Unhomed Belongings: Lucy Liu and Shubigi Rao

January 12

Date: 12 Jan – 24 Feb 2019

Venue: National Museum of Singapore, Stamford Gallery

Hours: Mon – Sun, 10am – 7pm

Event synopsis:

The Ryan Foundation, a private non-profit arts organisation started by lawyer and art collector Ryan Su, is proud to kick off its 2019 programme with Unhomed Belongings — Singapore’s first major art exhibition featuring artist and award-winning Hollywood actress Lucy Liu (USA) and Jurors’ Choice Award recipient Shubigi Rao (Singapore). Co-presented by the National Museum of Singapore, the exhibition is free to the public and will run from 11 January to 24 February 2019 at the historic Stamford Gallery in the Museum. Liu will also make her first trip to Singapore to commemorate the exhibition opening.

Unhomed Belongings presents artworks by two creative minds, with striking overlaps in perspective and subject matter. The discourse unveiled similar themes as the artists slowly developed into “visual penfriends” through an exploration of their respective practices. Incidental or not, Liu and Rao share an interest in examining and dissecting cultures, histories, identities and relationships. Both are also drawn to the repurposing of found objects in their art, as these objets trouvés become the conduit where the artists express shared sensibilities through divergent voices, creating new narratives.
