DESCRIPTION:The Private Museum is delighted to present Love Connects: My Life in Dance by  Goh Soo Khim\, a book launch accompanied by a special exhibition that offers a glimpse into her journey in dance\, her artistic influences\, and her enduring legacy in the cultural landscape in Singapore. \nCultural Medallion recipient Goh Soo Khim is a pioneering figure whose influence extends far beyond the stage. As co-founder of the Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT)\, now known as Singapore Ballet\, the doyenne has shaped the landscape of dance in Singapore\, nurturing generations of dancers. \nHer memoir\, as told by Phan Ming Yen\, traces a life in motion—chronicling the triumphs\, sacrifices\, and the devotion that have defined her life in dance and beyond. In dialogue with the book\, the exhibition explores vignettes of life-long relationships forged through art and poignant moments from her time with SDT. \nThe exhibition presents a series of photographs by Robin PE Chee and Tan Ngiap Heng\, long-time photographers who have documented SDT’s performances for decades—alongside an intimate selection of works from her private collection\, featuring renowned and established artists whose works resonate with her journey. Through the lens of photography and the visual arts\, it highlights the artistic collaborations\, shared influences\, and her enduring love for the arts. \nAt the heart of both the book and the exhibition is a singular theme—love. Love\, in its purest form\, is the driving force behind all that Goh Soo Khim has built: the communities she has nurtured\, the dancers she has inspired\, and the legacy she continues to shape.

This exhibition marks the second showcase of Richard Koh’s evolving journey as a collector and gallerist\, showcasing over 50 works from his personal collection. \n  \nBuilding upon the narrative of the first instalment in 2019—held at the museum’s former home at 51 Waterloo Street—the second instalment expands the scope of Koh’s deeply personal collection. The first showcase offered an intimate glimpse into Koh’s collection—emphasising monochromatic\, abstract\, and landscape works that reflected quiet introspection. Now\, Of Dreams and Contemplation: I am All but a Story continues to unfold a collection rich in personal meaning—presenting works that trace Koh’s decades-long interactions with art and the artists he admires. \n  \nCollected with a focus on memory and emotion\, Koh’s private collection spans Southeast Asia and beyond\, blending local\, regional\, and global perspectives. This exhibition deepens the dialogue between art and life\, revealing Koh’s ongoing exploration of what he calls a “visual diary”—works that evoke deeply personal moments and emotions. This new selection of works reflects an evolving journey that continues to resonate with new meanings in The Private Museum’s expansive space at the Osborne House. \n  \nAs both a collector and the founder of Richard Koh Fine Art\, Richard Koh has played a pivotal role in shaping and contributing towards the art ecology in Southeast Asia. DESCRIPTION:Pameran Poskad 2024\, the much-awaited exhibition\, is back this December holiday with more than 400 artists! \n  \nThe creative community in Singapore gathers across visual arts genres from contemporary art to illustration\, textile\, toys\, zines and more. Notable ‘first timer’ artists include Ming Wong and Jeremy Hiah\, with stalwarts Robert Zhao\, Ezzam Rahman\, Anthony Chua\, Ha Manh Thang\, Hong Sek Chern\, Lye Yau Fatt\, Sujak Rahman\, Sunar Sugiyou\, Tan Sock Fong\, Vasan Sitthiket and Victor Tan showing alongside 400 artists and creatives! Also featured in the exhibition are 45 Chinese ink drawings from Tasek ArtLab children\, painted in a workshop led by veteran Chinese ink painter Sunar Sugiyou. \nThis ninth edition of Pameran Poskad will be launched at ION Art\, ION Orchard on 2 December by Guest-of-Honour Ms Jane Ittogi\, Chair of Tasek Academy. The unique exhibition features about 3500 postcard-sized artworks on the wall and on tabletop by more than 400 artists\, hobbyists\, and creatives of all ages and backgrounds. Participants also hail from Malaysia\, Indonesia\, Taiwan\, India\, Japan and the United Kingdom. This is your opportunity to view Singapore’s most concentrated showcase of talent and creativity in an inclusive and vibrant community event. \nThe exhibition also hosts a curated feature Small Works\, comprising 36 artworks less than 50cm x 50cm in size by 18 leading Singapore and Southeast Asian artists. Each artwork costs SGD2500 and below\, to encourage young art lovers that good art is not necessarily expensive. Join us for this photo walk where you will learn more about the techniques of taking photographs using your camera’s in-built flash. DESCRIPTION:ViaRT is excited to introduce a new challenge for its 5th year art competition under the title “1.5 Degrees Celsius: Create against Climate Change.” ViaRT invites primary and secondary students across Singapore to join our annual art competition in response to global warming and the urgent need to act\, as well as in support of the Recycle Right campaign by the National Environment Agency (NEA) to encourage the 3Rs (Reduce\, Reuse\, Recycle) culture. \nThis year’s competition aims to ignite a creative response to the global warming crisis\, emphasizing the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius limit set by the Paris Agreement. Students are encouraged to use upcycled materials to produce artworks or design items that not only showcase artistic skill but also function as potent messages for climate action. \nParticipants can create innovative solutions such as energy-saving devices\, sustainable fashion\, or artworks that vividly depict the impacts of exceeding the 1.5°C threshold or any other climate change related topic. The goal is to raise awareness and inspire action among peers and communities towards maintaining this critical limit for global temperature rise. \nThe submission period will begin on September 9th and conclude on November 15th\, 2024. If you’ve ever wondered how to get better at capturing your dog’s lovable energy on camera\, look no further! \nJoin us for this 2-day dog portrait photography workshop\, where you will be able to learn how to photograph your fur babies using photography techniques such as composition\, lighting\, and directing. \nThis workshop is designed for participant pairs\, with each pair to bring one dog to the workshop. Focusing on the historic urban environs of Penang\, the series is a culmination of three separate trips to Penang between 2022 – 2023\, during which the artist endured unpredictable weather conditions and worked energetically to paint the landscapes on-site.  \nTan believes that an artist has to feel emotionally connected with a landscape in order to paint it. Penang\, like Singapore\, was once part of the Straits Settlements under the British Colonial rule and its landscape and culture today continues to reflect a melting pot of multi-ethnic influences. Mediated by his memories of Singapore in its yesteryears\, Penang\, saved from the behemothic sword of urban redevelopment\, has become reminiscent of the Old Singapore and offers him a continued source of artistic inspiration. This new series of Penang landscapes are marvellously expressed through the artist’s mature brush and palette knife techniques.  \nSince the 1980s\, Tan has developed a highly personal and recognisable style of landscape painting which eschews photographic details\, favouring instead\, an emotional and expressive handling of brushwork and colour. His thoughtful renditions of various landscape scenes around Southeast Asia\, such as an alley next to a weathered shophouse\, a rustic village\, a bustling open-air market\, local provision stores\, and streetside hawkers are bold in colours yet suffused with a mesmerising nostalgia.

DESCRIPTION:The Private Museum Singapore is pleased to present Déjà vu: When the Sun Rises in the West\, an evocative exhibition featuring the works of renowned Thai artist Natee Utarit. In continuation of the first exhibition at Silpakorn University in 2022 commemorating the artist’s return to his alma mater\, this historic exhibition now journeys to Singapore\, bringing with it a new myriad of selections from local and regional private collections. \nInitiated in 2019\, the Déjà vu series proposes an alternative interpretation of history by reframing Western classical knowledge alongside Eastern and Buddhist concepts. This exhibition presents a hypothesis of a reimagined space and time\, encouraging the audience to consider scenarios of “what if”—how different historical events might have altered our socio-cultural present. The Déjà vdu series draws inspiration from the artist’s experience in Naples\, where a chance encounter with a marble sculpture at the Museo Archeologico sparked a profound connection. This moment of Déjà vu merged memories of Thailand’s Walking Buddha with the classical Western figure\, leading the artist to probe further into the intersections between Eastern and Western cultures. \nNatee Utarit’s exploration through the series is deeply personal\, yet it resonates with universal themes of memory\, identity\, and culture. Through a diverse array of mediums—including painting\, sculpture\, embroidery\, stained glass\, and woodcut—the works serve as a reminder that history is not linear\, but cyclical; that the past\, present\, and future are constantly intertwined in ways that shape our perceptions of the world. By challenging the boundaries of historical plausibility\, the exhibition offers viewers a space to consider the possibilities that emerge when traditional narratives are turned on their heads\, symbolically represented by the paradoxical notion of the sun rising in the west. \nDéjà vu: When the Sun Rises in the West is the final instalment of The Private Museum’s 2024 programming—offering a fitting closure to a year of diverse artistic and cultural exploration. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Richard Koh Fine Art.

SUMMARY:Asian Youth Orchestra Concert Tour 2024 - Singapore
DESCRIPTION:Asia’s premier pre-professional orchestra\, the Asian Youth Orchestra will be embarking on its 2024 Asian Concert Tour with a line-up of much-loved French composers\, Ravel\, Lalo and Debussy in Singapore on 14 August. \nInternationally celebrated cellist\, Alban Gerhardt will play Lalo’s Cello Concerto. He brings over 30 years of experience to the stage\, and is recognised as one of the most versatile cellists today. \nThe orchestra will be led by Principal conductor Joseph Bastian\, who inspired the AYO on major annual tours throughout Europe and Asia since 2022. \nSince its inaugural performances in 1990\, the award-winning orchestra has played over 400 concerts in Asia\, Europe\, the US and Australia\, to an audience of more than one million concertgoers. It made its Lucerne Festival debut in 2017\, is a recipient of Japan’s Praemium Imperiale and Nikkei Asia Prize\, and is counted “amongst the finest youth orchestra round the world.” (San Francisco Chronicle) \nAYO’s 100-plus orchestra members are selected annually through a strict audition process. They represent China Mainland\, Hong Kong\, Taiwan\, Indonesia\, Japan\, the Republic of Korea\, Macao\, Malaysia\, the Philippines\, Singapore\, Thailand and Vietnam. Over the years\, a staggering 25\,000 musicians\, aged 17 to 27 have auditioned for its annual tours.
