SUMMARY:As One Thing Flows To Another
DESCRIPTION:The Private Museum is pleased to present As One Thing Flows To Another\, curated by guest curator Ng Hui Hsien. The exhibition reimagines culture\, heritage\, and tradition in contemporary contexts—connecting an expansive range of artistic forms through multidisciplinary collaborations. It explores the works of eight visual artists\, and features special collaborations with leading Singaporean music charity\, The TENG Company as well as Photographer and Author\, Dr Chua Yang\, daughter of Cultural Medallion recipient Chua Mia Tee. The exhibition celebrates the 20th anniversary of The TENG Company and the launch of the second book in the Women Inspiring Women series by Dr Chua Yang.  \nAs One Thing Flows To Another explores the eight graces within Chinese culture: music\, chess\, calligraphy\, painting\, poetry\, wine\, flowers\, and tea. Each of these elements carries a long history and profound philosophies in Chinese culture\, evoking images of leisure\, serenity\, and refinement. Historically\, they served as cultural capital\, conferring status on practitioners within the realm of the literati. During ancient China\, the term “six arts” developed to encapsulate some of these elements\, and later\, the term “four arts” emerged. In more recent times\, the umbrella term “eight graces” is used. \nSuch observations highlight the creative evolution of language and culture. Embracing the idea of change and departing from a historical understanding\, As One Thing Flows To Another reimagines the eight graces in our contemporary context\, drawing inspiration from their modern associations. In this exhibition\, artworks intertwine and diverge in their characteristics\, forming loose and free connections that weave together broad themes of nature\, everyday life\, and nationhood in contemporary times.  \nAs One Thing Flows To Another invites visitors to experience moments of inspiration\, humour\, and contemplation\, aiming to foster a renewed appreciation for the fluidity of cultural elements and the bending of conventions that shape our world.

SUMMARY:Strange Connections: Art and Architecture
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the museum’s first anniversary at the Osborne House\, The Private Museum warmly welcomes you to the opening reception of Strange Connections: Art and Architecture by Richard Hassell. Renowned as the founding director of WOHA Architects\, Richard Hassell played a pivotal role in shaping the museum’s new chapter within the historic building. \nIn May 2023\, The Private Museum officially received the keys to the Osborne House\, situated atop the hill at 11 Upper Wilkie Road. The century-old house has endured the passage of time\, its walls echoing stories. From its colonial-era beginnings as a residence to hosting a myriad of occupants from different historical periods\, and now a haven for the arts\, the house is a vessel that encapsulates countless narratives. \nThe exhibition explores the intricate relationship between art and architecture\, delving into the historical narratives of Osborne House dating back to the 1830s. As part of research for the museum’s reimagining\, Hassell discovered strange connections between the building’s history and his own. The showcase reflects his ongoing investigation into emergent phenomena through playful visual constructions\, encouraging contemplation of the interplay between the physical and the abstract\, and the historical and the contemporary. \nHassell’s explorations in art began in his childhood\, with his practice now spanning drawing\, painting\, and sculpture. His passion for the scientific\, philosophical\, and cultural elements of patterns\, systems\, and networks manifests in both his architecture and art. In particular\, his exploration of complex tiling\, made public in 2016\, has led to exhibitions in Singapore\, Taiwan\, Europe and the USA. \nStrange Connections invites visitors to an exhibition of art and architecture that delves into history\, science\, and the web of connections that link us all.

Performed by a cast of seven actors\, fifty puppets\, and video projections\, the work employs filmic techniques\, captivating puppetry\, and clever stagecraft to manipulate the audience’s perspective.\nSUARA / Oro Rua by Singapore music artist Safuan Johari and Māori Choreographer Eddie Elliot features original compositions\, choral singers\, and New Zealand dance artists to imagine a post-Anthropocene future.\nSingapore theatre-makers Haresh Sharma and Chong Tze Chien’s The Prose and the Passion is a play where fictional characters from English novelist E. M. Forster’s novels traverse space and time and interact with characters from Sharma’s imagination. \nFirst showcased at the 2019 Venice Biennale\, internationally-acclaimed award-winning experiential opera performance Sun & Sea by Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė\, Vaiva Grainytė\, Lina Lapelytė\, will make its Singapore debut at SIFA 2024. An ecological work at its very core\, the work takes the form of an imitation beach indoors where its lounging performers sing about mundane existence\, worry\, and boredom\, darkly remarking on the Earth’s decline.\nTransforming Stamford Arts Centre into a sandbox of works-in-process\, Tomorrow and tomorrow is an extraordinary opportunity to witness the diverse practices of local theatre groups on a single platform\, opening up vistas for future presentations while unearthing Singapore’s fertile ground for contemporary theatre-making.\nAs part of Little SIFA\, The Dancer’s Fair beckons audiences of all ages to Cathay Green\, where a larger-than-life ballerina and an old-style fair comprising seven fascinating machines await. Catch Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About A Terrible Monster\, where Mo Willems’ books are brought to life with hundreds of illustrated paper puppets\, book pages\, two-dimensional props\, furry monster puppets and songs.\nSIFA’s online presence continues with the light gleams an instant\, a 9-minute experimental short film helmed by film artist Natalie Soh in collaboration with Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music that responds to the museum’s collections of specimens\, exploring the recursive and decaying nature of memory and meaning-making.\n\nSIFA 2024 is commissioned by the National Arts Council and organised by the Arts House Limited.

SUMMARY:Tung Yue Nang: Life
DESCRIPTION:artcommune gallery is pleased to present Life by veteran artist Tung Yue Nang. Tung (b. 1959\, Singapore) has secured a reputation\, over the past decade\, as an accomplished draughtsman and ink painter with a recognisable landscape style that is stupendously rich in detail yet delicately poetic in its espousal of Chinese ink-and-brush aesthetic. However\, Photography\, as much as painting\, has been a constant in Tung’s life as an artist. In the period of 2000s\, the passion he reserved for photography even took precedence over painting and he devoted well over a decade to mostly travelling and developing a body of photographic work. \nLife is Tung Yue Nang’s first solo photography exhibition and focuses on an aspect of his work that is less well known and exposed to the public. This curated showcase of 60 photograph prints at artcommune gallery features locales and topics spanning 6 countries – China\, India\, Thailand\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, and Singapore. While these works constitute but a fraction of Tung’s dedicated engagement with the medium\, they bring to sharp focus some classically human themes that have always preoccupied him – beauty in the mundane\, family bonds\, the interior lives of ordinary people\, old-world values in a changing society\, childhood innocence\, the resilience of life\, and\nthe quest for spirituality.

SUMMARY:Where Art and ADHD Collide
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking ADHD and Guan Hin Tay\, Collide\, Chairman\, BBDO/ book writer “COLLIDE” presents  “Where Art and ADHD Collide” \n“Where Art and ADHD Collide” is not just an event; it’s a celebration of creativity\, diversity\, and inclusion. We aim to shed light on the often misunderstood world of ADHD or vulnerable groups (Budget 2024: MPs debated measures to uplift vulnerable groups of workers)\, showcasing the remarkable talents and resilience of individuals diagnosed with this condition. \nThe event will feature Singapore’s first-ever LIVE painting inspired by the book\, “Collide” by individuals with ADHD. A silent auction will accompany the painting\, allowing attendees to support Unlocking ADHD and the participating artists. \nOne of the key figures in this endeavor is Khaitama D. Sun\, Singapore’s only artist who draws with drumsticks at the sound of rhythm and words. He plans to draw two paintings in one go\, one with his left hand and the other with his right hand.

SUMMARY:PCC Charity Art Jamming with Jamie & Gale
DESCRIPTION:Parkway Cancer Centre commences 18th anniversary celebration with a meaningful charity art jamming session with Ms. Jaime Teo – Miss Universe Singapore 2001 and artist(e)\, and Ms. Gale Choong – PCC Cancer Survivor and artist\, where they will share their transformative and healing journey through art. \nSuitable for the whole family\, ticket is priced at S$15 per person. Art materials and light refreshments will be provided. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to Singapore Cancer Society. \n  \nVenue:     Visual Arts Centre\,10 Penang Rd\, #01-02\, Dhoby Ghaut Green\, Singapore 238469 (Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station Exit B) \nDate:        Saturday\, February 24\, 2024 \nTime:        2.00pm – 4.30pm \nTicket:      S$15 nett each. Available at Eventbrite official website. \n  \nArt can harness the healing energy within each of us. It helps with building motor skills and neural connections\, enhances communication through creativity and imagination\, boosts mood and self-esteem\, and most importantly connects with self\, people and community. \nWe all seek connection\, and it is this connection that underpins the meaning of art and healing. \nHealing\, as the word suggests\, is not a destination. It does not have a fixed timeline or pathway that is linear\, nor is it homogeneous. Healing is a journey that comprises different sights\, routes and experiences for different individuals. Just like how each visit to the art museum is a different experience for everyone. \n“As Parkway Cancer Centre turns 18\, we wish to start the year of celebration on a positive and charitable note\,” says Dr Khoo Kei Siong\, Deputy Medical Director and Senior Consultant\, Medical Oncology\, Parkway Cancer Centre. “Together\, we can achieve strength\, hope and vitality to live life to the fullest.” \nFor more information\, please visit Parkway Cancer Centre official website.

SUMMARY:Sound Plot: True/South\, A Collection of Audio Plays
DESCRIPTION:𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁: 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲/𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 is a collection of audio plays responding to the geographical area of Tanjong Pagar/Pasir Panjang where the Singapore Art Museum currently resides. With audio design by Artwave Studio\, the plays first premiered as part of Singapore Art Week\, each with an audio spot installation at the museum and now available online as well. \nThe three short audio plays (of which the latter 2 were selected through our Open Call) are: \nSea Song  \nAdvisory: Contains some coarse language \nLaurie and Scott settle into their new expatriate lives at Sentosa Cove only to discover that not all is as it seems. Beneath the ostentatious luxuries of modern Singapore lie the sea and the land seething in their grief; and as Laurie’s connection to them grows she discovers that this loss is collective and communal. \nPlaywright: Joel Tan\nDirector: Cherilyn Woo\nActors: Julie Wee\, Daniel Jenkins\, Ching Shu Yi\, Serene Chen\, Tysha Khan\, Irsyad Dawood\, Joel Tan \nGhazal of the Banana Tree’s Heart \n\n\nA solitary banana tree remains on the shore\, the sole survivor amongst its compatriots\, lost to the need for the space they occupied; a lone banana tree that is the last repository of the stories of those shores – of fishermen\, turtles and the sea itself. Alone it sings the same refrain – but who listens? \nPlaywright: Danial Matin\nDirector: Grace Kalaiselvi\nActors: Suhaili Safari & Shahid Nasheer \nFragments of a Singaporean Hainanese \nAt the opening of a new exhibition on the Hainanese community in Singapore\, memories are excavated through the stories of three Hainanese immigrants of different generations\, their connections to an island they left for another\, and the sea that connects them. \nPlaywright: Wang Liansheng\nDirector: Lim Shien Hian\nActors: Jalyn Han\, Hang Qian Chou\, Rino Junior John\, Mitchell Fang
