“Becoming – An Exhibition By Vincent Chua”
An event every day that begins at 12:00am, repeating until October 28, 2019
Vincent Chua(b. 1959) has always been fascinated with art since his childhood days. Growing up with his artist brother (the late Mr. Chua Ek Kay (1947-2008)) was an eye opening into the beauty and intricacies of art.
Over the years, Vincent’s art expression is distinctive in that he uses Chinese Ink in a unique way. He combined Western realism with a Chinese savour. He uses Western Perspective theory and shading to create volume and depth of field in his artworks. He creates texture with his skilful manipulation of the Chinese brush and the different dilution of the ink. He often uses Chinese Ink in a painterly manner, contrasting against the line-works. These are distinctives that stand out obviously to viewers of his art pieces.
The artist’s painting concept in this piece of artwork is undoubtedly a western art academy type of realism. However, the execution of this work uses traditional Chinese art medium and the result is markedly different if the work was carried out using Western painting medium like oil paints on canvas or watercolour on paper. The Chinese ‘xuan’ paper has absorbency characteristic that is different from the Western canvases or watercolour painting papers. The attributes of Chinese ink and its ability to be used at different concentrations with the respective brush skill can create different effects, not only in terms of tonal value but also in the visual outcome resulting from the water content in the ink and the absorbency characteristic of the paper; a fundamental skill that all experience artists working with Chinese ink on traditional Chinese “xuan” paper would possessed.
Vincent participated regularly in the local scene such as the annual National Day and Teochew Art Exhibition organised by the Ngee Ann Cultural Centre. His works has also been exhibited in China, India, Korea and Malaysia.
