SUMMARY:Benchmarks
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Civic District afresh this August 2023 onwards\, with Benchmarks\, a new public art trail commissioned by the Civic District Alliance (CDA). Designed by six Singapore-based artists\, Lua Boon Kai\, Joyce Beetuan Koh\, Immanuel Koh\, Yang Jie\, Jeffrey Tan and Jason Wee\, the public art initiative features a series of six unconventional artwork benches inspired by punctuation marks dotted around the arts and culture precinct. Each art bench draws from the rich heritage of the district\, inviting visitors to have meaningful exchanges with themselves\, other visitors\, or even the surroundings while appreciating the beauty of the Civic District and its colourful stories. These art benches for Benchmarks are located at key areas of the Civic District\, such as the Asian Civilisations Museum\, The Arts House\, The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and along the Singapore River. \nFollow #CVDBenchmarks on:\nWebsite: https://artshouselimited.sg/civic-district\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theartshouse\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theartshouse

SUMMARY:𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬
DESCRIPTION:MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum is delighted to announce the opening of its latest exhibition\, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬\, curated by Roger Nelson. This distinctive showcase\, running from 9 March to 15 July 2024\, features an international ensemble of artists who delve into the concept of adaptation in art\, transforming various inspirations into new creations. \nAll the artworks in 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬 can be considered “adaptations\,” meaning that they respond to stories that the artists have taken from elsewhere. For example\, some artworks are inspired by works of literature and cinema. Other artworks take their cue from historical paintings\, sculptures\, and designs by other artists. Some artworks are also inspired by writings by scholars and theorists. \nDespite this\, all the artworks in the exhibition transform the stories they respond to into something new. In this way\, while they can be considered “adaptations\,” they are not trying to be exact copies of other artworks or literary or cinematic sources. Instead\, they are deliberately “unfaithful” kinds of adaptation\, meaning that they use their artistic license to freely change the look and feel of the stories they are responding to. \nThe concept of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬 is inspired by two of the artists that are included in the exhibition. They are Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook (b. 1957\, Thailand) and Mieke Bal (b. 1946\, Netherlands). Both artists are world-famous and have exhibited at many prominent platforms internationally. Both artists are also prolific writers\, and their writings as well as ideas from their artworks have inspired the title and curator’s concept for the exhibition. \nThe exhibition also showcases newly commissioned artworks\, including an installation by Fyerool Darma featuring a recording of a séance with a deceased man\, a series of paintings by Ian Tee based on a Chinese mythological tale\, and an artwork by Thao Nguyen Phan\, which reconstructs furniture designed by Vietnamese artist Diem Phung Thi\, serving as seating for visitors to engage with the displayed works. This approach is inspired by the writings and artworks of Mieke Bal and Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook. Additional pieces include videos and films by internationally acclaimed artists like Mieke Bal\, CAMP\, and Chulayarnnon Siriphol\, as well as an early silent film from Spain showcasing extended sword-fighting scenes\, created in 1908 by Ricardo de Baños & Alberto Marro. \nOriginally exhibited at Nanyang Technological University’s ADM Gallery in Singapore\, this exhibition was made possible with the support of Jim Thompson and Quu Hotel.

SUMMARY:Nomadic
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition curated by Dr. Vennes Cheng for Jim Thompson Art Center\, Bangkok \nNomad refers to individuals who lack a fixed habitation and instead move from place to place. Appropriating the concept of nomadic existence\, this exhibition reimagines the fluidity of one’s identity and the multitude of homelands\, which are fundamental conditions of Asia. The notion and composition of Asia are intertwined with the histories of human displacement. Wars\, conflicts\, and disputes in the region have compelled people to leave their places of birth and resettle in other countries. Human displacement represents both the past and the ongoing circumstances in Asia. \nThe selected artworks by participating artists from Thailand\, Singapore\, Indonesia\, Japan\, Taiwan\, and Hong Kong form a constellation that investigates and highlights the histories of human displacement in Asia\, particularly in the eastern and southwestern regions. This exhibition also seeks to delineate the connections and relationships between various parts of the region and proposes a plural lens to discern the multiculturalism of Asia\, emphasising that community and identity are social articulations of differences. It ultimately aims to mediate discussions surrounding the current circumstances of Southeast Asia and Hong Kong and to render imaginary one another’s reference points in the region. \nList of artists: \nHikaru Fujii (Japan) \nJiandyin (Thailand) \nLaw Yuk Mui (Hong Kong) \nLin Yichi (Taiwan) \nSim Chi Yin (Singapore\, New York based) \nTsang Kin-Wah (Hong Kong) \nTsao Liang-pin (Taiwan) \nTintin Wulia (Indonesia\, Sweden based)

SUMMARY:Landscape of Emptiness
DESCRIPTION:Landscape of Emptiness\, a solo exhibition\, by Sanitas Pradittasnee \nCurated by Kritsada Duchsadeevanich \nWhen we are in the situation and time of absentmindedly staring at the possibility of “truth”\, we will see a thin smog of emptiness. The emptiness is not naked\, though. The origin of this emptiness stems from the condition of letting go\, liberating or disappearing from existence. The emptiness\, with its boundless horizons\, is an abstract\, endless time and infinite universe in a faraway distance. At the same time\, to perceive this condition\, we need to be aware of “what” exists. The boundary of emptiness\, thus\, plays a crucial role in unveiling this evanescence leading to the state of emptiness. \nLandscape of Emptiness by Sanitas Pradittasnee creates a condition through which the audience enters a state of emptiness\, taking them into specific situations of space and time to venture into the concept of seeking truth in the frontier or “perimeter” of abstraction. The cloud of existence takes the audience down the path of the truth of time\, where everything perishes\, leaving only emptiness. \n

SUMMARY:CALL FOR ARTISTS: ANIMA MUNDI 2024
DESCRIPTION:ITSLIQUID Group\, in collaboration with ACIT Venice – Italian-German Cultural Association\, is pleased to announce the open call for ANIMA MUNDI 2024\, an international exhibition of photography\, painting\, video art\, installation/sculpture\, and performance art\, that will be held in Venice\, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello and in other prestigious venues and historical buildings\, from April to June 2024\, during the 60th Venice Biennale of Art. \nThe last edition of ANIMA MUNDI took place in Venice in 2022\, presenting a great selection of more than 500 art works realized by 250 artists\, coming from 40 countries. The festival focuses on the concept of ANIMA MUNDI\, which according to several historical cultures\, religions and philosophical systems\, is an intrinsic connection between all living entities on the planet\, which relates to the world in a similar way as the human soul is connected to the human body. \nPlato expressed his thought about the ANIMA MUNDI in the Timaeus\, “this world is indeed a living being endowed with a soul and intelligence… a single visible living entity containing all other living entities\, which by their nature are all related”.

SUMMARY:Objectifs Documentary Award
DESCRIPTION:From 18 May to 16 Jun 2024\, Objectifs Centre presents 3 works by recipients of the Objectifs Documentary Award 2023. \nAn Elephant’s Eye\nFeaturing works by Choulay Mech (Cambodia)\nRecipient of the Objectifs Documentary Award 2023\, Open Category\nMentor and Curator: Roger Nelson \nChapel Gallery\, Objectifs \nOpening | 18 May 2024\, 12pm – 7pm\nArtist Talk with Choulay Mech and Roger Nelson | 18 May 2024\, 2.30pm – 3.30pm (Register here) \nIn this exhibition\, Choulay Mech invites us to consider an elephant’s place in the world\, and to imagine the world as it is experienced by elephants. The artist proposes a multi-species view of the entangled intersections between nature and history\, religion and violence\, humans and other animals. Her intuitive and poetic approach layers photography\, video\, and found objects\, and draws on long-term research. \nChoulay pays particular attention to the impact on elephants of ongoing environmental destruction in Cambodia\, the country’s recent history of war and widespread violence\, and the spiritual beliefs combining Buddhism with animism which shape the attitudes of many Cambodians. \n—\nSunshine \nFeaturing works by Lê Nguyên Phương (Vietnam)\nRecipient of the Objectifs Documentary Award\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Ng Swan Ti \nLower Gallery 2\, Objectifs \nOpening | 18 May 2024\, 12pm – 9pm\nArtist Talk with Lê Nguyên Phương and Dan Tran | 18 May 2024\, 4pm – 5pm (Register here) \nSunshine\, an inner-western suburb of Melbourne\, is home to a Vietnamese-Australian community that started to grow in the 1970s\, when a large number of refugees from the American War in Vietnam were settled in Australia. Today\, the suburb contains multiple facsimiles of Vietnam in its community practices and environment – references to and longing for a home country that many first-generation immigrants continue to hold close to their hearts. In documenting the suburb\, Phương Nguyên Lê addresses notions of diaspora\, national identity and longing. \n— \nMangaramoti Tano Ni Ompung (To Bless the Mother’s Land)\nFeaturing works by Kaleb Sitompul (Indonesia)\nRecipient of the Objectifs Documentary Award 2023\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Ng Swan Ti \nLower Gallery 1\, Objectifs \nOpening | 18 May 2024\, 12pm – 7pm\nArtist Talk with Kaleb Sitompul and Ng Swan Ti | 18 May 2024\, 1pm – 2pm (Register here) \nThe Opung Raja Nasomalomarhohos Pasaribu (Natinggir Forest Indigenous Community) is a Batak tribe that has resided in the highlands of Toba in North Sumatra\, Indonesia\, for over 300 years. They are one of the area’s oldest indigenous residents. The tribe has a deep spiritual and emotional connection to the land from years of living in and managing the forest\, with the frankincense tree occupying a special place in their folklore and beliefs. Aside for using the land for farming and gathering\, they harvest the fragrant resin of frankincense trees\, a practice that has been in place for generations. \nThe tribe’s ancestral lands have slowly been encroached upon by eucalyptus plantations established by a major company that pulps eucalyptus trees for industrial purposes. These plantations have turned a vibrant ecosystem into a monoculture; the frankincense trees that used to grow plentifully are disappearing and the land has been left bereft\, threatening the tribe’s traditional livelihoods and practices. \nAbout the Objectifs Documentary Award\nThe Objectifs Documentary Award champions Objectifs’ mission to broaden perspectives through image making\, by supporting original voices in visual storytelling in Singapore and the wider region. The Award enables photographers to work on new or existing projects\, encouraging them to tell stories about their native communities. It welcomes different creative approaches to non-fiction storytelling\, from conventional documentary photography to visual experiments. Projects may be presented in still images or use multimedia. \nSuccessful recipients will be given professional and financial support to work on their projects over a 6 month-long period. The final works are exhibited at Objectifs each year. \nOpen Call for Objectifs Documentary Award here.
