SUMMARY:Seeing the Sun through closes Eyes
DESCRIPTION:We warmly invite you to the opening of Dirk Eicken’s solo exhibition Seeing the Sun through closes Eyes on Friday\, January 26\, 2024 at Kang Contemporary Gallery. \nIn three series of works from the last 20 years of his career\, the artist questions the possibilities of painting in the face of its failure in a fascinating way. Instead of accepting the end of painting\, Eicken sees its death as a source of new vitality. \nPainting serves the artist as a means of critically analyzing visibility: through his double-stretched canvases and overpaintings\, he creates an invisible network of images whose complexity cannot be grasped by looking at the surface of the picture. \nEicken’s intensive engagement with American abstract art\, in particular with artists such as Roy Lichtenstein\, Andy Warhol\, Frank Stella and Donald Judd\, clearly shapes his own conceptual and stylistic approach. With his two-layered paintings\, Eicken ultimately disregards Stella and Judd’s maxim what you see is what you see. \nEicken’s works open up an invasive view that leads beyond the superficial layer of the picture into the depths of painting. Instead of a purely rational identification with the surface of the painting\, Eicken seeks a deeper understanding and an empathetic view into the interior of the painting. His paintings show the canvas not only as a surface\, but as part of a complex structure with its own history and a hidden life of its own.

SUMMARY:Constellation
DESCRIPTION:Constellation is an exhibition exploring the perspectives and practices of nine women artists and creators within the context and background of contemporary society. All works refer to and reflect consciousness\, attitude\, knowledge regarding identity and society\, culture and environment\, time and space. The artworks are created from different energies\, expertise\, unique perspectives\, backgrounds\, and artistic practices of the artists. \nCollecting and presenting the works created for various purposes by 9 artists in the Constellation exhibition depends on the principle that gives importance to seeing and thinking and sending/receiving messages with the visual language of each artwork. We can say each artwork is set on the same site and have a conversation between each other in the exhibition space. These works are unrelated in their meaning and origins\, but a new relation was born. This process creates readings that can be either neutral or specific meaning and may take viewers on a journey to other places whether near and far. \nPARTICIPATING ARTIST: \n\n BUG SPACE 1:\n\nChainapa Lepajarn / Titirat Skultantimayta / Ampannee Satoh / Punyisa Silparatsamee / Imhathai Suwattanasilp \n\n BUG SPACE 2:\n\nNamfon Udomlertlak / Keawalee Warutkomain \n\n SOUTHEAST ASIAN CERAMICS MUSEUM:\n\nChainapa Lepajarn / Likay Bindery

SUMMARY:𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬
DESCRIPTION:MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum is delighted to announce the opening of its latest exhibition\, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬\, curated by Roger Nelson. This distinctive showcase\, running from 9 March to 15 July 2024\, features an international ensemble of artists who delve into the concept of adaptation in art\, transforming various inspirations into new creations. \nAll the artworks in 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬 can be considered “adaptations\,” meaning that they respond to stories that the artists have taken from elsewhere. For example\, some artworks are inspired by works of literature and cinema. Other artworks take their cue from historical paintings\, sculptures\, and designs by other artists. Some artworks are also inspired by writings by scholars and theorists. \nDespite this\, all the artworks in the exhibition transform the stories they respond to into something new. In this way\, while they can be considered “adaptations\,” they are not trying to be exact copies of other artworks or literary or cinematic sources. Instead\, they are deliberately “unfaithful” kinds of adaptation\, meaning that they use their artistic license to freely change the look and feel of the stories they are responding to. \nThe concept of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬 is inspired by two of the artists that are included in the exhibition. They are Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook (b. 1957\, Thailand) and Mieke Bal (b. 1946\, Netherlands). Both artists are world-famous and have exhibited at many prominent platforms internationally. Both artists are also prolific writers\, and their writings as well as ideas from their artworks have inspired the title and curator’s concept for the exhibition. \nThe exhibition also showcases newly commissioned artworks\, including an installation by Fyerool Darma featuring a recording of a séance with a deceased man\, a series of paintings by Ian Tee based on a Chinese mythological tale\, and an artwork by Thao Nguyen Phan\, which reconstructs furniture designed by Vietnamese artist Diem Phung Thi\, serving as seating for visitors to engage with the displayed works. This approach is inspired by the writings and artworks of Mieke Bal and Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook. Additional pieces include videos and films by internationally acclaimed artists like Mieke Bal\, CAMP\, and Chulayarnnon Siriphol\, as well as an early silent film from Spain showcasing extended sword-fighting scenes\, created in 1908 by Ricardo de Baños & Alberto Marro. \nOriginally exhibited at Nanyang Technological University’s ADM Gallery in Singapore\, this exhibition was made possible with the support of Jim Thompson and Quu Hotel.

SUMMARY:CONTEMPORARY VENICE - 14TH EDITION
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR ARTISTS\nCONTEMPORARY VENICE – 14TH EDITION\nVenice | March 15 – 29\, 2024\nDeadline: February 29\, 2024 \nITSLIQUID Group\, in collaboration with ACIT Venice – Italian-German Cultural Association\, is pleased to announce the open call for the 14th edition of CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2024 that will take place in Venice at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello from March 15 to March 29\, 2024\, and in other prestigious venues and historical buildings. \nThe 14th edition of CONTEMPORARY VENICE analyzes the relationship between body and space\, and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban settings in contemporary times\, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES. \nMIXING IDENTITIES analyzes the hidden parts of our identities\, through an immersive experience inside the fascinating universe of the complex labyrinths of our consciousness. The human body is a changing system that connects us with other bodies and spaces to perceive the surrounding reality; a strong communication system with its language and infinite ways of expression. \nFUTURE LANDSCAPES are abstract\, infinite and conceptual\, associated with a sense of freedom and infinite extension. Primarily experienced with the mind\, spaces redefine their limits and borders\, transforming surfaces into an open flow of pure ideas. This section focuses on the concept of the borders and the structures between body\, mind and soul\, the human identity and the city\, the space and the ground.

SUMMARY:Allegory of the Cave (Part ll)
DESCRIPTION:Allegory of the Cave presents a series of paintings that traverse through different eras\, moving\, splitting off and changing in each dimension of the development of Thai modern art. What appears in this exhibition is a shaker of aesthetics that change like dimming light passing through the cave of time until they become a dominant art form of an era. The exhibition Part I featured paintings from different eras\, presented together in order to create significant dialogues that reveal fractures in the development of art through time. \nIn Allegory of the Cave (Part II) features the works of Thanawat Numcharoen\, Pichaya Khunnawat\, and Wanapol Saenkham that split out and expand like erupted lava\, revealing the changing aesthetics from one era to another. This exhibition is like the episode extension of the contemporary dialogues that centres on the departure from the dark cave towards the new light of an era filled with the changing tide of time. \nArtists – Thanawat Numcharoen\, Pichaya Khunnawat and Wanapol Saenkham \nCurated by Kritsada Duchsadeevanich \nThe opening reception is on Friday 16 February 2024 at 6 pm \nat the 2nd floor\, Phannarai Building\, Art Centre\, Silpakorn University (Wangthapra)

SUMMARY:Nomadic
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition curated by Dr. Vennes Cheng for Jim Thompson Art Center\, Bangkok \nNomad refers to individuals who lack a fixed habitation and instead move from place to place. Appropriating the concept of nomadic existence\, this exhibition reimagines the fluidity of one’s identity and the multitude of homelands\, which are fundamental conditions of Asia. The notion and composition of Asia are intertwined with the histories of human displacement. Wars\, conflicts\, and disputes in the region have compelled people to leave their places of birth and resettle in other countries. Human displacement represents both the past and the ongoing circumstances in Asia. \nThe selected artworks by participating artists from Thailand\, Singapore\, Indonesia\, Japan\, Taiwan\, and Hong Kong form a constellation that investigates and highlights the histories of human displacement in Asia\, particularly in the eastern and southwestern regions. This exhibition also seeks to delineate the connections and relationships between various parts of the region and proposes a plural lens to discern the multiculturalism of Asia\, emphasising that community and identity are social articulations of differences. It ultimately aims to mediate discussions surrounding the current circumstances of Southeast Asia and Hong Kong and to render imaginary one another’s reference points in the region. \nList of artists: \nHikaru Fujii (Japan) \nJiandyin (Thailand) \nLaw Yuk Mui (Hong Kong) \nLin Yichi (Taiwan) \nSim Chi Yin (Singapore\, New York based) \nTsang Kin-Wah (Hong Kong) \nTsao Liang-pin (Taiwan) \nTintin Wulia (Indonesia\, Sweden based)
