DESCRIPTION:ViaRT is excited to introduce a new challenge for its 5th year art competition under the title “1.5 Degrees Celsius: Create against Climate Change.” ViaRT invites primary and secondary students across Singapore to join our annual art competition in response to global warming and the urgent need to act\, as well as in support of the Recycle Right campaign by the National Environment Agency (NEA) to encourage the 3Rs (Reduce\, Reuse\, Recycle) culture. \nThis year’s competition aims to ignite a creative response to the global warming crisis\, emphasizing the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius limit set by the Paris Agreement. Students are encouraged to use upcycled materials to produce artworks or design items that not only showcase artistic skill but also function as potent messages for climate action. \nParticipants can create innovative solutions such as energy-saving devices\, sustainable fashion\, or artworks that vividly depict the impacts of exceeding the 1.5°C threshold or any other climate change related topic. The goal is to raise awareness and inspire action among peers and communities towards maintaining this critical limit for global temperature rise. \nThe submission period will begin on September 9th and conclude on November 15th\, 2024. Entries will be evaluated based on their creativity\, impact\, and ability to convey a compelling message about limiting global warming. \nThe competition will include three categories: PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay Singapore Best Sustainable Message Award (for the artwork that best communicates the urgency of adhering to the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit)\, The Most Creative Award (for the most creative piece of artwork)\, and The Most Artistic Award (for the most aesthetically pleasing artwork). \nWinners will receive attractive prizes\, including cash rewards or staycation package from PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay Singapore\, thanks to our sponsors. SUMMARY:Dog Portrait Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Venue\nObjectifs Workshop Space (Sat 19 Oct); Fort Canning Park (Sun 20 Oct) \nCourse Description\nThe photographs that we have of our pets are precious to us\, precisely because the time we spend with them is equally as valuable. If you’ve ever wondered how to get better at capturing your dog’s lovable energy on camera\, look no further! \nJoin us for this 2-day dog portrait photography workshop\, where you will be able to learn how to photograph your fur babies using photography techniques such as composition\, lighting\, and directing. \nThis workshop is designed for participant pairs\, with each pair to bring one dog to the workshop. It is crucial that participants are able to manage their dog well in the presence of other dogs. \nParticipants will only need to bring their dogs along for the second session on Sun 20 Oct\, as a model dog will be present during the first session for participants to photograph and focus on learning the photography techniques. \nWorkshop fee\n$220 (per pair) \nInstructor\nTRB & Co. \nCourse Overview\nThe first session will take place at Objectifs Centre\, and will focus on the following: \n• How to craft your own photographic inspiration board\n• Compositional tips\n• Lighting tips and tricks\n• On-site review/critique of images \nThe second session will meet at and dismiss from Fort Canning Park itself. The second session will focus on putting the photography techniques learnt to practice. Participants will have to bring their dogs along only for this session. Focusing on the historic urban environs of Penang\, the series is a culmination of three separate trips to Penang between 2022 – 2023\, during which the artist endured unpredictable weather conditions and worked energetically to paint the landscapes on-site.  \nTan believes that an artist has to feel emotionally connected with a landscape in order to paint it. Penang\, like Singapore\, was once part of the Straits Settlements under the British Colonial rule and its landscape and culture today continues to reflect a melting pot of multi-ethnic influences. Mediated by his memories of Singapore in its yesteryears\, Penang\, saved from the behemothic sword of urban redevelopment\, has become reminiscent of the Old Singapore and offers him a continued source of artistic inspiration. This new series of Penang landscapes are marvellously expressed through the artist’s mature brush and palette knife techniques.  \nSince the 1980s\, Tan has developed a highly personal and recognisable style of landscape painting which eschews photographic details\, favouring instead\, an emotional and expressive handling of brushwork and colour. His thoughtful renditions of various landscape scenes around Southeast Asia\, such as an alley next to a weathered shophouse\, a rustic village\, a bustling open-air market\, local provision stores\, and streetside hawkers are bold in colours yet suffused with a mesmerising nostalgia.

SUMMARY:Déjà vu: When the Sun Rises in the West
DESCRIPTION:The Private Museum Singapore is pleased to present Déjà vu: When the Sun Rises in the West\, an evocative exhibition featuring the works of renowned Thai artist Natee Utarit. In continuation of the first exhibition at Silpakorn University in 2022 commemorating the artist’s return to his alma mater\, this historic exhibition now journeys to Singapore\, bringing with it a new myriad of selections from local and regional private collections. \nInitiated in 2019\, the Déjà vu series proposes an alternative interpretation of history by reframing Western classical knowledge alongside Eastern and Buddhist concepts. This exhibition presents a hypothesis of a reimagined space and time\, encouraging the audience to consider scenarios of “what if”—how different historical events might have altered our socio-cultural present. The Déjà vdu series draws inspiration from the artist’s experience in Naples\, where a chance encounter with a marble sculpture at the Museo Archeologico sparked a profound connection. This moment of Déjà vu merged memories of Thailand’s Walking Buddha with the classical Western figure\, leading the artist to probe further into the intersections between Eastern and Western cultures. \nNatee Utarit’s exploration through the series is deeply personal\, yet it resonates with universal themes of memory\, identity\, and culture. Through a diverse array of mediums—including painting\, sculpture\, embroidery\, stained glass\, and woodcut—the works serve as a reminder that history is not linear\, but cyclical; that the past\, present\, and future are constantly intertwined in ways that shape our perceptions of the world. By challenging the boundaries of historical plausibility\, the exhibition offers viewers a space to consider the possibilities that emerge when traditional narratives are turned on their heads\, symbolically represented by the paradoxical notion of the sun rising in the west. \nDéjà vu: When the Sun Rises in the West is the final instalment of The Private Museum’s 2024 programming—offering a fitting closure to a year of diverse artistic and cultural exploration. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Richard Koh Fine Art.

They will learn how to expose and develop their own prints using cyanotype — a UV light-sensitive photo printing process which creates beautiful blue prints. DESCRIPTION:Asia’s premier pre-professional orchestra\, the Asian Youth Orchestra will be embarking on its 2024 Asian Concert Tour with a line-up of much-loved French composers\, Ravel\, Lalo and Debussy in Singapore on 14 August. \nInternationally celebrated cellist\, Alban Gerhardt will play Lalo’s Cello Concerto. He brings over 30 years of experience to the stage\, and is recognised as one of the most versatile cellists today. \nThe orchestra will be led by Principal conductor Joseph Bastian\, who inspired the AYO on major annual tours throughout Europe and Asia since 2022. \nSince its inaugural performances in 1990\, the award-winning orchestra has played over 400 concerts in Asia\, Europe\, the US and Australia\, to an audience of more than one million concertgoers. It made its Lucerne Festival debut in 2017\, is a recipient of Japan’s Praemium Imperiale and Nikkei Asia Prize\, and is counted “amongst the finest youth orchestra round the world.” (San Francisco Chronicle) \nAYO’s 100-plus orchestra members are selected annually through a strict audition process. They represent China Mainland\, Hong Kong\, Taiwan\, Indonesia\, Japan\, the Republic of Korea\, Macao\, Malaysia\, the Philippines\, Singapore\, Thailand and Vietnam. DESCRIPTION:The Private Museum is pleased to present As One Thing Flows To Another\, curated by guest curator Ng Hui Hsien. The exhibition reimagines culture\, heritage\, and tradition in contemporary contexts—connecting an expansive range of artistic forms through multidisciplinary collaborations. It explores the works of eight visual artists\, and features special collaborations with leading Singaporean music charity\, The TENG Company as well as Photographer and Author\, Dr Chua Yang\, daughter of Cultural Medallion recipient Chua Mia Tee. The exhibition celebrates the 20th anniversary of The TENG Company and the launch of the second book in the Women Inspiring Women series by Dr Chua Yang.  \nAs One Thing Flows To Another explores the eight graces within Chinese culture: music\, chess\, calligraphy\, painting\, poetry\, wine\, flowers\, and tea. Each of these elements carries a long history and profound philosophies in Chinese culture\, evoking images of leisure\, serenity\, and refinement. Historically\, they served as cultural capital\, conferring status on practitioners within the realm of the literati. During ancient China\, the term “six arts” developed to encapsulate some of these elements\, and later\, the term “four arts” emerged. In more recent times\, the umbrella term “eight graces” is used. \nSuch observations highlight the creative evolution of language and culture. Embracing the idea of change and departing from a historical understanding\, As One Thing Flows To Another reimagines the eight graces in our contemporary context\, drawing inspiration from their modern associations. In this exhibition\, artworks intertwine and diverge in their characteristics\, forming loose and free connections that weave together broad themes of nature\, everyday life\, and nationhood in contemporary times.  \nAs One Thing Flows To Another invites visitors to experience moments of inspiration\, humour\, and contemplation\, aiming to foster a renewed appreciation for the fluidity of cultural elements and the bending of conventions that shape our world.

From its colonial-era beginnings as a residence to hosting a myriad of occupants from different historical periods\, and now a haven for the arts\, the house is a vessel that encapsulates countless narratives. \nThe exhibition explores the intricate relationship between art and architecture\, delving into the historical narratives of Osborne House dating back to the 1830s. As part of research for the museum’s reimagining\, Hassell discovered strange connections between the building’s history and his own. The showcase reflects his ongoing investigation into emergent phenomena through playful visual constructions\, encouraging contemplation of the interplay between the physical and the abstract\, and the historical and the contemporary. \nHassell’s explorations in art began in his childhood\, with his practice now spanning drawing\, painting\, and sculpture. His passion for the scientific\, philosophical\, and cultural elements of patterns\, systems\, and networks manifests in both his architecture and art. In particular\, his exploration of complex tiling\, made public in 2016\, has led to exhibitions in Singapore\, Taiwan\, Europe and the USA. \nStrange Connections invites visitors to an exhibition of art and architecture that delves into history\, science\, and the web of connections that link us all.

SUMMARY:Tung Yue Nang: Life
DESCRIPTION:artcommune gallery is pleased to present Life  by veteran artist Tung Yue Nang. Tung (b. 1959\, Singapore) has secured a reputation\, over the past decade\, as an accomplished draughtsman and ink painter with a recognisable landscape style that is stupendously rich in detail yet delicately poetic in its espousal of Chinese ink-and-brush aesthetic. However\, Photography\, as much as painting\, has been a constant in Tung’s life as an artist. In the period of 2000s\, the passion he reserved for photography even took precedence over painting and he devoted well over a decade to mostly travelling and developing a body of photographic work. \nLife  is Tung Yue Nang’s first solo photography exhibition and focuses on an aspect of his work that is less well known and exposed to the public. This curated showcase of 60 photograph prints at artcommune gallery features locales and topics spanning 6 countries – China\, India\, Thailand\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, and Singapore. While these works constitute but a fraction of Tung’s dedicated engagement with the medium\, they bring to sharp focus some classically human themes that have always preoccupied him – beauty in the mundane\, family bonds\, the interior lives of ordinary people\, old-world values in a changing society\, childhood innocence\, the resilience of life\, and\nthe quest for spirituality.

We aim to shed light on the often misunderstood world of ADHD or vulnerable groups (Budget 2024: MPs debated measures to uplift vulnerable groups of workers)\, showcasing the remarkable talents and resilience of individuals diagnosed with this condition. \nThe event will feature Singapore’s first-ever LIVE painting inspired by the book\, “Collide” by individuals with ADHD. A silent auction will accompany the painting\, allowing attendees to support Unlocking ADHD and the participating artists. \nOne of the key figures in this endeavor is Khaitama D. Sun\, Singapore’s only artist who draws with drumsticks at the sound of rhythm and words. He plans to draw two paintings in one go\, one with his left hand and the other with his right hand.
