curated\, co-curated\, co-organised and/or participated in several solo and group exhibitions: Personae XX (1996\, Kandang Kerbau)\, HOPE: w.a.p. [women artists’ project] (2000\, Chijmes)\, The Machine Contemplating the Body (2014\, Singapore General Hospital) among others. More recently\, her work contemplates mass media and the circulation and consumption of images\, the mistrust of representation\, appropriating images or visual references for much of her work\, extending to romantic tropes in media. Her installation work with video/light projections includes Take Care of Me in the curated series\, Opening Day\, at the Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre in January 2018; and Dancing Alone\, at Objectifs\, 2020. \nShe was artist-in-residence at NTU CCA (Nanyang Technological University -Centre for Contemporary Art) from June to November 2018. \nWong has also written for numerous publications and monographs on art since the late 1980s. She is Assoc. Editor for ISSUE\, an annual LASALLE journal publication since 2013.

SUMMARY:Phenomenology of Light and Rhythms of the Earth
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Zen Teh and SueKi Yee \n14 Jan to 2 Mar 2025\nObjectifs Lower Galleries \nOpening: Tue 14 Jan 2025\, 7pm – 9pm\nThe opening reception will be accompanied by a performance by Sueki Yee at 7pm.\nFree admission \nRelated events\nParticipative Movement Workshop (Please register here)\nDate & Time: Sat 18 Jan 2025\, 3pm – 530pm\nWorkshop details\nSueKi’s performance: 3pm – 4pm\nSharing and movement activities: 4pm – 530pm\nLocation: Objectifs Lower Galleries\nFree admission \nPhenomenology of Light and Rhythms of the Earth is a project extended from Zen Teh’s residency project and exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin\, Germany. As part of her residency project\, she conducted walking workshops in Phnom Penh\, Bangkok and Berlin. This project idea draws on her ongoing research on our relationship with urbanity in rapidly developing cities. \nZen (visual art) and SueKi (dance) as collaborators\, are now interested in moving forward with research into Singapore’s urban context\, delving deeper into how they can explore the discourses on light and urbanity through multidisciplinary means: soundscapes\, multimedia data translation\, movement\, and tactile forms. This provides multiple entry points into the research as well as the interpretation\, creation\, and presentation of the data. Through artistic means\, they are interested in opening up a space where people can take time to process and discuss their embodied perspectives on light and darkness\, and how these ever co-existing elements are inextricably linked to life rhythms\, memories\, pollution\, urban development\, safety and surveillance\, environmental changes\, accessibility of energy\, and volatile global political states. \n— \nAbout Zen Teh\nZen Teh (b.1988\, Singapore) is an artist and educator interested in man’s relationship with the natural world. Her art practice spans photography\, sculpture and installation art. Teh has initiated collaborative interdisciplinary projects with artists\, art professionals and scientists to explore the impact of human activity on natural environments. Teh’s works have been showcased in Singapore and regionally including Thailand\, Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Korea\, Japan\, Taiwan and China. She was conferred the Young Artist Award by The National Arts Council\, Singapore in 2021. She was artist-in-residence at the International Studio Programme at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin\, Germany in 2024. \nAbout SueKi Yee\nSueKi Yee is a Malaysian dancer-choreographer (currently based in Berlin) who’s drawn to improvisation\, site-specific work\, and multidisciplinary experimentation and collaboration. With a Bachelor in Dance (ASWARA)\, she’s trained in contemporary dance\, ballet\, and various traditional folk and classical dances. Movement has become her entry point into understanding and exploring other art forms\, providing diverse entry points into her work and expanding the horizons of research\, creation\, and presentation.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2025: Dancing with the Ghost of My Child by Noor Effendy Ibrahim\, Ruby Jayaseelan & NAFA
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Features\nOpen captions in English for all shows \na unique approach\, rather bold and different \n—Natya Vichara on Purushi by Ruby Jayaseelan \nI know [Effendy’s work] will express a kind of pain and anger acceptable in the performance space\, a pain and anger that is often delegitimised or minimised or considered “inappropriate” elsewhere—and I cherish his work for that reason. \n—Corrie Tan\, Jom Media on ANAK by Very Shy Gurl by fendy \nI myself am an absolute abyss. \n—Antonin Artaud \nIn the beginning\, God created despair\, for men to find hope within. Someone heard someone else say this somewhere before\, sometime back. But no one knows who\, when and where. It must have been God herself who had said this through some men. Only God could be that smart to tease men into such futility. And here\, men find themselves being baited into their own despair. \nConceptualised and directed by Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Ruby Jayaseelan\, Dancing with the Ghost of My Child is an experimental physical theatre performance written by Elvira Foo Jing  Yun\, Gregory Kong Ka-Ee\, Lex (Lee Zhi Qi)\, and Liu Qintong (Amelia) exploring vulnerability\, trauma and the desire to heal. It is devised by students from the BA (Honours) in Performance Making programme at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. \nCo-presented with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (a founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore). \nThere will be a dialogue with the artists after each performance\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request for the dialogue on 10 January 2025. Please email your request to info@singaporefringe.com by 6 December 2024.\n \n

SUMMARY:GIGENIS - the generation of the Earth
DESCRIPTION:“I am excited and humbled to be back on stage and direct six extraordinary soloist artists from all generations. GIGENIS is a profound tribute to that reflection\, a reconciliation between the past and the present times\, a genuine celebration of our collective love for dance—boundless\, timeless\, as well as deeply rooted.”\n– Akram Khan \nAkram Khan\, a choreographer and dancer rooted in the tradition of his practice\, and a creative interpreter of stories that need to be experienced\, has revolutionised the world of dance. \nKhan returns to his roots\, traditions and past—to a time when we were more connected with nature\, Mother Earth and our mythology. GIGENIS evokes the memories of our civilisation. \nIn his latest work\, GIGENIS – the generation of the Earth\, Khan shares the stage with a distinguished ensemble of classical Indian dance artists\, including Kutiyattam artist Kapila Venu\, Odissi soloist\, Sirikalyani Adkoli\, Bharatanatyam soloists Mavin Khoo and Mythili Prakash\, and the Bharatanatyam duo Vijna Vasudevan and Renjith Babu. \nKhan invokes memories across time and place to celebrate these artists’ collective love of dance. Drawing from his deep-seated connection to ritual practices and his ability to weave narratives through movement\, GIGENIS – the generation of the Earth is a testament to the enduring resonance of tradition in a rapidly changing world.

SUMMARY:Indian Performing Arts Convention (IPAC) 2024
DESCRIPTION:A showcase of Indian performing arts in dance\, music and theatre\, to develop interest and appreciation of Indian arts and culture throughout the year. \n \nDWITA\nDWITA\, is a mesmerising bharatanatyam performance by Rama Vaidyanathan and her daughter Dakshina Vaidyanathan that explores the harmonious coexistence of dualities. A mother-daughter duo reminds us of a duality that exists in every aspect of our lives. They complement and empower each other\, with one symbolising the present and the other the future. \nThere are always two sides to a coin\, two perceptions and two paths to a goal. The challenge\, however\, is to recognise both and for both to coexist. DWITA\, a Sanskrit term for duality\, delves into the balance between material wealth and spiritual knowledge\, invoking the blessings of goddesses Saraswati and Lakshmi. \nSAMVET\nIn SAMVET\, a captivating kathak showcase\, nature’s five elements unite to form a harmonious whole. This balanced convergence awakens our senses\, bringing a profound sense of perfect equilibrium. As these elements merge seamlessly\, they evoke an everlasting bliss that resonates through our heart\, mind\, body and soul. \nFLOWERS OF DEVOTION\nImmerse yourself in the divine beauty of Flowers of Devotion\, a captivating Manipuri dance performance that celebrates the sacred art form’s rich heritage. Rooted in the temple traditions of Manipur\, the performance intertwines the ancient devotional dances of Lai-Haraoba and Raas Lila. This classical dance form is imbued with the devotional themes of Madhura Raas\, portraying the love of Kirshna with goddess Radha and the cowherd damsels of Vrindavan. The dance is characterised by soft body movements along with peaceful facial expressions known as Bhakti Rasa\, the emotion of devotion. \nTICKETS & PRICES\nStandard – $35\nConcession – $28

SUMMARY:KNOTTED - An intergenerational contemporary dance show
DESCRIPTION:‘Knotted’ delves deep into the beauty\, complexities\, and enduring struggles inherent in the institution of marriage\, examining how its impact resonates across generations. Through the movement lens and language of the artists\, witness the joyous moments of connection and intimacy\, juxtaposed with the poignant challenges and sacrifices that define the journey of marriage. \nAs with our previous editions of intergenerational works\, the short narratives are informed by personal stories from the 3 generations of performers\, to showcase the ever-evolving beliefs\, cultures and perspectives. \nThe stage will hold young performers from our decakids programme\, pre-professional performers from our decastudios platform\, and senior performers from our decasilver programme. This production experience will enable performers to come together and build cross generational friendships through their love for dance and performance.

SUMMARY:Dramaturgs &: In conversation with Choreographers
DESCRIPTION:DRAMATURGS & is a capsule series of roundtable conversations centering the work of and relationship between dramaturgs and their artistic collaborators. Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe second of this year’s series is DRAMATURGS & CHOREOGRAPHERS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. When and how do choreographers invite a dramaturg into the choreographic process? What tensions arise between the choreographer’s creative autonomy and the dramaturg’s perspectives and insights? How might a dramaturg help the choreographer sustain and nurture (or nourish?) their practice over the long term? \nJoin us to unpack these questions (and more) in a conversation facilitated by Dr Nidya Shanthini Manokara\, and hear from a panel of local and international dance-makers Dapheny Chen\, Ricky Sim and Guy Cools.

SUMMARY:Mahalaya
DESCRIPTION:‘Maha Alayam’ means great temple. According to the philosophy Sanatana Dharma\, the human body is considered a temple within which the ‘Jiva’ or soul resides. Within this body the five sheaths or Panchakosha is encapsulated. The Panchakosha is a philosophy in yoga that refers to the five layers of awareness through which all human experience is processed. This performance aims at exploring the corporeality of the Panchakoshas through the narrative of the ‘Kurukshetra war’\, a segment from the epic Mahabharatha. Also known as the Bhagavad Gita we will focus on Arjun Viṣhād Yoga and Sānkhya Yoga. Upon further investigation\, this ‘war’ is seen as a metaphor for man’s inner struggles to realise his/her nature. In having to find one’s true purpose\, self awareness is a first step. The philosophy of the Panchakoshas is a linear knowledge system that supports the practice of self awareness. The five sheaths will unravel through the context of these two chapters led by the archetypes Arjuna and Sri Krishna. The movement and poetry re- territorialize a 6th century tamil poetic work ‘Thirumanthiram’ which expounds on the theory for the nurturing and preservation of the body. Keeping Bharathanatyam as the base\, the choreography incorporates elements of physical theatre through the use of ‘Mei- Padam’\, an ancient form of body conditioning practiced by Tamil Warriors.

SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival presents SAME SAME by Dame de Pic/Cie Karine Ponties & Temporary Collective (Belgium & Czech Republic)
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility features: open captions in English for all shows \n  \nIn a world where reason is a nice façade\, the bursting in of non-sense makes us face our relationship with normalcy and allows us to open up to unexplored paths. Somewhere between burn out and brown out\, two women\, exposed to each other like a palindrome in a distorting mirror\, lose their direction and rekindle with their inner wild animals. \n  \nBelgian choreographer Karine Ponties\, leading Czech creative dancer Tereza Ondrová and theatre director Petra Tejnorová explore the boundaries of subtle humour\, irony and absurdity in this award-winning dance-theatre performance. Inspired by silent film actor Buster Keaton whose trademark physical comedy was heightened by his deadpan expressions\, SAME SAME moves us with their depth and sincerity despite the hilarity of the form. \n  \nSAME SAME was awarded Best Dancer of the Year and Special Mention by the Jury at the 2019 Czech Dance Platform. \n  \nPost-show dialogue on 20 January 2024\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request. SUMMARY:M1 Singapore Fringe Festival presents aMoratorium by J’Sun Howard
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility features: open captions in English for all shows \n  \n“… resists essentialist notions of Black masculinity by imagining a world where Black pain… is met with Black tenderness\, care\, and community.” \n—Frenzied H(e)avens: African American Post Exilic Realities \nin J’Sun Howard’s “aMoratorium” by Brianna Alexis Heath \n  \naMoratorium was initially commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago to respond to its retrospective of Charles Wilbert White\, a visual artist who powerfully interpreted African American history\, culture\, and lives over the course of his four-decade career. \n  \naMoratorium explores Black male identity\, visibility\, temporality\, and its absence\, and further examines death as it relates to the Black church and Black spiritual traditions. It is an intimate performance that expresses generous\, compassionate\,and loving play between Black and Brown men in our current socio-political climate. \n  \nChoreographer J’Sun Howard and his collaborators performers Dedrick “D. Banks” Gray and Timothy “Solomon” Bowser\, and DJ Jared Brown\, have created a frank and courageous dance-theatre performance. Standing at the intersection between art\, activism\, education\, and social engagement\, aMoratorium challenges racial supremacy\, police brutality\, global anti-Blackness\, homophobia\, and xenophobia. \n  \nPost-show dialogue on 18 January 2024\, with speech to text interpretation available upon request. SUMMARY:The 11th Hour
DESCRIPTION:‘The 11th Hour’ is a dark dance comedy that dives into the topic of death and ageless speculation of what comes after\, in a satirical manner. In the Chinese culture\, we accumulate good karma in this life\, preparing for a reincarnation that would send us towards a better life. In the Jewish faith\, there is no afterlife\, just an end. \nIn many ways\, this work is about endings and our inability to accept them. Instead\, we make up stories of good places\, bad places\, vampires\, ghouls\, ghosts and zombies to fictionalise the idea that\, after death we may still exist in some capacity. It’s a dark subject and one that bonds humanity and sometimes the only way to deal with the dark\, is with the light.\nThe thematic double bill will feature the works of Decadance Co’s Resident Choreographer\, Rachel Lum\, and world renowned British Choreographer\, Sam Coren\, together with an impressive ensemble of dancers.

SUMMARY:SOUL of Odyssey - Multi-sensory\, Multimedia\, Multi-genre
DESCRIPTION:KL Shakespeare Players and the Hiroshi Koike Bridge Project of Japan announce the staging of SOUL of Odyssey an international collaboration from 26 October to 29 October at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre (dpac).  \nThis multi-sensory work\, based on the Greek classic by Homer\, devises and reimagines the hero’s journey and his attempts to rise from the ashes of war\, chaos\, and battles with deities. It questions and explores how human beings react to forces perceived to be out of their control. Or as in the proverbial question: “What happens to ants when elephants fight?”  \nWhen asked what informs his productions with their constant shifts of sensory focus\, Hiroshi Koike\, the artistic director of the production\, says that he wants to “shock and inspire”\, especially the young\, to imagine possibilities.  \nSOUL of Odyssey weaves different performative practices\, traditions and elements–dialogue\, storytelling\, movement\, dance\, live videos\, live music\, songs\, and chants–wrapped together with the aesthetic vision to create an integrated work that harmonizes sensory perceptions. In short\, a multimedia\, multisensory experience that informs holistically without privileging the intellect. Actors will speak in Bahasa Melayu\, Chinese\, English and Japanese. \nThis production is suitable for all ages.

SUMMARY:Mali Bucha: Dance Offering by Kornkarn Rungsawang (Thailand)
DESCRIPTION:Cross material and virtual worlds with up-and-coming choreographer Kornkarn Rungsawang in this ritual-inspired performance that combines dance\, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Rum Kea Bon is an ancient ritual performed at shrines and temples in Thailand where dance is used as a tool for negotiation by humans towards higher beings in a bid to make wishes come true. The charming dancer\, hired as a messenger to access higher beings\, enhances the likelihood of one’s wish fulfilment. \nInspired by this ritual\, Kornkarn created Mali Bucha: Dance Offering\, a hybrid constellation of augmented reality\, virtual reality and dance. This immersive and participatory iteration of Rum Kea Bon crosses between physical and immaterial worlds\, with a digital shrine accessible through AR and VR throughout the duration of the performance. Audience members will be able to view\, make wishes and offer flowers to the digital shrine\, with VR headsets present on site for audiences. \nKornkarn thus acts as an interface between the material plane (the real-time audience) and the digital realm (the virtual shrine)\, communicating individual wishes and thanksgiving to higher beings through dance. Flowing as a current throughout Mali Bucha is a belief system that concerns itself with duality—economics and ecology\, image and sound\, old and new\, the mundane and the transcendent. \nThis performance marks the full-length premiere of Mali Bucha: Dance Offering\, after being workshopped at various leading platforms in Asia and Europe\, such as Dance Nucleus in Singapore\, Kinosaki International Arts Centre in Japan\, and Tanz Kongress in Germany. As a dancer\, Kornkarn has spent years performing with the renowned Pichet Klunchun and training in both classical and contemporary dance forms. Now as a dancemaker to watch\, she continues to bridge the traditional and contemporary\, reflecting modern cultural impulses of this generation. \nMali Bucha: Dance Offering is commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. \nThis production is presented as part of da:ns focus – Connect Asia Now (CAN)\, a weekend that spotlights contemporary dance works by Asian artists focusing on distinct voices and creative impulses from the region.

SUMMARY:Lapse by Melati Suryodarmo (Indonesia)
DESCRIPTION:Known for her bold\, durational solo performances\, acclaimed Indonesian visual and performance artist Melati Suryodarmo premieres Lapse\, a new dance creation performed by collaborators from Indonesia\, Taiwan and Singapore. \nFirst released as two short films\, this iteration marks the live performance premiere of Lapse. Here\, Suryodarmo dives into the metamorphic constellation of body and environment through evocative\, visceral imagery suspended in factual absurdity. With sound design and live music by Yuen Chee Wai from Singapore music collective The Observatory\, Suryodarmo orchestrates movement patterns that steer the group of performers to connect by failures while collectively attempting a new structure and alchemy of senses. \nDrawing inspiration from by-products of chaos and situations that represent a gradual decline in the efficiency\, stability\, and overall functioning of society\, Lapse signifies a transition from a state of order and coherence to one of disorder and confusion. Within this deep-rooted turbulence\, Suryodarmo points to the symptomatic nature of systemic breakdowns\, ethical decline and societal disillusionment of our time. While lapses in society begin to manifest through the decay of behaviour\, diminishing social cohesion\, ruptured institutions and the disintegration of moral frameworks\, the work investigates the unpredictable space between reality and a vision of collective commitment towards change. \nLapse by Melati Suryodarmo is commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. \nThis production is presented as part of da:ns focus – Connect Asia Now (CAN)\, a weekend that spotlights contemporary dance works by Asian artists focusing on distinct voices and creative impulses from the region.
