AS IT IS
April 15, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Four fabricators come together to explore the nature of art, the relationship between our craft and our manufacturing productions. This project is in collaboration with Darren Mok, Jacqueline Sim, Matthias Yong, Tay Ining & Fellow Design, alongside audiences, at Toa Payoh Industrial Park.
⭐ An industrial rhythm — Stop there as it is.
***AS IT IS*** is a continuation of our interest in the fields of performative installation and durational sculpture, community building and placemaking, Art in-situ and site-specific work that combines the languages of documentary, mark-making process, personal narrative, and bodily labour. At Baremetalco, a fabrication shop, our presentation proposes to bridge the impermanence of material and the process behind its labour.
Taking the familiarity of Ikea’s AS-IS sale section as a framework, the audience visits the exhibition to encounter artworks “as it is” — an aesthetic encounter that seems to capture the moment of the fabrication process. This show highlights the many leftovers from actual fabrication projects at a metalworking shop, refurbished, reframed, reactivated as artwork to suggest its meaning. Like an Ikea furniture that is done being a display at its showroom, it goes into this AS-IS section, hoping to gain a second life.
The show aims to deepen the understanding of both the visual arts and the fabrication industry. We envision the show to be explorative for both the maker and the viewer. Our fabricators will be sharing our tools with the visiting audiences for them to manipulate the artworks as well. It gives the audience a moment, or momentum to gain a personal sense of mobility with the artworks, followed by a distanced viewing of their own labour.
All artworks in this show are provided “AS IS,” without warranty of any kind or guarantee of merchantability. We doubt that they will ever be sold as objects so they are open to be destroyed.
