SUMMARY:A Listening Body
DESCRIPTION:A listening body is a dance-theatre experience based on January’s thoughts and questions in and around Odissi. Informed by a practice that spans 30 years\, and more recently empowered by a virtual mentorship with (Odissi exponent) Bijayini Satpathy\, January has deepened her relationship with Odissi by actively listening and responding to her body\, mind and environment. This work peels away the commodified and exoticised layers of Odissi to reveal a relationship that is personal\, vulnerable and respectful\, enabling agency for both audience and performer to be equal partners in the experience. \nJanuary Low\, born in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia started dancing with Classical Ballet\, followed by 25 years of Indian Classical dance training in Sutra Dance Theatre\, Malaysia\, focusing on Odissi. https://www.januarylow.com/ \nShow times: \n20 Jul 2023 08:00PM\n21 Jul 2023 08:00PM\n22 Jul 2023 03:00PM\n22 Jul 2023 08:00PM

SUMMARY:George Town Festival: pulu’em and Luna
DESCRIPTION:In an enduring music and dance performance\, pulu’em and Luna celebrate Taiwan’s indigenous artistry and vitality with masterful and evocative narratives inviting audiences on a journey of self and collective reflection. The performance starts with pulu’em by Sangpuy\, a musician from Taiwan’s Pinayumayan tribe\, who pays tribute to the cultural\, natural\, and spiritual heritage of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples with songs from his latest album ‘pulu’em’\, along with his biggest hits and other soulful native tunes. The show continues with Luna\, performed by the highly acclaimed Bulareyaung Dance Company (BDC). Their 2018 milestone production integrates contemporary dance with inspiration from the rituals and singing of the Bunun people\, also listed as a cultural heritage in Taiwan. Together\, pulu’em and Luna offer an otherworldly experience that transports audiences on an immersive journey of self-reflection in the beauty and calm of time\, nature\, and life. \nShow dates: 22 & 23 July 2023 \n  \nGeorge Town Festival 2023 is a project by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI)\, organised by TLM Event\, and endorsed by the Penang State Government and the Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE).
