SUMMARY:Rattan Eco Sprawl: Manifesting the Forest by Zen Teh
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum (SAM) presents Rattan Eco Sprawl: Manifesting the Forest\, a newly commissioned artwork by Singaporean artist Zen Teh. This installation is part of Port/raits of Tanjong Pagar\, a public art trail by The Everyday Museum that brings artistic perspectives into everyday spaces in the Tanjong Pagar neighbourhood. It joins other works on the trail by five other artists Aki Hassan\, Divaagar\, Space Objekt\, Grace Tan and Isabella Teng. \nNestled in a tranquil\, lush corner of Spottiswoode Park\, Rattan Eco Sprawl is crafted primarily from rattan\, with forms inspired by natural elements such as mountains and mounds where insects dwell — the same formations that have also influenced sacred structures like Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Live plants encroach on the structure’s exterior\, while the interior of the work\, with its lowered ceilings and narrowed passageways resembles a space where the natural world can be contemplated and nurtured.  \nSet against the backdrop of Singapore’s rapidly changing urban landscape\, Rattan Eco Sprawl reflects on the entanglement of nature and urban development. Through collaborating with rattan and wood artisans\, an ecologist\, and study of the local environments\, Rattan Eco Sprawl highlights our fragile\, intertwined relationship with nature. \nIn conjunction with the launch of the work on 6 October 2024\, a special artist talk will take place on the same day at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. The programme features a short film screening on the making of the work and a talk by artist Zen Teh who will discuss her interdisciplinary approach. Also present are the key collaborators of the work — the rattan artisans from Cambodia. Participants will have a chance to learn from the artisans\, weaving techniques used to create the installation. SUMMARY:Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:11 October 2024 to 31 August 2025 \nDaily\, 10am–7pm | Fridays\, 10am–9pm \nPeranakan Museum \n$6 for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents; $18 for Foreigners \nFamily\, art\, and entrepreneurship converge in the story of three visionary Peranakan women from Indonesia – Nyonya Oeij Soen King\, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing\, and her granddaughter Jane Hendromartono. From the 1890s to 1980s\, they produced impressive batiks in the renowned batik centre of Pekalongan on Java’s north coast. \nFeaturing about 200 batik textiles and accompanying objects\, Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship examines the lives and careers of these Peranakan women through their works. With batik as a portrait of society\, the exhibition reveals the influence of the Oeij family women as they became batik masters in their own right\, as they ingeniously responded to the rapid political\, cultural and economic changes of their time to run a business that produced great art. Visitors are invited to draw links to the development and evolution of Indonesian batik through a Peranakan perspective\, and to participate in hands-on workshops\, performances and tours. The exhibition will also feature a contemporary art commission by Aiko Tezuka\, an artist specialised in producing art based on the unravelling of woven fabric.

DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of transcontinental artist Fernando Zóbel in Fernando Zóbel: Order is Essential\, National Gallery Singapore’s first-ever solo exhibition dedicated to the cosmopolitan artist\, patron\, collector\, and scholar.  \n  \nBorn in the Philippines to a prominent Spanish family\, discover the remarkable journey of his artistic practice spanning across the Philippines\, United States and Spain. Marvel at his iconic works including the Saeta series which features his signature method of using a syringe to control thin lines of paint. \n  \nThe exhibition features over 200 pieces — including paintings\, drawings\, prints\, photography and archival materials. SUMMARY:Taiwan Collateral Event of Biennale Architettura 2025 “NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity”
DESCRIPTION:The Taiwan Collateral Event of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia is organized by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA)\, and NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity\, a curatorial project by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU)\, will represent Taiwan at the Biennale held from May 10 to November 23\, 2025\, at Palazzo delle Prigioni in Venice\, Italy. A 1:1 assembly press conference took place at NCKU on 21 January\, revealing the content of the exhibition to the public for the first time. NTMoFA Director Kuang-Yi Chen (陳貺怡)\, jury members Chia-Chi Jason Wang (王嘉驥)\, Kwang-Tyng Wu (吳光庭)\, June-Hao Hou (侯君昊)\, Ming-Song Shyu (徐明松)\, Chi-Yi Chang (張基義)\, and Jr-Gang Chi (漆志剛)\, as well as NCKU Associate Vice President Ping-Sheng Wu (吳秉聲)\, curator Cheng-Luen Hsueh (薛丞倫)\, and co-curators Sung-Chang Leo Chiang (江松長) and Meng-Tsun Su (蘇孟宗)\, were all in attendance. \n  \nThe title of this year’s Biennale is “Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.” Curator Carlo Ratti uses the term “Intelligens\,” highlighting the last syllable\, “gens\,” which means “people” in Latin\, to discuss three types of intelligence—natural\, artificial\, and collective—and their role in architectural design amidst contemporary environmental and climate challenges. Inspired by the theme of the Biennale and Robert Smithson’s theory of ‘non-sites’\, “NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity” examines Taiwan’s ‘non’-beliefs on TSMC chips\, high-speed\, and the relentless pursuit of efficiency and control—forces that are reshaping the world’s operations in a geopolitically precarious\, globalized landscape. Taiwan offers a model of embodied intelligens in its architecture\, showcasing how life adapts and transforms to create a resilient\, self-sustaining island republic in our collectively uncertain and fragile future. \n  \nTaiwan’s historical role as a contact zone is not only a region of political instability or ecological vulnerability created between two massive tectonic plates\, but also the geographical\, ecological\, and cultural spaces deeply reflect a state of tension between openness and closure. It is also a contact zone between various diasporic inhabitants\, nations\, and corporations\, generating layered and juxtaposed practices and intelligens. Featuring projects by teams of researchers\, architects\, designers\, and a documentary director\, the exhibition presents Taiwan’s built environment as comprising localized assemblages of digitally connected\, democratically paradoxical contact zones. “Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity” positions these assembled worlds as a frontline in planetary resistance against authoritarian autocracy and as an adaptive response to climate change at the Venice Biennale. \n  \n  \nBinary Dialectics on Three Main Topics: Efficiency\, Technology\, Control \nTaiwan’s spatial governance and development strategy are heavily influenced by belief and [non]- belief. Taiwanese people can turn anything into a belief\, yet we can also believe in nothing at all. The belief built upon fictional realities has enabled our societies to organize and collaborate throughout historical evolution. Under Taiwan’s rapid technological and urban development\, TSMC chips symbolize the contemporary “beliefs” upheld by Taiwan’s collective dedication\, prompting deep reflection on the environmental\, water resource\, and energy costs embedded within these beliefs. \n  \nThe exhibition seeks to identify and construct a gray area within the binary dialectic of “belief” and “non-belief” unique to Taiwan\, uncovering various expressions of “Intelligens” and its impact on spatial governance. The exploration will focus on three aspects: \n  \n\nEfficiency: NON-Belief in High-Speed explores the global trend of pursuing efficiency and high-speed development. Using Taiwan High Speed Rail as the case study\, the exhibition proposes a reflection on the urban ecology within the metropolitan areas constructed by the high-speed railway and amidst Taiwan’s rural-urban gap.\nTechnology: NON-Belief in Chips explores the beliefs in the two polarized and contradictory mythologies of the ‘tech island’ and the ‘eco island’\, as well as the hidden costs of green energy under the shade of solar panels\, reflecting on research into climate justice and new energy-driven typologies.\nControl: NON-Belief in Sensory-Motor explores the various subtle relationships in our everyday lives\, reviewing the different kinds of ecological\, cultural\, and social conflicts within the extended context\, encompassing non-belief in hegemonic empires\, and flourishing through tactics of the in-between\, based on understanding the city as a human sensori-motor system.\n\n  \nRoaming in the “Lagoon – Island – Archipelago – Peninsula” Exhibition Space \nThe concept of ‘Island’ is adopted for the design of the exhibition space\, presenting the tensions between ‘Belief’ and ‘Non-Belief’ through the relationship between ‘lagoon – island – archipelago – peninsula\,’ and reexamining the complex relationship between technology\, environment\, and social space. “Island” installation is at the center supported by metal stands adopted from the traditional banquet table as piles on the uneven sunken flooring. \n  \nMultiple orthographic sectional slices illustrate a compressed cross-section of Taiwan’s precarious geological conditions\, with coastal conurbations nestled in the mountainous shadow of the west-tilting fault block. Taiwan lies along a north-south fault line between the Japanese and Philippine archipelagos. The high-speed rail (HSR) line\, became an embodied sensorimotor extension\, cutting through these strata as a spatial/ temporal measuring tool of island landscape. \n  \nDim light filtering through the paper slowly flows over the terrain\, which is encircled by the ‘Tech Island\,’ continuously flashing images of Taiwan’s landscapes on fragments of electronic paper collectively. The contrast between lightness and the heaviness of the ancient Venice Prison Palace underscores the impact of the semiconductor industry on Taiwan’s landscapes\, shifting of urban heat island and environmental justice\, water and energy distribution\, and the tension between technology and ecology. Accompanied by 17 research projects\, the installation aims to generate awareness and foster discourse on the architecture of the resilient and self-sustaining island. \n  \nThe Taiwan exhibition also showcases 12 research and operative models arranged in an encircling archipelago configuration around the rooms. The research reflects contemporary architectural challenges and ideas\, inviting visitors to engage with Taiwan’s transformation in a precarious world. Upon entering the exhibition space\, an exterior-facing window frames a view of a Renaissance church across the Grand Canal\, while positioned perpendicular to the interactive and spiritual installation at the other end of the hall\, a large installation composed of densely packed circuit boards replicates a common ‘Votive Lamp Wall’ found in local Taiwanese temples\, serving as a visual and spiritual spectacle that reflects Taiwan’s unique non-belief intelligens. \n  \nNON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity is curated by a team from the NCKU Department of Architecture\, led by curator and department chairman Cheng-Luen Hsueh\, with co-curators Ping-Sheng Wu\, Sung-Chang Leo Chiang\, and Meng-Tsun Su. The team includes consulting expert Professor Wei Tseng(曾瑋)\, and international advisory expert and joint researcher\, Professor Brian McGrath\, from Parsons School of Design in New York. Appropriated from Wikipedia’s defining terms and conditions related\nto the ever-changing nature of its online lists\, the title announces its intentions from the get-go. The\nexhibition reflects and extends canonical works in his oeuvre to invite fresh perspectives on their\nmeaning and relevance today.\nBringing together over 50 artworks and new commissions from the early 2000s to the present\, the\nexhibition examines Chong’s (post)conceptual strategies and gestures\, expressed through works that\nmove through and between image\, text\, performance and situations. Across nine thematic rooms\,\nvisitors will experience how Chong employs everyday\, commonplace objects and scenarios\, from name\ncards\, to books\, newspapers\, and photographs of public-accessible spaces\, to confront contemporary\ngeopolitics and the infrastructural ironies of our data-driven and networked society — all with a dose of\nChong’s characteristic sharp wit. SUMMARY:Han Mengyun: Jewels of Impermanence
DESCRIPTION:Singapore\, May 2025 — ShanghART Singapore is pleased to present Jewels of Impermanence\, London-based artist Han Mengyun’s first solo exhibition in the gallery’s Singapore space. The title is borrowed from a poem the artist penned amid the unsettling spring of 2020. The show gathers a selection of paintings and drawings made between 2020 and 2025\, providing a scintillating\, at times enigmatic\, glimpse into the artist’s pandemic-era turmoil and the spiritual composure she forged through an aesthetic meditation on impermanence. \nHan’s images stage an encounter between Dutch vanitas paintings and Buddhist depictions of skeletons and skulls. Whereas vanitas and memento mori traditions expose worldly vanity\, Buddhist “meditations on repulsiveness” confront impermanence as a precondition of enlightenment. Interweaving iconographies through a repertoire of skulls\, hourglasses\, and other emblems of transience\, Han constructs mandala-like configurations\, printed with woodblocks she has collected across Asia. The mandala serves as a phenomenological prism—an architectonic map through which both the macrocosm and the psyche can be apprehended. Such material and visual hybridity stages a tension between sensuous surface and metaphysical aspiration. Works such as Spaß und Tod\, with its skeletal hands poised in play\, recall the late-medieval danse macabre and Tibetan thangka of the citipati\, acknowledging death as a kinetic partner in the continuum of life and the catalyst of existential transformation. \nThe series marks the artist’s return to oil painting which she rejected for almost a decade in search of the alternative to ‘the Western’. “In the prospect of grim uncertainty”\, the artist says\, “I felt an urgent craving for the corporeal lusciousness of oil\, the exhilarating violence of the brush\, the humble endurance of canvas—capacities ink and rice paper cannot sustain. In this existential aporia\, I understood for the first time the Heideggerean Sein-zum-Tode\, being-toward-death—the unflinching awareness of finitude makes life infinitely possible.” \nJewels of Impermanence \nIn the silent altar of the mind\, the soul awakens to whisper words of truth. That’s the gift from disasters\, a garland of quietude. There is neither past nor future. The present is forever present. That is also my present. May the song of birds break the dawn. May fear manifest itself as mere illusion. The siege of clouds fails to capture the night-dwelling moon\, whose mission is to reveal the veracity of light and compassion. My mind becomes clear and still\, like a pond holding moonlight\, like a mirror polished in the river. The ancient Persians wear poetry like jewelry\, I take impermanence as treasury of light shedding on the vicissitudes of life. \n~ Han Mengyun

DESCRIPTION:Auntie Julie’s mum was her best friend. She’d tell us how\, growing up\, her fondest memories were of the two of them devouring dumplings during their Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. \nIt’s been over ten years since Auntie Julie’s mum passed. Before that\, she had been her caregiver for years and when her mum was gone\, the rhythm of Auntie Julie’s life went with her. \nThrough art therapy\, Auntie Julie’s life was turned around when she met a community of individuals who were navigating their own personal grief\, and found in them friends who lifted her\, and who she could help uplift. She began to reconnect with herself\, with others\, and with hope. She painted\, she laughed\, and years later on\, she still greets her newfound friends every morning in their WhatsApp group chat. \nThis SG60\, we tell the stories of strength and progress like Auntie Julie. She reminds us that growth doesn’t just happen in buildings or systems\, it happens in people—and we want more people like Auntie Julie to have that chance at hope. \nJoin us as we do our part to honour the stories that don’t always make the headlines\, but deserve to be told. \nLet’s paint more stories of hope — together.
